Cardiologist Dr. Koren joins Kevin Geddings to talk about the importance of understanding what we know about patients. The cardiologist recounts a recently recorded podcast where he - with full consent - reviewed the cardiovascular infomation of a patient to give a broader understanding of what all of the numbers mean and how they can give doctors and patients insight into what's going on. Dr. Koren then makes an offer to do this for other patients to help illuminate other medical areas with experts in those fields - right here on MedEvidence!

Announcer (00:00):
Welcome to the MedEvidence! Monday Minutes
Radio Show, sponsored by KevinGeddings
WSOS St. Augustine Radio andPowered by ENCORE Research
Group.
Monday morning, Dr.
Michael Koren calls in with thelatest medical
updates with insightful discussions.
Med Evidence! iswhere we help you navigate the real truth behind medical research from both a clinical and research perspective.
So sit back, relax, and getready to learn about the truth

(00:24):
behind the data medicine andhealthcare. This is MedEvidence!

Kevin Geddings (00:31):
Joining us live on the Monday morning, Dr.
Michael Koren, medical doctor,cardiologist, research
scientist, and a big friend ofWSOS.
We appreciate him and ourrelationship with him very, very
much.
You can learn more by going toEncoreDocs.com.
They have offices right here inSt.
John's County at UF FlaglerHospital or next door to UF
Flagler Hospital.
We're going to talk to youabout medevidence.com in just a

(00:53):
moment.
But Dr.
Koren mentioned that we mighthave a special offer for WSOS
listeners.
That'll get their attention,Dr.
Koren.
What what do you have in mind?

Dr. Michael Koren (01:02):
Absolutely.
So, Kevin, I'm going to makeyou and your listeners an offer
you just cannot refuse.

Kevin Geddings (01:10):
Not Corleone, but uh Koreona.

Dr. Michael Koren (01:12):
Going back to my days growing up on Staten
Island.

Kevin Geddings (01:15):
Yeah, an offer we can't refuse.

Dr. Michael Koren (01:19):
So so um we've done podcasts with
patients before on MedEvidence! And recently I did one where I
broke down the cholesterol andlipid results for a patient.
And what we did is we looked atall the details of their
cholesterol profile and reallyexplained to the person what
everything meant in a moredetailed way than you would get

(01:42):
in an exam room.
And then we actually plotted acourse for that patient showing
um you know the patient's inputinto all this and also the
expert opinion on how the whatthe course would look like.
And uh what I'm willing to doas a special offer for WSOS
listeners is to give you anopportunity to be part of such a

(02:04):
podcast.
Now it's not just me, we havemultiple experts.
We have uh great experts indermatology, in diabetes, in
weight loss, in orthopedics, uh,in neurology, just down the
line, a lot of things we can do.
But, you know, for example, ifyou have a difficult time with
migraine headaches and you wantan expert to look at your

(02:24):
records and then project that toother people that of view
MedEvidence, we're willing to dothat.
And this of course will be donefree of charge, uh, but we do
expect the patients to agree torelease the information and and
allow people to share theirexperience.
It could be in dermatology.
Uh, we have uh Dr.
Mike Bernhardt who is anamazing uh clinical

(02:44):
dermatologist and a greatresearcher, and he's working on
projects in acne andhidradenitis suppurativa, which
is uh acne on steroids, if youwill.
And uh, you know, on and on andon, literally in many, many
different areas we have experts.
Maybe not in every area, but inmost areas we can probably do
that.
And again, uh if you call andshow your interest, we're not

(03:05):
gonna guarantee we're gonna getyou on because there's a number
of issues that go into makingthe decision.
But if you have a case that'sillustrative of how doctors
think and ultimately how we getto solutions, we would love to
get you on.
And uh we'll put WSOS listenerson the top of the queue.

Kevin Geddings (03:23):
Wow, front of the line, right?
VIP status.

Dr. Michael Koren (03:27):
There you go.

Kevin Geddings (03:28):
Yeah.
So this could be folks drivingaround listening to us right now
who have a whole host ofdifferent issues, right?
Or is it just tied to they havesome concern about cholesterol?

Dr. Michael Koren (03:37):
No, no, uh, it's definitely not limited to
cholesterol.
In fact, we just we just did apodcast on that, so we'd
probably want to do somethingelse.
But whatever your healthproblem is, uh we'll look at it.
And um, if it's if it's a casethat we like, sort of like the
people's court, uh, you submityour case.
Doesn't mean that we're gonnado every case, but if it's a
case that has some interest,we'll provide very, very high

(04:00):
level medical expertise at nocharge.
And all you uh consent to is tobe viewed, just like the
people's court.

Kevin Geddings (04:07):
Very cool.
No, and then of course, theresults of that are good
information that not only youwill benefit from as the as the
patient, the participant, butalso a lot of other folks who
are out there who, you know, maynot be doing much to find out
more about their particularhealth condition, right?
They're gonna get someeducation.

Dr. Michael Koren (04:23):
Absolutely.
Yeah, absolutely.
And this gets into really a keyissue, which is you know, in
medicine, there are things thatwe know very well.
In medicine, there's thingsthat we know that we don't know.
And um, there's a process tolearn about the things that you
don't know.
And there's there's two levelsto that process, by the way,
Kevin.
One is to do tests.
When you go to a doctor'soffice, they'll order tests to

(04:44):
figure out the stuff they don'tknow about you.
But there's also the clinicaltrial world where we find out
what we don't know about you andothers just like you.

Kevin Geddings (04:52):
Yeah.

Dr. Michael Koren (04:53):
So uh it's a great way for people to
understand one, what we know foryour immediate benefit, and
two, how you can help be part ofthe solution for others.

