(02:14):
Twenty four to seven. Well,if you got a home improvement question,
seven one three two one two fiveeight seven four is the number to call.
I was gone last weekend. Iwent down to Disney with the grandkids
they were that were on spring breakand my son, so we had a

(02:37):
great time. But while we weregone, it was both my wife's and
my dad's birthday, so I wasn'there to wish him a happy birthday.
So Dad, happy Birthday, alittle bit late, but nonetheless happy birthday.
And my wife was with me andDisney, so she got a happy
birthday wish already. So regardless ofthat, we're still here to take calls

(03:00):
and answer questions. So seven onethree, two one two, five,
eight seven four I am going tojump into some email questions that came and
the first one is from John aboutpatio surface the patio surface repair replacement.
Well, look, if you're dealingwith a patio, you've got a choice

(03:23):
that you can make. You cantake it out and replace it. Uh,
if the concrete is good and youyou know it's just a rough surface
or something, well you can havea coating put on top of it and
they can make it look like stoneor brick or whatever you want it to
look like. But if it's thesurface of the patio is blistering off,

(03:46):
and that's what's bothering you replace theconcrete because if you put a coating over
the top of that, it's it'sjust gonna blister off. The coating is
gonna blister off as the concrete blisters. But if all it is is you're
tired of looking at the concrete. It's the wrong elevation. Uh, you
know, maybe you did something thatscratched it up. I don't know.

(04:09):
I'm just throwing stuff out there. You know it's got too rough, a
broom finish on it for you somethinglike that, then you can code it.
But if the surface is deteriorating, then you don't want to code it
because whatever you put on it's justgoing to deteriorate as well. And as

(04:31):
far as somebody that you can call, call Due West, we have a
division that does the replacement of patiosand driveways, sidewalks, things like that,
as well as the your thane foryou know, injection underneath to pump
them up when need be. Sowe can definitely help you out with that.
So again, if you got aquestion seven one three two one two

(04:56):
five eight seven four, that's sevenone three two one two five eight seven
four, and I'll see what Ican do to help you out here on
Texas Home Improvement. So Nick andPearland sent in an email and he says,
Jim, I enjoyed the show.Listen when I can because two young

(05:18):
kids keep me moving. I getthat I had had three of my own.
You mentioned on the three sixteen showabout a device that emits either AM
frequency or uses ultrasonic technology to descale metal pipes. I heard the name

(05:38):
mentioned once but couldn't remember once thecall was over. You also mentioned that
you've installed one of these devices inone of your homes. Can you touch
on this again? Yes, Ican. First, it probably would help
with the scaling some But basically whatit is. The product is called flow

(06:00):
Tech, and what it does isit hooks up to a metal pipe.
If you've got oh PEX plumbing forinstance, we're PV plumbing. When you
get near the water heater places likethat, there's still going to be metal
ends that this would hook to,and it sends an AM signal through the
water which keeps the hard water moleculesbasically from bonding with each other and so

(06:30):
they just flow out and you don'thave the scale build up on your faucets
and stuff like that. And Iwill tell you yes, I put it
in Pasadena at my townhouse and ithas made a heck of a difference.
I saw the difference immediately when Idid it, and I'm still loving what's
going through with it. So whatit'll do on the inside of pipes.

(06:54):
You know, the inside of pipestypically have a lot of sludge build up
and it's not going to take thatout, but it will keep the mineral
deposits from bonding, and that's whatit's designed to do. You know,
it's much like a water softener, but it's not going to it's not going

(07:15):
to make the water software you getthat slick feeling. Now, I personally
have a water softener at my housein Dallas. Love it. I do
like that feeling, and you doget a little bit of that. Using
the flow tech you can tell it'snot as hard of water the way it's
working. But nonetheless, yeah,it's not going to be a total let's

(07:36):
clean out the pipe type thing. And I'm going to go on with what
he says here. My parents havea forty year old home, self built
with galvin iceed plumbing. Of course, there is scale lean build up inside
the pipes. This is not theproblematic galvin iceed pipe that causes for a
replumb of the entire house. Theyare on a well with good tasting water.

(07:59):
Never used a filter or softener whenI replaced the galvanized pressure tank recently,
there was a build up of onepoint twenty five supply top pipes two
and from the pressure tank. Iblew it out with the air, but
I know it's inside all the pipes. They also have small deposits gravel,

(08:22):
like at each faucet screen in thehome. So and that is what it
would help with because it doesn't letit form into those little chunks. And
that's also what builds up in thewater heater and causes you problems as well.
So again, the product is calledflow Tech And yes, DOS Plumbing

(08:46):
can put one in for you.I wanted to try it out first,
but if you want want to haveone put in, we can definitely help
you with that. To call doS Plumbing. Seven one three four,
seven three seven one five six.All right, got a question seven one
three two one two five eight sevenfour. That's seven one three two one

(09:07):
two five eight seven four. Let'shead to Missouri City. Cheryl. How
are you today? Hey, I'mjust fine. Thank you. Quick question.
I don't know the proper name, but we built a new house four
years ago and they put in thetype of water heater that only heats up
when the water runs. It's nota tank, it's a tank, So

(09:30):
you know tank okay, is thatwhat you call it? Okay? Tankless?
Yeah, that makes sense. Uh. Anyway, you know, I
every time you turn it on,it starts, and you know your prone.
I like hot water better than cold, but like when washing my hands
or just whatever, I always tendto go for the hot water faucet or
stick it. But I do too. Does that wear them out quicker?

