Kyla (from Cakes By Kyla) is back in the Podvan!

It’s been ages (three kids ago, apparently!) since Kyla’s been in. We catch up on what’s happened since she closed the cupcake store after 8 crazy years, and how she’s gone back to her roots. Of course, with Kyla’s massive social media following comes a whole lot of drama... we talk about the controversy, how she’s developed a thick skin to deal with the trolls, and the story behind the new Central Coast Farmer’s Markets (and the online #marketwars that kicked off!).

We also get completely sidetracked by emoji shortcuts, dodgy internet speeds, and why we both get our fists up when we’re startled.

You can follow Kyla's amazing creations over at https://www.instagram.com/cakesbykyla

If you enjoy it, feel free to leave a comment - or maybe rate the podcast if you haven't done so yet? Thanks heaps!!

Rabbit podcast with Rabbit. I'm Rabbit.
I record this podcast inside a cute little retro caravan from
1967 that I've tore around all over the place.
Fan podcast with Rabbit. Kyla is in with me again today.
Who? If you don't know Kyla, she had
the cupcake store for how many years?
88 years? Yeah.

(00:24):
Well, you did a lot in those eight years from nothing to
yeah. Yeah, sorry, that loss of ours.
That was Cakes by Kyla. Which Cakes by Kyla still
exists? Still here and now actually
being truer to the name, Yeah. How I started.
Doing doing cakes. Back to what I'm good at.
Yeah, actually, my son's birthday cake order is already

(00:45):
in with you. I do need a flavour by the way.
Oh, he told me. Oh, I can't remember.
So I'll ask him again all. Right, I'll forget by the time I
get home anyway. I was like Kyla started from,
yes, baking cakes at home and then went into the business and
it went absolutely huge, massivefollowing on social media and
got some controversy along the way as well.

(01:06):
And we'll have a bit of a chat about that stuff.
Thanks for coming down. Pleasure.
Been a long time since you've been in here, yeah.
You've had three kids since then.
Right, they're all grown. Up.
It's been that long. I'm always shocked when someone
says like, remember Andrew G from Australian Idol?
Yeah. Didn't he change his name?

(01:28):
Yeah, OSHA Ginsberg. I couldn't try and say that,
yeah. Yeah, he has this podcast and
it's been going for I feel like 14 years or something.
And I'm like, podcast's been around that long.
Makes you feel old, doesn't it? Not so when you you realise that
your favorite band has got their30th anniversary and you're
like. Oh, I know, I know.

(01:49):
It's weird when that stuff rollsaround.
So things we're gonna talk to you about today we should
probably have a catch up about the ADHD 'cause you started my
whole journey on crazy. Yeah, same.
Forget AT shirt that says that too.
Crazy. We're gonna talk about these new
farmers markets because you started hashtag market wars
online. Oops.

(02:10):
So funny watching that. I love the comments from people.
Someone will just post that one of Michael Jackson sitting
eating popcorn. The Thriller.
Here we go yeah I think my 2 most used like emojis at the
moment are the popcorn and the face palm so.
You're like that. You're.
Using or no like that that people are yeah being put on my
page so. Yeah, I like the the two eyes

(02:32):
looking to the side. Yeah, not the not a full face
emoji, just the eyes. Yeah.
What did I type to bring that one up?
I think I type eyes. Yeah, I said how you do it?
Do you? How do you do emojis?
You type and then it just gives you what you.
But then sometimes I stuff up and I just send them hearts.
Oh yeah, the other day I sent 'cause I'll type LOL.
And then it comes up with the laughing.

(02:52):
Yeah, yeah, that's what I call it, the laugh cry emoji.
But I typed oh, LUG, that's right.
I mean typed lol. I typed LUG and then I thought
I'd selected and then I sent themessage and then I looked a bit
LUG. I like the story about the lady
who she thought that lol was lots of love so like she was

(03:13):
sending people condolences and at the end ending up with lol.
Yeah, yeah. What did Julie do?
She had one like that. What's SMF?
No, that's smack my face. Is it?
I might have just made that one.Oh no, that's SMH.
That's smack my head. Your face.
What's isn't it? I'll smack my face.

(03:33):
That works instead of typing face palm because I.
You type face palm. I do.
I do. SMH.
OK. Yeah.
And it brings up the the face palm 1.
You type face palm. This is interesting.
OK, good. Because I've always wondered how
everyone else does emojis. I'll type the word and then it
just goes. I know what you mean.
Right? Yeah, exactly.
Do you know what's a tough one to do?

(03:54):
Fingers crossed. No that's such a pain I'm so bad
at. Like not spelling but typing the
correct letter. I rely on the autocorrect a lot
and it doesn't know what I'm talking about.
I've learned all the shortcuts. So to get the fingers crossed 1
you know someone, you're in the drawer.
Good luck. Want to put the fingers crossed?
You type fingers, you're not going to get it.
You got to go crossed. Oh, yeah, crossed it goes.

(04:15):
You mean your fingers crossed? Yeah, yeah.
Cool. OK, this is.
What I'm here for, Yeah. Handy hints.
SMF type that. No, I was thinking when I said
SMF, I was thinking FML, that's.Yeah, I I use that one a bit.
There's no emoji for that. There could be I.
Don't know what it would be. An eggplant, and I don't know

(04:36):
how you do a. Lot, I'm afraid you start.
Singing that to people and eggplant, you gotta be careful
with that one. You do.
I love it when people don't realise what they're sending.
And they said just like, especially the oldies, and they
put it in the comments on Facebook.
And I'm like, Oh dear. Oh dear.
When when I first got into council they gave us some social

(04:58):
media training and they had to teach us all about emojis and
which ones not to use and that was on the list.
Was that poo emoji? Obviously that one's on the
list. You can't do what else was on
the list. Can you remember, oh, I can't
remember, but the egg, that was definitely one of the ones that.
Were can't do eggplants I think.Pineapples was on this.
Oh yeah, Pineapples. I didn't even know that that was
an emoji, but yes. Yep.

