Sam says "I'm a passionate coach, consultant, speaker and facilitator who comes alive in service of those who live to serve others. My practice serves mission driven leaders, healers and helpers in their work to heal the world without harming themselves.   Since 2013 I've coached, taught and consulted with leaders and healers in community clinics, acute care hospitals, mental health programs and a pandemic response center on their path toward elevated impact greater fulfillment, and enhanced wellbeing for themselves, their teams, and the people they serve." "As a mission-motivated empath, a first generation college graduate, and the child of two beautiful and complicated humans who left home in their early teens and survived by the skin of their teeth, I've always had a deep sense that my purpose was to be of service to others.   Thanks to my own experiences of perfectionism, inherited beliefs from my parents that life has to be hard to be meaningful,  internal pressure to make something beautiful from the hardship they experienced, and naturalized norms of burnout just being "part of the job" in mission-driven work, I'm all too familiar with the struggle between being a whole and happy human and having the impact we feel we're meant to have in the world. My clients are walking a similar path. They are leaders, healers and helpers who get out of bed in the morning to be of service to others and have unwittingly eroded their own thriving in the process. I know that it’s my calling to coach mission-driven leaders like me in health care and the caring professions. Though the social impact sector is infamous for cultures that normalize privileging everyone else’s needs above our own and valorizing burnout as a sign of mission commitment, our mission can only endure as long as our own wellbeing does. The COVID crisis and the resulting impacts on both our mental and emotional health have forced us to recognize that supporting resilience is literally a matter of life and death. We can’t afford to consider investing in our own growth and thriving a luxury for when times are stable. Without it, we operate completely from the toxic combination of our self limiting beliefs and unconscious unhelpful habits, harming our own wellbeing, the wellbeing of those who look to us, and our ability to effectively serve our community. Both our individual wellbeing and our effectiveness as leaders HAS to start with us leading ourselves. This is the wild, messy, exhilarating and invaluable work of balancing our being with our doing. This is work I'm committed to doing for myself. And this phase of my life is about helping mission-driven leaders, healers, helpers, and the organizations they work in do the same. Mission doesn't need to mean martyrdom. Helping doesn't have to hurt." #burnout #lifecoach #mentalhealth #wellness #recovery https://samshapirocoaching.com Hosted by Felipe Blue, LCAS, CSI of The More Than Therapy Podcast located at 201 W Main Street Suite 316, Durham, NC 27701. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/morethantherapy/message
