(03:21):
I think we'll start with an emailquestion that has come in and this comes
from Brian and he says, weare looking at installing an outdoor kitchen along
the side of our house. Thekitchen will attach to our pool patio.

(03:44):
Okay, you know there's a lotof different companies you could call for doing
something like that. Uh. Givenwhere your home is, I would recommend
you give the folks over at Victor'sRemodeling and Construction a call. You can
reach them at eight three two twofour three ninety nine ninety seven uh,

(04:11):
and he can help you with allthe outdoor needs and stuff like that that
you need. Uh, you knowVictor's Reminding Construction. I refer them a
lot for James Hardy Siding, butthey are a complete remodeler and do the
outdoor kitchens and stuff like that.So eight three two two four three ninety
nine ninety seven. Again, ifyou have a home improvement question, feel

(04:36):
free to pick up the phone andgive me a call. Seven one three
two one two five eight seven fourAnd David, what'd you say? All
right? Well, we got TimFox on the line, and uh,
Tim with Texas Remodel Team, howare you doing today? Great? How

(04:58):
you doing, Jim Man? Iam doing wonderful. You know, this
is the time of year that alot of times contractors lead start slowing down.
We got a lot of people wegot to keep busy, and you
know you're no exception. And sowe're going to talk about some windows today
and some great deals that you're offeringto people. So what do you got

(05:21):
going on the window side? Well, for today for appointments that are called
in today, we're doing a twelvemonth same as cash through enter Bank.
I don't normally do offers like that, you know, we usually keep our

(05:42):
margins very tight. Try to offerthe best emotion we can for windows,
and most of our appointments come fromreferrals. But I thought this might be
a nice opportunity to put us intosome new referral. Groups of people get
some appointments through the radio, andthen of course we'll get we know,
we'll get referrals from those people. We'll make sure they're happy. So yeah,

(06:04):
twelve months same as cash, okay, And that is great because you
know a lot of times people needthe windows, they're not ready to pay
for them right then, and youknow, gives them a way to go
ahead and get the windows and payfor it later. Let's talk about your
windows and what you use for forwindows real quick. Sure, we use

(06:27):
a number of different brands. We'rea dealer for n T as well as
for us, and you know, most of the most of the time we're
using an NTY product, but wealso if somebody likes the Anderson product or
Pella, we certainly have that available. We're we're trying to tail the the
window offering to the customer's needs ratherthan ours, right, so we'll assess

(06:53):
to how talk with the customer findout you know what their ultimate goals are,
and then try to make sure wesit the products and the choices that
we can give them, you know, to those needs and those goals.
But we're not limited to one brand. You Know what I find a lot
of times with most window companies istheir guys can go put a window in

(07:19):
as long as everything is the wayit's supposed to be for them to put
the window in. If there's anybad wood or any customizing, it's got
to be done, anything that's gotto be fixed, it gets beyond there
their abilities. But because you're aremodeler, you guys can handle almost anything

(07:40):
that comes up. Yeah. Absolutely, I think it's a big advantage for
a customer to call us, especiallyif they want maybe the window openings aren't
exactly where they want them to be. They wanted to add a new one
on the side of the house orclosed in a window. We can handle
both of those scenarios. If theysay they want to put in a larger

(08:01):
patio door than they have, alot of times people like those, you
know, multiple panel doors, wecan put the beam in and the header
and bring it back, fix thebrick, you know, fix the interior
finishes, make it look like itwas always that way. So we you
know, we have all the tradesand they know how and the experience to

(08:22):
really put that together. Okay,So if somebody's wanting to take advantage of
the great finance and you have availabletoday, what's the number they should call.
Yeah, they can call the office. It's two eighty one seven four

(08:43):
and and just you know, giveus a call. We'll we'll give them
a call back. It'll probably beMonday at this point, but we'll call
back and get something on schedule. But if you call today, we will
definitely give you that stay is cashoffer for twelve months. Or they could

(09:03):
go to your website, Jim,fill out the forum and then that would
also qualify. We'll see it onMonday morning. We know it's made that
timeline. Yeah, they just needto make sure they get something to you
today about it. Yeah, yeah, we would want to get something today.
I'm going to do this. Youknow a handful of new jobs.
Like I say, put this insome new circles of friends. We know

(09:24):
we'll get the referrals from those,so it's worth it. Yep, Well,
Tim, I appreciate it, sir. I hope you have a wonderful
easter tomorrow. Yeah you too,Jim. Yeah, looking forward. Should
be a nice weekend. So yougot plans for Easter? I do.
We'll be down in Galveston with afamily, So yeah, joining everybody come

(09:48):
down to Galveston and we'll have agood family easter. He will be nice.
There you go, well, siragain, you have a wonderful Easter
and I will talk to you againlater. Sounds great. Thanks you take
care, Thank yoube take advantage ofthat. You know, you hear other

(10:09):
companies offering zero percent interest all thetime, but you know what, I've
never heard it through that particular bank. Uh. You know a lot of
times it's through like Synchrony or GreenSky places like that, and I use
those type of financing as well. But you know, Tim Fox and the

(10:31):
folks over there, they really willdo a great job on your replacement windows.
So call Texas Remodel Team. I'mgonna give you the number that I'll
normally give you, two eight onesix one two fifty nine ninety one.
That's two eight one six one twofifty nine ninety one, and take advantage
of the deal. Help them keepeverybody busy, and you get a great

(10:54):
deal. And you know people askme all the time, what when can
we get the best deals on stuff? Well, this is the time of
year that you get great deals. And here's why. First spring break interferes
and people are all tied up withspring break and so they don't make calls.
Then next is coming up tax time. Oh I got to get my