(05:19):
And happy something and happy. I'm remembering the Julie one.
What's? Is there an abbreviation?
That's something. AH no AF and you know what the F
is? Yeah, as.
Something is. What's this?
What's the abbreviation? Oh no, it's just, it's just the
AF. That's right.

(05:41):
So. There's everything you could put
for her so that which one would be used on rotation.
Yeah, and and Julie thought it was and funny.
Uh huh. I'm happy and funny.
How did it work? Send a mum a message going.
I'm happy happy AF today. Good for you Mum.

(06:05):
Glad to hear. Yeah, like I almost got there
with that story. I just knew that there was
something with your. So we use it all the time.
She'll she'll use and funny. I am tired and funny right now.
I'm like, Oh yes, I'm all right. So what's your most used?
Probably face palm. Yeah, talking to the kids.

(06:29):
Yeah, but SMH now, yeah. Yeah, I think he's way quicker.
Mine, it's the eyes looking to the side.
I love that one. Yeah.
And I like sending that with just that.
Yeah. That's a I'm sorry, what?
What did you? Say, do you still send gifts?
No, never got into that, didn't you?
No. Oh, I'm still there.
Yeah, yeah, 'cause I get then I get lost in the doom scroll of

(06:50):
choosing it's. So much fun.
Yeah. My favorite one is Homer backing
into a hedge. Yes, that's a lot of my ones are
just like awkward ones, the eyeslooking to the side.
Did you see on my Facebook page, like a couple of months ago, we
had a plumbing problem and we had the took a photo of our
plumber who's like a good friendfrom school, just his legs

(07:11):
sticking out of the head. And then we did a home of it.
That's right. Who did it better?
I did see that. That's great.
I quite often do the cat typing manically on a keyboard as well.
That's just going so busy right now.
It's just a cat. It's all on that one.
I think it was off one of those cooking shows or something and
it's got the four squares and it's got the 2 girls and then
the cat with the weird face at the bottom and there's always

(07:32):
different things. I don't know, but I don't know.
He's always sending the It's thesame white cat that's got a name
but I don't. Know.
Don't even know that one. Wow.
He sends it all the time with all different things, so it's
just a look on the cat's face. Yeah, yeah.
I don't know if anyone else is sending those anymore.
I mean, I don't really get any from any.
Oh, Julie. Yeah.
Yeah, I don't get them as messages, but lots of people put

(07:54):
them on the comments on my page so.
Yeah, that's where they're good,yeah.
They're cool when your internet's working.
What do you mean? Well, if the internet's not
working, I just get like a frozen screen.
I have to guess what they mean. Oh, because it doesn't.
It's not low, it's not animated. The worst reception where I
live. It's just like, really.
Yeah. Oh no.
It's been ever since we lived there.

(08:14):
But not like your wired Internet.
Yeah, we even upgraded to NBN and it's still terrible.
I had a mate at the other day, he was saying how bad his
Internet connection was. I was like, hey, go to
speedtest.net and hit go on thatand tell me what?
Tell me what you're getting. I love knowing people's upload
and download speeds. It's it's a strange thing.
Yeah. Have.
Yeah. I'm gonna need to know yours

(08:36):
now. OK, When you get home, I'll do
that. Probably a big part of it is the
fact that mine's Ripper fast like crazy.
My boys are gamers, not like heaps gamers, but they do like
to game. But they get so frustrated.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Just their Internet like though,
it'll be going great and then all of a sudden it'll stop and
they're like, you know, there's games where if you stop playing,

(08:56):
that's it, you're out kind of thing.
Yeah, like completely ruins, right.
I'm not a gamer, so I don't. I know exactly what you're
talking about. Yeah, Jordan used to play
Rainbow 6 Siege and that'd be it.
Yeah. And because yeah, they'll
downvote you if you you'll get banned from thanks because they
think you like rage quit. Yes, yeah, but it's just the
internet's dropped out or mum's being annoying and just turn the

(09:18):
Internet off because you weren'tdoing a chore.
Yeah. Have you done that?
Oh yeah, Do you? Not regularly anymore.
They're kind of bigger now, but I did back in the day.
You were like you were. That was a thing, yeah.
That you could either sort of goaround.
You could just. 3rd warning if Itell you again I'm turning the
Internet off. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Yeah, turning the Internet off for everybody all.
You think you is just flip the switch and flip it back on

(09:40):
again, and the time that it takes to reload, they've lost
it. Exactly.
I almost want you to. Yeah.
Can you text one of the boys nowand get them to run a speed
check for me? Yeah.
Yeah. Yeah, hang on, who's hurrying?
It's like that at our place. I never know who's who's.
Like someone will come walking around the corner.
I have this thing that I do where in my house if I walk

(10:01):
around the corner and someone's there, my fists fly up so fast.
Yeah, I go and just straight. I'm defending my housemate.
I did this the other time did. You.
I was. I was home.
I don't remember if it was morning or not.
It must have been early morning and I'm the only one.
Sean gets up and goes to work really early.
He leaves at like 435. Yeah, so, but I'm, I usually get

(10:23):
up and one of his mates takes him to work.
So I get up and cook them a hot breakfast and send them off.
And then I'm just sort of pottering around on my own.
And I was walking around the corner and Tyran thought it
would be a great idea to sneak up on me.
Oh, no, I nearly decked him. Yeah, I turned around.
Gee, a fist up. That's interesting.
I was like, dude, what are you doing?
Like, 'cause I didn't scream or dump or anything.
I just really hit him and I was like, wow.

