(00:05):
Guess. 43 and 44 Oscar's coming.Oscar's come all the way from WA
just for this. Yes, just for this.
Wow, Yeah, thank you. Thanks for having me.
It's good to. You're able to coordinate your
flights to be here on time for it and everything.
That's great. What do you do for a job?
Yeah, great. So I currently do many things
for a job, so I'm 18. Yeah, I started off 2 years ago

(00:28):
running my own saxophone business during saxophone
tutoring from my just from my home.
Yeah, because I wanted to do something during school and
wanted to get a bunch of. Hang on lilies faces, you are
making this up. Making this up.
No, no, no. This is did.
You not know. This no, no ohh, this is this is
real? Yeah, yeah.
So I I taught saxophone for two years or I'd done saxophone in
school for many years and then Istarted teaching it and I kind

(00:50):
of wanted to do singing teaching, but I thought I wasn't
good enough. So I was like, what am I good
enough at? So I did saxophone tutoring and
then I sort of had to bum the business off 'cause I was doing
it out of my house and obviouslyI was going to move to Perth, so
I had to get rid of that. So then moved to Perth, started
doing uni at Perth, doing it with Lily.
That's how we know each other. Uh huh.
This is the first I'm hearing about the saxophone thing.
Yeah, that's pretty cool. That's pretty cool Saxophone.

(01:12):
Yeah, yeah, that's it. Yeah.
So I currently work just as a bartender and usher at the local
theatre for the time being, and I just put in a job application
for another place, you know, youknow, the Bowling Club opposite
the village. I do not know the Bowling Club,
but now I know that there is a there's a, there's a village.
Yeah, the lawn bowls. Lawn bowls lawn.
Bowls, isn't it? Where we live?
There's the. Lawn bowls like right opposite
where we live anyway, so they'rehirings.

(01:33):
But apart from like those two like boring jobs, I also running
a tutoring business with a few friends back home.
Yeah, just racking them off like123.
How well do you 2 know each other?
Not really. Not really.
They go, wait, what? You know anything about any of
this stuff? The. 1st, I'm finding about all

(01:54):
of this, we are acquaintances from Perth and then this one's
just run down all the way to thecoast because I said, hey, fun
Jenny, markets are on. Yeah, pretty cool.
But did you 2 come over from WA?Yeah, to get all right.
So yeah, well, I'm originally from Sydney, I've lived in
Sydney my whole life, right? And I wanted to do uni and WA
and then why I wanna do musical theatre.
So singing and dancing and performing.

(02:15):
And that's sort of like the elite spot in Australia.
If you get in, is it? Yes, they only have the.
WA 1 Is that why you're there aswell?
I'm doing, I'm doing a diploma of acting.
I'm not. I'm not singing and dancing.
I'm just talking. But you're a.
Singer. Yes, I am, I think.
Greatly. Sing Yeah.
She's good. Greatly.
Oh, she's amazing. Not that I'd stalked her
Instagram. She's.

(02:35):
Going to sing a song in just a moment and.
Oh, of course, yeah, we preparedher.
I have my whole band waiting. That's it.
Yeah, but so we. Had many mutual friends because
she did a thing called School Spectacular.
It's it's pretty cool. You get primary school kids,
high school kids, all sorts of public school kids.
Is it like in a Stedford? Anything.
It's like if you know Eurovision, yeah, it's almost

(02:56):
that. Energy, really.
It's a celebration. It's not a competition.
Yeah, it's not a competition. There's no first second for
everyone's first, you know, and they.
Have it in the kudos bank and you know, you can audition to
sing on the mainstage and then they have thousands and
thousands of dances and choir and but it's.
Yeah, it's only for public school kids, right?
There's one such a private school because I was entitled
and. Good to batch on the.

(03:17):
Private. School kids missed out on
something. Yeah, we did miss out.
One of my biggest regrets in life was not doing the school
spectacular, going to a public school for one year just to bum
it off. Just to be able to get into the
school spectacular, that's the only thing.
Yeah, that's funny. So A.

