I tried ever made me feel better.

through fatigue and step into thevibrant, joy filled life he has for us.
Mama.

for grace, you are in the right place.

and empowering tools to renew yourhealth, body, soul, and spirit.

(01:48):
Are you ready for this?
Let's do it, mama.
Let's talk about something we alldesperately want more of, and yet can

never seem to get enough of (01:58):
sleep.
If you're laughing orcrying right now, same.
Because sleep in motherhoodis like that elusive dream.
You know you need it, you want it, andwhen it finally happens, someone wakes you
up asking for a cup of water at 2:00 AM.

(02:18):
I get it.
You're a tired mom.
I'm a tired mom.
But today we're going deeper than justget more sleep because honestly, if it
were that easy, we'd all be doing it.
This episode is not about guilt, but about grace and understanding,
because sleep isn't just a nice to haveluxury, even though it seems like that.

(02:44):
It's actually one of the most powerfulhealing tools God built into our design.
And when we see it that way, we can startmaking small shifts that bring big changes
to our energy, hormones, and our sanity.
Let's talk about why sleepmatters more than you think.
Sleep is not just about being tired.

(03:06):
It's not just about having enoughenergy to keep up with your kids,
or maybe not snapping at yourhusband for chewing too loud.
Sleep is when your body heals.
It's when your brain detoxes, your hormones reset, your liver
gets to work, your metabolismbalances and your gut repairs.

(03:27):
Mama, if you're doing all thethings, eating well, trying to
move your body, taking supplementsand still not seeing results, you
might need to look at your sleep.
Now, I don't need to tell youthat moms have a complicated
relationship with sleep.
Maybe you're still in the babyor toddler phase and sleep

(03:49):
is interrupted every night.
Maybe your body wakes you up at 3:00AM like clockwork for no good reason.
Maybe you stay up too late because it'sthe only quiet time you get all day.
Revenge, bedtime, procrastination, anyone.
Yeah, I'm with you, mama.
I've been there too.

(04:11):
Or, maybe even when your head finallyhits the pillow, your brain is like,
did I sign that field trip form?
What are we doing for dinner tomorrow?
Oh, no, I forgot tochange the laundry, again.
Sleep doesn't always come easy.
That doesn't mean we can't startcreating space for better rest.
And trust me, good sleepchanges everything.

(04:35):
If it's been a really long time, maybeeven years, since you've had really
good sleep, you might have forgottenhow good you could actually feel.
But let's talk about what's happeningin your body while you sleep.
When you finally fall asleep, your body gets to work.
Growth hormone kicks in to repairmuscles, tissues, and balance metabolism.

(04:59):
Your liver begins its detox cycle, especially between one and 3:00 AM.
Your brain flushes out toxinsthrough the glymphatic system.
Your gut lining repairs itselfand your microbiome resets too.
Your hormones are also doing theirthing like cortisol, melatonin,

(05:21):
thyroid, and even insulin getadjusted for the next day.
So yeah, it's a big deal.
And when you miss out on deepquality sleep, it throws everything

off (05:34):
your energy, your weight, cravings, patience, mood, and more.
Let's walk through how sleep, or the lackof it, affects those five key areas of
our health that we've been talking about.
First of all, your hormones.
Your hormones follow a circadian rhythm.
When you stay up too late, sleeptoo little or wake frequently,

(05:56):
it disrupts that rhythm.
Lack of sleep increases cortisol, your stress hormone, ghrelin your
hunger hormone, and it decreasesleptin your fullness hormone.

Translation (06:10):
you're hungrier, you crave junk, you store more fat, and you're
snapping at people for no reason.
Sound familiar?
Me too.
Next is your stress.
Sleep is when your nervous system resets.
Without it, your body staysin fight or flight mode.

(06:31):
You know that wired but tiredfeeling, or waking up already anxious
before your feet even hit the floor?
That's your nervous systemscreaming for support.
And yes, the 47 snack requestsbefore 10:00 AM don't help either.
Next is your liver and detox.
Your liver is a night owl and it doesits best detox work while you are asleep,

(06:57):
especially between one and 3:00 AM.
If you're waking up duringthose hours, your liver might
be waving a little white flag.
Sleep deprived equals detox deprived, equals toxin buildup, equals hormonal
chaos, fatigue, and inflammation.

(07:17):
Next is your gut health.
Your gut lining repairs itself at night.
And your microbiome, ithas its own rhythm too.
If your sleep is off, it disruptsdigestion, contributes to bloating,
and throws off neurotransmitterslike serotonin, which affect
your mood and mental clarity.
And last is your blood sugar and weight.

