(02:24):
Welcome to adulting decrypted.
I wanted to do a quick update.
As we've been recording thesummer, we're all pretty busy
with life.
Summer's an interesting timehere at adulting decrypted
because we have Ashton who hasgraduated college, but yet
teaches in the high schoolsystem.
Gideon's a high school and isgoing into senior year.
(02:47):
And then Jean, as you guys knowis off on.
Church service mission.
Last week gideon and Sabrina andice Breanna's.
My daughter were able to go upand go camping in the high UN is
wanted to give you a briefupdate about that.
And then the one suggestion thatI'd make really strongly
encourage you to do this week asyou're getting ready to for
(03:07):
school to start next week.
So we kinda.
I kind of created like a top 10or a highlight reel of camping
and just kind of some ideasthere and that bleeds right into
what we want to do.
Basically with Ashton being.
Out of commission this weekbecause of band camp, he's
working.
Starts right around seven 30 inthe morning.
(03:29):
Make sure he's all prepped andready for the students.
And then he stays in hisprojects until about eight 30 at
night.
So he's pretty busy.
We did do some recordings inpreparation for this.
That's just how we get them all,put them back and forth to each
other and hand them off.
We didn't quite get that handoffdone with me being out of town
when they get back late from mycamping trip.
(03:49):
But so we'll do the top few,I've got five ideas here on
camping that would, should behelpful.
And then we'll go into themental side of it.
And just some ideas.
So first off, when you'replanning a trip, We were hiking
into the, into the high UNSChere in Utah to red castle lake.
Red castle lake is about.
(04:10):
The lower one's 11 miles in theupper one, they says 14 and a
half.
Kind of depends on what route.
Any obstacles you run into.
And our plan was to campingbetween them.
I asked him that about 13 miles.
Is where we wanted to camp.
The problem was we got out oftown a little bit late.
Just due to unforeseencircumstances.
(04:33):
So we start up on our, ourbackpack hike and that's number
one, when you have a plan andyou start late, the reality is
is you still can't accomplishyour goal.
Sometimes you have to stop andrest.
And part of that was, you know,we stayed up too late the night
before.
We ended up with the late start.
Because we had a familyemergency how to cook some meat
(04:56):
real fast.
Because the freezer got leftopen.
And so you have theseemergencies that come up that
you have to handle.
You can't let them go.
So we handle them, but we stillgot there and like, okay, we're
going to hike the 13 miles.
Well, what happens is it startedgetting too dark, too fast on
us.
We didn't stop and filter water.
We're like, we'll just keepgoing through, going through.
Well, long story short.
(05:19):
Yeah, it wasn't sustainable.
The pace that we try to set.
So we kind of camped on a hilland the problem with camping on
a hill.
You tend to slide to the bottomof your tent.
And so, you know, sometimes youhave to look at it and say, we
should've stopped maybe a halfhour, 45 minutes around there.
So we could have found a bettercamping spot and didn't try and
figure that out in the dark.
(05:41):
So you, so when you set a goal, you can't go the same distance
with the late start.
It just it's nearly impossible.
And that's why this episode'scoming out.
It's going to be a shorterversion.
It's going to be a highlightreel and then the.
The ideas are to give you somehighlights and some ideas to
work on.
The next one is Always if yourtent when you come in and out
(06:01):
and most of the times we'vewe've we suggest that based on
bugs, right?
You get into your tent, you wantto Zippy, you get out, you want
to unzip it.
Bugs are out of control rightnow.
Now they're not.
Like our Australian friendsflies, but there's a lot of
mosquitoes, some biting horseflies, but just a lot of bugs.
Well, we left our tenantszipped.
(06:22):
The second night, sometimeduring that day or 10 got left
on zipped, we don't keep anyfood in there because we're out
in that.
Out in the Outback.
UNSC.
And we're really worried aboutbears.
So we hang our.
Fill it up in a bear bag.
And.
We keep this away so that bearscan't get into it.
when we have it open.
(06:42):
Apparently chipmunks like to getin there.
