Jesus made himself our perfect neighbor despite our never having deserved his love or mercy. And he continues to be a perfect neighbor to us. He isn’t hard to find. He’s never far away, but remains close to us at all times, protecting us with his mighty power. He comes to us in Word and Sacrament, forgives our sins, binds our wounds, and gives us life. With this new life from Jesus we want to love our neighbor. These days people often virtue-signal with an easy and false love for people who aren’t really their neighbor at all. But what we learn from Jesus is a real and self-sacrificing love for the people around us that he’s brought into our lives.
