Speaker 1 (00:03):
Welcome to the show.
Today I'm talking about how youlive your life is how your
world shows up for you, and I'mcoming again from Tulum, mexico,
where I'm recording this, andit's been a really interesting
experience in Tulum.
So basically what?
Today I'm going to be sharingsome of the experience I've had
(00:25):
while being in Tulum.
They're kind of going with thetheme of how you live your life
is how your world shows up,because things have not been
easy yet the way I've beendealing with it.
Things have been going prettywell, pretty easy for me,
(00:46):
whereas basically where I'mstaying here in Tulum was that I
got connected through a greatcoaching friend of mine to
somebody who lives here in Tulumand I'm basically staying at
the same place where she livesand she's been going through
some of the similar things I'vebeen going through and has not
been having a great time and I'mstill relatively having a great
(01:07):
time.
So we'll get into that.
We'll get into what I've been upto, including cenote diving and
the challenges of maybe notexactly knowing where you're
going to be showing up when youget to a new part of the world
and how that is and how it'sdifferent and challenges that
can come up and how to roll withthat so that you can have the
(01:27):
world that you want to be livingin, and that really has to do
with how you live your life.
Often we think, well, when theworld is peaceful, when the
world has things figured out, when the world's given me what I
want, when things go my way, then I can be happy, I can be
peaceful, I can be kind, allthese things and it's complete
(01:54):
bullshit.
It's just not how it works.
At least I've found it doesn'twork that way.
I've spent, you know, majorityof my life expecting it to work
that way.
I eventually gave up anddecided to completely flip it,
and that's what I'm going to beoffering to you is to completely
flip how you look at your lifeand your world.
(02:14):
So, but first let's talk aboutsome fun stuff.
So I'm here in Tulum, and Tulumhas one of the largest networks
of cenotes, which are theseunderwater freshwater sort of
cave systems.
There are all kind of likeunderground rivers, water
reservoirs, and I've been toTulum technically before about a
(02:39):
year and a half no, not even atlike nine months ago for a
retreat, and it had a cenote inthe property and it was just,
you know, beautiful.
It was small though, because Imean it's part of a part of a
retreat center.
I did get a chance to go visitone and swim.
This time I was I don't know.
I was called to do some scubadiving.
(03:01):
So you probably heard me talkabout scuba diving.
If you're following my socialmedia Justin Wink PhD, on
Facebook, instagram, tiktok, linkedin and you've probably
been seeing some of thesepictures of me scuba diving,
even some video possibly.
So I was like you know, I thinkI'd like to do some scuba
(03:24):
diving in a cenote See whatthat's all about.
And cenote scuba diving is kindof serious.
So it did require that I havemy advanced open water
certification, which I have,because it's technically.
You're doing cavern diving, notcave diving, and you might be
(03:45):
going.
Well, justin, what's thedifference?
I now know, so I can tell you.
Cavern diving is defined asyou're within 200 feet of being
able to pop up to fresh air, and200 feet, that's what is.
What is that?
That's like 60, 60 meters, 70meters for those of you
(04:07):
listening worldwide, which isapproximately 100 feet, 70
meters.
It is Pretty far.
It's pretty far.
It's not super close, especially when I got to
experience a firsthand where I'mthere and I look up and it's
just cave wall and I'm like, ifI am within 200 feet of fresh
(04:27):
air, I actually don't know whichdirection that is.
So I'm going to trust myequipment, trust the guide I'm
with.
So, you know, knowing that, knowing your equipment, being
able to be calm, comfortable, isall part of having the advanced
open water certification and itis so worth it because just the
experience was phenomenal.
So the right for two things.
(04:49):
The one one was really cool was,I know, barbenheimer.
You know the Barbie movie openHeimer's been a really big thing
.
I haven't had a chance to seeopen Heimer, but I did get a
chance to see Barbie While I wasdoing my scuba diving.
There's a one of the littlepaths because one of the things
(05:10):
they do is they create theselines where they literally tie a
yellow line that is like sortof a safe path where you're not
going to disturb because there'sstalactites, stalagmites and
maybe little dangerous areas.