(03:37):
Bunch of my singing school kids from my singing school did it.
And then I went to watch every year and went, Oh yeah, you
know, whoever, 'cause it's kudosback.
Oh yeah, of course I know. This one was singing UPS there
on stage, didn't it? And then like 2 weeks ago she
was like, you knew I did this and I was like, Oh yeah, I did.
And then we had all You know this person, you know this
person, you know this. Person, of course, yeah.
We went all the way to Perth to meet each other when we could

(03:59):
have just like been. Yeah, I met here, probably were
in the same room. About the saxophone beforehand,
if that was the case. Yeah, yeah.
Yeah, I've sort of kept that to myself a bit because, you know,
you might just, you might just come out at a, you know, a fun
moment, you know? Oh, yeah.
Well, you just suddenly there's a saxophone sitting in the
corner of the room. You're like, yeah, can I have a
go on that? Yeah.
And. Just whips out a solo and then

(04:20):
everyone's like, whoa, we can dothat.
Yeah. The knee stuff though, but to be
fair though, that's that's what pops off on Instagram so you
don't know anyway. So what are you out about?
I also love photography. So I take head shots for people

(04:41):
and I do like, you know, landscape photography.
Do you know what this feels liketo me, It's like if you ever
seen what's the name of the movie, it's got Leonardo
DiCaprio in it. He's a con man.
Yeah. That's why I feel like I'm gonna
find out that everything you've said is a lie.
It's like you, you started off like I'm 18 and I've done this

(05:03):
and this and this and this and this and.
Nothing I I run a podcast in a alot.
Jenny, Yeah. It's just a stall over there.
You get to that point and I go hang on a second.
Now he's saying it's me, I. Think the biggest thing is that
I'm really young and I'm just sort of putting my finger in a
few pies and then whatever succeeds goes well and then
whatever falls to the ground falls to the ground.

(05:25):
Are out, man. Yeah.
It's getting on a wall. Spaghetti on a wall.
Literally. Lots of creative things.
Some things work, some things don't.
But yeah. I love it.
I love that there's places for people like you guys, like
creative people. Yeah.
To go. It's banging, yeah.
It just needs money. The day if if there's money on
the table. You've chosen a creative path in
life, so there'll be no money. Yeah, I'm fact.
You'll have joy. Ohh.

(05:46):
Lots of joy. Yeah, Lots of joy and
friendships and camaraderie. That's it, right?
Sure. I mean, there's gonna be 20 of
you live in the in the apartmenttogether anyway.
So, but at least saxophone musicso.
And where are we? So we're gonna see you on like
movies and stuff or something. Yeah, yeah.
No, I'm surprised you haven't been keeping up with my My Red

(06:07):
Carpet fame already. Yeah, well, wait, have.
You done anything like no. She's also got a real good
singing voice, so she could moveinto musical theatre one day.
You never know. Like it's never off.
Yeah, singing and acting. Yeah.
What's the what's the last one you need for the triple threat?
Dancing. Are you a dancer?
That's a no game. Alright, Well, fine.
It's OK to be a double threat, yeah.
It's OK, yeah. It's alright.

(06:28):
Still wanna give us some lessons?
It's alright. Brilliant.
Alright, thank you, guys. Thanks for jumping in.
Thanks so much. Guest 45 And what do you do for
a job? I'm a tarot palmist and
astrologer. Sound like you were figuring
that out as you were going. I'm a.
So much wow. Yeah.
Wait, so you read like, people'spalms and so?

(06:50):
Oh, no. Yeah.
You're gonna want to look at mine, aren't you?
Are you? No, no, no, no, I don't.
Like, I don't just do it becausepeople are in front of me.
OK. How long you been doing that?
Over 35 years. Tell me about some freaky things
you've told people about and then they've come back to you
and said, remember how you said?People losing their jobs, oh
ships, that sort of thing. Really.

(07:11):
Yeah. But I tell you something
freakier. Do it.
I have a crystal ball on my table.
Yeah, and the sun catches it. Yeah, and it burnt my tarot
cards and set them on fire. What I'll.
Tell you what, that's freaky. If someone comes to get there,
like tarot cards read or something and they sit down and

(07:32):
then as they sit down the cards burst into flames and it's just.
About the person I was reading for just about went backwards
off a chair. Wait, there was someone there at
the time and the cards just caught fire?
That is freaky. I'm glad that you figured out it
was from the sun coming through the crystal ball and not just.
Well, I could smell this burning, burning coming from.