(10:44):
I go straight to like Dukes up I'm.
Not a violent person. I've never hit anyone before in
my life. That was my first reaction.
I'm like I scared. Myself yeah, that's funny you
scared yourself like when you first.
Said, Who was that? Oh, it's times like that that
you find out who you really are.Yeah.
And Savile, say, Savile, be like, what are you?
You know, it's only the two of us home.

(11:05):
But I don't know. No, you don't.
I don't know who's really comingaround that corner.
Yeah, I think I read too many books, and then there's always
fighting in the books that I'm reading, so I don't know why.
Yeah, right there. Seems to be a theme at the
moment, but maybe that's where Igot it from.
It seems to be a theme at the moment, says the lady choosing
the books. Yeah, need to call you a lady.
That, that's a weird thing to say as well.

(11:26):
Right after that, certain peopleI think of as ladies.
No, I'm just a girl. I'm, I think of myself as
anybody goes like woman or lady. And I'm like, oh, I'm not that
old. OK, thank you.
Oh my God. When?
People call you ma'am and I'm like, who?
Yeah, ma'am, I like Tiana calls as a 15 year old calls mum ma'am

(11:46):
and she called me Sir and I loveit.
Yes Sir. I'll be at this in text messages
generally, but yeah, there's certain ones that Lady Fitz.
Yeah, not me. You know, you're just one of the
girls. Yeah, one of the girls.
I don't think I am one of the girls.
I'm always one of the boys. Like I like it was, yeah.
Sean had a 25 year reunion for school and I was insulted I

(12:10):
wasn't invited because like withall the boys getting to, I'm
like, hey, I'm one of the crew. I didn't go to the school, but
I'm one of the why am I not there?
Tell the boys I'm seriously disappointed that I wasn't
invited because I should have been there, probably.
Why you and I get on so well that because Sav's one of the
boys. Yeah.
Yeah, she's always, you know, when we first, first met, one of
the things that really sort of sealed the deal was it was State
of Origin night. This is in Queenstown in New

(12:32):
Zealand. So Kiwis don't even really care
about State of Origin, but we did.
We'll take any occasion to. It's 200.
There's beer. There's some kind of.
Exactly and Yep. So I've turned up with snacks
and booze and came around to watch State of Origin.
Brilliant. My flatmates at the times names
were Hootie and the Blowfish. Did you text one of the kids and

(12:56):
go? I did.
What did you say they're really bad at?
But I feel like your instructions wouldn't have been
great. Oh hey, he did it.
What do you got? What's your What's your
download? Doesn't have the and did.
You explain what did you send tohim?
Because he must go. What the?
Oh, dude, what are you talking about?
That's Crankin. Is it good?
193 download and 40 Meg upload. Yeah, that's solid.

(13:18):
OK. Maybe I'm lying.
I mean, I get about 650 downloadand 100 upload, but that's a
crazy fast connection, yeah. You mine's usually so bad that
you can't even get like, it'll sit there thinking about
potentially putting YouTube on for you or maybe maybe Netflix
might log. Like, it like, loads that first
screen. Yeah.

(13:38):
And then it gets stuck. I really hope that time of
night. Oh yeah, that's the thing.
In the evening when everyone jumps on, I really hope everyone
else listening goes and does their checks their Internet
speed at home. You can just go to speedtest.net
and and then please upload your speeds.
So yeah, this mate that I was saying, he was really struggling

(13:58):
with downloading some stuff. I was like run the test and he
was getting like, so bear in mind, what are you about 1:30 or
something like that there download speed and mine's
6:50-ish usually he was getting 2.
He goes wait wait nearly 3 and an upload is speed of like 1.

(14:19):
You can almost hear the dial up.Yeah, yeah, echoing away in the
background. All right, well, none of this is
what I wanted to talk to you about.
Sorry. I have a tendency for doing.
This. So do I.
You've had a lot of action from trolls online lately.
Yeah. Which is it's, I mean, it's,

(14:40):
it's fun to watch. Great show, like people
engaging. Yes, but when I say it's fun to
watch, I don't like it when theyget Julie.
You know, because she cops some horrible, nasty people in
herself. Yeah, can be me.
I don't mind when they when theyhave a go at you because thanks
because I like the way you handle them.

(15:01):
Bully them right back, yeah. You kind of do, yeah.
No, that's how I am. I think in real life, you know,
like I'm generally a pretty nice, sweet person.
I treat everybody nicely. But come at me and.
Just go up. We've we've established this.
You're a fighter. No, I.
Find and find out. I different people can handle

(15:22):
this in different ways. I'm not built for it, right?
So like the controversial stuff and that I, no, I couldn't
handle it. I couldn't handle it and that's
what I mean why I find it. I I enjoy watching when people
start having a go or whatever. First off, everyone jumps to
your defence. Oh yeah.
But such a good community and like we don't even have to say
anything anymore. People just are like on they're

(15:44):
going. We got you, you know?
Yeah, I think that's why I've got the attitude I do because I
know that I have a community that has my my back.
So yeah. Sarah Kerns, you know her?
Yeah. So she's been on the podcast a
couple of times and oh, my God, there's, there's people just out
to get her, which I think you'vegot now as well.
Do you? Yeah, You've got ones that are
just straight up. Just just.
Trolling you? Yeah.