(09:54):
You know? I mean turning themon real quick, so and it comes
on and then you turn it offlike five seconds later, and it so
that's on and off, on andoff, on and off. Does that
make them more out faster? Not? Really? Is yours electric or gas?
I think it's electric? Okay,No, it's not going to wear

(10:15):
it out any faster, you know. Basically that's what they're designed to do.
Uh. And that's how they saveenergy, is because they're only on
when the hot water is turned onand so uh yeah, it's it's designed
to do that already. And what'sthe life expectancy of these just waterless water

(10:35):
heaters? Thankless? The tankless aretypically have a life expectancy of around twenty
years. Oh really okay, yeah, they're usually about double that of a
tank water heater. Okay, great, well that's that's terribly awesome. I
love it. Well, thank youto you appreciate your bell. Not a

(10:58):
problem. You have a good weekend. Okay, bye bye gear and again
our number seven one three, twoone two five eight seven four. And
look, if you have a tanklesswater heater, if you have an older
one, there is maintenance that's supposedto been done on those, you know
where you got to get them flushedout and cleaned once a year. The

(11:20):
newer ones are pretty much self cleaning. You don't have to do all that
kind of stuff. But yes,the the the life expectancy of a tankless
is typically twice that of a tanktype water heater. Uh. The other
advantage on that is the tankless typicallyyou can put in a water sensor,

(11:41):
so even if it starts getting justa little drip inside the box, you
know where something is wearing out.It shuts the valve off to where you're
not dumping water out where. Whenyou got a tank type it gets a
little drip, it just expands andyou've got a big problem because you've got
thirty forty fifty gallons of water therethat's going to drain out you don't have

(12:03):
that problem with the tankless there's alot of advantages to tankless type water heaters.
Anyways, we're gonna take a quickbreak. We'll be back with more
Texas Home Improvements seven one three, two one two five eight seven four.

Texas Home Improvement with Jim Dutton.Hey, welcome back to Texas Home Improvement.
Seven one three two one two fiveeight seven four. That's seven one
three two one two. I've eightseven four and I'll see what I can
do to help you out here onTexas Own Improvement. We're going to head

(16:06):
out to friends Wood and John. This is Jim. How can I help
you? Him? Jim, Igot a question. I don't know if
I hope it's not a garden linequestion. We've got some water issues around
the property on our at our housewhere over the years, I think it's

(16:26):
a combination of subsidence and the neighborsbig trees where water is just puddling up
and pooling. Who what type ofcompany takes care of drainage and leveling off
property like that to get rid ofthose puddles and things? My company do?

(16:48):
West? Okay, well me do? I wondered? Yeah? Because
you know the things that cause foundationproblems is typically the moisture chain in the
soil and when you have standing waterin one area and another area that doesn't
that can really cause problems with afoundation. And so we do a lot
of drainage work, everything from regradingthe entire yard to just putting in you

(17:15):
know, French strains where needed orsurface strains where needed. But yes,
it definitely can help you with that. Yeah. Well, the two of
my neighbors they put in French strainsover the years, and in addition,
they've they've added about three or fourinches around the perimeter of their property.
And of course all that water hasgenerously come to mind to my yard now,

(17:38):
so I was wanting to level thatup a little bit. I mean,
since they've got friend strains. I'mnot going to be flooding anybody out
by doing that, but it wouldbe it would improve my situation a little
bit. And I've also got fenceposts that are starting to rock because of
that standing water. Oh yeah, around the bases. And uh so I

(18:00):
just give I can just give youguys a call any certain department I asked,
When you call the office, they'llthey'll ask you what you need and
they'll they'll get it set up foryou. Okay, all right, sounds
good. I'll get that taken careof Monday or Tuesday. I appreciate it
sounds good. Thank you, sir, uh huh bye bye, right,

(18:23):
And for anybody who does need acall, seven to one three four seven,
three seven one five six is thenumber for due West. And yes,
we'd be more happy to come outand take a look at it.
And especially the way the weather cycleshave been so far this year, lots
of drainage is needing to be done. I mean, if this is when

(18:44):
you see it. When it's adrought year, it's all foundation watering.
When it's a drainage year, uh, then it's all I mean, when
it's a wet year like this, then it's all drainage work that people are
needing to to save their foundations. So again, if we've got a home
improvement question seven one three two pointtwo five eight seven four Joe, Welcome

(19:07):
to Texas Home Improvement. Hey Jim, thanks for taking my call. We
have a home out here that webought. It's probably five or six years
old, and I've got two largegas water heaters upstairs and they're about forty
gallons each, forty or fifty gallonseach, and we're getting to the point

(19:29):
that after they get used, wehave a got a pretty good, good
sized family. There's six of us, and when it's shower time or bath
time or whatever afterwards, I'm hearinga lot of rumbling coming from those water
heaters, and I'm wondering if thatmight be sediment build up. It builds
up in the bottom. And sothese are gas water heaters, right,

(19:52):
yes, sir, Yeah, Andso what happens is the heating element is
having to heat all the sediment thatbuilds up in the bottom in order to
be heating the water. And you'llhear that stuff crackling and making all kinds
of noise. It's really not abig problem. It just becomes kind of
aggravating to listen to. But asfar as it causing any damage, it's

(20:18):
just build up and taking space inthe tank. It does require you to
use a little bit more energy toheat all of it, because you've got
to heat all that in order toheat the water. But I mean,
you're not in jeopardy of it springinga leak and causing your problems. Does
it accelerate the deterioration of the tankor anything? I should be word?