(07:53):
And all of a sudden I saw my cards on smoke and.
And that, you know, they're actually flames.
Yeah. Yeah, so The thing is with this
podcast, right, I just, you lookat everybody and you don't know
what their story is, but everyone's got a story,
everyone's got funny stories, everyone's got interesting
stories, what they do for work or whatever.
And and there's mine, and you'vegot plenty more, no doubt.
Plenty more. When the tarot cards burst into

(08:16):
thanks, awesome. Thank you so much.
All right, well, look who it. Is it's guest 40?
6 Hordan. Is it pronounced Hordan?
Hordan. No.
What have you accidentally burntis the question I'm asking, and
for context I'll just say that this is my son I'm speaking to

(08:37):
here. And do I know about this thing
being burnt? Is this you now confessing as to
something that you set fire to in the house I.
Wonder if you know this? Oh.
OK, go on. The answer is myself.
I've accidentally burned myself, which like everyone burns
themselves. Yeah, this was a pretty severe
one because I got a scar for about 5 years.
I don't know if you remember. This.

(08:57):
It's ringing a bell slightly. Yeah.
Something silly that you did. Yeah.
It was year 7 or 8, science class.
Yeah, we were doing an experiment where you had to try
and heat a solar oven. So you had to try and make an
oven and then heat it up using only the sun's energy.
I do know what it is. You know what's crazy?
You don't know the story that was told just before yours.
Is it related? So related.

(09:19):
Oh. My goodness.
So related it's ridiculous. How was this burning happening
and what did you do people? Were using different methods of
trying to heat it. You could only use the sun and
like whatever science experimentas they had and you had to try
and get it hot in the oven or whatever.
And so one group was using, not my group.
I was walking over and seeing what the other groups are doing.
A high pressure solar like magnifying glass.

(09:39):
Yeah, a big tablet that you hold.
And they were just holding it over this like aluminium foil
oven. Yeah.
And I was like, is that really heating it up?
Like it's just a magnifying glass?
I know it can get hot. Yeah.
They said no, no, it's, it's like 100° in there.
And I was like, really? Really.
Possible and they said. There's only one way to find
out. And they said no under the
laser. Like if you put something under
the laser, it gets burned. And I was like, really?

(10:01):
And so I put my hand under it and went.
Yeah. And it and it it.
Burned it. Burned me.
Very, very badly. Yeah.
There was just a solid little dot where I'd held my hand for a
second. Yeah.
And it never went away. Yeah.
I only just recently heard of this.
I don't think you told us about it at the time.
I. Don't think I did alright.
That might be why I don't like science class it.

(10:22):
Could be one of the reasons you injuries.
So the lady that was just in here before you, she does tarot
card reading and stuff. She has a crystal ball sitting
on her desk and the sun from coming through the crystal ball.
Someone else, a lady, was getting a reading and the tarot
cards burst into flames. Oh my goodness.
What does that mean? I doubt.

(10:43):
And that's the thing, right? You just look at that and go,
uh, I have bad news for you. I don't think you need to be an
expert to read that it's pretty.Clear Please welcome guest 47.
Josh has just come in and you have no idea what's going on.
No, I've been corralled. There's like 8 of my friends
standing outside, they're all filming.
Who are these people? Do you even know them?

(11:04):
I know and no, I hate. Them.
No, Yeah, you're trying to get away from them.
Have you come in here as like a safe space?
Yeah, yeah, yeah. I feel better in here.
It's coffee in here. I like the the plants and the
things it's. Yeah, thank you.
And there's only one real one. The rest are all fake because I
kill everything that. Yeah.
Oh, could I try to? Yeah.
Yeah. Big.
Plates are good they they last longer.
Yeah, I think so. Well, they're doing well so far.

(11:26):
Now what's to go? What's the story with all of you
lot rolling through the markets here?
So I'm here with four of my friends from Canada.
Yeah, we met some of my friends, friends that they met in Korea
that are from Australia. So it's like it's a large group.
It's a crazy, it's a wild group.Yeah.
OK. Lovely people though.
And how? But how do you all know each?
Other I know my friends from Canada, from elementary school,

(11:47):
one of them, oh, OK. And then it's like mutuals,
right? And what are you all travelling
around together? We are all travelling around
together, yeah. How many of you 9?
Maybe 1012? I think 12:00.
Yeah. Oh, you didn't bring the other
ones down here. A couple of them had a rough
night. Did they?
Yeah. Yeah.
Well, when in Australia? Yeah.
What is this trip? Are you going around the world
or something or? No, it's just an Australia.

