Have you ever felt an insatiable thirst that goes beyond the physical, reaching deep into the spiritual recesses of your life? As I reminisced about a day out on the water, parched and reaching for my water bottle, I couldn't help but draw parallels to the soul-quenching narrative of Jesus and the Samaritan woman at the well—a story that takes center stage in our latest discussion. Together, we examine this profound biblical encounter from John chapter 4, unpacking its relevance to our modern-day quests for fulfillment.

This episode beckons you to journey alongside the Samaritan woman, to introspect on where you've sought satisfaction and how the transformative belief in Jesus can reshape your desires. We reflect on King Solomon's candid confessions from Ecclesiastes, his pursuits for pleasure, and the futility therein, mirroring the empty ventures we often find ourselves in. The conversation is an invitation to reassess where we place our hope for true contentment, as we contemplate the living water that promises to quench our deepest spiritual longings.

Speaker 1 (00:03):
A couple days ago I found myself on the water.
It was spring break.
My family and I went out on theboat to fish and it was a hot
day.
And I realized about halfwaythrough the day that I hadn't
had anything to drink yet.
So I grabbed my yedding waterbottle and I started to drink.
And it's one of those moments Idon't know if this has ever
happened to you but the waterjust can't come fast enough.

(00:24):
I can feel my thirst actuallybeing quenched and I think about
that when I think about thisstory in John, chapter 4.
Jesus meets this woman at thewell and he's talking to her and
he uses this everydayillustration about thirst and

(00:45):
getting your thirst quenched tohelp this lady understand.
And he's first talking physicalthirst, but he's doing that in
order to help her understand thespiritual side of thirst.
And she's not reallyunderstanding to begin with, and
if you know the way Jesus talks, that's kind of understandable.
Sometimes it feels like he'stalking in riddles, but he's

(01:05):
trying to get her to a biggerpoint.
And so she kind of says how areyou going to get water from
this?
Well, you don't have a bucket.
Where is this living water thatyou're speaking of?
And Jesus decides to kind ofhone in on that question of
living water and where it comesfrom.
You know, I think about everyone of us.

(01:26):
Thirst in life, and thirst isnot just the physical thirst.
We have aspirations and thingswe long for in life, and
sometimes it's happiness,sometimes it's satisfaction.
I think of a passage inEcclesiastes where King Solomon
writes about his attempt toquench his thirst.
In chapter 2 it's talking abouthim chasing everything in life

(01:50):
the wealth, the women, thethings in life.
He's trying to find anything tosatisfy his craving.
And then in Ecclesiastes,chapter 2, verse 10 through 11,
he says all that my eyes desired.
I did not deny them.
I did not refuse myself anypleasures, for I took pleasure

(02:10):
in all my struggles.
This was my reward for all mystruggles.
When I considered all that Ihad accomplished and what I had
labored to achieve, I foundeverything to be futile and a
pursuit of the wind.
There was nothing to be gainedunder the sun.
Just like Solomon, this woman inJohn, chapter 4, is chasing

(02:33):
this out and she asks Jesuswhere can you find this living
water?
And it's probably a questionyou and I have asked in a
different way when can we findtrue satisfaction.
The truth is that's only foundin Jesus.
The problem is, a lot of times, you and I, we go through this

(02:55):
journey of saying I know what'sbest, I know how to be happy, I
just want to do things my way,and so we begin to pursue
satisfaction in something otherthan God.
And so let me ask you this, just to kind of a moment of
reflection Take a moment toreflect on your own story of

(03:15):
belief in Jesus.
Where were you seekingfulfillment, and how has belief
in Jesus satisfied and changedyour desires?
Now the follow up question thatI'll ask is where is it in your
life that you're seekingfulfillment outside of Christ
right now?
What is it that you've put onyour own plate to fix, to

(03:41):
satisfy, to bring joy andfulfillment, rather than
allowing that to come from God,praying through that and asking
God to reveal that in your lifeand then give you the strength
to overcome?