(20:40):
Is there anything I can do toget rid of what's there or prevent future.
How old are these tanks five issuers, Probably not at this point.
Typically what you do to avoid itis you drain the tanks every six to
twelve months. But you got tostart doing that in the first two years.
You know, once you start hearingthe problem like you've got now that

(21:03):
stuff is already solid in the bottom. It's not going to flow out,
okay. And then whenever we dochange them out, I would be interested
in going to a tankless kind ofa setup. But I remember, at
least from years past, the amountof gas that you were needing, the
gas supply was significantly bigger than thatfor a tank heaters. Still, you

(21:25):
are correct, but the newer oneshave drastically dropped the size down to where
almost always you can change out nowwith no problem. Okay, perfect,
Thanks so much for ELP. Youbet you take care. Now with that,
we're going to take a break fornews, traffic, weather, we'll
be back with more Texas home improvementsseven one, three, two point two,

(21:47):
five eight, seven four. Solet's talk about Revius shingles by f
Wave. You know, we hadhailstorms that hit the north side of Houston.
What was it Thursday night? Iguess, yes, Thursday nighters winds.
I don't remember anyways, you knowI've had hail damage at my home.

(22:07):
I went with the Reva shingles byf Wave. This is a Class
four shingle. It's one of thetoughest on the markets. And this shingle
not only past the two inch steelball test, but or two inch hal
test, but also a two inchsteel ball. It is durable. In
fact, my house in Dallas,I have that roof on. It got

(22:29):
hit with hal two weeks ago afterI put it on. It got hit
with hale that was almost as bigas my fist. No damage, no
problems, and it wud stands windsin the excess of one hundred and seventy
miles an hour. You want adurable shingle, the last one you'll ever
buy, you need to take alook at Reva shingles by f Wave.

(22:52):
What would the weekend be like withoutTexas Home Improvement? What would Texas be
like without George Straight Here's Lord, hey, welcome back to Texas Home Improvement.
Seven one three two one two fiveeight seven four. That's seven one

(23:15):
three two one two five eight sevenfour. And I'll see what I can
do to help you out here onTexas Home Improvement. Since we've got open
minds right now, I'm gonna jumpinto an email question and uh, this
came from Paul and he says,Hello, Jim, I'm building a new
home, have plans, but mywife has never dealt with looking at plans.

(23:38):
She is having trouble visualizing what weare planning to build. My question
is they're a service that will doa virtual walk through based off our plans
to make my wife feel confident andcomfortable with what we are about to build.
Thanks Paul. Well, Paul,I don't know about any specific service

(24:03):
that's available for that, but Iwill tell you most of the time,
plans are now done on computers thathave the ability to do that. So
you may want to one talk tothe person who did the plans for you.
They may have it already in theirsystem where you can go sit down
with them and take a look atit. Beyond that, most of your

(24:26):
builders will have something like that aswell, so they can take your plans,
load them into their system, andbe able to virtually walk you through
the homent. And this is prettycool technology. I mean, you know,
when it first came out, itwas like looking at cartoons when you
went through a house. Nowadays,it's almost like picture type quality walking through

(24:51):
the homes, and so you're ableto walk through and turn corners and walk
down the hallways and all this kindof stuff. Like I say, most
of the builders will have that availablefor you. Uh, So you know,
pick your start with your architect though, or you know where you got
the plans, start there, andif they don't have it, then start

(25:14):
talking to two builders. Uh,it's as far as who you're going to
have build it, and that willI think they'll be able to help you
out with that. And yes,it's very cool technology and and you know,
she she doesn't need to feel aloneon that. There's a lot of
people who can't visualize what it's gonnalook like, and so it does help

(25:36):
quite a bit. I will tellyou, as you are looking at builders
to build this project, you know, make sure you go out and see
some of their projects to to makesure that they're going to be doing a
type of project that you're wanting done. Because so often, uh, you
know, people will hire a builderand they're wanting to do a oh a

(26:00):
ranch style, conventional home, andthe builder likes to do modern type construction
and you two may just not jivewhen it comes time for the actual construction
of the home. So I makesure you spend some time checking into that.
You know what kind of home traditionallybuild again our number seven one three

(26:23):
two one two five eight seven four. By the way, if it's something
that you're looking at wanting to buildyourself, and by that I mean be
heavily involved in you know how it'sbeing done and all that stuff, talk
with the folks that you build it. Uh, that's that's a program where
you do the coordination of the subcontractors. They help you with contractors and stuff.

(26:48):
But I know they have the abilityto do the drawings this way where
you can do the three D renderingwalk through of it again seven to one
three two one two five eight sevenfour. That's seven one three, two
one two five eight seven four. This came from Alvin Odo Laporte and he

(27:15):
says, need the name of thecompany that makes insulation in roles that was
advertised on the show. I boughta a lot and need more lost the
name. I'm thinking what you're talkingabout is the Radiant barrier. Just the
name of the insulation for attics thatcomes in roll Okay, I'm sure what

(27:37):
you're talking about is the radiant barrierbecause that comes in four foot wide rolls.
Each role has a thousand square feeton it. And the name of
the company is ENERGYQ Radiant Barrier. And if you don't have a radium barrier
in your attic, yeah, thislays on the attic floor works great.

(27:59):
It's really not insulation, it's aradium barrier. And here's the difference between
insulation and a radium barrier. Insulationhas an R number. It's in it's
just a resistance. The higher thenumber, the longer it will take heat
to travel through it. Radiant barriersand windows and things like that, they
have an E number and the Enumber basically is a number as far as

(28:26):
how much of the heat will gothrough it. And because what a radium
barrier does is basically block the heattransfer. But yeah, what you're looking
for is energy Q Radiant Barrier.Their phone number one eight hundred, nine
hundred sixty two to twenty. That'sone eight hundred nine hundred sixty two to

(28:51):
twenty, or you can go toour website thhipro dot com and you will
find a link there for Energy QRadiant barrier and they'll be they'll be able
to help you out with it.So let's see here seven one three two
one two five eight seven four. That's seven one three, two one two

(29:15):
five eight seven four. Any homeimprovement question you have, feel free to
pick up the phone, give mea call, and I'll see what I
can do to help you out hereon Texas home improvement. Okay, this
one actually came from my hometown ofPasadena. It's from Kimberly and she says,
uh, my mom's home and I'mnot going to give the address.