(12:08):
Trip kind of to meet these friends and then kind of to we
wanted to come someplace fire. It's like a grad trip.
Some of us are just graduating. OK, yeah, Graduating what?
Uni, High school. Yeah, OK.
How old do I look? Really old.
OK, yeah. What have you just graduated?
I did medical science in Canada.Far away.

(12:30):
Yeah. OK, so I'm.
I'm aware of Canada, Canada far away.
It's. Like I've never heard.
Of Canada before what a great place to be studying.
Yeah, yeah. Do you?
So you live there? Yeah, I live there.
I do research there right now. What are you working on?
What are you solving? Cancer Research.
I work with like mice and rabbits.
Stop it. Not.

(12:50):
Really. Yeah.
Do you know that's literally my name is Rabbit?
So really. Wow.
It's that's. What you call yourself?
Yeah, yeah, yeah. I like it.
Great. Thank you for testing on my
cousins. You're doing Cancer Research?
Yeah. Wow.
Wait, are you doing lots of other things?
But then that's the one that yousay that and people go whoa.
I mean, it's a buzzword for sure, but that's like, that's my

(13:10):
focus, yeah. Do you see a point where there's
just a straight up like cure or a prevention thing, or what are
you working towards with what you're doing?
It's refining. So what they're doing right now
with cancer in general, at leastin Canada, is they're going back
to existing treatments. And they're trying to make them
better because they're really, like, using, like, brute force,
like radiation, chemo. These are really, like, harsh on

(13:32):
the body. Yeah.
And they're trying to lower the radiation and increase, like
other therapies. It's all like drug cocktails or
like mixed therapies. Oh, wow.
Yeah, OK. So combination therapy is is
getting popular. But there, there must be.
There's obviously work going on somewhere around doing things
differently, like just the, not the radiation chemo thing.

(13:53):
Yeah. What what are some of those
things? And do they?
So we're using ultrasound. Oh, yeah.
Yeah. We're finding like a way to use
ultrasound in carbonate because ultrasound is very tame on the
body. Yeah.
And if you use it in combinationwith radiation therapy, it's
like you can use less radiation.Right.
OK. So that's like the main thing is
like our lives specifically is focusing on making it a little
bit easier on the body. Right.

(14:14):
Yeah. What cool work to be in, Yeah.
To be doing, Yeah, yeah. Are there frustrations though as
you go long that you just you wish it would go?
Faster. Ohh absolutely right.
Working with animals, you gotta we breed them and you gotta wait
for them to kind of grow to maturity before you use them in
experiments. Right.
Yeah, yeah. My day-to-day is feeding mice
until they get big. Yeah, yeah.

(14:35):
That doesn't sound as cool when you say that's what your job is.
Yeah. I feed my still.
They get big, but then we do great things.
Yeah. Yeah.
Oh, well, all the best to you with everything.
Yeah. You didn't know you're gonna end
up in a podcast. Oh, thanks for thanks for
inviting me in. No worries.
Yeah, you'll have to check it out.
This one will be up in a in a few days.
In a couple days, Yeah, check itout.
Yeah. Like the setup?
Awesome. Thanks for coming in.

(14:55):
Thanks so much. Oh, man, we're so close.
These are guests 48 and 49, Maddie and Tiarna.
Tia, how do we? This is my daughter Tiana and my
worker Maddie. Thank you so much for coming
down and helping out today. This is just a friend of Tiana's

(15:16):
who volunteered as tribute to come down.
I definitely didn't make a. Question I've got here for you 2
is what's the weirdest dream you've ever had, Maddie?
It was a really repetitive dreamand I had it many, many times
when I was younger. This means it's gonna come true,
whatever it is. I'm just, I'm gonna say that up
front and then now you tell me what it is.
So like, it was in this really rocky place with all these

(15:38):
hills, and me and my cousin werethere and we were both like, 5
years old. Yeah.
And we were getting chased by these really, really tall
trolls. Yes.
I don't know how to explain it. It's kind of like.
No, you're explaining it perfectly the.
Things out of how we. Big troll guy in the dungeon.
It look like that but even scarier.
Well, you know these things can come true.
Please. Did you just?
Wake up Tiana, your latest dream.

(15:59):
Zombie apocalypse. Do you have zombie dreams?
This was when I was like 6, OK, But like there's always were
like Mickey Mouse and friends, you know, like.
Oh yeah, I get. It yeah, Yep.
So I called up Paw. Patrol.
To come help me out. And they pulled up with like,
the Paw Patrol machine, Yeah, vehicle thing.