(11:18):
tax returns done, so people don'tmake the call. Then they're starting busy
planning summer vacations. So this littlestretch is typically the slowest time of year
for contractors, and it's when you'regonna get the best deals. If you
don't get a good deal at thistime of year, to be honest with
you, you're not gonna get agood deal because that's some type of industry

(11:39):
that is busy year round for somereason. Uh. And I'll give I'll
give you an example. Plumbing forinstance. You know, if you're plumbing
backs up and you got to havea plumber come out and snake the line,
you're not gonna get a great dealon that at this time of year.
But any other type of products, you know, where where it can

(12:00):
it's one of those things where it'snot an emergency, but it needs to
be done. This is the timeof year to call, so again,
call and take advantage of that dealfrom Texas Free Model Team two eight one
six one two fifty nine ninety one. We'll be right back. Seven one
three two one two five eight sevenfour. Hey. You know, if

(12:22):
you're having an HVAC problem, youknow what I'm talking about. The system
doesn't seem like it's cooling right,or temperatures aren't working right. Have you
done your spring checkup yet? Well, if not, call Due West air

Here's more his Home improvement with JimDunny. Hey, welcome back to
Texas Home Improvement seven three two onetwo five eight seven four And I'll see

(16:11):
what I can do to help youout here on Texas Home Improvement. Let's
see here Bj and Copperfield. Howcan I help you? Hey, Jim,
thanks for taking my call. Wewe just extended our fence a little
bit on both sides of the house, and the contractor wrapped the bottom of

(16:33):
the post with some kind of plasticallymaterial to prevent it from rotting. Supposedly
that that was the contractor's idea. Now what's happening is like so one side
is six feet wide with two panelgate and it never locks, never aligns.

(16:56):
Because what's happening in my observation andis those posts that's a ten foot
extension and because of the plastic wrappedin the bottom, the concrete is not
holding it tight, and with heathumidity, when it rains, it moves.

(17:18):
It sways forward, backward, left, right. So even though if
I align the gate somehow, todaytomorrow is going to change. And of
course the contractor decided not to fixthe problem anymore, so I have to
figure out how to do it.So I've been thinking to disconnect the pickets
and the crossbar across support and tryto lift it up straight up, or

(17:45):
break the concrete in the bottom andput new posts on and put it back
together. Is there anything else thatis more like a jelly or something that
can be filled into that gap betweenthe plastic and the post to stop it?
How many gaps are we talking about? It's like think about like a

(18:08):
plastic wrapped around the bottom of thepost and then put in the ground to
the surface of the ground. Sothe basically I'm we're looking at the roughly
one sixteenth of an inch on allfour sites. Okay, I can tell
you right now that that's not what'scausing your post to not latch and line

(18:30):
up properly. What's happening is thesoil itself. As we get rains and
it dries out and stuff the soilitself moves and it will move that whole
post, the concrete and all,and that's typically what creates all these problems

(18:52):
we have with these gates like that. Now, the deeper you go,
the less of this you're going tohave. And my guess is he probably
only went a couple of feet withthat post. I thought they wanted to
have your problem with maximum. Yeah, so that's not going to do it.

(19:15):
For if you're going to have agate like that hanging on that post,
you need to be down at leastthree four feet in order to make
it stable. Kay. So whatI would recommend you do is just unhooked

(19:37):
the gate from it, you know, get your pickets and everything off of
it, pull that post out ofthe ground, you know, because you'll
at least have part of the wholedoug that way finished digging that hole on
down into I would how big agate did you say that was? It's
two and a half feet to twopieces, so basically two and a half

(20:02):
feet wide panel is hanging on thatpost. Another one is on the other
side. Yeah. I would probablyjust go down four feet, okay,
And should I change to four bysix or just leave the four by four.

(20:22):
Now four by four should be justfine. Okay, okay, but
yeah, you know, the gateitself is small enough that it's not putting
a lot of torque on it.It's just simply that the soil as it
expands and contracts, is moving it. Now we get soil movement that's down
five, six, seven feet, but you know, going down four feet

(20:48):
will help minimize the amount of movementand how much tipping back and forth you
get. So I think you'll befine at that. And that's not to
say that it won't still need someadjusting periodically, but it'll it'll minimize it,
right basically, like I you knowthose the corner levels that you can
hold it with the hold it onthe post and you can see which way

(21:11):
it's still. Yeah, So Iuse that. I just kind of nailed
it, put a tape and thenput the small nails and looked at it.
And I can see that, Okay, one day swaying this side forward,
one day's swaying yep. You know, so it's moving. I can
clearly see in the level that it'smoving yep. Yeah, And it's all

(21:32):
in the soil. Got it allright? Thank you very much. You
bet you have a happy Easter.Thank you and again our number seven one
three, two one two five eightseven four. Let's talk about Revius shingles
by f Way. If you know, when it comes to your roof,

(21:52):
I tell you you need a shinglethat's going to hold up. Now.
I know we had some hailstorms acouple of weeks ago blow through here and
my particular house I got hit bylarge hail and I have the Reva shingles
by f Wave because I got tiredof replacing the roof on my home.
And when I say large, we'retalking stuff that was the size of your

(22:17):
fist hitting the roof. Well,I have that Class four Reva shingle by
f Wave, the toughest shingle Ithink on the market. And this shingle
not only passes the two inch hailtest, it passes the two inch steel
ball tests with no problem. Andit with stands wins of one hundred and
seventy miles an hour. So ifyou're looking for a shingle, it's gonna