(29:37):
Has this best of siding nineteen fortyseven built? Can we paint over it?
Or do we need to remove it? If we paint over it,
will it be Okay? I mustprize everybody that oldest best siding like that
was probably some of the most durablesighting you will ever get. The next

(30:00):
best thing to it is going tobe James Hardy siding. Now here's the
downsides of this asbestos siding. Itis extremely brittle. It's actually more brittle
than glass, and so you hitit, it cracks. But as far
as one it's on a structure,it's excellent. It holds paint really really

(30:22):
well, so feel free to paintit. The only time you will have
a problem with the asbestos shingles thatway is if you start trying to drill
it or scratch it or cut it, things like that, because asbestos is
a problem when it turns to dust. But when it's solid, like those
siding panels are, they're typically aboutfourteen inches tall two feet long, you

(30:49):
don't have to worry about it.It's not going to cause you any harm
in that state, only if youstart messing with it. And painting is
not messing with it. It's justsealing it up and you'll be fine with
it. All right. Let's talkreal quick about Texas Remodel Teams Window Division.
You know you'll hear a lot aboutdifferent window companies. Now Texas Remodel

(31:11):
Teams Window Division. They're different thanmost companies. First of all, they're
part of a remodeling company. Butthe remodeling division or the window division,
that's all they do is replacement windows. They go all over the city.
They have a four point nine starsout of five on Google Reviews and a
plus rating with the BBB and they'regoing to take great care of you.

(31:32):
If you get replacement windows from them. Now they got many different styles and
brands and types of windows free tochoose from, so they can match what
you're wanting to do with your home. So if you need windows, call
Texas Remodel Teams Window Division two eightone six one two fifty nine ninety one.

(31:52):
That's two eight one six one twofifty nine ninety one, uh and
help you out. When Jim Zuttonof Texas Home Improvement recommends a company,

for me. I really really appreciatethat. Guardian roof Systems. Click the

(32:35):
one of the best sidings on themarket. In fact, I will say
it is the best siding on themarket. I used to love as the

(34:59):
Welcome the Texas Home Improvement. Hey. How are you? Jim? Wonderful?
How about you? I'm doing allright? Thank you, I'm blessed.
Wow. How can I help youtoday? So? I have a
Clayton mobile home manufactured in twenty fifteenthat the skirtin is kind of you know,

(35:21):
it's getting a little out of shape. The wood foundation on it,
it's kind of rotten out. Ijust kind of want to get your opinion
on what should I do in termsof a replacement. I have money set
aside for the project. I'm justnot sure whether I should go, you
know, just kind of redo thesame set up with with with with the
wood, with the wood foundation andthe vinyl panels, or whether I actually

(35:44):
just go for a full wood setup. What are your opinions on that.
Have the vinyl started to deteriorate yet? No, But you know,
there's been a lot of wind stuff, and they're really susceptible to getting to
getting folded up and whatnot and gettingout of place. I've tried my best
to screw them in as best asI can, and I feel like I'm

(36:07):
just affecting the actual the actual homeitself by putting so many holes in it.
Yeah, So how tall is theskirting? Ah? Shoot, if
I'm not standing in front of herright now, I would say probably about
maybe thirty six inches. And that'sokay, No, that's that's three feet.

(36:30):
No, it's not three feet. It's not three feet. It's probably
more more like two feet. Okay. I'll tell you what I would use
is if I was going to puta wood back down there again, I'd
make sure it's treated lumber that isground contact treated. You know, there's
two different types of treatment for lumber. One is near ground and the other

(36:52):
is ground contact. So make sure, you use ground contact and I would
actually look putting James Hardy's siding asthe skirting. If you use a the
soffet material and you can use theone that's perforated, so you still have
the ventilation underneath there that you need. It won't rock, it's not gonna

(37:19):
buckle up on the wind. Imean, you're you're gonna have a permanent
fix to your problem. Okay,And so you're you're all so you're suggesting
the treated wood foundation still and notjust the sighting like into the ground basically
okay, correct, Now, thesiding can still go down into the ground.

(37:39):
That's because it's you know, JamesHardy is a cement based sighting.
It's not going to rot or deteriorateor anything. But you still want the
wood behind it as as you know, the wood framing behind it for something
to attach it to. Okay, yeah, and obviously that that can be
painted to. Right. I thinkhave some reg oh yeah in my community.

(38:01):
Okay, Okay, do you haveany suggested contractors that can do that
work for me so I can geta quote. You're down in Manville in
Manville, Yeah, I'm close toprom basically, right, right, I'm

Yes, sir, I was wantto see if you have a contact for
someone. About ten years ago,we replaced our joints are in our concrete

(39:09):
at the driveways, and all thewood had wroughted out. Had a gentleman
come back, come out, andI've lost his contact information. But I'm
not really looking for something that's likea prefab that you just pushed down in
there. He had something more likean elastic type thing that he had installed.
It really wore good, but overa period of time now it's kind

(39:30):
of seen its days. Was ita rubber ice type material that he?
Yes, sir, it was, yes, sir. Okay, that's actually
readily available even at the box stores. But the better product, the best
one I have found I would goto sun Belt Rentals, okay, and

(39:55):
they have it. They have itin large calking twobs, regular size,
and I think they even have itin buckets, and you know they that's
the problem. That's what it's designedfor, is those expansion joints. Now,
as far as somebody to do it, I don't know of anybody,