(16:04):
And you look at the sort of, if you follow these people back to
other things that they also comment on, it's the type of
person they are they Oh totally. They, they do this to not just
one person, but generally quite a few people.
And it's like a aiming life to try to bring people down and.
Like I can't get my head around it.
This is the way I think about itis that that person has to live

(16:26):
their entire life being like that, living this miserable
thing, whereas I just sort of laugh it off and go, well, you
do you buddy. I'm just going to be over here
being happy and. Yeah, I'll have a nice little
wrap up for this segment in a second.
I've just thought of something that's about those people that
are doing that, but with the Sarah Kern stuff.
Every now and then it'll go too far and she'll actually like

(16:49):
screenshot them and post them upthere for everyone.
So do you. Do that.
Yeah, not so much anymore, but Iused to back in the day when I
didn't have as much of that community backing and support
that I have now. Yeah, but 100% believe in
calling out bad behaviour. You can't get away with that
kind of thing. And if you want to say something

(17:09):
publicly, you've got to prove, be prepared for it to be shared
publicly. That's.
What she said when she posted that one, she was like, well,
look, it wasn't a message that had been sent to her.
It was a public comment on the page, you know.
Yeah, you put this out there, not me, buddy.
Yeah. So let me amplify it for you.
Exactly here. Well, I personally, I've got to
a stage where I've got a pretty thick skin.
So I think that's why like when it comes to dealing with things

(17:31):
with council and all that kind of thing, I was more able to
sort of step into that because Ihad this background of being
fairly thick skinned. So you cough it with like you.
Of course you do. We I put a post up about the
fact that we found an extra $20 million to put into roads to try
and fix some of the horrible. Like down the back of the couch

(17:52):
or something. Yeah.
Yeah, yeah, it was just tucked in. $20 million to the
briefcase, what is in that one over there?
What? Hey, what's this at the back of
the cupboard? You guys 20?
Million, Yeah. What should we do with this?
So we all like there's horrible, horrible holes around my house
too, like we're all very aware of how bad the roads.
Are so you just fix the ones around your place.

(18:12):
Yeah, just don't tell anyone no.But the we put this extra money
and I put a post up on my page go, hey guys, we've like we've
identified these like some of them were quite bad sort of
black spot kind of areas and places where there was, had been
pretty bad accidents and a lot of community concern about
safety. So we put this extra money into

(18:34):
some of these places and we put a big announcement up going, hey
guys, we've found this. It's like it's super exciting.
You know where we're trying and the amount of hate that we got
on that, we're just like, whoa. Yeah, say like and a few.
People thing was negative everything like you put up a
post about opening the new library and how exciting it is
and you get nothing but hate. So like that side of things is

(18:57):
very different from my purse. Like not personal page on my own
business page where everything we I try to keep light and for
the most part other than that controversial.
Yeah, yeah. So when you say you've got a
thick skin, have you developed that through this though?
Yeah. Really very, very soft When when
I first started this, I didn't want a Facebook page, I didn't

(19:17):
want social media. I I'm very shy naturally, I hate
public speaking. I don't I don't have a lot of
confidence in myself. Yeah.
So when all of this, So what youshould?
Do is just put a ton of stuff out on social media and run for
council? Run for council.
Yeah, why not? So it's totally me, but over the

(19:38):
years, like it's been 15 years now since I've had the Facebook
page. And you do get like a lot of
support, but you do get a lot ofhate too.
And you get a a lot of negative comments that you don't expect
and people like over the years, not liking a design of cake or
something that you've put a whole lot of time, effort and
love into. And that's crushing when you

(19:58):
think that you've done somethingbeautiful and that your client
will love and then they don't love it.
And that kind of thing is client.
Well, yeah, not so much recently.
I've changed like my methods andhow I work and stuff now, but
originally back in the day. So there was like different
forms of crushing along the along the time.
And there were times where I wasin tears and like people said,
me. Things and they call me fat and

(20:18):
they hate my eyebrows and you know, like all this kind of.
Stuff. Way to make me look at your
eyebrows. But like anything that you do,
people that like you get a lot of love and spot, but you get
the hate as well. And you I, I got to say now
where I just laugh at it and I just feel sorry for that person
because. That's incredible that you can
get to that, yeah. Stage it's that it's a
reflection on them. They're not, it's not a
reflection of you. It's an reflection of them and

(20:39):
their life and what's going on in their their world.
And they're just punching it outon you.
And this is where I wanted to get to.
So I have a really thick skin with this stuff for other
people. So I, I can talk to Julie when
she's copying horrible stuff online.
And I can say to her, you know, that is nothing about you.
That's that person. Yeah, it's all about that

(21:01):
person. And.
They're talking about themselves, but sending it to
you. Yeah, yeah.
I mean the type of person that will jump on and say horrible
stuff about another person online.
I just. How do you get joy from that I?
Can't understand it, but then I think of I went and interviewed
Julia Baird at a writing festival, Words on the Waves,

(21:22):
earlier this year, and she has the new book out Bright Shining,
Which I think should be called Grace, because it's all about
grace. This book, it's such a good book
you like reading. I love reading.
Yeah, I go through one to two books a week.
Really I'm. Mad.
I highly recommend this one, andI think it's here in the pod van
somewhere. So I'm going to send you away

(21:44):
with a book today. Something that she talks about,
and this whole book is all aboutgrace and the very start of it
sort of describes what grace is.And really, I think it kind of
comes down to cutting other people slack because you don't
know. What's going on in there?
What's? Going and that's a huge thing,
right? You have no idea what he was.
That's what I now try to look atanyone who's doing that sort of

(22:05):
stuff online and if they're doing it repeatedly or if they
do it once or whatever, you kindof gotta go.
What's happening in your? What's?
Going on here and then you sad you can almost get to a point
where you actually feel sorry for them and not in a
condescending like right back tothem going you OK there babe?
No, you feel something like that.
I'm all for that and that's exactly how I think.
And I think that's what's helpedgive me a bit of a thick skin is

(22:27):
that I, I do genuinely feel for people who are like that because
I'm like, I'm a pretty happy person.
I try and always look at the positive side of life, even when
stuff's falling apart and not going the way I think it should.
I'm like, well, there's got to be a reason for this.
Because when in six months time, when I look back on this, I'm
going to say, hey, if all that rubbish hadn't happened, then I

(22:49):
wouldn't be where I am. So I have that kind of positive
outlook on life. And then I think if these people
have the opposite and they've got this horrible negative way
of looking at the life and everything around them, how
miserable must that be? Like, but but also what things
have led to that? Yeah, yeah.
What things? Through their life, we could get
to that phase where everything is negative all the time.

