Sara Rotter's path into real estate started with an unexpected turn while completing her pre-med studies at Harvard, a chance run-in with her property manager during a rental mix-up sparked a curiosity about the industry that she couldn't shake. She followed that curiosity and never looked back. Today, Sara is Senior Executive Vice President and Managing Director of Sales Downtown at Brown Harris Stevens, one of New York's most storied luxury real estate firms, founded in 1873. With over 25 years in the industry, Sara co-leads the Union Square and SoHo offices, overseeing around 200 agents within a company that manages roughly 400 buildings across New York City.
Joined by Kylie Walsh, Sara opens up about the leadership lesson that changed everything for her: energy management. After hitting a wall from years of saying yes to everyone, Sara learned to set boundaries, protect her time, and lead from a place of sustainability rather than burnout. She shares her philosophy on building confident problem-solvers rather than handing out answers, her go-to method for delivering hard feedback with care, and the guiding principles: grace, generosity, and doing right by others that shape how she leads her team and shows up in every negotiation.
It's a conversation about what it really means to lead with intention, energy, and heart so what would change in your business if you led with energy first, and everything else second?