It didn't realize that tillSabrina had laid down, as she
laid down to go to bed she'sdone all their stretches and did
all of her ready for bed, extra, you know, changed her clothes
and did all this stuff.
And literally was laying downfor bed.
When she said she heard a noiseand then looked over and was
eyeballs to eyeball with thechicken monk.
(07:04):
So she screamed.
Course I got me excited.
We're both trying to get out ofthe tent, get out of the tent.
And long story short w it tookus another 40 minutes to get a
chick muck out of the tent, andthen she couldn't fall asleep
because she was so nervous aboutit.
So we played card games andstayed up way too late and still
had not drank enough water.
(07:25):
So still not feeling great.
So make sure you zip your tent.
Can't start late.
And still apply getting theirbug spray.
It's not the only solution.
Make sure that you have sometype of net.
We had some great face andadding that we're able to keep
on Sabrina is still.
Got about.
I think she said she stoppedcounting at 70 bites.
(07:46):
I got to three or four.
But just, I guess, old men, theydon't like So bugs spring.
It's not the only answer, butit's a good help.
Just like most things in life.
Sometimes you need two forms toreally help you be protected.
Okay.
The other thing we noticed onour way out, we're hiking down
and.
There there's these rules aboutcamping 200 feet off the trail.
(08:07):
And so that's what we did.
That first night.
That's why we slept in a littlebit of a weird situation because
we knew we had to get far enoughoff the trail on our leaving.
I saw a$500 10.
Now keep in mind that my tentsright around.
$80.
Maybe, you know, cause I don'tworry about it as much.
I worry about the experiences, not about my gear.
So this is like a four or$500north face tent.
(08:29):
You know, Really nice gear.
And their camp, like two feetoff the road in the swamp.
So.
It gear doesn't always buy yousmart.
So make sure that when you'regetting ready to do these, that
you read the rules, readrecommendation, read reviews.
Kind of get a feel for whereyou're going in any guidelines I
gave you.
I would have said, make surethat you stay at a swamps and.
(08:53):
Get at least 200 Feet.
And that's not much off thetrail.
Nice gear.
Doesn't always mean somebodysmart.
Sometimes it just means theyhave money to have the year.
And then.
The last but not least.
Really don't take as manyclothes as we do.
I tend to, to over-pack, youknow, I was thinking, oh, just
one more thing.
It's going to help me.
(09:14):
A little bit better thannormally doesn't so there's a
camping advice.
Now now onto the next thing thatI wanted to visit about.
Visit with a good friend of mineand he's trying to accomplish
some big goals and he's prettyfrustrated at certain things and
kind of stressed out.
I get it.
It happens it's life.
It's adulting.
(09:34):
One of the things I, I.
I realized as he was talking, isthat there's a lot of negative.
Self-talk.
They, there are somewherebetween 40,000 to 50,000
thoughts we have in a normalhuman brain.
We have about 40,000 maybenegative thoughts everyday.
That's that's pretty sad.
(09:55):
Pretty hard to think about it.
When we're, when you're goingthrough your life.
So there's a lot of stress.
So, this is why my suggestion tothe listener this week is to go
out and get a highlight reel asyou're getting ready to go to
school.
You know, you might actuallyhear negative things.
I was thinking today I was outgolfing and I didn't really
interact with anybody.
(10:16):
And the guys that I was golfingwith it were very nice or like,
oh, good shot.
And then when I had a bad shot, they didn't say anything.
No, they weren't rude.
They only reinforce good things.
It might even brain.
Going.
Oh, I saw that was a bad shot.
I'm frustrated.
I get I'd get mad and I'm like, wait, who cares?
It's just me.
Right?
So, so how did these.
(10:38):
You know, 40,000 negativethoughts a day.
Man.
You've just got to be preparedfor that and realize that it's
okay to come up with some good, positive thoughts.
That you want to, that you wantto now plant in that brain.
And get working for you.
So as you get this highlightreel that I would recommend
everybody do and listeners makesure you get it done, Ashton,
(11:01):
get in and make sure you get itdone.
