Rani was adopted from Sri Lanka and only found out her real birth year (but still not the date!) after she Googled her biological name and found her sister who had been searching for her. We also hear from her daughter who has some terrifyingly funny sleepwalking stories and meet someone with a truly freaky thumb talent!

(00:04):
With Robin, Howdy seems to be mynew greeting.
This has been since episode 50 into the new decade you see with
Robin. You know, like you do with
birthdays. Each decade's different podcast
with Rabbit. Once we hit episode 60, I'll
start doing it in different languages.

(00:25):
I think that's where we'll go for the next time.
We are rapidly approaching episode 60.
Was that noise? Did I just get an e-mail?
That's not great timing, Repco. Wait, they got a sale on?
All right, Now's not the time tobe looking at that.
So welcome in. Yeah.
Listen, if you don't know what this is, I'll record this
podcast from within side. Oh, my God.
Another e-mail. What's turbo scribe?

(00:48):
Man, I've been signing up for way too much stuff lately in my
inbox. Like I feel really popular and
I'm getting emails all the time, but it's generally just
Woolworths with their everyday rewards and I have to click on
it and boost my points and stuffand I'm too busy to be doing
that stuff. So we do this podcast from
within a 1967 retro caravan thatI gutted and built a podcasting

(01:12):
studio inside of. And what you're going to hear in
this one, This is Part 3 of the 50th episode.
So it was 50 guests in 50 minutes.
That was the plan. No, it ended up going for hours
and hours. And so we've broken it up into 4
episodes. Part 3 now, AKA episode 52.
My goodness. And the stories that are on the

(01:33):
way in this one tell you about some of them in just a second.
First off, a quick get out of the Patreon members at
patreon.com/pod Van. You can support the podcast
going forward and we can keep itgoing long term.
There's all behind the scenes videos and you can find out
about something new that's just launched in the Patreon page.
It's called Pod Van Postcards and you bet it's got a Jingle.

(01:55):
These are the Pod Van Postcards stories from.
The road. From the road, Oh man, I have so
many stories from the road and that is where they are being
told in that spin off podcast, which is happening in the
Patreon page. You can find out more at
patreon.com/pod Van. All right, coming up in this

(02:18):
episode, we'll kick off meeting a super snuggly assistants dog
in training. We'll meet a lady with some very
interesting talents. Who knew thumbs could do that?
We'll chat to Rani about the fact that she does not know her
own birthday, 8, what her daughter is a sleepwalker and
has a couple of hilarious stories, and Jen tells us about
when she got stuck in a wombat hole.
Oh man, there's so many good stories coming up in this one.

(02:41):
Sit back, relax and enjoy. Guest #30.
Come on. Good.
Yeah. Did you say she's an assistance
dog? Yeah, in training.
You're not your regular looking assistance dog.
I want to put one on Harley Doggerson.
She's not qualified at all or anything.
Just means. Means I could take her into the

(03:03):
shop, shipping and stuff. Yeah, you could easily do it.
Really. Yeah.
That dog I can. Send you info we'll.
Send you info. Yeah.
Oh, my goodness. You are a snuggler.
Well, Andrew's just come in and you got a birthday phone call
the other night. I did on you're out having
pizza. We were.
And I'll tell you what, I was very close to coming down and

(03:23):
just rolling into the the restaurant.
That would have made everyone atthe restaurant be like, what?
What is going on now? I will also ask what is going on
with this dog in my lap? She is an assistant's dog in
training. How does that work in training?
It's already your dog. Yeah, but she's getting yeah.
You go through all of the steps to train her and become an
assistant's dog. She's got a lovely nature.

(03:45):
She'll feel when you need touch and she'll come up and sit on
your chest and all that sort of stuff.
Yeah, there you go. She's starting to dig in, dog.
Goes to the vest. Do I have a question to be Oh
great. This, this says what's the
strangest situation you've ever found yourself to be in?
Yeah. Is it this?
So it has to be this 100%, you know?

(04:08):
That's funny. You know, getting to sit face to
face with you for the first timeever.
Yeah. Listening to you on the radio
for years. Yeah.
You know, And, you know, now being able to put a face to a
name and. Yeah, it's interesting, you
know, And I couldn't think of it, you know, And probably even
taxi driving would be up there, too.
Oh. Yeah, definitely.

