This is a special episode of Mr. & Mrs. CEO. Kimberley is interviewing her oldest daughter, Ashley. She’s been around and worked in family businesses her entire life. Listen for her take on what it’s like to work with and for your parents and lots more.
For starters, Ashley explains that for the first time in her life, she’s working for someone else. Before that, she worked for Kimberley and Darren and helped to build a million-dollar business.
Hear how working that job helped her. She liked the flexibility that allowed her to be a working mom, taking care of her kids and being able to arrange her schedule around their needs.
She also mentions all the things that job taught her including:
Managing people
Accounting systems
Customer support
Product knowledge and expertise
When she needed a new job she was worried about what sort of job she should pursue. That’s when Kim had an aha moment during the podcast! This really surprised her:
“You didn’t recognize the role you held in (our) business as an equal role to any other business.”
When Kimberley and Darren wanted to shift from the business that Ashley had been running, they were committed to making sure she understood what was happening. As it turns out, she left before they sold the business. Both Kim and Ashley admit they both could have handled it better.
They both share how the family dynamic comes into play. Ashley didn’t want to let her parents down, and she also knew she had to leave and do her own thing. Like many things in life, making that change was both necessary and a bit scary.
Ashely shares her advice for anyone considering working in a family business. Learning to navigate relationships outside and inside of the business is key. Learning how to have awkward conversations is also important.
Kim asks if she would work in a family business in the future. You might be surprised at her answer.
