Welcome to another episode of Mental Health Multiverse: A podcast where we mindfully break down your pop culture favs and discuss them through the lens of self care, mental health, and personal development.

This week on MHM we are joined by a special guest to discuss the Disney/Pixar movies FINDING NEMO & DORY!

HB, LB, and Jenny discuss how 'Finding Nemo' and 'Finding Dory' address the stigma around mental health and disability, while also emphasizing the importance of self-healing, self-discovery, and empowerment through characters like Marlin, Nemo, and Dory.

Questions, themes, and topics we touch on include:

  • Disability rights
  • Trust
  • Community
  • Genuine kindness
  • Overcoming self-doubt
  • Perceiving others & oneself
  • Post-traumatic growth

And more!

“Hi friends! My name is Jenny, I’m 32 and live in the San Francisco Bay Area with my partner and pup. Some fun facts: I love coffee, my favorite place is Monterey, CA, and I’ve spent eight years of my professional life working in academic libraries.

I’m a big fan of Disney/Pixar, and an even bigger fan of disability rights and raising mental health awareness. I feel these topics are often misunderstood and stigmatized which only perpetuates the cycle of isolation and harm. I love that MHM is utilizing something many of us love (movies) to discuss a variety of topics that many of us may find difficult to talk about.

Thanks for having me and I can’t wait to dive into this movie with you all!” - Jenny S.

You can follow Jenny on Instagram @alwaysgrowing_alwaysenough, where she shares her findings on learning to navigate new pathways in mental health and life while raising awareness about topics such as OCD, cPTSD, Migraine, Grief, and more! Go give her page a peek, a follow, or any kind of support!

Jenny was kind enough to provide us some resources on navigating disability rights! Check them out here:

  • Models of Disability (this concept really changed my perspective and was totally new to me even with all my experience with people with disabilities. I realized how outdated my understanding of disability was).

  • “Assume That I Can” ad

    • Youtube

    • Interesting because it really challenges stereotypes and preconceived ideas of what disability means.

      • (I can see this in Finding Nemo with how Marlin treats and talks to Nemo)