(04:29):
Oh, you'd meet some. Interesting.
Everyone I meet and because I'm in my environment, yeah, I don't
get that anxiety. Oh yeah, all that sort of stuff.
Where is here? You know, I'm, I've walked past
about 15 times. Are you kidding?
Yeah. No hands on like I walked past
and I'm like I'll go and then someone Dobbs me in.
Good on you for doing it man. I have a few people down here.

(04:51):
This it's what am I liking a magnet for anxious people or
something? The hell or something?
Well, I I think because when youcame out on the air and said,
you know, that, you know what you said on on that episode and
anything like that on the radio,I think it opened up a lot of
people and said, hang on a minute.
Someone Like You, Rabbit. Yeah, who's always on friendly

(05:12):
and, and, you know, all that sort of stuff can have it.
It's about time I came out with it.
Yeah. And all that sort of stuff.
And that was, that was the hardest, you know.
But it is amazing to see. Yeah, I keep saying this thing.
You don't know what anyone's going through to not to see you
now and to be chatting to you and then to hear that you walked
back and forth and you would, you know, nervous about coming

(05:33):
over or whatever. You just who would know that?
No, that's right. You know, and, and then also
from my side of it, why it's just like, could there be a more
inviting environment? Yeah, well.
Maybe if the coffee machine works, but we won't tell Julie.
Oh, the coffee machine. One day.
One day. One day.
Yeah. Hey, thank you so much for

(05:53):
coming around. Thank you.
The dog stays, I'm afraid. Sorry, guys.
I'm sorry. The dog.
The dog stays with me. This will be fun.
It's guest 31. Oh, hello.
OK, one of the browsers. Yeah, this is great.
Sarah's just jumped in. What did you say?
1 of the browse girls. Yeah, so browse events who run
long teddy markets. Right, Yeah, that makes more

(06:15):
sense that it's browse events, not.
Yeah. Yeah.
Well done. Excellent.
I thought you were just like with browse on there.
I don't think you just just. I'm just browsing.
Thanks. Don't ask me if I'm don't.
Ask me, I just wear the vest. I'm just browsing.
I love the your. The question I have to ask you
is what's a weird talent you have?
And apparently you weren't telling people out there.
OK, I I've got 2. Go on.

(06:36):
So the first one I can put my thumb behind my knuckles on both
hands. Hang on a second.
On both hands. Jordan, look, look at this.
Yeah, I was just saying how goodis it?
Push it there, But I didn't knowyou could do it.

(06:57):
I'm surrounded by freaks. And I can touch my nose with my
tongue. Did you guys know about these
talents and you still hired her?Yeah, someone's gotta be weird
and wonderful. It's like an Elephant Man,
really. Wow, but with doing that with

(07:18):
your thumb. Oh, I've never tried it.
Let me just. Oh, that hurt.
So you can put your thumb behindyour index finger.
Yeah, right behind there. Just.
Sits there. It stays there.
Do whatever. What about the rest of you,
Jack? What about the rest of your
joints? Do you pop arms out and do no.
I can't do any of that really. It's.
Just the. Thumb.
It's just my thumb and the. Tongue and the and the tongue

(07:39):
thing, yeah, wow, those people that can like tie the lolly
snake with a tongue with their tongue and yeah, yeah.
OK, that's OK. That's impressive.
Yes, my husband. How much do you say I mean?
I wasn't gonna say, you know, I'll just pause, let you fill
the gap. Guests 32 and 33 With so many

(07:59):
stories for you and me, how manynumbers are?
You up to oh OK you're across things are you know what's going
on so wait when did you so you've only just found found out
about this now or no no oh you know all across yeah you're.
Across the following, you see, it's like you were OnStar when
you left us. We were.
I did not leave you when you left us.

(08:19):
Wasn't my choice. We would.
Devastate it because you kept that morning beautiful.
Like love. We've been listening to you
forever. Yeah, you can go.
OK. But do I know you guys?
Ronnie. Oh, you're Ronnie, Ronnie, but
you're famous. Jordan, you've talked to her,
OnStar Jordan. And we've met you at the markets

(08:40):
a lot. What markets?
Like all the markets all. The things she used to do for
Star FM, we were always there. We'd.
Be like, it's Rabbit. We gotta go see Rabbit.
And Julie, sorry, we were mainlythere for Julie when she.
Excuse me, there's no need to say mainly there for Julie you
can go and also Julie. He left us too, so, but we
understand, yeah. And then I love everything.
Everyone's just abandoning you. It's not our choices.