(16:19):
To save you from the Mickey Mouse apocalypse.
Uh huh. With laser guns like Laser tag
Paw. Patrol with laser tag guns.
Of course. You say my dreams are weird When
I tell you next time you say that, I'm gonna go.
Oh, yeah. Paw Patrol with laser tag guns.
Here we go. Guests 50 and 51.
Maddie and Eden. I think you're gonna be my last
guests for the day. You know, I've had 50 people in

(16:40):
here today. What?
Well, not all at once. Like one at a time. 2 at a time,
2 at a time if I need to. Yes, look at you 2.
You're both missing a front tooth at the same time.
Yep. Well, do you run into each other
or something? Just run face first into each
other. No, we're.
Both lost down teeth that did. Have a movie laughing.

(17:04):
Oh, yeah, of course you would. Look at you 2.
You laugh at everything. So you've just had your face as
painters. Yeah, yes, yeah.
And I got. My hair sprayed.
Wait, whoa, whoa, whoa. OK, it's a lot to unpack here.
Well, how would you describe yours, Eden?
Mine's a median flower crown. Yeah, it is.
That's exactly what it is. And what is that big sigh all

(17:25):
about? A cheetah.
Yeah, that's a cheetah, but it'slike a rainbow Unicorn cheetah.
Yes, that's cool, man. And then you got some braids in
the hair. Yeah, I was gonna get some of
them. What's so funny?
What's so funny you don't have? Hair.
What? You don't have hair.

(17:48):
I did when the day started. It's gone.
It's. Gone.
Because people like you 2 stressme out and then it all just
falls out. All right, Well, what are you
doing for the rest of the day? This is wait, who are you
carrying? What's this?
This is Dumbo. What's Dumbo doing you just

(18:08):
carry him around with? You.
I buy them here today. Oh great, with your own money
from your job, Yes. What do you do for work?
I do, I go to school. I love that she needed to tell
you that you go to school. You're clearly not that
committed to it. What are you gonna do when you
grow up though? Like, what do you wanna do as a
job? I wanna.
Be a vet. Oh yeah, that's good.
What? Do you wanna be I wanna be a

(18:30):
swimming teacher, a teacher and a chef and a.
I I think 3 jobs is enough. You want a fourth one?
What's the other one? Doctor.
A and a doctor You wanna be a chef and a doctor 2.
More. I got two more and I wanna be a
wiggle. You know, the wiggles.
Yeah, I wanna be one of those and I want to be a firefighter.

(18:52):
You know you only have to do 1 like you don't have to do all of
them. Mind you, times are tough these
days. You might have to do all of
them. You might have to combine them.
You could be a chef, doctor. So while you're working on
people, you make them their lunch.
Yeah, maybe this can work. Then I'm a vet and a
firefighter. Yeah, but you also sing and
dance at the same time. Yeah.

(19:12):
And then that's your wiggle part.
Yeah. Guys, I think this is a great
way to finish my day up. Thank you for coming along.
You. You might get famous after this.
I should get you to sign something for me now, because
you're fucking us. Yeah.

Ruthie's Table 4

Ruthie's Table 4

For more than 30 years The River Cafe in London, has been the home-from-home of artists, architects, designers, actors, collectors, writers, activists, and politicians. Michael Caine, Glenn Close, JJ Abrams, Steve McQueen, Victoria and David Beckham, and Lily Allen, are just some of the people who love to call The River Cafe home. On River Cafe Table 4, Rogers sits down with her customers—who have become friends—to talk about food memories. Table 4 explores how food impacts every aspect of our lives. “Foods is politics, food is cultural, food is how you express love, food is about your heritage, it defines who you and who you want to be,” says Rogers. Each week, Rogers invites her guest to reminisce about family suppers and first dates, what they cook, how they eat when performing, the restaurants they choose, and what food they seek when they need comfort. And to punctuate each episode of Table 4, guests such as Ralph Fiennes, Emily Blunt, and Alfonso Cuarón, read their favourite recipe from one of the best-selling River Cafe cookbooks. Table 4 itself, is situated near The River Cafe’s open kitchen, close to the bright pink wood-fired oven and next to the glossy yellow pass, where Ruthie oversees the restaurant. You are invited to take a seat at this intimate table and join the conversation.