Kevin Geddings (05:02):
Yeah.
Give us just a quick rundown ofsome, you know, some health
issues, uh whether they'rechronic conditions or otherwise,
that people are dealing withthat you think would be a really
good fit.
I mean, I know it's a prettywide list, but people are
driving around, sure, you know, kind of give them a sense of if
you're dealing with blank, giveus a call.

Dr. Michael Koren (05:19):
Yeah, so I mentioned the skin conditions.
So that's that's a greatexample.
A lot of people, particularlyyoung people, may have bad skin
conditions and they're they'renervous about going out in
public, and they may have gottena little bit of help, but maybe
not extensive help.
And and it it's rare that adoctor who's an expert at this
would break it down for you.

(05:40):
So mention this conditioncalled hidradenitis suppurativa,
which is a really bad form ofacne, if you will.
And there are now solutionsthat are being proposed for this
that were not previouslyavailable.
So, you know, again, a skincondition where you get an
expert dermatologist look at youand describe what he or she is
seeing, and then break it downfor you about what next steps

(06:01):
look like would be an example.
Um, another example would bethe migraine headache space.
Another example would bememory.
There's all always concernsabout, oh, you know, I'm in my
fifties, I have a family historyof Alzheimer's, and I'm not
remembering things quite as wellas I used to.
Should I be worried about that?
So that's a a common problem,and there's a lot of

(06:23):
information, of course, on theweb about that, but I don't know
if you're gonna find an expertin that condition actually
interviewing a patient anddetermining whether or not it's
not really anything to beworried about, it's pretty topic
or those types of issues, orhuh, maybe we need to take this
next step, maybe we need to geta scan of your brain or some lab
tests.
Uh so you know, these are justsome examples, but uh it's true

(06:47):
for diabetes, it's true forweight loss, it's true for
orthopedic issues, and a lot ofliterally we touch a lot of
different areas.

Kevin Geddings (06:55):
Wow.
Yeah, but a cool opportunity.
So, yes, if you're someone outthere, yeah, perhaps you're
dealing with some sort of achronic health condition that
you've been struggling with, youdon't have any satisfactory
answers.
We would encourage you to youknow take Dr.
Koren up on his offer.
You can start the process bycalling this number for
ENCORE Research Group here inSt.
Augustine and work with them.
I have done that.
Karen on our team has as well.

(07:15):
We highly recommend workingwith them.
It's gonna be a positive, great, fun experience for you.
904-730-0166 is the localnumber.
904-730-0166.
And of course, the website,encoredocs.com, that's spelled
E-N-C-O-R-E, Encore Docs.com.

(07:36):
It's gonna be a lot of fun.
We'll see how people react toit.
Uh, doc, before we let you go,talk to us about Medevidence.com
as we uh mentioned, MedEvidenceis our platform where we get to
the truth behind the data.
And uh it it's interesting.
Um I was watching uh Peter Atiabeing interviewed on I guess it

(07:58):
was 60 minutes last night.
I didn't get into all thedetails, but um very charismatic
guy, a very influential guy,and uh a guy that will not
necessarily give you all of thedata from clinical trials.
So it's more taking little bitsand pieces of basic science and

(08:19):
trying to make a story out ofthat.
So and that's not bad, I'm notcriticizing that, but there are
different levels of evidencethat drive doctor
recommendations, and uh it it itbrings up very, very
interesting issues about whatyou believe.
Uh and you know we don't chargefor anything, we're not
promoting any uh fancy weightloss program, or we're not

(08:43):
claiming you're gonna live tenyears longer if you try this the
other supplement, but we justwant you to become
knowledgeable.
So that's uh the differencebetween us and maybe other
people out there that arepromoting certain products or
books or your specific specificremedies that they have a
financial interest in.
Yeah, no, absolutely.
Well, once again, uh just amuch better resource than

(09:04):
Googling or relying on someinfluencer on Instagram or
TikTok or Snapchat.
Highly recommend looking up anduh learning more about
medevidence.com.
It's not going to cost youanything.
It's a bunch of greatinformation, reliable
information.
It's free of charge.
Medevidence.com, the truthbehind the data.
That's medevidence.com.
Dr.

(09:25):
Michael Koren, thank you asalways for all your time.
We appreciate you.
Be safe out there, okay?
You too.
My pleasure.
Bye-bye.

Stuff You Should Know
Ruthie's Table 4

Ruthie's Table 4

For more than 30 years The River Cafe in London, has been the home-from-home of artists, architects, designers, actors, collectors, writers, activists, and politicians. Michael Caine, Glenn Close, JJ Abrams, Steve McQueen, Victoria and David Beckham, and Lily Allen, are just some of the people who love to call The River Cafe home. On River Cafe Table 4, Rogers sits down with her customers—who have become friends—to talk about food memories. Table 4 explores how food impacts every aspect of our lives. “Foods is politics, food is cultural, food is how you express love, food is about your heritage, it defines who you and who you want to be,” says Rogers. Each week, Rogers invites her guest to reminisce about family suppers and first dates, what they cook, how they eat when performing, the restaurants they choose, and what food they seek when they need comfort. And to punctuate each episode of Table 4, guests such as Ralph Fiennes, Emily Blunt, and Alfonso Cuarón, read their favourite recipe from one of the best-selling River Cafe cookbooks. Table 4 itself, is situated near The River Cafe’s open kitchen, close to the bright pink wood-fired oven and next to the glossy yellow pass, where Ruthie oversees the restaurant. You are invited to take a seat at this intimate table and join the conversation.