(09:01):
No, not fair for you either. But that was cranky for you.
Cranky. For me, Well, thank you.
They're lost. OK, Right.
So yes, I have seen your name pop up on stuff.
And do we have a question for you?
No, no, you skip. You just jumped.
All of that, yeah. So you can ask me the one
question you don't ask a woman is how old.
But you can ask me that. Okay.

(09:22):
There's a story behind it, Hang.On a second there's someone
taking a photo outside and they're up by the window and I'm
going to photo bomb it. So hey, wait till you have a
look back at that photo. I don't know if I'll come out
'cause I think the windows are like tinted a bit tinted, yeah.
But so apparently I can ask you the question that you do not ask

(09:45):
a woman, which is how old are you?
I have a biological age and a legal age.
Ohh born on the 29th of February.
No. Hang on a second.
So I was adopted and my adoptionpapers say the 8th of December
1979. A roundabout in brackets.
A roundabout. A roundabout.
Okay, so I was adopted from Sri Lanka recently.

(10:07):
In about last five years I have found my biological sister, so
she's told me I wasn't born in 1979, I was born in 1980.
I lost a year. Oh wow.
Yeah, but do you know the date? No, they still don't know that.
Like there's you. Don't know.
Because I was born in third world country, they didn't do
that kind of thing and my mum only bought the spokes in Lee,

(10:29):
so they were trying to communicate with her.
Yeah. And she just.
Smiled about and he spoke. What?
Singhalese. Singhalese.
I've never heard what? Is that Sri Lankan?
Sri Lankan is the the languages.Singhalese.
Singhalese. Yep.
Huh. I've never heard I I don't think
I've ever heard that before. As far as like that is what the
language? Is everyone thinks we're India
because it's a little teardrop at the very bottom of India is

(10:52):
these tiny little islands. Yeah.
And it's Sri Lanka. Wow.
Used to called Salon. I mean the I'm sorry, what it?
Used to be called Salon. Really.
Where's Salon tea comes from? I don't know, Celante, someone
else that would go oh. Yes.
Celante, obviously, that's whereit originally came from.
Yeah. Wait.
So jeez. Another one as far as a

(11:13):
question. Someone to lead into you, into
you with this. Have you made anyone else before
that doesn't know their date of birth?
No. Right.
I mean, you can. That's just as a statement.
You can just go. I don't know my date of birth.
Yeah. Wow.
Wait, so you didn't know you were born on the A?
No, they just gave it was. That's why it says a roundabout

(11:34):
on my adoption papers. Is this your daughter?
Yes it is and I. Didn't even know that.
Random person sitting next to you.
Yeah. This is like a counselling
session. We're gonna get into how Mum
feels about not knowing her birthday.
I. Actually love it.
I think if I was, if I found outbefore I was 18, I would have
been devastated. But now I'm I'm in my 40s I'm
quite happy to lose 12 months. That's great.

(11:56):
But wait, now we go back to you.So you found your biological
sister? Yep.
How? So I you know, everyone back in
the day, if you, you know 5-10 years ago, people used to Google
their name. So I decided to Google Google my
original name. They still.
Do that. Yeah, they still do.
Yeah. But they do it now just to find
out how famous they are on TikTok and.

(12:18):
Back then it was just Am I on there?
Am I? Yeah.
Am I on there? Do you like it?
So I googled my my biological name and I found that she was
looking for me. What?
So I was one of seven kids, but my mum ended up having
psychological break, so my dad gave me away.

