(00:00):
Welcome back to Ask Allison.
Today's question is a combination of a few that I've gotten lately,
and they all start the same.
.“Can I increase my rate if I'm …” and then they finish with various things.
“Can I increase my rate if I'm exclusively doing telehealth?”
“If I'm only seeing people during work hours?”
“If I've been open for only a year?”
“If I'm not fully licensed?”
(00:20):
“If I'm not certified in my modality or niche?”
So we're gonna answer this today.
First, I wanna thank TherapyNotes® for sponsoring Ask Allison.

(00:42):
and telehealth incredibly easy.

(01:03):
So the short answer to this question is “Yes, you can.”
You can raise your fee,
but you all know I'm not gonna leave it there.
So I think everyone who has sent me these questions knows that they can.
They're just afraid to. They don't need my permission.
They know it's not a law barring it.
From feeling, like it's allowed.
(01:23):
It just it feels like a scarier venture,
and they've convinced themselves
of some ideas about raising their rates that aren't true.
So if you want or need to raise your rate,
there are a few instances in which I discourage you.
If you raised them 2 months ago,
I wouldn't raise them on existing clients right now,
but definitely go ahead with the new fee for any new clients coming in.
(01:43):
If you need a steady income, have lost clients with fee raises in the past,
and don't know how to get more clients in the door,
I'd learn how to market before you raise your rate.
And we teach you how to market in the Abundance Party.
We love to support people in there.
Otherwise, by all means, raise your rate.
Raise your rate based on the math of what you need to make the life you live,
(02:05):
what you wanna live, contribute to retirement,
take vacations, etcetera.
When you get squirrely about your fee increase,
look at your math. When your fee is based on math,
it helps you hold the boundary. It's rooted in something real,
instead of some random number that you picked.
Don't expect yourself to not have feelings about it.
Don't expect those feelings to be
(02:26):
sorted through before you raise your rate.
You'll handle a certain level of discomfort before starting to raise your rate,
then as you're raising it,
you'll find this next level of discomfort.
You've felt far more discomfort in your life.
Don't tell yourself this is too much. When raising your rate,
first hop on to your website,
any other marketing that has your fee written down
(02:46):
and in your paperwork,
and replace the old fee with the new, then clearly communicate with
your clients about the fee increase; both in session
and in writing.
We have scripts for both in the Abundance Party.
Today's free worksheet gives you my favorite resources for fee setting.
This calculator helps you think through all those life expenses that you now have
(03:07):
as well as what you're gonna need in the future.
You can find that in the link in my bio,
and I am excited for these people who are wanting to raise their rate to just do it
and manage the feelings that come with that.
Alright, have a great day.