(22:38):
take it all. You're looking forReva shingles by f Wave, go to
thchi pro dot com and click onthe link for more information. When Jim
Duntan says pull the trigger, you'redarn well better pull it. If you're
looking for new windows, now isthe time called Texas Remodel Team and Tim

(23:23):

when you hear zero percent interest,it's with payments. They don't say that
part, but it's with payments. This is zero percent, no interest,
no payments for twelve months. Youneed to take advantage of that. Got
a question seven one three two onetwo five eight seven four. That's seven

(23:45):
one three two one two five eightseven four. Let's see here, Charlie
and West University. How can Ihelp you? I'm actually calling for a
church friend who told me his UHelevator. As Conda went out and they
couldn't find anybody to fix it.And we've left church where I remembered remembered

(24:07):
you, but you probably would knowsomeone to remember your company? Does that?
I don't know, okay. Andwhat type of elevator is is a
regular commercial elevator? It's no,it's in his condo. It's a personal
elevator. Okay, it would bea personal elevator. That's that's all I
know. I haven't I haven't seenat seven yep. Okay, And that's

(24:30):
fine. I do have somebody thatyou can call, all right. His
name is Kelly Dennis, okay, and you can reach him at nine seven
to two eight nine eight five threeeight zero. Okay. That's mister Kelly

(24:57):
Dennis at nine seven two eight nineeight five three eight zero yep. Okay.
Appreciate it, and uh yeah, talk and talk with him and uh
he'll he'll be able to uh probablyyou know, whether he can he's got
somebody who can come look at itor not. Oh, but he'll probably

(25:18):
know somebody if he doesn't have hisown crew to because it's going to depend
on the brand and stuff, Okay, but he can. If he can't
do it himself, he can givegive a refoll Yeah, okay, okay,
appreciate it. Charlie. You takecare and have a happy Easter,

(25:41):
are you too, Thank you,Thank you, sir, bye and again
seven one three two one two fiveeight seven four. That's seven one three
two one two five eight seven four. And I'll see what I can do
to help you out here on TexasHome Improvement, your total home improvement source.

(26:04):
Let's see. So this comes fromMary in Friendswood. I heard on
one of your previously broadcast questions aboutattic insulation, and I'd like to know
who you recommend for my area. And do I have plywood down? No?

(26:29):
And I do have plywood down inthe attic. How will they remove
the old insulation vacuuming it out andthen putting in the new And it's my
understanding when I listen to your broadcastthat it will have a thick dust bunnies
all over the house. That's becausethe insulation is old and going through air

(26:51):
vents. If I'm remembering correctly,It's been quite a while since I listened
to that part of the program whenyou talked about it. Okay, let
me clarify something here. Basically, when you're getting all that dust going through
the house. A lot of timesit's because you have cellulose insulation in the
attic. Cellulose insulation will tend todegrade over time, starts turning to dust,

(27:17):
and it will shift sift through wherethe light fixtures are and things like
that. Also, if you haveany holes in your ducwork, as the
air is blowing through there, ittends to bring some of the dust with
it as well, so that's howyou end up getting the dust issue.
But cellulose insulation usually takes twenty twentyfive years and it'll start breaking down from

(27:44):
there forward, it's producing more dust. When you have new insulation put in,
you always have the choice of goingover what you have or having it
removed and putting in all new.If you've got fiberglass insulation, just go
over it because it doesn't degrade. If you have cellulose insulation, have it

(28:07):
vacuumed out and replaced so that youdon't have this dust accumulation just building in
the attic. As far as newinsulations that you can go in with,
there are several things that you canlook at, but typically if you go
in with a fiberglass bat type insulation, you don't have to worry about it

(28:30):
settling over time and having to beredone again later. You can go in
with the fiberglass blown in insulation, but over time it'll settle and you got
to add more insulation. So I'mtypically a fan of the bat type insulation.
There is another insulation out it's availablein the northern part of Texas by

(28:55):
a company called Milo Insulation. It'smy Legs that's made out of sorgum.
They extract the oil out of thesorgum and they take that oil and it
basically pops into what looks like apacking peanut and that can be blown in
the attic. There's no dust,it doesn't settle over time. It's really

(29:15):
a great way to insulate. Butit's not available yet in the Houston area.
It's in Austin, it's in Dallas, it's you know, in quite
a bit of Texas already, andit will be expanding, I'm sure into
Houston eventually. The reason that youdon't find it everywhere yet is they have

(29:36):
to set up a plant to makeit in these different locations. Otherwise they
got to transport these what looks likepacking peanuts across the country and it just
becomes cost prohibitive. So they typicallywhat they do is put in a factory
plant to manufacture it in the differentcities and go out from there. So

(29:59):
again with that and said, ifyou need to take care of this now
and you're in friends Wood, Iwould use a fiberglass installation. And again
if you've got the old cellulos inthere, have it vacuumed out. Most
of the installation companies are have theequipment to go ahead and vacuum it out
and take care of that for youas it goes. So with that,

(30:21):
we're going to take a quick break. We'll be back with more Texas Home
Improvement. Texas Remodel Teams Window Division. You know they got that great deal

(34:08):
by four pm two eight one threenine nine four o six two. We're
back to Jim Dutton and Texas isHome Improvement. Hey, welcome back to
Texas Home Improvement. Seven one threetwo one two five eight seven four Again
any home improvement question you have sevenone three two one two five eight seven

(34:35):
four. And BJ in Copperfield iscalling back in BJ. How can I
help you? Hey, Jim,you were talking about the installations, so
another question came into mind. Soat twenty eighteen, we after Harvey,
we had our route done and wethe victor is the one. He took
care of it, and they theyput ridgements all the way around. We

