Time flies.
But now to the content at handToday.
I want to delve into a sayingthat many of us have heard the
(02:02):
grass isn't greener on the otherside, it's greener where you
water it.
This phrase perfectly capturesthe journey of life, the pursuit
of happiness and what it meansto really find contentment in
our own experience.
I really want to explore andunpack what it means to truly
water our own grass, tocultivate our lives and to
(02:26):
embrace the specific and uniquejourney that God has laid out
for each of us individually.
Today's primary scripture comesfrom Galatians, chapter 6,
verses 7 through 9.
Do not be deceived.
God cannot be mocked.
A man reaps what he sows.
Whoever sows to please theflesh from their flesh will reap
(02:46):
destruction.
Whoever sows to please thespirit from the spirit will reap
eternal life.
Let us not become weary indoing good, for at the proper
time we will reap a harvest ifwe do not give up.
This scripture is a powerfulreminder that our lives are like
gardens what we choose to planttoday will determine the
(03:09):
harvest that we will reaptomorrow.
If we focus on nurturing ourown lives, we will see the
fruits of our labor blossom inways that I truly believe will
bring about joy, will bringabout fulfillment and will bring
about purpose.
So, point number one theillusion of comparison.
(03:30):
It's necessary, it's imperative, it's critical to consider the
dangers of comparison.
In 2 Corinthians 10 12, paulwrites we do not dare to
classify or compare ourselveswith some who commend themselves
.
When they measure themselves bythemselves and compare
themselves with themselves, theyare not wise.
(03:53):
You've heard the saying beforethat comparison can be the thief
of joy.
And what an accurate statement,as comparison can lead us to
believe that we are not enough,it can lead us to believe that
we lack what others have, and itcan create a sense of
discontentment if it goesunaddressed.
(04:15):
We scroll through social mediaseeing these carefully curated
images of others lives and westart to believe that their
grass is greener than ours.
Of others' lives and we startto believe that their grass is
greener than ours.
And that's one of the downsidesof this particular advancement
of technology, the downside ofsocial media we only get to see
and edit it an often inflatedview into only the good parts of
(04:39):
a person's life.
We are constantly bombardedwith images and with videos of
people that seem to have it alltogether, that seem to have a
much better life than us, but wereally have no clue what's
going on behind closed doors.
So I just want to remind youthat what you see on the outside
often doesn't reflect the hardwork, the sacrifices and the
(05:03):
faithfulness that others havepoured into their own lives.
When we look at it from thatperspective, when we compare
ourselves to others, we can endup failing to appreciate the
unique calling and the uniquejourney that God has for us.
We fail to appreciate what Godwants to do for us as
individuals, what God wants todo for us as individuals.
God, in his mercy, in his grace, has crafted each of us with a
(05:29):
specific purpose and a plan.
Instead of looking over thefence at your neighbors or at
your friends, we should reallyfocus on our own garden, focus
on our own grass.
Let me ask you a few questionsto reflect upon.
Are you watering yourrelationships with love and
kindness?
Are you nurturing your careerwith dedication and integrity?
(05:52):
Are you cultivating yourspiritual life through prayer
and Bible study?
In other words, what seeds areyou planting and are you
watering your own grass Insteadof looking at somebody else's
grass and oh, their grass is sogreen.
What are you doing to make sureyour grass is green?
(06:12):
Point number two the importanceof nurturing our own lives.
In Matthew 25, jesus tells thefamous parable of the talents.
In this parable, a masterentrusts his servants with
different amounts of talents,and the ones who invest and work
so hard with what they havebeen given are rewarded.
But the servant who buried histalent out of fear loses
(06:36):
everything.
The parable teaches us that weare responsible for what God has
given us.
Friend, let me ask you yetanother question or two.
Are you using your gifts andyour talents wisely?
Are you maximizing the moment?
Are you maximizing this currentseason that you're in?
(06:56):
Are you investing in yourfamily, in your community and in
your spiritual growth?
In other words, what are youdoing with what God has given
you?
What are you doing with whatgod has given you?
Don't worry about keeping upwith the jones.
Tend to what god has given you,be faithful, be content and be
(07:17):
grateful.
I gotta say that one more timebe faithful, be content and be
grateful.
Consider this when you focus oncultivating your own life, you
will begin to see the beautythat you have.
