Target Audience
This activity is targeted toward primary care and geriatric healthcare providers and advanced providers.

Statement of Need
This activity will discuss the steps to safe prescribing of opioids for providers. In that chronic pain is commonly treated in the primary care office and back pain is one of top ten reasons patients visit health care providers, providers should be aware of how to safely prescribe controlled substances if selected as the treatment for these patients.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this offering, the participant will be able to:

  1. Describe the risks and benefits of prescribing and tapering controlled substances.
  2. Identify the key components of safe prescribing of controlled substances.
