The Objectivism Book Study met through 2022 to study Objectivism: The Philosophy of Ayn Rand, by Leonard Peikoff.
Welcome to Objectivism Book Study (Week 15) — Reason and Emotion.
“Philosophy is the science that defines the proper relationship between a volitional consciousness and reality.”
-Leonard Peikoff (Induction in Physics and Philosophy, session 6)
This week we are discussing the following sections in Objectivism: The Philosophy of Ayn Rand:
Ch. 5 – Reason (Introduction) 152
Ch. 5 – Emotions as a product of ideas 153-158
In this section we look at the implications of Objectivist epistemology for our choices about how to live as human beings.
We must commit to live by the guidance of what we learn through observation and conceptualization. That is the choice to be logical and rational. It means we should not only aim to use reason on occasion, but aim to actually live by reason.
The choice to live by reason is the basis of all morality. Within this chapter we’re also going to look at the relation between reason and emotion, reason and faith, and reason and God’s special revelation.