You will start to appreciatethe relationships that you've
built, the work that you haveaccomplished and all the
(07:40):
blessings that God has alreadygiven you.
Looking at someone else's grassand comparing yourself can lead
to jealousy and, if you aren'tcareful, it will blind you to
what God has already graciouslyblessed you with.
In addition to that, let usremember the importance of
perseverance.
Take a look at Colossians,chapter three, verses 23 and 24.
(08:03):
Whatever you do, work with allyour heart as working for the
Lord, not for human masters,since you know that you will
receive an inheritance from theLord as your reward.
It is the Lord Christ that youare serving.
(08:23):
So listen, my friend.
When we put our hearts into ourwork, our relationships, our
spiritual lives, we areultimately serving God, and that
is where true fulfillment lies.
So beware of the illusion ofcomparison and understand the
importance of nurturing your ownlife.
And lastly, point number three,I want to encourage you to plant
(08:45):
seeds of faith as you look atyour grass, as you look at your
gardens.
We must cultivate a spirit ofgratitude and contentment in our
lives.
Instead of envying what othershave, let's celebrate their
blessings.
Start each day by actuallycounting your blessings, both
big and small, and when you dothat, it just will nurture a
(09:08):
heart of gratitude and you willbegin to see the grass that you
have, the grass that you water,is actually green.
The grass, indeed, is greenerwhere you water it.
Water your marriage instead ofcomparing it to others.
Sow those seeds of romance andkindness and love and you will
(09:29):
see your marriage begin toblossom and to flourish.
For example, be willing to putin the work and to take care of
your own grass, your ownrelationships, your own job,
your own home, your own car.
Don't be jealous of what yourneighbor drives.
Don't be jealous of what yourfriend or family member or
church member may drive.
Take care of and keep clean thevehicle that God has given you.
(09:54):
In this season, I was listeningto a podcast and I ran across
this quote that said growth andimprovement comes from investing
the time, the energy, theattention and effort into our
own grass.
Hear this.
We often think that what wedon't have is better than what
(10:14):
we do have, because all we knowis what we have.
So be careful with that.
In Philippians 4, 11 through 13, paul writes I'm not saying
this because I am in need, for Ihave learned to be content in
whatever circumstances.
I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have
plenty.
I have learned the secret ofbeing content in any and every
(10:38):
situation, whether well fed orhungry, whether living in plenty
or in want.
I can do all things through himwho strengthens me.
I can do all things through himwho strengthens me.
These words of the Apostle Paulreminds us that contentment is
a state of mind and it is achoice that we must make every
single day.
When you focus on watering yourown grass, you will find
(11:02):
fulfillment in your unique pathand recognize that God has a
purpose for every season in yourlife.
So, once again, let me say thisthe grass isn't greener on the
other side, it's greener whereyou water it.
Stop looking at, stop comparingyourself to, and stop being
jealous of other people's lives,their marriage, their home,
(11:26):
their clothes, their kids ortheir education, and begin to
focus on and praise God for thethings that he has already given
you, because comparison canlead you to disappointment.
Comparison can lead you to anoverall bad mood, thus stilling
your joy.
I want to encourage you tocommit to watering your own
(11:48):
grass, invest time in yourrelationships, cultivate your
talents, deepen your faith andremember the words of Galatians
6.9.
Let us not become weary indoing good, for at the proper
time we will reap a harvest ifwe do not give up.
This week, this day, I just wantto challenge you to identify at
(12:09):
least just one area of yourlife that needs and needs more
attention.
Maybe it's your relationshipwith a loved one, or your career
, or your spiritual journey.
Water it with love and patienceand faith.
And let us also remember thatgrowth takes time, just as a
garden or deep, green, lushgrass doesn't happen overnight.
(12:32):
Your life is not going totransform in an instant, but
with consistent effort andconsistent care, you want to see
the fruit of your laborblossoming in a beautiful way.
Let's pray, heavenly Father.
We thank you for the gifts thatyou have given us.
Help us to focus on our owngarden, our own grass, and to
(12:53):
water it and to nurture it withcare.
Lord, help us to be goodstewards over what you have
blessed us with.
Teach us to appreciate our ownblessings and to trust your plan
for our lives.
May we find contentment in thejourney that you have set before
us, in Jesus name Amen.
