Newly promoted Professor of Communication Studies, Dr. Thomas Corrigan discusses his research and teaching which examines the relationship between wealth, power, and the media. This area of Communication Studies is also known as the Political Economy of Communication (PEC). He shares the focus of two of his Fall 2023 courses which are Digital Media and Society and the Political Economy of Communication.

His research specifically focuses on the business of sports media, the news ecosystem in California's Inland Empire, the 'hope labor' of digital creatives and interns, and critical realist epistemology and methodology. His work has been published in peer reviewed journals, such as International Journal of Communication, The Political Economy of Communication, and tripleC: Communication, Capitalism & Critique, and his 'Hope Labor' concept (coined w/ Dr. Kathleen Kuehn) has been discussed in Fortune magazine. His research is cataloged on Google Scholar and on Academia.edu. He is also a steering committee member for the Union for Democratic Communications.

Dr. Corrigan – or T.C. – also talks about this family’s love of outdoor activities, what tamales mean to him and what he hopes his students take with them after spending time in one of his courses.
