I den siste perioden av livet flyttet Leonardo en hel del, og han endte opp i Frankrike, hvor han jobbet ved hoffet til Frans I. Leonardo var blitt lei av å male, og han brukte tiden sin på å studere geologi, vann og byplanlegging. Men han hadde ikke sluppet kunsten helt, for med seg i bagasjen hadde han et maleri av en kvinne med et mystisk smil han aldri følte seg helt ferdig med.
