Soft tissue healing occurs in 4 stages. I would like to explain how chiropractic care positively affects the resolution of various types of pain related to soft tissue injuries and chronic soft tissue implications.

Let's begin with Stage 1 Chiropractic Soft Tissue treatment goals. Swelling occurs for 12- 72 hours post-traumatic insult. The motion is lost in the area affected. Chiropractic care is typically going to involve rest and support of the injured area along with ice. The goal is to block swelling, pain, and spasm.

Stage 2 of chiropractic management of soft tissue injury involves relieving passive congestion. Fluid gets trapped in the tissue which then restricts motion and causes pain. This congestion also delays healing, this is typically seen in days 2 through 4 post-injury. The goal of the chiropractic treatment is to remove fluid, offer pain relief, and to begin to restore motion. How a chiropractor does this is by chiropractic adjustments in the area involved. The chiropractic treatment will restore motion, block pain, relax tight muscles, and accelerate healing.

Stage 3 chiropractic care of soft tissue injuries involves repair of the damaged areas. This can begin as early as 5 days post-injury. Scar tissue starts to form in this stage. Scar tissue forms in an unorganized fashion to support the subluxated vertebra, in the case of spinal injury. The chiropractic adjustment is a controlled force applied to areas that are restricted preventing the body 's natural ability to heal. The chiropractor will determine where to apply the force. The chiropractic adjustment is done in a safe, effective, and comfortable way to reduce excessive scar tissue formation. Stage 3 of chiropractic management of soft tissue treatment can last up to 6 weeks post-injury. During stage 3 the chiropractor needs to address a limited range of motion as well as poor spinal biomechanics. These contribute to increased risk of re-injury and accelerated degeneration. This leads to chronic pain and weak muscles and ligaments. Restoring normal motion by adjusting the spinal segment involved allows the tissue to heal in a more functional way.

Stage 4 of chiropractic management of soft tissue injury is called the remodeling phase. When connective tis