So they have these lines andone of the lines is called the
Barbie line and the reason isthere should be a picture of
this, probably somewhere in mysocial media.
(05:31):
They have a Barbie doll on that, the midpoint of the line, and
apparently it's been there foryears and years and years.
This isn't something specialjust for the Barbie movie,
although they did dress it up,especially if they put in a nice
dress to rock the red carpetunderwater.
So I did get to see Barbie, although not the movie.
(05:54):
So that was fun.
What was my favorite part wasthe dive into the deepest cenote
I got to go down into, which iscalled the El Pit, which, if
you're not familiar with Spanish, el means the pit is pit, so El
Pit is the pit, and the pitgoes at least over 100 feet deep
(06:17):
, which is over 33 meters, andthe deepest that we're allowed
to go is the.
I think they said the 90 footmark, but we went to 99 feet.
And what's really cool is youget to go through these various
layers.
So the first layer, which isabout 30 feet, is this halo
Klein layer, which is where thesaltwater and the freshwater
(06:37):
layers start to meet and combine, and it creates this very
blurry effect where it's like ismy goggles, do I have the wrong
?
Did I put somebody's wrongprescription goggles on?
And it's just really trippybecause you're just like I can't
see, things are blurry.
And so that's the first layerwhere it's like, okay, this is
(06:58):
like entering another world.
And then the next layer is atabout the 90 foot point.
It's this hydrogen sulfidelayer which sounds scary, that
it's just the and remember scubadiving, so have my own air
supply, so I don't have to worryabout breathing this in,
because I'm breathing the airthat I brought on the tank with
me.
And what's really cool is thishydrogen sulfide gas which is
(07:22):
being released by bacteria whichare composing, composing,
they're consuming.
Oh, it's almost like in thespirit of that, I just caught a
whiff of something.
It smells like hydrogen.
Yeah, yeah, there's a.
I'm in an interesting locationwhich I'm about to get, which
(07:42):
I'll get into after this note astory.
So the Pirate of Sulphide.
It looks like fog, it's, it'slike a foggy layer, and what
makes it even more fascinatingis that the Mayans Considered to
note a sort of the gateway tothe underworld.
And so, with this fog andseeing there's, like you know,
decomposing materials, and itjust has this stillness, this
(08:06):
quiet, this dead, like it reallydoes feel like the gateway to
the underworld.
And To see the formations ofthe slag ties, the slag mites,
and just thinking about thehistory, geologically and
culturally, of of these placeswhere, as at one point, for
these rock formations, thatmeant that these were not filled
(08:27):
in with water at one point.
So these were, you know, emptycaves and then at some point
they became filled in.
And Also in El Pit there wassome, some like Mayan pottery
that was there.
My guide said she's not ahundred percent sure if that's
authentic or maybe it could havebeen placed there, but she
(08:47):
knows that there definitely arelocations where there is
authentic.
And so there's a little bit of,because I believe it is well
known that there were Mayansthat you know were phenomenal
with Diving into the cenoteswith great breath control that
could, you know, go very deepand very long.
Yet there's also hey, maybe atone point, when these weren't
(09:08):
filled in, you know where thereare people using these caves,
doing things, and so to me Ijust find this all fascinating,
all of these things, and it'sjust still gorgeous.
So if you've ever been likethinking of doing cenotes, scuba
diving or just scuba diving ingeneral, I would, I would
recommend it.
It's almost a very good forcedmeditation, because you're
(09:29):
required to stay calm, monitoryour breath, because if you, if
not, you're gonna go through allof your air and you have less
time to dive.
So that brings me to where I'mstaying, which is gonna lead
into the point of this episode.
So now I'm gonna be talkingabout what it's been like in the
(09:50):
location where I'm staying, inTulum.
I'm at this place, I'm gonna saythat's this Ophelia Tulum hotel
and yeah, I was connected withsomebody's like yeah, this is
where I'm living.
It's great.
They've got co-working spaces,phenomenal pool, great internet.
It's like gorgeous, it'sbeautiful, I love it.
