Da Hunter dekket valgkampen for Rolling Stone i 1972 fikk både han og magasinet en ny tyngde i USA, men kjendislivet og den ekstreme rusbruken hadde en pris. Rolling Stone bestemte seg for å sende Hunter til Zaire. Der skulle han dekke "the Rumble in the Jungle", boksekampen mellom Muhammad Ali og George Foreman, men dette skulle vise seg å bli den første av mange reportasjer som aldri materialiserte seg.