(23:11):
Yeah. The only thing that you can
think of, even about a happy post, like we had people that
would put these weird like negative and posts about
cupcakes and cakes and stuff like how can you not be happy,
hungry cupcakes. Yeah, like people.
And. I don't get it.
Wow. And one of the things that you
were copying it for recently waslike when you were just posting

(23:33):
about like nice meals that you've had at places.
Yeah. So because I've got the two hats
with counsel and with like business.
So people think that I'm abusingmy role as a counselor or that
that I'm using any position thatI have to take advantage of

(23:54):
businesses to try and get free meals or whatever.
But they don't say that I pay for my meals.
I don't make a huge song and dance of being there.
I go there like any normal person.
I eat my meal, I say thank you. I clean up the table afterwards
because I've worked in hospital my whole life and I appreciate
that sort of thing. I tuck my chair in, I leave
quietly and yeah, I've paid for my meal.
And I do that to try and supportsmall business because I know

(24:17):
how hard small business is. And if I can use a little bit of
my platform to try and boost somebody else, regardless of
what which hats I've got on, I, I think that that's a good
thing. I'm supporting my community.
I'm supporting all of the local small businesses, families and
that are doing it tough, like business is hard.
And knowing you, I know that that is all 100% true.

(24:40):
Yeah, I did. I didn't know that you were
paying for those meals. Yeah.
So I was actually, because, you know, I come from a media
background where you will quite often get invited out to, hey,
come and dine at our place and, and, and give it a little plug
on the radio or post a photo up online or something.
Yeah, I'm down for a free meal. Yeah, occasionally I will get an

(25:00):
invite to something like that, but it's very rare.
For the most part it's just me and so on.
And whoever I'm weasel, my girlfriend cry or whatever,
we're just like, hey, you want to go wherever I feel like a
cheat meal. Let's go somewhere yummy.
Yeah. And we'll take photos and we'll
share it. So like, yeah, yeah, 99.9% of
all the food posts I do, nobody knows I'm coming.

(25:21):
I pay for everything, Yeah. Yeah, but that's the thing I
think would shock most people isthat you're paying for
everything because. Because they look like sponsored
posts. Yeah.
You give it so much love. Oh.
Yeah, but that's, I genuinely love small business.
I genuinely love what these people are doing.
And you, if you've ever worked in hospitality, you know the,

(25:42):
the extra that goes in behind the scenes that the, the yucky
bits that you don't see, all thecleaning and the emptying bins
and scrubbing floors and the, the bookwork side of things and,
and the extra hours on top of already long hours.
And these people are doing it day in day out to feed their
families. And it's hard.
And if you've been in that world, you just want to support
those people who are still in there doing the hard yards.

(26:04):
It's really interesting when you've been in small business
and you know, myself being one now as well.
Yeah, when you realise that behind all of these businesses
are people actually trying to put food on the table.
Yeah, pay the bills and that kind of.
Thing and you make it look pretty from the outside and you
don't show the people the well, most people don't show people

(26:24):
they're not pretty side of things because yeah, people only
want to see the pretty stuff, yeah.
I loved the comment from someonethat you actually replied to.
How the hell are you eating out so much and you're still like
staying in shape? There's someone right there was
just like because you will have you'll just sit down with it was
the one I think it was Warnies and you had this massive was

(26:46):
there breakfast thing that they do on a big chopping board and
it's just loaded. So great.
I love food. Like I genuinely love food.
It's one of my happy places, yeah.
You run a lot. Yeah, I would like to run more.
Not as much as you. Were not as much as I was, but
I'm. You're running nearly every day
before. I was, yeah.
And then I got a knee injury andhad to that's.
Gonna happen. You know what You know what
causes that? Running every day I.

(27:07):
Know. King Kumper might have Chan have
been big supporters of the pod Dan podcast right from the start
and you get all the stuff from them that you'd expect to you
get plans, you get all the Weberstuff, you get all the steel
gear, the amazing principal kitchens, but it's the stuff
that you don't expect like we. Had an elderly lady come into
the store and she brought her remote control from her

(27:28):
television and she didn't know how to get it to work.
And we opened it up and saw thatshe just needed new batteries.
And then she told me that her husband had recently passed away
so he was the one that did all that stuff for her and she
didn't have anybody around to dothat so she needed us.
So we took batteries out of the packet and put them in the
remote and we helped her out andmade her day.

(27:49):
That's what she get the mighty helpful King Campbell Minor Gen.

(28:33):
AU. Everywhere I go at the moment,
doctors, optometrist. Ohh when you get to your age
it's to be expecting I'm. Sorry, what?
One more person says that's. I'm sorry, what?
Hey, Rabbit wouldn't even call me a lady.
I'm a girl. A girl, but you say when you get

(28:53):
to your age. I've heard that so many times
lately I'm. Like LA Rude.
Yeah, I had one recently where Iwas walking, you know, when
you're going through the suit, when you're going through a
shopping centre and they have those hearing clinics and that.
So there's two places that nevercall out to me.
There's the Gold 1. You know where they stand there
and they'll, I don't know, they'll pay you for your gold
stuff. They never even like, look at

(29:13):
me. They've they've clocked me from
a while out and gone. He's got nothing.
I don't make eye contact. Yeah, yeah.
And Oh yeah, you're loaded up with gold, don't you?
They're very good. I worked in Dory for a very long
time. Right.
Have a particular taste? They got traps set for you, I
reckon, whereas me, they don't even give me a second look.

(29:35):
And the other one is the hearingplace with the person standing
out the front and you see them going, good day mate.
Would you like to, you know, do a free hearing test work?
They've never approached me. And then recently someone goes,
good day mate, there you go. And I went, Oh no you don't.
When you get to. Your race, obviously that's
happened and they've gone. You look, you look right.

