Losing weight is a common goal, but what happens when we lose muscle in the process?

When losing weight, what we want to happen is that we lose weight from fats. However, at some point, we also go through some muscle loss in the process. That can be so frustrating, and even discouraging, more so with the tons of fad diets circulating online.

  1. All weight loss strategies result in some loss of muscle, and the more weight one loses, the more muscle is lost as a percentage of that weight loss. This can lead to a lower metabolism
  2. The diet consumed while losing weight plays a significant role in the degree of muscle loss. Studies have shown that a low-protein diet is not ideal for maintaining muscle mass during weight loss
  3. Exercise during weight loss is crucial for preventing muscle loss and promoting targeted weight loss from fat. Even modest amounts of low-intensity physical activity can be beneficial. It is advised to avoid fad diets that may cause more harm than good.