(40:15):
yes, sir, because it's it'stypically so small, most contractors don't mess
with it. Yeah, and Iunderstand that. Yeah, but that's what
I'm looking for though, in referenceto the type of material versus like I
say, like the pre made rubbersor whatever they are that yeah put down
in there. Yeah, Trimasla Trima'slab is a great product though. It

(40:37):
comes in a role that goes downin there and it snaps into place.
But what you're looking for is thatceiling. And Yeah, to go over
to some Belt rentals and they haveit on their shelves. Okay, I'll
sure do it, sir. Youbet, take care, thank you and
have a good day. Thank youby bye. K Yeah seven one three

the sewer lines under the home anda little while ago we had the drainage

(45:07):
question as far as the yard.Any place where there is something that's changing
the moisture under your foundation or aroundthe foundation is subject to cause foundation problems.
And that's you know where the underslabplumbing can really rereakavoc because you got
the old cast iron pipes that areleaking and it creates a wet spot.

(45:31):
And the initial thing that's going tohappen is that wet spot will expand and
pick the foundation up in that area, and so you end up having a
hump in your floor. Then overtime, when it gets oversaturated, that
soil will start turning to mush andit drops down and so you end up
with a low spot and the restof the foundation is still sitting like it

(45:52):
should. That's what wreaks havoc withyour foundation. And that is the reason
why I always tell you, youknow, all call us when you're having
these problems with the pipes, becauseif you dig tunnels underneath there and you

Home Improvement. Paul and Kingwood.Welcome to seven forty k tr H.
How can I help you? Hey, Jim, just a quick question.

(49:45):
I've got a paulme there in Kingwood. We've got a tall pine tree.
It's probably golly like hunter foot tall, pretty well mature tree, but it's
growing up right next to the foundation. That how what happens if I cut
that down? Is I gonna wouldthat affect the foundation? Yes, but

(50:10):
the tree is going to affect thefoundation as well. Right now, the
thing you have to look at ishow old is the tree? Is it
older than the house or was itplanted or grew after the house was built.
I want to say it grew afterthe house was built. If it
grew after the house is built, you typically are okay to go ahead and

(50:35):
cut the tree down or put rootbarriers, all that kind of stuff.
If a tree is older than thehouse, that's when you don't want to
lose it, because the soil isused to the tree taking moisture out,
and once you take the tree outor root barrier, the moisture content starts

(50:57):
rising in the soil and we'll actuallypick the house up higher than it was
built. But you know, ifthe if the tree, like like I
said, if it was planted afterthe house was built or when the house
was built, or it was verysmall when the house was built, and
you know it's grown up over theyears. Now it's taken a lot more
moisture than originally, you're safe togo ahead and take it out. Okay,

(51:24):
I've needed to find out. Thankyou, no, you bet you
take care and again our number sevenone three two one two five eight seven
four. That's seven one three twoone two five eight seven four ralph and

(51:44):
a leaf. How can I helpyou today? Uh, you have spoken
about gutters before. How will Iknow if I actually need gutters? They're
on there now, But it seemslike every few years my wife has a
problem. She goes up on thelot, well every couple of months it

(52:05):
goes up on the ladder and almostfalls off trying to clean these gutters.
But I sure would like to convinceher that maybe we don't need gutters,
like you had mentioned once before.Sure, sure in some cases. Well
here's the deal. If you're wherethe water would come off and it's not

(52:27):
going to be cutting into the soil, Uh, it's in an area where
the water could run off away fromthe foundation. Uh, you're safe to
do away with those gutters. Typicallywhere we need gutters is above doorways,
patios, things like that, orto control a large roof area that comes

(52:47):
down in a sheet and cuts intothe soil, or you know, destroying
the plants underneath. And then youwould need a gutter, but in most
areas we actually don't need them.I see. Just that's interesting, very
interesting. You know, I getthe feeling that you don't need gutters because

(53:08):
your house is built on a hill, is your foundation of whatever you have
built, like at a high levelor something. No, I mean even
on flat lots typically between houses, like if you're in a regular residential neighborhood,

(53:29):
for instance, the soil slopes downfrom the house into basically a V
shape, a lower spot that runsout to the street to drain the water
off. Yeah, you don't needa gutter in that situation. Anytime you
can get the water five to tenfeet away from the foundation where it's not

(53:51):
standing and puddling, you really don'thave to have a gutter. Okay,
great, I'll write that down.Thank you so much. You bet you
take care, all right. Andyou know, obviously if you're on a
lot that is on a slope, hey, it's he it's easier. But

(54:14):
gutters are just are way overused. And I'm not saying we don't use gutters.
I'm just saying they're overused because puttinggutters on a home you have downsides
to that as well. I meanwhere the fasteners for the gutters go through.
It creates an area where water canpenetrate and causes wood rot. And

(54:37):
that's almost behind every gutter because ittypically if the water is overflowing, it
overflows the backside as well and hencecauses wood rot. Now, if you
got hearty siding or something, yourproblem is less because that's cement based and

(54:58):
it's not going to rot. Butbehind that is still would that the fasteners
go through, and so you canstill get some damage that way, but
it's not near as bad. Sobut yeah, gutters are a necessary evil
in some areas, I mean ofyour home, and that's just just the

(55:22):
way it is. But we kindof overuse them anyways. Got a question
seven one three two one two fiveeight seven four. That's seven one three
two one two five eight seven four, And I'll see what we can do
to help you out here on TexasHome Improvement. You know, I was

(55:43):
looking at a product that I wasgoing to talk to you about. It's
it's a window film because I geta lot of calls, especially at this
time of year, as far asthe heat coming in through the windows and
how it's affecting floors and we're startingto have more and more issues with sliding

(56:05):
glass doors affecting some of these vinylplank floors that we're putting in. It
bakes them and it makes them startbubbling up and stuff, and so we
started looking into how can this bestopped. Well, there are window films
available that will stop that problem. In fact, Concord Window Film is a

(56:28):
company that they will actually work withyou where you can do it yourself so
you don't have to get a lotof money into it. But it blocks
up to ninety nine percent of theUV rays from coming through your windows,
which will help maintain those floors, help maintain temperatures, things like that.
It's kind of like a radiant barrier. It stops the heat from coming through.