(35:00):
had two power power fans, sothey to suggested to take them off,
so we did that. So I'mnoticing that it's now the attic. I
store stuff in the attic room inone area, and it's just collecting so
much like a small pieces, likeright now the oak. We have lots

(35:21):
of trees, so we have allthe oak pollen seats. Those are all
coming inside the attic. So Iwas just thinking, is there anything that
can be done that can be pluggedin from underneath to or from outside to
stop the external you know, dustor debris from coming inside. He must

(35:46):
have put a ridge vent on.Yes, the ridge the ridge vent should
have a like a fiberglass almost likean air conditioner filter in it to minimize
that. And so I would verifythat that's in there. No, I

(36:07):
saw because I blow my roof toget rid of the the broot and the
gutter, so I know I'm positivethat there's nothing. So basic. I
can see the lines of the bridgevans, but there's nothing behind them it.
Basically it's big enough that a cockroachcan walk in easily. Like oh
yeah, so there's there is noother filter. So what I did,

(36:30):
like, I used the corner beadfor the sep rock with the perforations and
the holes in it. So Ijust cut those pieces and kind of tried
tried to patch it in look kindof a little bit to reduce the amount
of sure, Like I said, what what should have should be in the

(36:53):
ridge fans looks like a fiberglass typeair conditioning filmlter. And you can get
some of that material and tuck itin there, and that should eliminate this
problem. And it still stays verybreatheable that way. Yes, that's exactly
my concern. And I was lookingfor something that can fit right in.

(37:15):
And I have no problem. Ican buy and put it myself. It's
a one story home and I alwaysclaim I'm on the roof, so not
a problem. I can do it. So what is it called? Just
the the fiber mesh like in alike the air conditioner has in it the

(37:36):
air conditioning filters. Mm hmm, that's all you need. In fact,
those fit from outside or those fitfrom inside the atty. They actually fit
on into the slots of the ridgevent. It normally comes with it in

(37:57):
there. And I'm wondering if ifyours just didn't come with it, so
you actually could take someone and putthem up on the inside. Uh,
to minimize this if you want sois it hard to take the ridge vents?
Oh? No, you don't wantto take the ridge ventce off.
I'm saying you just tuck it upinto those openings because the opening should be

(38:21):
about three quarters of an inch orso high, and so it gives you
plenty of room to stick something likethat up in there. Okay, okay,
okay, okay. So there's there'snothing specifically that is that, But
you're saying the ac fiber material thatI can put it in to reduce it.

(38:45):
Yeah, I agree that there ismaterial. It's specific for it because
it should have come with it init already. And so what I would
tend to do is call up Victorand say, hey, Victor, I
don't think this is in here, and have him check it for you,
because if it's not, he canmaybe just take him off and have him

(39:05):
replaced with ones that have it.Okay, I think that might be a
lot more easier for me to doit. It's a whole lot easier,
yes, Okay, Now I don'twant to mess with the ridge event and
like I did my my idea, but that is that that wind blows it
away and so I have to goback and put it back on, but
that is not I think that whatyou were suggesting that if there's a fiber

(39:30):
type filter type material. I knowI'm positive because those were the when they
were put down the truck unloaded.I saw them with my own eyes and
they had nothing on inside. Yeah. Yeah, give Victor a call and
talk with him about it. Thengot it. Thank you very much.

(39:50):
I appreciate it. You're welcome. You take care right right and again our
number seven one two one two fiveeight seven four. That's seven one three
two one two five eight seven four. And I use ridge vence all the
time. I love ridge fence withcontinuous soft it fence because you know,

(40:12):
the hot air rises, it goesout through the ridge, pulls in new
air through the soffet. It's justthe easiest way to keep everything nice and
flowing the way it's supposed to.But hey, manufacturers do make mistakes,
and you know, maybe there's justnot a fiber in this one. But
uh, give Victor a call andhe'll be able to check that out for

(40:35):
you. With that again, ournumber seven one three two one two five

(44:37):
total home improvement source Jeff and SanLeon. How can I help you?
Uh? I want to thank youfor talking about USA Insallation. I used
it on a house I bought inAtlanto, Texas that had zero insulation on
the walls. I watched the guysinstall it. They had to drill two
inch wholesals in the wood because it'sa wood frame house, and they filled

(45:00):
it up. It looked like shavingcream going in the walls. Yep.
And the guy Garant, I hadto find him. He took a while
to find a representative up there. He was at a Flugerville because my house
is in Lanto. And I finallyfound the guy. Yet, great young
man. It worked perfect. Heswear, he said, I swear you'll
during the summer you'll know the difference. In the winter, you'll know the

(45:20):
difference. And I admit, onehundred percent agreement. Best thing I ever
spent the money on. It's notcheap, but it's very well worth the
expenditure. The next question I have. I just bought my second home built.
That's one hundred years old in land, or a bigger house for my
wife. And how do I know? And I hadn't had time to take
to a hardcore look at this placeexcept just to walk through. And I

(45:42):
bought it. But how do Iknow if there's studs in between the walls
like there was in this other housethat was built in nineteen twenty and this
one was built in twenty four.Do all old houses you think built in
times a craftsman style house the beast? Do they have to have wall studs
back then? Or did they evenuse them? Oh? Yeah, No,

(46:05):
it has wall studs guaranteed. Okay, that is the framework of the
home. Okay, I didn't AndJeff, I'm gonna have to let me
put you on hold, Jeff, because I want to address that a little
further with you. But I gotto take a quick break here. Hey,
let's talk real quick about American Standard. If you're thinking about a new

