2020年，因为翻译《武汉日记》，加州大学洛杉矶分校的白睿文（Michael Berry）教授成为网络攻击的对象。网暴持续了将近三年，他甚至经常收到死亡威胁。作家方方同样遭受重创。她的作品无法出版、再版，连她的名字都几乎从公共空间消失。
在这样的背景下，白睿文重新拾起方方的两部小说译稿。《软埋》讲述在灭绝人寰的土改运动中个人的命运，《奔跑的火光》描写一位农村女性反抗家暴的故事。今年，这两部作品终于在英文世界出版。