Plant these good, positivethoughts in there.
So what is the highlight reel?
Well, something like Tom Brady.
Would I use Tom Brady because.
Love him.
Hate him.
He is.
Amazing at football and he's andreally he is.
Like there's there.
(11:22):
Wasn't a great desired pick.
So if you look at Tom Brady'shighlight really has 251 wins.
He went to the pro bowl 15 timesis Superbowl MVP.
There's five of them.
He's completed 7,753.
(11:42):
Passes out of 12,000 attempts.
He has over 89,000 passingyards.
He has 649 touchdown passes.
So you look at that and you go,wow, that guy's got a lot of
positive things.
Now, the reality is, do you knowwhat?
650 or 649 passes are?
(12:04):
Passing touchdowns are nodoesn't mean much to you.
Well, only compared to.
Insert your favorite quarterbackhere?
Peyton Manning.
You know, you compare it to himor you compare it to John
McEnroe, you know, you compareit to somebody else.
That's the only way.
That it makes sense.
But the stat in and of itselfdoesn't really matter what my
(12:27):
point is.
Is that what matters to you andwhat you deem is important
should be on your highlightreel.
It should be your list.
It's not necessarily somethingthat other people are going to
love or even appreciate.
Give you a second to think aboutthat.
If I'm a high school senior, youknow, I'm looking back at my
senior year.
If I was just getting ready toget started, I would have said,
(12:50):
oh, I was able to ask.
The prettiest girl, at least shewas to meet a junior prom.
I was able to keep a job at 40hours a week.
I have.
I was able to save$2,000 for bigNew York trip, you know?
Those would have been myhighlight reels.
I would've had at least 10 ofthem that I could draw on when
(13:10):
I'm having negative thoughts.
But, but the reality is, is onthis highlight real life.
I strongly recommend that you doit every morning, sir.
Morning, wake up and you look atyour top 10 highlight reels.
And then when you get frustratedor down or sad throughout the
day, hoping up your top 10.
And guess what your friendsmight not even care.
You know, they might go.
(13:31):
All right.
Who cares that you ran an eightminute a mile?
I can run a four minute mile.
You're like, look, I'm notcomparing myself to you.
I'm just saying it was good forme.
These are good for me.
These are my top 10.
Now I look at them and it'sstuff like, man, I graduated
college and I was told I was toodumb in high school to get
there.
It might maybe took me 20 years.
But who cares?
(13:52):
I did it.
That's why it's on thathighlight reel.
I have four amazing kids.
Subjective.
I understand that, but it's myhighlight reel.
Been married to the same onewoman for 27 years.
And that's awesome.
You know, so there's all thesethings that you want to look at
on your personal highlight reelthat might not matter to anybody
(14:12):
else.
So my big challenge to you is tocreate this highlight reel.
Realize it could be physical.
It could be mental.
It could be.
I got a 4.0, or I got a C plusbecause I I'm really struggling
in math.
I met five new friends.
It doesn't matter.
It's your highlight reel.
It's not, that's not Roscoe's,it's not Gideon's it's not
(14:35):
Sabrina as it's not.
Ashton's that your highlightreel.
So when you get up in themorning, go through your
highlight reel.
I throw it in a Google doc, thatway I've got it in doc form.
And I look at it.
Be honest, I've got more than10.
Because some days I need to digdeep.
After a day, like today withgolf, I had dig deep and look at
all my other amazing places andgo.
(14:57):
I'm not tiger woods.
It doesn't matter.
I'm trying to do my best.
So.
I didn't want to let a week gowithout giving some advice and
some thoughts about how toadult.
So create your highlight reel.
Go out and camp, go out andenjoy the great outdoors into
the rest of the summer.
(15:19):
And find some quiet time andcreate yourself a highlight
reel.
If you have any thoughts.
Or questions or ideas or thingsthat you would wonder if it
should be on a highlight, putthem on there.
You know, work hard on it.
And as you create this highlightreel, please feel free to share
what's most important to you.
And what's your highlight.
(15:42):
Now go out and become apowerhouse.