(49:12):
the number to call seven one threetwo one two five eight seven four Again,
any home improvement question you have, pick up the phone, give me
a call and let's talk about ithere on Texas Own Improvement. With that
being said, when we left,I was talking with Jeff and Jeff,
you're there still. Yeah. Ilistened to all the commercials and I agree
with I like American Standard. It'sone of my favorite air conditioners I ever

(49:35):
purchased. So I listened to allthat. I got caught up on news.
Some of it's kind of scary.Right now, at seventy years old
today, it scares me. Butback to the USA installation. Do they
have to do it? You're seventyyears old today. Yes, it's my
seventieth birthday. Yes, yes, well happy birthday. And I was guessing
you were somebody around thirty five toforty five years old by the way you

(49:59):
were talking. Well, you know, I guess I got a good voice.
I don't know. I'm not aweak seventy year old. I'm a
pretty strong seventy year old guy.But here's my question. So USA did
a great job on the other littlehouse, drilled up trench, whole,
saws in the wood. I hadit, they plugged it up, but
you know, those those plugs backin there, and then I had it

(50:19):
painted because it needed paint anyhow. So this house is a different style house,
and I assume that's the only Canthey only go in through the walls
or can they pump it in fromthe top down? That's my next question
without having drill holes in the wallof this house. If there's access to
the top, they could, butyou typically just don't have the access to

(50:42):
drill it. Okay, okay,I assume that, all right, So
we'll go over them there, andthen that's kind of I need to have
this house painted in. My wife'strying to figure out which style of paint
she wants for a house of thatage, and being a craftsman style to
keep the keep it looking good.So I'll do that again. Because this
guy's great Slugerville guide. Honestly, young man knew his business, and I

(51:04):
watched his technicians. I couldn't believe. It look like shaving cream going in
the walls and it sealed up.And I have hearty, you know,
I have a ship lap in allthe walls, and yeah, a little
bit of it kind of pulls you. But it dried up or it kind
of you know what. He Ididn't even need to air it out.
I don't go there that often andit sealed that house. That's all that

(51:25):
mattered. It did exactly what theysay it's gonna do. They guarantee it,
so I'll move on and get yeawhen done. My other question,
this house has a tin roof onit, okay, because it was that
way and it struck me. Sandwith floors, I'm fixing having them sanded
and resealed. That's not a problem. I get that done. Bathroom remodeled

(51:45):
that. I've got that working already. But ten roof. Is there anything
you can put underneath that to helpkeep the heat out? Or talk to
me, radiant barrier? Is that? Is that what you would suggest in
a ten room? Oh? Yeah, oh absolutely, you know the radiant

(52:08):
barrier works wonderfully for stopping the heat. Now do you have any insulation in
the attic? You know, I'mfixing to find that out. The other
home that I was talking about,it had a little dab. I had
another fourteen inches pumped in by thesame guy that did USA insulation. He
did this sprand whatever insulation, whateverit was, and it was great.

(52:30):
It helped a lot. Another guarantee, But I guess I haven't got up
in the attic I just did thishouse over last week, so I hadn't
had time to climb up in there. That'll be next. I'll look to
see if it has existing in thesame guy that did the USA insulation.
I'll make sure he brings the blowin insulation and just fill it up.

(52:50):
You know, was it twelve tofourteen inches? A standard fourteen to sixteen
is what we're looking for in thisarea. Okay, Okay, I think
that's what we went up to.I guess we added another fourteen on top
of the existing that it had.Probably, yeah, but so sick fourteen
to sixteen would be a good suggestion. And a radiant barrier, and I
haven't even looked at how that roofis built, you know, from the

(53:15):
inside. I just I wonder inradiant there's the thing with radiator, You
got a lot of choices with them. You could get a single ply that
goes on the roof rafters and that'llstop the heat from the tin you know,
from radiating into the roof because itacts as a heat barrier or the

(53:35):
energy Q radiant barrier can lay onthe floor of the attic on top of
the insulation, and that keeps anyheat that gets in the attic from going
into the insulation so it can doa better job for you. That's called
radiant Q energy Q yep energy Qokay okay, And you lay that on

(53:57):
top of the insulation after you havethe insulation stuf. Are you yes?
Does it smash it down when youdo that? Or is it just no?
It's it's just a it's it's likea sheet of aluminum foil, but
it's actually five layers thick, withthe middle layer being a thermal break.
So the two layers on the outsidearen't touching each other and so that just

(54:17):
stops the heat from transferring through it. Okay, good, that sounds like
a real problem solver for a housethat I was. I wouldn't want to
try to mount something up on thatten route because I don't know anything.
I mean, i'd be afraid somethingwould happen to it. So that sounds
good. And it's an energy barrieror what Yeah, energy Q energy radiant

(54:40):
barrier. Yeah, and their websiteis energy in the letter Q dot com.
Okay, Well that I appreciate that. I'll definitely take a hard look
at that. But anyhow, likeI said, this kid that was I
had the franchise for that. USAhad no idea how great that stuff would
be, and he guaranteed you'll seea difference or I'll be back out here

(55:01):
and now oh you will. Absolutely. It was the and cheap, but
it's very solid investment. But Jill, that's it. Man, I'm I'm
gonna leave you alone. You've gotother calls, but I certainly appreciate you.
I wish I could say I did, but you know I don't,
so no problem. Well, thanksfor your suggestion. Holiday weekend. You

(55:22):
know, yeah, I know.I got a honeybag, tam and fourteen
other things in the backseat of mycar. My wife's busy babysitting grandchildren already,
so I'm a happy Easter with fourgrandson you as thank you, have
a wonderful Easter with that. Iwill man always bless you. Thank you,