(56:51):
And you know, we did somechecking on it, and you know,
if you want to get something likethat, here's their number day eight
two zero six one four one threeuh, or you can go to their
website windowfilm dot com and take alook at it. But either way,

(57:13):
if you're looking for a way tostop having this problem, that this is
what we came up with, sotake a look at it. With that
being said, if you got ahome proven question seven one three, two,
one, two, five, eightseven four. Let me talk to
you about Reva shingles. Now.I have Reva shingles on my home.

(57:35):
Love it. I don't have toworry about uh storms coming in and blowing
my shingles off because it withstands windsin the excess of one hundred and seventy
miles an hour. I don't haveto worry about hail coming in and tearing
my roof up because it wouich passesthe two inch hail test as well as
the two inch steel ball test. And I will tell you I got hit

(57:55):
with hail that was well in excessof two inches last week, not a
mark on the roof. It didexactly what it was supposed to do.
In fact, the hail was probablythree and a half inches. I mean
it was bad stuff. If you'relooking for a way to put the last
roof on your home where you don'thave to worry about it, take a

(58:20):
look at Revia Shingles by f Wave. You can go to our website thchipro
dot com and click on the linkfor Revia Shingles by f Wave. You
know, if you're having a sewerleak under your homes, foundation. That's
something that really needs to be addressed, but it needs to be addressed by
somebody who can take care of theplumbing as well as the homes foundation.

(58:44):
That's why you want to call doWest, both the plumbing company and the
foundation repair company to make sure thatyour homes foundation stays intact years after the
plumbing work is done. When youwant the best, call due West seven

that did it. Kudos to Guardian, good job for me. I

(59:27):
really really appreciate that. Guardian roofSystems. Click the link under Trusted Contractors

window film. But you know,if you need replacement windows, and you
know you do if you got thoseold single pain aluminum frame windows, or
you got double pain frame windows nowthat are leaky. Now, my son

(59:50):
has some windows that they were doublepain and all that stuff. But the
the uh where the windows slide andeverything, he actually had wasp baby will
come through. The gaps were justtoo big, the windows weren't sealed anymore.

says big ass Texas. It's thechimn welcome back. Seven one three two

This is a Jim. How canI help you? Then? How you

(01:01:19):
doing? Wonderful? How about you? Okay? So let me let me
ask you. I always love yourshow at what you do. Uh.
But we get all these letters fromlike in texts using like and empowered all
these people to buy insurance on theiruh you know, equipment to the house
on the air conditioning. Their conditionbreaks, they take care of that.

(01:01:45):
What do you think about all that? Most of the time, I don't
don't care for it because I meanthe way I the way I look at
is, we know these are wearitems. We know, oh, they're
going to wear out. And ifwe took that same money and set it
aside every year, just like they'rebasically doing, we'd have the money to

(01:02:07):
fix it when the time came. But we don't do that, and so
it hedges our bet when we getit. But you got to look at
the cost of it. Some ofthem are so expensive it just doesn't make
sense. I'm not a huge fanof home warranties. I mean, when
you buy a house, you typicallyget that home warranty, and that initial

(01:02:30):
year it's cheap, it's dirt cheap. But every year they substantially increase the
price until they price it where it'sjust not worth having. But people are
used to having it, and sothey keep paying it. And some of
these other lines, for the gaslines, for instance, I mean some
of them are starting at what fourteendollars a month or something like that,

(01:02:52):
but then down the road it justgets outrageous. I think that pay or
pay place your water ladder, gasline. It's not all that expensive,
is it. It's really not.I mean, if you look at it
this way, fourteen dollars a month, so we're one hundred and forty one

(01:03:15):
hundred and fifty eight dollars a year. If you if you paid that just
ten years, you probably got almostenough to replace the line. Yeah,
we've never had any problems at ourhome is fifty five years old. We've
never had any problems with the gasladder, the water line, or any

(01:03:36):
of those things. Well you will, though, I mean over time,
these these are ware items. Theywill have to be replaced a lot of
times. We all look at ourhomes as though, Okay, it's built,
it's done. I just don't haveto do anything. I don't have
to replace windows. I don't haveto worry about things like that. But

(01:03:58):
I'm sorry I have you're a homefifty five years at home we're repairing things.
Oh yeah, but the water lines, the sewer lines, the gas
lines, all that stuff eventually doesneed to be replaced. Yeah. The
other thing is that the East EnlightenedPower has a thing for your air condition

(01:04:18):
if it breaks down, that theyrepair that. You know, they'll give
you a new one, but they'llrepair it. Yeah. And you know
there's other warranties out there. Imean at Due West we have air conditioning
systems now where the compressors and stuffcome with twelve year warranties. And we

(01:04:42):
have warranties that we offer where it'stwelve years. You don't have to pay
for materials, don't have to payfor the service. I mean, it's
everything's covered under the warranty. Ithink times have changed, I mean I
get it, but some of theseinsurance things that they're doing doesn't always make

(01:05:04):
sense for the consumer. So thethe what were they what are they charging
on a AC warranty like that,I don't know. I'd never taken one
out, and I was hearing,Okay, gosh, if there's anybody that
would know these things, Jim Duckettis a gap. Yeah, when I've
looked at him, it just neverhas made money since to me any sense.