(12:39):
And so she actually raised me for the 1st 12 months of my life
and so she never got over it. So she learnt English, yeah, and
was searching for me her entire life.
Oh wow, and then you by Googlingyour own name, randomly found
that this your sister was looking.
In the Netherlands. She lives in the Netherlands,

(12:59):
Yeah. Have you met any of the other
kids? I haven't actually.
Been. No, when I found her, I was
planning on like we communicate a bit over Facebook and things
like that and Messenger and thenI was planning on going over and
meeting my biological family. But then we hit COVID and then
we're still getting back into normal routine.
So just. To it yet?
I mean, do you want to? Does it make any difference to

(13:20):
you to meet your siblings now? I think it'd do something for
them because back in the day when I was adopted, they thought
I was getting adopted. And because my family's white.
Oh, so they thought I was getting adopted as a slave or as
a, you know, to be a maid for them.
Oh, right. So they were really concerned
about what I was doing. Oh, where you gone?

(13:41):
Whatever. Well, whatever happened to you?
And so when I found her, I was like, Nah, I had amazing life.
I have a great family, been loved as much.
They might find you now and footage of you in the back of
this caravan going Oh no in. A in there with a strange man.
They got it doing, I told you. Never get it in the power.
Strange man. Oh wow.

(14:02):
You know, the whole thing with this podcast, I've said it a
bunch of times, is that I believe everyone has a story.
You don't know what it is in in looking at somebody, but even
your daughter doesn't know. Yeah, the year, but I didn't
realise that they didn't know the day.
I just thought, well, that was. Yeah.
How much of the rest of this didyou know though of the.
Yeah. Yeah.
OK. Yeah.

(14:23):
That's really interesting. Yeah.
Story. Yeah.
Pretty cool. Yeah.
It's. A very interesting.
Story that is as good as that. You don't?
Yeah. You're just born here, have
lived here, know all of your family.
Yep, That's pretty boring. Well, I've thought about the
fact that I'm not actually related to my cousins.
Oh yeah. Because she's adopted, so.
Oh yeah. That Oh yeah.

(14:44):
OK, Yeah. Blood, but family is what you
make it. Exactly.
The only point where the blood match sort of thing comes into
it as to whether you can have one of their kidneys or
something. Yeah.
Should I just get the wind up? I just got the wind up.
Oh, she has a story about. Excellent.
Quickly tell your story. What's your story I.
Sleepwalk and talk. Excellent.

(15:05):
And it's very exciting are the things that happen.
But I have to warn my friends about it if we have sleepovers.
Uh huh. Because like one time at camp I
warned them, but it was still a bit of a shock to them.
I went over to my friend and I said oh what a pretty darling.
And I started. Fatting in her head.

(15:26):
And she was, too. Wrong with time.
And you're asleep at the time. I didn't know that.
Was a pretty darling. Oh my God, that's terrifying.
Yeah, but it was even more terrifying when I stayed, when
my cousin stayed over at our house and apparently I woke up
and I sat on my chair and I started staring at her and she
was like Jordan. Oh wow then.

(15:48):
I she was like, you're acting like you're possessed.
And then I ended up throwing a pillow at her.
You need like pajamas. That's if they have a disclaimer
on the front of them or something.
If I'm doing weird stuff, I'm asleep.
I'm not responsible. Exactly.
Hey, thanks for jumping in guys. That's alright, thanks for
having. US.

Ruthie's Table 4

Ruthie's Table 4

For more than 30 years The River Cafe in London, has been the home-from-home of artists, architects, designers, actors, collectors, writers, activists, and politicians. Michael Caine, Glenn Close, JJ Abrams, Steve McQueen, Victoria and David Beckham, and Lily Allen, are just some of the people who love to call The River Cafe home. On River Cafe Table 4, Rogers sits down with her customers—who have become friends—to talk about food memories. Table 4 explores how food impacts every aspect of our lives. “Foods is politics, food is cultural, food is how you express love, food is about your heritage, it defines who you and who you want to be,” says Rogers. Each week, Rogers invites her guest to reminisce about family suppers and first dates, what they cook, how they eat when performing, the restaurants they choose, and what food they seek when they need comfort. And to punctuate each episode of Table 4, guests such as Ralph Fiennes, Emily Blunt, and Alfonso Cuarón, read their favourite recipe from one of the best-selling River Cafe cookbooks. Table 4 itself, is situated near The River Cafe’s open kitchen, close to the bright pink wood-fired oven and next to the glossy yellow pass, where Ruthie oversees the restaurant. You are invited to take a seat at this intimate table and join the conversation.