(55:42):
Bobby. You know I love thoseolder homes. I grew up in
a house that was built in nineteentwenty six, and the construction of them
is, you know, still twoby four studs, but when you metrum,
it is a two by four studand then it'll have like he said,
the ship lap on the outside, which is just on these old homes

(56:06):
like that, basically one by sixes. So, uh, there is no
insulation from back then really anything. They didn't start putting insulation in walls and
homes till the late sixties. Somepeople did, but most of them started
in the seventies. So you goback and you insulate the walls on those
old homes. It can make ahuge difference. And I should have cautioned

(56:30):
him on one thing, because alot of times then people want to start
trying to put insulation on the floorunder in the crawl space. Don't do
that. It'll hold moisture against thewood and can cause wood decay and mess
up the floors and stuff. Sojust just leave the floors alone. But

(56:50):
oh those old homes. I lovethose old homes. They're they're great to
work on. Anyways, if yougot a home proven question seven one three
two one two five eight seven four. And like I said, this is
a holiday weekend, so I've gotall open lines right now, ready to
take your calls and answer your question. Seven to one three two point two

How can I help you? Yes, sir, my house is three and
a half years old and they havehearty plank on the outside. And I'm
actually I'm sitting here on my deckand it looks like where they put the
nails in, it looks like easels. So I remember last week you had
mentioned that there was a kit thatyou could buy before I paint it,

(01:01:42):
because it's really not high enough whereI mean I can actually paint it myself.
But it's just the gross I mean, just like the measles. What
should I do to cover them upbefore I paint? And this is is
this a lap siding or four byeight sheets? Lap? And then yeah,

(01:02:02):
and then of course the roof islike sheets. Okay, you know
on a lap siding, the nailsreally aren't supposed to be showing except for
on the very uh top one.Well there's they're supposed to be hidden.
Now when when you do need tohave them showing, what they typically do

(01:02:27):
is just take a little bit ofcock and go over it and then paint
it all right, and that thatshould hide them. Okay, It's just
it's ugly, you know, Imean it looks treashy, yeah, I
mean the measles around. What happensis if you don't put if you don't
put the little bit of cock overthem, what happens is, uh,

(01:02:50):
the top of the nail will startrusting a little bit and just color and
it sticks out like a sore thumb. So it's like that white cock that
you buy, you know, likein the little Okay, yeah, any
type of silicon ice coalk, Okay, I can do that. Oh my
god, Happy Easter. And youknow what, I listened to you every
weekend. I love you, Thankyou so much. I really appreciate you.
Thank you, thank you, sir. All righty, take care,

(01:03:13):
sir gop bye again our number sevenone three two one two five eight seven
four Joe, Welcome to seven fortyktr H. How can I help you.
Yeah, sure, I have aquestion on your vapor barrier. And
my house is old and let's youit. He's eating me up. So a

(01:03:35):
few years ago I put blowing ininstallation and it had it helps some.
But how does that work? Isthat a blanket that you just spread out?
It comes? Yeah, you're talkingabout the Energy Q radium barrier and
it comes in a four foot wideroll and the role is basically a thousand

(01:03:58):
square feet and so you can cutit into like ten twelve foot long pieces
or longer even and just lay itup over the insulation like a blanket.
Oh that answers my question. Isit pricey? No, sir, No,
it's a typical payback on this investmentis in a few months. It's

(01:04:23):
well under a year. Okay, well okay, well I'm gonna get on
their website that's Energy Q. Isthat correct? Yeah? Energy? And
then the letter Q dot com. They're on the THCHI website as well.
Oh okay, all right, well, thank you very much, enjoy your
show. Thank you sir, youhave a happy Easter, you too,

(01:04:46):
Bye bye and again our number sevenone three two one two five eight seven
four Kevin, How may I helpyou, Jerry, This is Jim.
How can I help you? Iwanted to ask you about a product called

(01:05:12):

top of your kitchen countertops about fifteenyears ago. I had it put on
and I really liked it. Butnow it's kind of flake and all,
and I don't know of anybody thatdoes that. Have you ever heard of
it? I have it used tobe put on, I believe by Miracle

(01:05:33):
Method, and I don't know thatthey still Yeah, but I don't know
that they still do that. Thereis a product that is very similar,
but the unfortunate thing is that todo it yourself, and it's made by

(01:05:55):

Do you know a permit company thatcan help me with that? I
do not. I know there usedto be some out there. I don't,
and I'm assuming that there are stillpermit companies like that that go pull

(01:07:47):
the permits. But which are youjust you say you're moving them. Are
they built and you're gonna have themhas forwarded in? Is that what you're
looking for? Yeah, they're gonnamove. Uh. You know there's this
it's a mover that's going to movehim in and put him in place.
They're on pairing beams just for storage. Okay, the mover actually should know

(01:08:15):
either pull the permits for you orknow of a company who can do that.
Now the permit for go ahead,I'm sorry, and he doesn't have
it. Trance, Well, Iasked him about that. He said,
no, we don't do that.So what size are these buildings? Mhm,

(01:08:39):
they're two, they're twenty four aboutfifty six each. Yeah, he
ain't going to get away with transport, he knows in Houston without having a
permit, because he's gonna he's gonnabe required to have escorts and he's gonna
he's going to get a permit probably, but I've got to yeah, permit

(01:09:00):
to place them, you know.Sure, Uh yeah, talk with the
building department, the permit department, and they'll be able to tell you companies
who do that probably. Oh,okay, I'll do that. I'll just

We're back to Jim Dutton and Texas'sHome Improvement. Hey, welcome back

(01:10:57):
to Texas Home Improvement. Seven onethree two two five eight seven four.
That's seven one three, two onetwo five eight seven four. We're gonna
head straight into the calls again. And Susie in Sacramento, California, how
can I help you? Well,Hi, mister Dutton. I've been listening
for quite some time, and I'ma fan, and I test my knowledge

(01:11:19):
by how you're going to answer thepeople that call in. So thank you
for that. Thank you many.My question is about the the radiant heat
barriers that you're talking about with insulation. I have both in my house.
Uh it was built in twenty seventeen. I love having a whole house fan.