(29:56):
Let's see how your hearings. Well, I.
Haven't got to that stage yet. Never respected my hearing yet.
How many times do you reckon that dude that stands out the
front of the hearing place and goes get out?
Maybe you go what? Yeah, totally.
Everyone. What's that mate?
Sorry, what? Sorry.
And then and then you have to goin if you didn't hear what he
said. Actually, that'd be a fun
little. That'd be a good sales tactic
for them out there actually is. He could just, like, mouth to

(30:18):
people as they've walked past and they go, sorry, what?
Oh, God. I'm really struggling to hear
you. Do you wanna?
Do you wanna come in? Thank you.
You should do marketing, yeah. God, I should go and do that.
I've recently started thinking again about because I used to do

(30:40):
prank calls on the radio a lot. A lot, a lot, a lot would.
You love listening to this. Oh my God, like seriously,
there's no, I don't even like talking about it.
It's there. There is so much cancellable
stuff that I did, I did back then.
Oh my God, that makes sense. With it you can't do.
It no, you can't can't do anything anymore.

(31:00):
But I got some of those Ray Ban meta glasses.
And you're telling me, yeah, yourecord like POV style video,
really good for filming content.I, I had them on when I was
doing an episode in here the other day.
And so I get a, a view straight from here as well as the other
cameras. And there was a lady at King
Cumber Mitre 10 the other day. You've seen the one where I went

(31:22):
up to her and I put a box over the things she was buying.
And I said, if you can guess what I'm, what I've got like
around the side or whatever, then it's free.
Cool. Yeah, because I haven't seen
this yet. I.
Was playing a game with people at the counter.
I just go up to them, box over, and so they can't see the stuff
that's there. I've got a camera set up behind
me, camera set up on the other side, and I was wearing these
glasses to capture their facial expressions and stuff.

(31:45):
Turns out I move my head way toofast all the time.
It's just a blur essentially. Put like a camera on a
Labradoodle. It's what, some bouncing around
the place. And yeah, there's one lady in
particular, the one that's goingup.
I go, if you can guess what's going here, then it's free.
And she goes, is it the stuff I'm about to buy?
And I'm like, maybe because technically, yeah.

(32:09):
And so it's cheating. I know.
And so we covered. Yes, fine, we'll pay for all of
it. So that was a fun game.
But yeah, the glasses are good for that.
But I keep coming up with ideas of like funny prank stuff I
could do and so going and talking to the guy at the
hearing place, you know, going up to him and going mate, I work
in marketing, I've got an idea or going up to him and going,

(32:29):
hey, I'm Kevin from head office. They've asked me to come down
and run you through our new how do you think we're going to do
outside the stores 'cause when Iwas doing all of this stuff, all
the prank stuff on the radio videos weren't that big.
They were just sort of coming in.
It was all just over the phone and except one that we did
video. We went to a cinema and this.

(32:53):
Is so good. We went to a cinema and there
were people all standing in the line, you know, to go up and buy
their tickets and popcorn and that.
And we got someone to walk up and go to the person like second
in line, just go up to and go. So can I just jump in front of
my movies just about to start and the lady's like, yeah, no
drums yet. Go jump in.

(33:14):
And they jumped in. And then when this person walked
up to the counter, we had a bandcome out.
We had confetti go off and everything.
We came out with this giant novelty check because they were
the 1 millionth customer and they won $50,000 for for being
the one and the camera that was on the lady that had given her
birth spot. It would have been filthy.

(33:34):
It was so good. That's one of the few video
ones. Great dude.
Yeah. I love that.
Fun times. But now you know.
Now that Lady would sue us, of course.
For. Three mental anguish or or
something and. And I get it.
Yeah, I actually get it now. Like it's kind of like, yeah,
fair enough. That would mess you up even
though afterwards you go oh it was all a joke.

(33:55):
Just a joke. Some of the stuff I did, oh, I
think. People are too sensitive.
Yeah. You grow a thicker skin.
Too. I'm too scared to do it now.
Can I just do it all in phone calls to Julie?
Oh, Julie. She's fine.
I don't have any other friends. These new markets that have
kicked off in Gosford and for anyone and not well, they're

(34:17):
going to be actually at the timeof this podcast coming out, they
haven't started yet the new farmers markets.
Yeah, 16. For anyone outside of the
Central Coast, market wars has been happening.
Hashtag market wars. Well, that's what people have
turned it into online. It was never intended to be that
way, no. Forever.
I don't think you've said anything bad at all about the
other market buckets or anything, but there's new ones

(34:40):
starting up and you've been given it some support.
Yeah, online and it's at the show grounds.
Yep. On Sundays.
Yep, that's where the old one used to be.
And it's from 7:00 AM, Yeah, on the Sunday.
And I hear, I've never been there at 7:00 AM, but I hear
that there's a line and a Stampede.
So. I was I to going to ask you what
the thing was that we were cracking up talking about on the

(35:01):
phone earlier this morning it. Was making you the rabbit at the
greyhound race in front of all these?
People, That's right. We need to get a greyhound
commentator there to call this like.
Yeah. And then I said to you actually
done it before. So I heard because your idea was
7:00, there's a lineup of of people.
Yeah. Crushing to get through the

(35:21):
gates to be the first one at thelike at Pete's, at the Pete's.
To get the freshest, yeah, fruitand veg and and that kind.
Which really blew my mind. Like the farm, the farm stuff is
always amazing. I've gone there multiple times
and it's always been delicious and amazing in such variety.
But I never knew that there was a STEM food at the gates every
Sunday morning. I thought, that's gold.
I'm going down there early just to see this.