(01:05:28):
Okay, I'm gonna put my thingsin recycle. Oh ky, okay,
all right, you have a goodone, Thank you, sir.
Bye bye again our number seven onethree two one two five eight seven four
Kennedy over my golf gate. Howcan I help you? Well, Jim,

(01:05:53):
my air conditioner isn't working. Uh. One day I came home and
uh, it was just blowing airat eighty degrees. I changed out the
thermostat and new batteries. That wasn'tit. The breaker had tripped, so
I put the breaker back on.But when I pulled the thermostat off,
I was testing the wires and thewires that runs to the Uh. The

(01:06:16):
outside unit was only giving me aboutfour and twenty seven on everything else,
So I'm not getting the signal somewhere. Yeah, you've gone over my head
already. Okay, Well, you'vegot your four wires that go to the
AC unit behind the thermostat, andhonestly, that would be something I would

(01:06:41):

need to when you reach out thatway, make sure you specify you want
to be reached out by email.I know a lot of companies are starting
to go that way, and peopleare using text messaging and things like that.
But uh, one reach out doesn'tnecessarily mean there's an issue. There
got a question seven one three, two one two five eight seven four.

(01:09:21):
Let's talk about American Standard Air.You know, I love American Standard systems.
These are high end quality air conditioningsystems and it's been my choice since
nineteen ninety eight. Nationally recognize forexcellence for performance, reliability, and customer
satisfaction. In fact, American Standardheating and air conditioning systems they can take

(01:10:08):
And you know, if you goto their website, make sure you take
a look at the variable speeds. That's what I'm running in my house now.
Love it. Jim Dutton, I'ma contractor, a simple man,
That's who I am. A simplenew fragrance, Oh yes, a fragrance
for the bold home improvement man.I have fun doing this cock the new

(01:10:30):
fragrance from Jim Dutton. That's whyI do it. Cock Cock. It
smells like Texas cock. Look forit right next to the turpentine on Aisle
five. Cock. Oh, welcomeback to Texas Home Improvements Your Total Home

(01:10:56):

question you have, pick up thephone, give me a call and I'll
see what I can do to helpyou out here on Texas Home Improvement,
your Total Home Improvement Source. Withthat being said, let's head back into

(01:11:18):
the calls and as promised, Lynnyour next How can I help you?
Lynn? Hello? Man? Didn'tyou can I help you? Yeah?
No, Jim doesn't go. Jimdoesn't. Hey. I wanted to thank
you first about USA Insurance. AreUSA Insulation Insulation? Uh huh Yeah.

(01:11:45):
They came out and did my housea couple of months ago. I'm looking
forward to it saving me a bunchof money this summer. Good. Their
work was really good. You know, they finished it up in one day.
So uh. But my question wasone of my questions was I need
a sealer to seal up the expansionjoints in my driveway. Okay. You

(01:12:12):
know I needed a name of asealer. Do you have a name of
a sealer I can get at oneof the big shops or something. Uh.
If you go into a Sunburst Rentals, Okay, they they have a
product in there for doing expansion jointsin concrete. Okay. And Sunburn that's

(01:12:35):
that's yep. Yeah, and uhun Bird virtually all their all all their
stores have it. Okay, excuseme, huh yes, sir, okay.

(01:12:58):
And uh. Now there's another productout there that I like to use
that is a it comes in arole. It's it's it's called Trima slab
and basically it you clean out thegroove there a little bit and they make
in different widths where it pops downin there and seals it. It's very

(01:13:23):
easy to install. I personally likeit better. But a lot of people
like to use the the regular ceilings, uh, just because they think it
glues everything together and keeps water fromgoing down. But that Trema slab,
for me, that's what I preferto use. And what's the name of

(01:13:44):
it is Trima slab. Trima slabs L a B and they actually have
it in. Some of the AceHardware stores carry it. It's made down
and Lee City. Uh. Someof the Ace Hardware stores carry it.
Otherwise you can order it from theirwebsite trim Dash a dash slab dot com.

(01:14:11):
Uh. But it I love thatproduct. It's very easy to put
in and lasts a very long time. Okay. Uh. And and one
more question. Uh, the brickon this house. I live in Bear
Creek. The brick on this houseis real porous. Is there anything I
can do? I mean, themortar work is bad everything, I mean

(01:14:38):
as far as that goes. Isthere anything I can do short of getting
it rebricked? Oh? Yeah, there's seilers you can put on the brick.
Uh. There's coatings you can puton, like if you want to
put like a oh rhinoshield is oneof the coatings that you could put on

(01:15:02):
that actually would work very well. But there's clear seilers that you can add
on to it. You just putit in a pump up spray or spray
it on. It soaks into thebrick. It soaks into the mortar and
keeps it from being so porous.Okay, do you have anyone that could

(01:15:24):
come out. I mean, becausethere's actually some bricks that need to be
replaced. Oh. Absolutely, Let'sget you their number here real quick.

