Join us in discussing this month’s book club pick Schrader’s Chord by Scott Leed.

Charlie’s dad shouldn’t be dead. He’s not the type of man to commit suicide. But there’s a text from Charlie’s sisters that has him boarding a plane to deal with the aftermath back home in Seattle. The man with the magic ear, Charlie had a falling out with his father years earlier. Since then, they haven’t spoken and Charlie has tried to forget what happened. So when his father’s will entrusts him with his father’s record store and a black case with a note that says they’re real, Charlie is ready to have a good laugh and go back home. Ana, who’s worked for Charlie’s dad for years, convinces him to play the records inside the case. Records that are fabled to be made by the Ivan Schrader, the man rumored to have found the chord that will open the gates of hell. Wrangling the help of Ellie, Charlie’s twin sister, and Dale, the other employee at the record store, they simultaneously play all four records. At first, things are fine. There’s nothing strange happening. But then the dead start to appear leading the four of them down a dark path that shows them how Charlie’s dad really died.

CJ and Kait make a compelling argument that Leed is the new Grady Hendrix, why the ending did work, and a myriad of writing tips.

For our next book, we’ll be reading Murder Road by Simone St. James.