(35:43):
Yeah. And so you had the idea of with
your mark getting brain on that,I turn up there and then like
run from all the people at the gates.
With rabbity as well. But with like some sort of like
a fluffy tail, a voucher or a prize or something.
Yeah, all those things you just said I've done before, the
fluffy tail, the rabbity is and everything.
It was as it was this it was over in Adelaide, Brackie radio

(36:07):
stunt thing at a greyhound trackand yeah, I got a massive head
start but I was running along with sausages.
I would be terrified. I would be so.
Scared. It is so crazy how fast these
things are, these dogs. Like, I know how my how fast my
little teeny tiny dog would Koran.
Yeah. Can't imagine.
Yeah. Yeah, greyhounds.
Be so scary. Chasing a rabbit that's got

(36:30):
sausages. And.
They had muzzles on them, yeah, But I was still yeah.
It was terrifying. It was terrifying.
I bet you'd never run so far. 'Cause they gained on me.
I actually, that was back when Iwas a bit younger and thought I
was quite quick. And so I actually thought might
I might actually be able to outrun them.

(36:52):
This is the sort of stuff that goes through Mama.
There was a time we went to the park just around the corner from
our place because Jordan had said, I said something about
something about running. And I said, God, the day when
the day when you can run faster than me will be a very sad day.
And he went, sure, I could already beat you.
And I went get in the car and wewent straight down to the park

(37:16):
and he absolutely, yeah, smashedme.
And it hurt. It really did 'cause I honestly
100% thought at that point I wasstill super fit at that point.
I don't think I would have been able to beat my kids in a
running race since they were maybe 5-6.
Right. I started running because of

(37:37):
tearing, because he got injured, and then he needed to start
training and he needed a training partner.
Like, yeah, buddy, I'll go for arun with you.
No worries. Yeah.
Quietly thinking, yeah, I can still run.
It's totally, sort of. We went, thank God.
We went to the, like, Adcock Park and we're doing laps rather
than going somewhere that was like a stretch.
And we had to run back because Igot halfway around the Oval and

(37:58):
nearly died, like I couldn't keep up for anything.
So yeah, so that's what got me starting to learn to run.
You've got me questioning now atwhat age that Jordan would have
been able to beat me because because I was shocked then, but
fast. It might have actually been
earlier than I. Think Tyran was about 12 when I
started running with him. Yeah, and he would lap me easy

(38:22):
more than twice. See, but I still, I still think
I'm fast, feel like I could beatyou in a race.
Oh, you're 100% good. I'm the slowest runner.
I can't tell you how happy I am that you said that, because if
you'd say. What an any legs?
Yeah wait for me of that little legs you say I could running
with people and I'm gonna take like 4 steps for there too.
I'm like, wait. But I 100% guarantee you that if

(38:46):
you had said, oh, I don't know, I reckon I could be.
No, it would have been on like Iwould have challenged you.
Yeah. And and that also would have I.
Do have my running gear in the car so you know.
What do you run like that? I remember talking to Gina on
air when she she'd say that she she'd like go for a ride also
and then I saw her running on foot.
I have a story about this. About Gina.

(39:07):
No about me. I thought, I thought, well, is
Gina's running? Famous.
See it now though. It's it's almost, she's almost
just like jogging on the spot. It's a real it's a just the
really small steps. I'm really.
Casual. What do you?
What do you do? We want to get somewhere or.
You gotta have like forward propulsion as well.
My my running stories that I was, I went for a run after work

(39:30):
one day. So I took one of the boys to
training and I forgot to bring my running shirt.
So I was just still had my work shirt on from where we had the
cupcake shop. And people recognize like the
big local in the back. And somebody called me and I
stopped running and they're like, are you OK?
And I'm like, what? They're like, I saw you running.
Are you trying to run away from someone like Mark?
This is pretty exercise. I'm just going for a run.

(39:52):
She's like, oh, I thought you were trying to escape something.
And I'm like, what? What do I look like when I?
That's that's the question. She's seen your, she's seen you
running, she's seen your face and gone.
Oh my God, what's? Wrong.
Well, you're in trouble. It's one of those things that's
gone. If you see me running, run.
Too. Ohh I do love those Frank things

(40:13):
as well. Like when, yeah, people just
like look over in a direction and start running and everyone
else starts running and the lookwhat's going on.
We need to wrap up because I've got to go and deliver the pod
vans. I mean pod vans got like 3
appearances to do over the next three weekends.
That's so cool. King Cup of Mitre 10 is tomorrow
morning, which will be gone by the time this goes up.

(40:33):
And then there's the farmers markets.
Yeah, I'm super excited about that one at.
The showground and then the following one haven't even
talked about this, actually, Aaron Affair are doing a
Christmas markets and fair thingand it's on Saturday, the 22nd
of November. And the pod van is actually
going to be, you know, the hive.Yes, down the escalators down in
there. Yeah, the pod van's gonna be
parked up in there. So cool.

(40:54):
And I'm there for the day. I'm seeing the day.
There's a whole bunch of performances and schools and
singing and dancing and, and a whole bunch of markets and
things all set up down there so.Yeah, awesome.
Oh, that's so exciting. I'll definitely be coming down
to that. That's so cool.
When this comes out on Spotify and wherever you're listening to
this right now, we are one week away from these new farmers

(41:16):
markets, which are called Central Coast Farmers markets.
Yes, I think that's out now. It is, yeah.
Yeah. They got a Facebook page and
everything. And there's a competition
running on the socials to win some of the goodness from the
markets. I'm not even sure I've been to
the farmers markets. I haven't been.
Oh, you have to. You need to.
Picture for me, yeah. It's like most sort of farmers
markets, but this one it's goingto be amped up a little bit.