Ah, and I'm just gettingrefreshing because I Believe,
(10:14):
thanks to all the noisecancellation that gets done with
how I record this and my greatediting team, you probably
weren't hearing any noise, butthere was an air compressor just
going like crazy, like mad, andit just clicked off.
So it feels so good to havethat a little bit more peace, a
little bit more quiet and it'sit's hot here once again.
(10:34):
And so I really got themarketing spiel you know from
the website, from the bookingplace, from my you know, new,
new friend.
Yet when I, when I get here,it's a completely different
experience.
(10:54):
For one thing, when driving up,you know, leave the paved road
and go into dirt road and it'slike this is looking like kind
of like ramshackle type lighttype housing, where it's just
like slapped together you knowrough concrete, using any sort
of materials.
I'm just like what?
(11:15):
I thought I'm going to a luxury, luxury condo hotel area,
what's what's this?
And then, yep, roll up there itis.
So it's basically thismanufactured luxury site in the
middle of you know probablywhat's been you know for for
decades, just where people whohave been able to get land
(11:35):
Grattered piece of land, builtsome stuff on it, been living,
doing their life.
And I'm like, whoa it's?
And the guy checks me in andit's like, yeah, you're probably
not gonna want to.
You know, walk around at night, during the day, you're fine.
And oh, yeah, by the way, there's power outages and the
power was actually out rightwhen I checked in.
It went on five minutes laterand Then a couple days later,
(11:58):
there's another power outage andmy friends like, yeah, this is
it.
She kind of a.
Okay, I think I'm back, I'mgoing to keep going and hope
that I have a loss of internet, which means the recording
stopped.
But it came back and it saysthis recording.
(12:19):
This could be an interestingepisode.
We'll see how it turns out.
So, yeah, it's in an area whereI'm like, oh, I haven't been in
an area like this and told notto walk at night, and it takes
at least 10 to 15 minutes towalk to anywhere for coffee,
food, groceries, that type ofthing, power outages, and it's
(12:45):
like this is just not exactlywhat I was expecting.
Yeah, I'm like what's thebenefit?
How do I want to live my life?
So now it's time to talk abouthow do I want to live my life.
Okay, I just lost it again.
(13:18):
So we're back.
So we'll see how this editstogether.
If it does together, I mighthave to just rerecord this whole
episode at a time, which wouldbe fine.
So yeah.
So actually my power is outright now.
I found out last night it wassupposed to be out for a few
hours.
Then this morning it goes outhalf hour before I was told, and
(13:38):
then find out it's actuallysupposed to be out the entire
day.
And my friend, her power wasout all of yesterday and it's
also still out today and she'sfurious, understandably so,
because she's got work to dowhere she needs the internet and
then probably has food andthings like that and a
(14:00):
refrigerator, and so veryfrustrated, very annoyed, and
she's been having issues andshe's been living here, I'm new,
I don't know, and she's wentand had to go get another place
already, just as she worked andshe's looking to move out ASAP
and totally understandable.
And with a lot of this I'vebeen.
(14:23):
Yeah, how do I want to be?
Do I want to be like, afraidthat this is going to harm me,
that walking around?
Do I want to be afraid that I'mgoing to get hurt?
Do I want to get frustrated?
Do I want to be an angerannoyance with having to walk
around long distances?
Or do I want to be in a stateof peace, a state of joy, a
(14:48):
state of ease?
And I try to choose that moreand more often and as I do that
what becomes available to meshifts.
So it's sort of like, well, maybe there is something close
by to be able to eat, and itturns out.
Just not even a half a blockaway there's a little restaurant
(15:09):
.
It looks like it's in a shackand it's one of those.
I walk up and I'm like, is thisplace even open?
And I go, hola, stas abierto, which I think is this open.
And then this beautiful grandmaabuelita looking.
One goes, oh, yes, yes, googleMaps, and I pull it up and then
(15:32):
she's start showing me okay, Ihave carne asada, I've got
quesadilla, I got tacos, andjust delicious food, just the
sweetest service and low price.
And it's like okay, so this islike an experience I would not
have had if I was not here.
