Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to the Functional Medicine Podcast with
Dr McMinn and Coach Lindsey.
We're coming to you from McMinnClinic in Birmingham, alabama,
where Dr McMinn is anintegrative in functional MD and
Lindsey Matthews is aregistered nurse and IIN
certified health coach.
In this podcast, we'll bediscussing the latest
information on a wide range oftopics in the field of

(00:21):
functional medicine, which looksfor the root cause of disease,
and integrative medicine, whichincorporates both conventional
and alternative therapies.
Our overall goal is to help yoube the best that you can be in
mind, body and spirit.
The following discussion is foreducational purposes only and
is not intended to diagnose ortreat any disease.
Please do not apply anydisinformation without approval

(00:42):
from your personal doctor.
And now on to the show with DrMcMinn and Coach Lindsey.

Speaker 3 (00:53):
Hello and welcome to the Functional Medicine Podcast,
an evidence-based podcast onintegrative and functional
medicine.
I'm your host, dr Jim McMinn, and I'm here with my BFF and
co-host, lindsey Matthews RN.

Speaker 2 (01:05):
Thanks, Dr Mack.
Good to be back with all youlisteners.
Welcome back to the show.

Speaker 3 (01:11):
And I'm actually going to call this a mini-cast
today, since it's going to be alittle bit shorter than our
usual podcast, I come to thinkof it as really more of an
announcement than it is a truepodcast.
For those of you who have beenlistening to us for quite a
while, and as the mainFunctional Medicine Podcast
implies, coach Lindsey and I arefully engaged in a functional
and integrative approach tohealth and wellness.
Our goal has always been tobring you up-to-date,

(01:33):
evidence-based and unbiasedinformation on a wide variety of
health care related subjects, with practical take-home
solutions from a functional andintegrative perspective, in
order to help you optimize yourhealth in mind, body and spirit,
and in so doing, we hope thatwe've helped and informed a few
of you listeners along the way.

Speaker 2 (01:51):
Now, for those of you who are new to the podcast, let
me briefly clarify two keyterms that we'll be referring to
today.
The term functional medicinemeans that we always look for or
treat the root cause of theproblem, and the term
integrative medicine refers towhat Dr Mack calls the expanded

(02:13):
toolbox of therapies beyonddrugs and surgeries, like
nutrition, exercise, stressmanagement, that good microbiome
and gut health, sleep andexercise, as well as many other
powerful modalities which, ifused properly, can have amazing
preventative and curative healtheffects and really impact your

(02:35):
wellness.
So by embracing these concepts,we've been able to help
countless people who otherwisemight have fallen through the
cracks of modern medicine, andit really helps optimize those
folks to their physical, mentaland emotional health peaks.

Speaker 3 (02:49):
However, since I retired last year from full-time
clinical practice, I have hadsome time to sort of think about
, reflect on the podcast.
Coach Lindsay and I are soincredibly grateful for our
listeners and for the growththat we have seen over the years
with the functional medicinepodcast.
But it occurred to me that thevast majority of people out
there looking for this very kindof information about health and

(03:09):
wellness are not familiar withthe term functional medicine and
therefore they don't know thesearch word.
And even if they do stumbleacross the term functional
medicine, they probably reallydon't know what it is.
So to some degree, for allthese years we've been really
just preaching to the choir tothose folks who are already
interested in functionalmedicine.

Speaker 2 (03:26):
Now.
We love the dedicated army ofpeople out there who are already
familiar and interested infunctional medicine and we're
happy to share with the choir, but we also want to introduce
this powerful approach tomedicine to a whole new group of
folks who could potentiallybenefit from some of our
discussions about theseimportant health issues.

(03:46):
So bottom line goal of thispodcast is to help as many
people as possible to be thebest version of themselves
physically, mentally andemotionally.

Speaker 3 (03:56):
So, in order to be found by and to appeal to this
wider audience who don't knowthe term functional medicine, we
have decided, after muchconsideration, that we will
change the name from thefunctional medicine podcast to
something that better connectswith a broader swath of
listeners.
Yes, as the New Year approaches, we will adopt a new name for
our podcast, and our new podcastname will be Drumroll Please

(04:19):
Goach, there you go.
Wellness Connection MD.
You know it's kind ofinteresting, coach.
Years ago I had a podcastcalled Wellness Connection.
I did it for quite a few yearsand then got out of the podcast
business and, as I went back in,that name was no longer
available.
It's just the WellnessConnection, but we're going to
just do a variation of thatcalled Wellness Connection MD

(04:39):
and, as the name applies, ourgoal is to connect with as many
listeners as we can in order tointroduce them to an
evidence-based wellness model offunctional, integrative and
lifestyle medicine.

Speaker 2 (04:50):
Don't worry, though, folks, even though we are
changing our name, anintegrative and functional
approach is in our blood.
It's not going anywhere.
In fact, we will continue toenthusiastically promote
functional medicine.
We just hope, with this namechange, we can bring new people
into the wellness family whomight benefit from a better

(05:11):
understanding of functional,integrative and lifestyle-based
medicine.

Speaker 3 (05:16):
Well, lindsay, there's so many people who
really want to do the rightthing for their health, for
instance, when it comes to dietand lifestyle, but they just
don't know what the right thingis and, sadly, in many instances
, neither do their providers.
I can tell you for a fact thatthe vast majority of physicians
get little to no training inthings like nutrition and
lifestyle medicine.
So that's where the WellnessConnection MD comes in.
We're here to shedevidence-based light on these

(05:38):
important cornerstones of healthand wellness.

Speaker 2 (05:41):
When we look at the epidemic of chronic disease,
from heart disease to thingslike metabolic disease and then
the functional integrative model, it really provides a
cost-effective and powerfulapproach which can greatly
benefit countless people, bothin terms of prevention and
treatment, and this has enormouspotential for individuals and

(06:03):
for our society as a whole.

Speaker 3 (06:06):
And with our aging population, a drug-centered
approach is resulting inskyrocketing healthcare costs,
while a wellness model would, for some patients, produce
better results with improvedquality of life and dramatically
lower healthcare costs forsociety as a whole.
So with Wellness Connection MD,we will do our part to respond.
So we promote an evidence-basedpath to a more holistic
approach to disease and wellness.

(06:27):
And, due to this name change, this will be our last podcast by
the name of Functional MedicinePodcast.

Speaker 2 (06:34):
If you've been a listener and or a supporter of
the Functional Medicine Podcastfor a while, then we both want
to thank you from the bottom ofour hearts and please stick with
us and check us out on theother side as the Wellness
Connection MD podcast.