(07:39):
Sleep impacts insulinsensitivity in a big way.
One poor night of sleep can makeyou as insulin resistant as someone
who's pre-diabetic the next day.
That means higher blood sugar, morecravings, and more fat storage.
So if you've been wondering whyyou're eating better but not losing

(08:00):
weight, start with your sleep, mama.
So it's not a secret that asmoms, we struggle with our
sleep , but what can we actually do?
First, let's just name it, momsare chronically overstimulated.
We're bombarded with noise, messes, questions, expectations,

(08:20):
and mental tabs that never close.
Plus, add caffeine, sugar, blue light, and stress to the equation, and our
sleep doesn't even stand a chance.
So here's the good news.
You don't need a complete overhaul, but small shifts can start
resetting your body's rhythms.

(08:41):
Let's start with some simpletips to start sleeping better.
Number one is go to bed andwake up around the same time.
Even if your kids don't cooperate, youcan anchor your body's clock, and often
that means getting to bed at a set time.
Number two is cutoff screens atleast 30 to 60 minutes before bed.

(09:06):
Melatonin, which is a hormonethat promotes sleep in
your body, needs darkness.
Blue light tells your brain it's morning.
Number three is create a wind downroutine: stretch, read, journal,
pray, use a magnesium lotion, whatever helps your body slow down.

(09:31):
Number four is avoid sugar andheavy meals close to bedtime.
They'll mess with your blood sugar andmake your body work instead of rest.
Your body can't operate in digestionand detox at the same time.
So if you are eating right beforeyour body wants to detox, you're

(09:51):
gonna mess with that whole system.
Lastly, support your nervoussystem during the day.
Taking a short walk, doing some deepbreathing, finding a moment of silence,
even if you could just go outside andsit on the front porch for two minutes,
uninterrupted, take some deep breaths, breathe in the fresh air, get some

(10:14):
sunshine, and say a little prayer to God.
Those things add up and theyhelp your body shift into rest
mode more easily at night.
You have to remember, rest is a rhythm.
And when we are in stress mode all daylong, and then we want to lay down and
immediately shut it off and just enterrest mode, it doesn't happen because

(10:39):
our body hasn't been in that rhythm.
And so obviously we can'tchange our whole lives.
That's not gonna happen, especially not overnight.
But what we can do is we can startto incorporate little moments
of rest throughout our day.
Little moments of recapturing ourbreath, of recapturing, our rest

(11:03):
in small ways that calm our nervoussystem, so that we create these little
rhythms that ultimately help us.
So that when we go to sleep at night,we're laying down, our body recognizes,
oh, hey, this is our time to rest.
Also, setting a bedtime at nighthelps with this dramatically as well.

(11:26):
So find small ways to startimplementing these into your daily
life, and you'll find that youstart to sleep better as well.
I also wanna add in a quicknote for my newborn mamas.
Okay.
Now listen, if you are in the thickof newborn life right now, you might

(11:47):
be thinking, "okay, Jerusha, sleepsounds great and all, but I haven't
seen REM since the third trimester".
Because who knows that sleepless nightsstart long before you push that baby out?
I get it.
If you're waking up every few hoursto feed a baby, and maybe you've
got toddlers tearing through yourhouse during the day, this season

(12:09):
is not about perfect sleep routines.
You are in survival mode and that's okay.
But even in this exhausting season, thereare a few small things that you can do to
support your body and protect your energy.
First of all, you can lower yourstimulation where you can, having
some earbuds in with calmingmusic, noise dampening headphones.

(12:33):
I know you can't totally cut outthe noise, maybe you can help calm
it just a little bit, or having afew minutes in a dimly lit room.
Your nervous system needslittle pockets of peace.
So find that where you can.
It doesn't have to be perfect.
Also, nourish yourself consistently.

(12:54):
Eat simple real food with protein, healthyfat, and fiber so you can stabilize
your blood sugar and avoid crashing.
Also, avoid sugar and caffeine at night.
Remember, even if you're tired, those late night snacks might
sabotage what little rest you do get.
Also, if you're breastfeeding, youprobably already know this, but hydrate.

(13:18):
Seriously, dehydrationmakes everything worse.
Drink your water, get yourelectrolytes in, and it'll help give
you a little bursts of energy too.
Lastly, ask for help even in a smallway, a 10 minute breather, someone
to rock your baby, or an older childhelping with cleanup add up for

(13:38):
small wins that make a difference.
And grace, friend, so much grace.
Your sleep will return in time.
For now, take some of this other adviceand put it in your pocket for later.
Right now, just remember to take careof your body in the ways that you can,
and remember that your faithfulnessin the season is not unnoticed by

(14:01):
God as you love on and pour outyourself for this newborn baby.
Okay, let me leave you withthis final encouragement.
Mama, sleep isn't lazy.
It's holy.
It's a gift God gave us so that wecould function, flourish, and feel
like the women he created us to be.

(14:24):
If you've been trying to gethealthy but still feel exhausted,
this could be a missing link.
Also, if you've been trying tolose weight, but you are completely
ignoring your God-given need for goodsleep at night, you need to know,

mama (14:41):
you gotta put your focus back in this area to unlock areas of your
