John the Evangelist, John of Patmos, John the Elder, and the Beloved Disciple, as he is variously known, is believed to have outlived the remaining apostles and avoided martyrdom. The key event that propelled John into his seemingly eternal existence is said to have occurred during the reign of Roman Emperor Domitian. In a display of imperial might, Domitian ordered his men to cast John into a boiling cauldron of oil, intending to execute him publicly.