And then just getting to thatexperience, walking around,
(15:53):
seeing people living in adifferent way that I'm usually
not used to, and realizing theseare just people living that
life in a different way, justdoing their thing, and I can be
doing my thing and I don't haveto be afraid that something bad
is going to be happening justbecause the roads are made of
dirt and they don't have.
Things are up to US code.
And when it comes to the poweroutages, there's a little bit of
(16:16):
like okay, is this going toaffect my work?
I don't have to allow it.
I can be confident that I'llfind a way to get done what's
needed to get done and then beopen to well, maybe I can find
different ways to do things likeoh, maybe this is a good time
to do my Qigong or this is agood time to record my podcast,
(16:36):
and recognizing that, oh, maybethis makes me go out of my room
and be in the common area whereI've been able to interact with
people and meet some people Iotherwise wouldn't have.
Just the internet was great.
And you know, there's somethings where it's like it's
really hot and I'm sweating, soI'd probably what look?
Look like I'm just coming outof a sauna or steam room or
(16:59):
something like that.
Yeah, no-transcript, I'mfeeling calm, I'm feeling at
peace, I'm feeling at ease andI'm able to see that in the
world I'm not buying into, theworld's not working out for me
that then I don't get to befeeling the way I want to feel.
I'm flipping it on its head.
(17:21):
Where I'm starting with, how doI want to feel?
What kind of experience do Iwant to create?
And then it's amazing thatthese things show up that allow
me to get done what's importantto me, because, again, the
previous episode was aboutvision and commitment.
So I'm committed to doing thispodcast, because I want to get
messages like these to those ofyou that listen and watch the
(17:42):
snippets or the videos.
So I'm committed to that.
I'm going to find a way, and sothat's why, yeah, this was not
the planned time I was going torecord this, but, again, I don't
have internet in my room.
I've got internet out in thiscommon area, which is where I
would have recorded it anyway.
So I'm doing it.
I'm doing it happen andenjoying it and I'm looking
(18:02):
forward to like, okay, let me gofind some other places to eat
to try the food, or there's acouple places I've been that
have been great.
May I return back and trysomething else?
And so just really getting toenjoy the experience.
It's different than if I wouldhave just gone with what I
thought was the way it should be.
You know how I think the worldshould show up for me to be able
(18:23):
to enjoy things.
But when I start with, how do Iwant to feel, how do I want to
live my life, what's the statethat I want to be in?
And then I start to see allthese opportunities showing up.
So my question to you is how'syour world showing up to you
currently?
Like what are you noticing?
Like is the world?
Is it a bunch of fear?
(18:43):
Is a lot of things not doingwhat they supposed to, which is
what I'd say is obligation, oris there things that are not
right, things that are wrong, shameful, full of guilt?
So again, is your world filledwith fog, your obligation, guilt
, and if it is, I'd go.
(19:03):
You know, look internally likehow are you living your life?
You're probably living it basedoff of motivated by fear,
obligation and guilt, and that'swhy it's showing up in your
world.
How can you flip that aroundand start loving yourself,
finding ways to go through lifewith ease and then finding the
joy in this very moment, rightnow and again?
(19:26):
It might take a little bitlonger than it's comfortable.
For that you have to startshowing up in your external
world, but it's going to be.
It might be subtle, it might besmall, but if you're paying
attention it'll start showing up, and the more you're consistent
with that, the bigger and thelonger it's going to sustain out
in the world, regardless ofwhat might be supposedly really
(19:46):
going on really going on, yeah,so regardless of what's really
going on.
What's really going on is howyou feel about it, because
(20:07):
really kind of what matters isthe experiences, the emotions,
the feelings.
And with that I'm going to wrapthis episode up before I lose my
connection and my ability torecord again, which I think is
just another demonstration of Icould be getting frustrated, I
could be getting annoyed, yetwhen it goes out and I have to
take a pause in the recording.
I just use that as a time torelax and enjoy and be ready for
(20:32):
when it's time, and so ifyou're looking for ways of how
you can, so I'd highly recommendmy book Engineered to Love
(20:54):
