Have you ever noticed yourself sabotaging a peaceful moment or pulling away when things feel too good? Your nervous system might be hitting what I call a "joy threshold" โ€“ that point where feeling good becomes uncomfortable, even threatening.

This deeply personal exploration unpacks why so many of us, especially those who've experienced trauma or lived in survival mode, find joy suspicious and unsafe. When your body has been wired to anticipate danger, the softening that joy requires can trigger all kinds of protective responses. You might start arguments, return to old habits, or simply numb outโ€”not because you're failing, but because your system is saying, "this unfamiliar feeling might not be safe."

Through gentle, body-based approaches, we explore practical ways to expand your capacity for joy. The guided mindfulness practice invites you to notice what happens when you allow good feelings to stay a little longer without bracing for their disappearance. We examine powerful reflection prompts that help identify your patterns around joy, including the stories your body tells about whether happiness can be trusted. This episode offers liberation from the belief that withholding joy somehow protects you from disappointment.

The work of emotional sobriety isn't just about managing difficult feelingsโ€”it's equally about learning to stay present with good ones. If you find yourself walking the tender line between deep self-awareness and the longing to actually enjoy your life again, this episode provides both validation and a pathway forward. You are allowed to feel good, not because you've earned it through suffering, but simply because you exist. Learn more www.liftoneself.com

Speaker 1 (00:00):
What if the hardest emotion to feel wasn't grief,
fear or anger, but joy, the kindof joy that feels too good to
trust, the kind that shows upand your whole body braces for
it to disappear?
If you've ever caught yourselfshrinking from goodness, if

(00:20):
you've ever sabotaged peacebecause it felt too unfamiliar,
this episode is for you.
Welcome to the Lift One Selfpodcast.
I'm your host, nat Nat.

(00:41):
In here we break mental healthstigmas through grounded
conversations that meet youright where you are.
We explore trauma, the nervoussystem and emotional sobriety
not as buzzwords, but as reallived experiences.
If this resonates, please like, share, subscribe and or leave a

(01:02):
Your presence matters and yourhealing is not too much.
Let's get into it.
Let's be real.
Joy is something we all say wewant, but when it actually shows
up, for many of us it feelsuncomfortable, suspicious, even
unsafe, and that's what we'reexploring today.

(01:24):
Vicious, even unsafe, andthat's what we're exploring
today.
The fear of joy.
I know that might sound strange, because why would we fear
something that feels good?
But for so many of us,especially those who have lived
in survival mode or who've beenthrough trauma, joy can feel
unfamiliar, even unsafe.

(01:44):
Real joy, not performance, notforced positivity asks us to
soften.
It asks us to drop the armor,to stop anticipating threat, to
feel something good and stay.
We don't talk enough about howhard it is to feel good when

(02:04):
your body is wired for survival.
You might notice yourselffeeling amazing and then
suddenly starting a fight orzoning out or self-sabotaging
with old habits.
That's not failure.
That's your system, saying this, is unfamiliar.
Are we safe here?
This is what I call a joythreshold, and most people have

(02:30):
one.
It's the point where yoursystem goes okay, that's enough
good, don't get used to it.
And when we hit that threshold,we pull away, we create drama,
we distract, we numb out, wetell ourselves this is too good
to be true.
But here's the truthWithholding joy doesn't protect

(02:58):
you.
It just robs you of the sacredmoments you could be living in
your body.
Joy isn't a reward for hard work.
It's a practice of safety.
So let's try something together.
Join me in a mindful moment.
Right now, I'm going to ask youto place a hand over your heart
and one on your belly and askwhat would it feel like to let

(03:23):
joy stay a little longer?
If discomfort arises, let thatbe information, not a problem.
You don't have to force joy,you just have to stop running
from it when it comes.
Stay with yourself right now, breathe in and out, let there be

(03:51):
some space in your body andyour muscles, let yourself drop
into the ease of your breath.
This is exactly the kind of workwe explore in emotional
sobriety workshops Building thecapacity to feel safe in joy,

(04:16):
not just survive pain.
It's gentle, it's body-basedand it's for this kind of moment
when you realize joy can feelas tender as grief.
And if you're someone who'sbeen walking that tender line
between deep self-awareness andthe longing to actually live in

(04:40):
your life again, I see you.
In your life again, I see you.
And while you're still holdingyourself and breathing, here are
a few reflection prompts I wantto leave with you.
What story does my body tell meabout joy?
Can it be trusted?

(05:03):
Where do I cut off goodnessbefore it can fully land?
Am I willing to let joy be apart of my healing, not just my
reward?
This isn't about chasing a high.
It's about learning to hold joywithout apology, to stay soft

(05:30):
without feeling exposed, toreceive the moment without
waiting for it to vanish.
Thank you for being here.
Thank you for doing the tender, quiet work of returning to
yourself, and thank you forletting this space hold you.
Through it, you are allowed tofeel good.
You are allowed to be safe inyour body, you are allowed to

(05:52):
heal, not because you've earnedit, but because you exist.
And, as always, remember to bekind to yourself.
Ps.
If this episode stirredsomething in you, the Emotional
Sobriety Workshop might be thenext right space to explore it
deeper.

(06:13):
You don't have to do it alone.
This is Nat.
