In this episode Darren and Kim share their book-writing process and the things that are coming up as they reflect back on their experiences. They’re focused on a topic they know well, family business. They’ve got tons of experience and practical advice and they share the things that you aren’t going to find in your traditional business book.   A key point: building a family business is 100% about relationships.   It can be easy to criticize the drama and extra issues that arise when it’s family. It’s hard for everyone, not just the owner or leader. Family dynamics come into play, and it will affect how you proceed in your business.   Kim shares a personal experience about how a business decision by her daughter felt really personal to her in the moment.  Family business is personal. – Darren and Kim Hiebert   How could it not be personal? Kim quotes one of her favorite movies, You’ve Got Mail:   “All that means is that it wasn't personal to you. But it was personal to me. It's *personal* to a lot of people. And what's so wrong with being personal, anyway?  Whatever else anything is, it ought to begin by being personal.”  Looking back as they write the book, they’re seeing what happened in the past with a new perspective. Things that they couldn’t really see when in the weeds of the day to day running of the business.   Kim shares that keeping the “business” separate from the “family” isn’t possible, but there’s a tendency to cling to that idea.   Darren shares his goal: to help others in family businesses. Picture the idea when things start, and the dreams attached to building a family legacy. Expectations and reality don’t always (maybe never) match so what do you do then?   That’s what Kim and Darren want the book to address.   Connect with Kim and Darren  Get the Bubble Bath Boardroom Weekly Email Here    Connect on Instagram – THE HIEBERTS   Learn more about your ad choices.