(41:39):
So the the way that they're trying to do it is make it so
that it's like a mini event every, every Sunday.
So it's not just like average farmers market.
So we want to make it. I don't even know what the
average farmers market's like because I was picturing all food
trucks and stuff that you get atmost events but it's not.
Really that it's more profitable.
So it's your fruit and veg suppliers, It's your meat like

(42:01):
local meat. Not just like whatever meat,
it's like local. A lot of it's organic.
It's direct from the farm. Like you.
You're not, there's no middle man.
You're dealing with the farmer or like with the, you know, the
person who bakes the bread or who.
Yes. So there's all sorts of
different things. There are like a few different
little things. There might be.
I know there was one that has like dog treats and stuff.

(42:21):
So yeah, kind of thing. And cool soaps.
And there's always coffee. Yeah, those kind of things, you
get it a lot. Of all that sort of things, yes,
yeah, all that kind of thing. But this one, they're kind of
gonna amp it up to make it so that you'll have like a kids
zone with activities for kids and make it more like a fair as
well as a market so that it's anevent.
It's something that people want to come along to and have fun.

(42:42):
And yes, you can get all your, your produce, new groceries and
all that sort of thing for the week, but it's also a fun thing
and an event to go to and enjoy and, and be a part of over
weekend. And we wanna grow that
community. I think that's just so important
for a place like the Central Coast.
Cause yeah, we're a city, but like in Gosford we're a city or
we're trying to build it as a city.
There goes my councillor hat. We're building this city and

(43:05):
this community, but we've also got that like old school, you
know, nice little community feeland that's what we want at the
market. And the stuff we were talking
about just before as well about that thing behind when you know,
the people behind these small businesses, like the people that
are actually at these stands, these stalls or whatever, it's,
it's their stuff that they've brought from.
The honey, they're, they're beeslike they're the beekeeper who

(43:27):
goes and collects the honey and bottles it so.
Who's that Lady you posted aboutrecently?
What did she do? Grandma Bees?
Is that the one? Yeah, had a mental blank on her
name. Was it a honey 1 honey?
Yeah, she was the honey one, Yeah.
But she does other things as well like relishes and chutneys
and and that kind of thing. From from what I know, she
hasn't been at the markets for awhile, so I haven't seen her
when I've been, but she's back. So everybody's very excited

(43:50):
about that. But yeah, there's a lot of
people who haven't been at the markets for a while who are
going to come back as well. So there'll be some old faces,
there's going to be some new ones.
I think there's like about 20 extra providers that are going
to be at the market as well on top.
How many? Are there like?
They're actually struggling for space.
They're like mapping it out at the moment to see where we're
going to put all these extra stalls because there's that much

(44:11):
interest in it. But it's, yeah, it's pumping.
And like the guys from Peach Ridge Farms, like their produce
is, is one of the stars of the show.
So yeah, they're amazing. Is his name Pete?
I think so, yes. The guy that owns his name's
Pete and he's from Pete's Ridge. Is he the Pete of Pete's Ridge?
Does he have a Ridge Met him? I hope so because it's just so

(44:31):
cool and I don't know if it's just my brain being my brain and
getting everything confused, butI'm pretty sure maybe.
His name's not Pete. It's.
Probably from Pete's Ridge, it'sprobably.
Rob, are you Pete? No.
Well, it's not all Pete's, mate. You should be Yeah, yeah, that's
right. Confusing me.
But the egg guys are there and they have like these you could
buy packets and pretty much everyone in it is a double yoga.

(44:51):
Like they're the the biggest eggs you've ever seen in your
life. OK.
Like it's really cool to. The supermarkets.
Yeah, and it tastes different. Like I think, 'cause I grew up
on a farm and I've grown up withlike home grown, organic,
beautiful produce. Oh, it's like going to a
strawberry farm, picking your own strawberries and you're
eating them there and thing going, Oh my God.
Taste, the freshers even smells different Yeah it hasn't been in
cold storage. It's like gone from the plant to

(45:14):
your home, like straight away, yeah.
It's funny sometimes when you look at things like that, like
like fruit or whatever, and thenyou look at where it's come
from. Yeah.
And it's like Ecuador or something like that.
And you? Go cold storage for the last 18
months and no wonder it tastes like cardboard.
How did you get it? I presume you picked this
yesterday and then how did you get it here so quickly?
No. No, no.
And it like not. Really 18 months, they don't do

(45:36):
it like. I don't know, but I would just.
Throwing random numbers out. Well, I I would assume it's for
a fairly long time. I know that fruit, some can last
a very long time. I don't know times, but I grew
up on a fruit farm. So like for me, some of my first
memories are eating hot fruit off a tree.
So then I go and eat this rubbish that you get from some

(45:57):
places and you're like, that's. Not food.
And it's sad that some people haven't experienced real food.
So I'm I'm. Really looking forward to going.
Food. Yeah, I wasn't that fast.
I'm not a yeah, a market especially, yeah, things like

Ruthie's Table 4

Ruthie's Table 4

For more than 30 years The River Cafe in London, has been the home-from-home of artists, architects, designers, actors, collectors, writers, activists, and politicians. Michael Caine, Glenn Close, JJ Abrams, Steve McQueen, Victoria and David Beckham, and Lily Allen, are just some of the people who love to call The River Cafe home. On River Cafe Table 4, Rogers sits down with her customers—who have become friends—to talk about food memories. Table 4 explores how food impacts every aspect of our lives. “Foods is politics, food is cultural, food is how you express love, food is about your heritage, it defines who you and who you want to be,” says Rogers. Each week, Rogers invites her guest to reminisce about family suppers and first dates, what they cook, how they eat when performing, the restaurants they choose, and what food they seek when they need comfort. And to punctuate each episode of Table 4, guests such as Ralph Fiennes, Emily Blunt, and Alfonso Cuarón, read their favourite recipe from one of the best-selling River Cafe cookbooks. Table 4 itself, is situated near The River Cafe’s open kitchen, close to the bright pink wood-fired oven and next to the glossy yellow pass, where Ruthie oversees the restaurant. You are invited to take a seat at this intimate table and join the conversation.