(01:11:44):
It gets so hot here in thesummers, and pull all the cool
in that we get every night, luckily in the summers is great, but
I don't like the dirt. Somy question to you is what do you
think about attics fans pulling the heatout? I mean, heat does build
up in the attic even with theradiant barrier and the insulations, but I

(01:12:06):
do not have even vents, sowe would have to cut those in,
I believe for an addict fan, unless it just pushes out through the top
of the existing roof. Yeah, you would have to have soft events in
order, and the air goes inthrough the soft fence and then out through

(01:12:27):
the exit on the roof. Sofor the attic fan, yes, ma'am.
Okay, huh okay, and thatin fact, let me let me,
let me make sure we're talking aboutthe same thing, because there are
attic fans that are used for movingair through the house as well. Is

(01:12:48):
that the one you're talking about. No, we call those out here whole
house fans. It's vent The looversare in a hallway and it pulls it
through the windows, through the houseout through the attic. But those pull
in dirt as well. And ifI was going to go that route,
then I would need to get sometype of allergy screen, something that's not

(01:13:12):
going to let the dirt come.True. Well, you don't. When
when we invented air conditioning, weupgraded and got rid of those fans.
I'm just messing with you. They'restill available. They're not used much here.
Oh well, we do have afan only on our air conditioner,
but those are worthless. Yeah, that's only good for circulating the air.

(01:13:36):
It doesn't do you know, muchof anything. But for cooling down the
attic at night, you'll a youcan use a solar fan up there,
or you can That's what I wasthinking. Yeah, those are amazing.
It sounds like they work very verywell. Uh, you can install one

(01:13:58):
that uses power. And I usedto tell people don't use them because they
were notorious for shorting out and causingfires. But the newer ones, it's
probably been a good five to tenyears since that's been an issue. The
newer ones are working much much better. Well, I would want the solar
because I'm sure you guys have heardthat we're getting raped out here by our

(01:14:19):
electric companies. Oh yeah, SoI'm trying to I'm trying to figure out
how to keep my house comfortable.I mean, I try to stay comfortable
at an interior house of seventy sixwhen it's you know, mid nineties one
hundred and five. But that's justnot really comfortable. So I'm looking for

(01:14:40):
options, yeah, to try.And I have I have thought about the
insulation in the walls, like theearlier caller was saying, but yeah,
for whether it's for electricity just blowing, yeah, in the walls. But
and here's the thing though with thatUSA insulation. You know your your walls
probably have a thirteen in them rightnow there. I don't know a lot

(01:15:04):
of things there. I don't thinkthere's installation on the interior walls. No.
Oh no, interior walls. No. And you don't want, you
don't need to put insulation on theinterior walls. It'll do nothing for you.
It's strictly exterior walls. Oh thatthat shaving cream type stuff he was
talking about. Any insulation. Yeah, I just if you do interior walls,

(01:15:29):
it's for sound deadening only. Itwill do nothing to help your energy
bills. Okay, Yeah, I'mjust looking to keep the house, get
the house cool. We are veryfortunate that we have evenings that drop thirty
degrees in the summer. So Iwant to pull that quil air in and
just want the most efficient way touse to do that. Sure, yeah,

(01:15:50):
but yeah, you put a solarfan up there. Just make sure
you put in plenty of soft advents. Here's the rule of thumb. For
every one hundred and fifty cubic orsquare feet of attic space, you need
one square foot of ventilation, andjust split it between the exit et the
entrance and the sofft is the entrance. Okay, one hundred and fifty square

(01:16:15):
feet is one square foot of ventilation, and split it between what, yep,
your exit and entrance of the air. So your entrance would be in
the soffit, your exit would bethe solar fan. And truthfully, and
the reason I'm specifying on the softthe solar fan because it's powered changes the
square footage. I mean, it'smoving CFM, so you really don't need

(01:16:40):
to worry about the square foot Butif your attic space, you know,
you say your house is just athousand square feet or fifteen hundred square feet,
you would need ten square foot ofventilation. So I'm going to need
thirty square feet because I'm at threethousand square feet one single story. Yes,

(01:17:04):
ma'am, well that's okay. Atone hundred and fifty you wouldn't need
that quite that much, okay, all right, yeah, I just I
was walking around looking for events tothink about that, and then I thought,
well, we can always cut themin. So truth well, you
you would need twenty square foot ona three thousand square foot house, So

(01:17:26):
that would mean you need ten squarefoot of ventilation on the soffet ben square
feet Okay, got it. Okay, they should you know, whoever installs
it should know that. But it'salways nice to have the facts behind it
to double check them. Yep.Okay. Well, mister Dutton, it's
a pleasure speaking with you, andI enjoy your show tremendously and Texas is

(01:17:51):
very lucky to have you. Well, how did you end up starting to
listen to me? Well, Ilisten to KTRH because I listened to a
lot of the investment shows and whenthey go back and you come on,
and I'm intrigued because I have abuilding background, and so, like I