(01:15:46):
Well where did he go? Ido have a guy that I use on
a regular basis, but I don'tsee him on on my list today.
Uh. Anyway, mister Brick iswho I typically call, mister Brick okay,

(01:16:10):
yep, or Brick doctor nine. No, that's Dallas, the Dallas
guy. But yeah, mister Brickis uh uh the one I call.
Okay, all right, I'll givemy call. And again, thank you
for taking on the USA installation workedout good for me, excellent. My

(01:16:32):
pleasure worked out excellent, you know. Okay, thank you, Jim,
You take care and again our numberseven one three two one two five eight

(01:16:54):

meant. Uh. I was sayingSunburst because Sunburst shutters. But the rental
company where you go to get thatstuff is sun Belt Rentals. Anyways,

Smile you woke up in Texas thismorning. This is Texas Home Improvement
with Jim Dutton. Hey, welcomeback to Texas Home Improvement. Seven one
three two one two five eight sevenFour's head out to Montgomery. John,

(01:22:42):
Welcome to seven forty k t H. Thank you sir, and the perfect
music, because I've got the bluesabout some woodsiding. Uh my d logs
on my house at the bottom probablythree feet are just roddy and falling off,
and on the north and the eastsides, it looks like they're just

(01:23:06):
separating. No matter what we've doneand how good we try to install it,
they separate and it's leaking and I'mafraid that I'm getting some wetness back
behind them. Would it be bestin your opinion if I just took all
of those down and replaced it likewith stucco, or is there something you

(01:23:26):
can do with d logs that helpsit to keep from separating even after we
seal it and paint it. Andyou're saying d logs, yeah, they
look like a log cabin log, except they're flat on the back and then
they they okay, slip in.Yeah. I just want to make sure
we were talking about the right thatyou know that I had the right thing.

(01:23:47):
You know what I would do israther than putting a stucco, look
down there is put a back orboard type material down there that you could
put stone on it. Oh,and that would give you the scone,
the stone wains coating with the logson top, it would look gorgeous.

(01:24:11):
It would seal up and you don'thave to worry about the stuff coming off
anymore. Got you? Now?Would I have a tin roof and I
have no gutter system, would thatcontribute to those bottom logs? Maybe one
hundred percent? Yes, okay, because the water is splashing up on them.
Got you? And that's where Iwas talking about on gutters earlier.

(01:24:33):
There's areas where we need gutters. Now, I think gutters are way overused.
But when you've got a log typesituation like that, or any type
of wood siding that's close to theground that way, that's where you would
need it. But on you know, like where I'm talking about to put
Now, you got a couple ofways you could go with that. One
is use a concrete backer board. You put a seiler behind it. The

(01:24:57):
concrete backer board and when I sayit seeler, I shouldn't say seiler.
You'd put like a tievek type materialbehind it, put the concrete backer board
on it. And then they makestones that you could either uh you know,
thin ones that you could glue on, or they make coatings that can
be carved to look like stone. But I personally think then that would look

(01:25:19):
gorgeous on there and eliminate your problem. Okay, when you say backer board,
if I go into a business, what would I ask for backer board?
A concrete backer board? Concrete backerboard? Okay, man, I
sure appreciate the help in the info. You bet you take care all right?

(01:25:39):
You too? And again seven onethree, two one two five eight
seven four. You know those logshe was just talking about. They're extremely
popular up in the Northern States. You don't see him too much here,
but they do look gorgeous. Alanand Laporte, How can I help you?

(01:26:00):
How you doing? I'm a goodlong time listener. I enjoy your
show and the customer of your companyand your son. I have to not
take issue with you, but giveyou some information about my experience with homeowners
warranties. For thirty years, I'vehad two major companies on two different houses.
I switched from one to the other, and I got to tell you,

(01:26:23):
I'm eighty three. I told themif everyone an old fat man for
a commercial, I'd been able todo it because I have had everything from
a huge pool heater replaced back thirtyyears ago to air conditioning, furnaces,
dishwashers, stoves, electrical plumbing.I mean, now what they've done is

(01:26:48):
they cut a lot of allowances down, but they're still for sixty bucks a
month or thereabouts. To me,it's a great buy. It's also my
comfort. I don't have to worryabout some major coming up. So I
mean, I'm not giving the nameof anybody because I'm not trying to be
a show for anybody. Not aproblem, but I have you know,

(01:27:10):
I don't know about other people, but I have good experience. Yes,
they're very technical and if there's anyreason they can give an excuse for not
covering, they'll do it. Butoh yeah, something bridge and it's straightforward.
It's replaced, and the copeys aregoing up. I've got a contract
on want to house for forty fivehours copey but now they're close to seventy
five to one hundred. So itmakes you think twice before calling them out

(01:27:32):
if it's a little tiny thing.But anyway, that's my comfort and I'm
not trying to sell anybody anything. And I do thank you what you do.
You do a great service for thepublic, So thank you, sir,
Oh, my pleasure. And youknow, for some people it is
great. In for a lot ofpeople it's not because here's the issue that

(01:27:56):
most people run into. Well, and you mentioned air conditioners, so they'll
call on the air conditioners not working. We've got to have somebody come out.
The warranty place will schedule and firstof all, a lot of times
takes a couple of days. Thenthey'll schedule a large window and people are
having to take time off of workand it just becomes a big headache.

(01:28:18):
Form Now I'm not saying that's foreverybody. And you know, quite frankly,
you schedule with an HVAC company, you're gonna have to wait on their
schedule as well. But uh yeah, for some people it's a great thing.
For most people, it's not thesame experience, is what you've been
having. And but I do appreciateyour call. Oh you take care,

(01:28:42):
sir, Bye, take care bye. Hey. Let's talk real quick about
Ready Seal. Now, this isa great do it yourself product. You
can stay and seal any wood outsidein just one simple step, and you
can use it on inside wood aswell. But you know, Ready Seal

is a product that you got awood fence and you want to keep it
looking great for years and years tocome. Put Ready Seal on it.
You don't get that grain effect thatmakes all these fences look so old all
the time. You got a deckthat you want to protect and extend the
life of it, put Ready Sealon it. It stays looking gorgeous for

(01:29:25):
years. Now do you have toreapply sure every few years. You've got
to spray it on, roll iton, brush it on. However you
put it on. You got toclean it up and add more. But
you know that's better than having toreplace all the wood, isn't it?
And like I said, this isa gorgeous way to keep the wood looking
around your home. So if yougot outdoor wood fences, decks, patio