(01:18:11):
said, I like to test myknowledge. I know a lot about I
know a little bit about a lotof things. Let's put it that way.
I understand. Well, Susie, you have a you have a very
happy Easter. You as well, mister Dutton. You enjoy your family and
thank you again. Yep, thankyou, ma'am. Take care yeah again

welcome back to Texas Home Improvements YourTotal Home Improvement source seven one three,
two one two five eight seven four. Let's head out to Conroe and
Russell. I appreciate you holding notcan I help you? Hey, y'all

(01:22:42):
were talking about that energy QUE.You've got a few calls. I'm not
at my house, but if Iget in my attic and I look at
the underdecking of the roof, it'sgot that silver assuming radiant barrier. But
I don't know if it's energy storeor Energy Q. Are you familiar with

(01:23:02):
that? That's all because we boughtthis house and it was built in two
thousand and nine and it had THETIC. Yeah. So the energy star is
just an energy efficiency rating and theEnergy Q is a type of radium barrier.
And I will tell you in myown home, I have the plywood

(01:23:25):
decking with the radium barrier on itas well, but I also put the
Energy Q on the attic floor becausewhat the what the decking does is it
helps minimize the amount of heat that'scoming into the attic, but you're still
going to get quite a bit ofheat. And then what I what the
Energy Q does is it blocks theheat that does get in the attic from

(01:23:48):
going down into my insulation. Andquite honestly, about twenty five to thirty
percent of my house has no insulation, and so that keeps, you know,
my energy bills from running out ofsight. It does work very well,
and it's a multi layer, soit can go behind sheet rock and

(01:24:09):
different things like that. And sowhat you do is get it as close
to the living space as you canto hold the temperatures out and in.
Because I have a vaulted ceiling inthe living room only all the three bedrooms
or flat ceilings, sometimes that livingroom can get pretty warm in summertime.

(01:24:31):
And we have about thirteen inches ofinsulation already in the attic, and I
mean, I think everything's fine there. I've got soffits all the way around,
just a single story house eighteen hundredand nineteen hundred square foot and there
was a ridge vent of course, but I did have the solar three of

(01:24:53):
them installed four or five years ago. The solar addict fans. It works
phenomenal, but still, I meanthere's some heat. So I'm just wondering
if I, oh, yeah, did this energy Q, would that be
like a better you know, especiallyon the vaulted ceiling area when you get
in the addict, because that's whereyou can't really stack the insulation up because

(01:25:15):
it's out and aim. Right then, I was going to say, can
you get to the vaulted ceiling youcould put it over that? Oh yeah,
yeah, uh it well at leastthree quarters of it. Yeah,
it would make it worse for you. Hell of a difference. Yeah,
okay, And then but right now, now in your opinion, let's say,
in the heat of summer, wekeep our house on I don't know,

(01:25:40):
seventy four, you know, somethinglike that, seventy five, and
we'll kind of kick it down toseventy two at night. You know we're
paying you know, well, wegot a sixteen and a half zerer Ac
system and we'll pay what two hundredand twenty dollars? Will you think that'll
help on that electric bill? Oryou know or am I will help some,

(01:26:02):
But it's it's probably not gonna knockit down a lot, because it's
not that high a bill to beginwith, right, So, but yes,
it'll it'll probably drop it. Oh, I wouldn't be surprised. It'd
probably drop it down to something inthe one eighty range. Well, anything
helps but I heard a little bitago you said, you know, within

(01:26:25):
you know, a year, wayless than a year. You know,
you get your return on here's here'sthe deal. You know, it comes
in thousand foot rolls, and sojust do it over the living room.
You can do what you want todo, right exactly. You're not stuck
with doing the whole house if youdon't want to. But it may make
such a difference you're gonna put iteverywhere else, all right, you get

(01:26:48):
it from them and just you cando it yourself type thing you don't have
or yes, sir, is itjust sold when they have to install it?
How's that wor no, this thisis a definite and do it yourself,
okay, okay. And that wasan energy q dot com with the
letter Q energy queue dot com correctand they let's see they And then one

(01:27:16):
other question I was going to haveis I have of the James Hardy siding,
of the Hardy plank all around thehouse except for the front it's stone.
But on the west side of thehouse, one bedroom always gets warmer
because of the sun coming through theyou know, the Hardy plank side or
the sidewalls. If you put thatenergy que blanket over that bedroom. Probably

(01:27:43):
not expect a difference because of thesidewalls. You know, the insulation that's
in there. You see people whatyou're getting from the attic heat wise,
but anything from the sidewall is notgoing to really do anything for but on
that sidewalk since you don't have accessyou know, to put the energy.
Q take a look at getting aproduct called cool coat and it's spelled ko

(01:28:10):
l co A T and you mixthat in the paint and it basically ceramic
beads that will reflect the heat andthat would help tremendously. Okay, makes
sense. All right, well, thank you very much, sir, Bet
you as well. Thank you.Ah. Let's talk about Ready Seals.

(01:28:31):
You know, far and away thebest product for staining any outdoor wood.
Whether it's a fence, a deck, a dock, it doesn't matter.
Ready Seal can do it. Itcomes in a lot of different colors.
But here's basically how it works. It soaks deep down into the wood fibers,
moisturizing the fibers, but it sealsit so the wood doesn't take on

(01:28:51):
moisture, and the moisture is whatkills wood. I mean, that's what
tears it up, It'll keep youroutdoor wood just looking gorgeous. I put
it on a fence that I justsold a property that I had it on
for sixteen years. Every four orfive years, I would recode it and
the fence still looked like new.You can do the same thing. Go
