Stephanie Olson (00:03):
Welcome to resilience in life and
leadership with your host,Stephanie Olson, speaker, author
addictions sexual violence andresilience expert Stephanie
Olson with resilience in lifeand leadership, and I just want
to give huge apologies to youfor being so far behind on the

(00:25):
podcast, it has been anoverwhelming season for me,
which is all good things. So formost of you, if you have been
listening to the podcast, thenyou know that my real world job

(00:46):
is running a nonprofit that doesprevention education on human
trafficking, social media safetyand healthy relationships. And
we have a curriculum fromkindergarten through college age
for youth, and adults of everyarea aspect, every facet of the

(01:08):
community. And so we love toeducate on this topic, because
it is our youth that areactually at risk for human
trafficking. And a lot of peopledon't don't understand that
human trafficking is not aboutkidnapping. It's about building
relationships. And so that'swhat traffickers do. They target

(01:30):
individuals, because ofvulnerabilities, high risk
factors, but that vulnerabilitycould be, hey, I'm on social
media, I posted something kindof stupid. And now, there's
somebody who is going to seethat and use that against me,
and not in a blackmailing way,but use that against me, oh,

(01:50):
gosh, you don't feel good aboutyourself, you look amazing. Let
me tell you, I love you. Youdon't, you don't feel like you
fit in, hey, I will be yourfriend. And so that's what
traffickers are doing. And weneed to know those things. But
more importantly, so do thetargets of trafficking our
youth. And so that's what theset me free project does. We

(02:14):
have a mission to stop humantrafficking before it starts.
And that's really important. Sofor the first time, we are
making sure that schoolsactually have our curriculum in
their hands now, for years, andwe've been doing this for about
seven years, but for years, wehave been the ones going into

(02:37):
the schools, educating, we're inabout currently 400 schools
between Nebraska, Iowa and SouthDakota region, Illinois, and
Kansas. And so we've been veryheavily saturated in the
Midwest. But that was with ourown people educating with our
own curriculum with our ownpeople. Needless to say, that

(02:59):
doesn't help us grow and expandin the way that we absolutely
need to grow and expand. And andwith the changes in schools
after COVID. And some of thethings we've seen teachers
leaving, and it's just been avery difficult time for
families, for teachers, foreducators as a whole. But for

(03:21):
students, too. There's a lot ofbehavioral issues that are
developmentally behind. Andthere are just a lot of things
that our kiddos need on thatresources and on that level. So
for the first time to set mefree project is selling our
curriculum to schools, to get inthe hands of counselors to get

(03:41):
in the hands of social workers, even teachers who can use this
curriculum. And it's a prettymassive curriculum, we have
about 10 separate pieces of theactual full curriculum. So sex
trafficking for middle and highschool, we have healthy
relationships for middle andhigh school. We have we have

(04:04):
social media for middle and highschool. And then we also have
elementary curriculum about notabout trafficking, but about
things like consent, aboutbodily autonomy, about empathy,
about responsibility, and all ofthose things, and absolutely,

(04:27):
about social media, becauseunfortunately, young young
kiddos are accessing socialmedia and one of the things we
always say is, when you haveaccess to the world, the world
has access to you. So that's areally important piece of the
puzzle. So we are getting thecurriculum, all pieces of the

(04:47):
curriculum in the hands ofcounselors, teachers, educators,
so that they can work hand inhand with those students over as
long of a period of Time orshortest period of time as they
are able to do with our supportcompletely throughout that year.

(05:08):
So we provide support withdisclosures we provide, of
course, troubleshooting support, but also, you know, what do I do
with this portion or whatever itmay be, and then the opportunity
to recertify every year. And sothat is what we are providing,
we are so excited, we'reproviding that for schools,
we're providing that foragencies, and anybody who wants

(05:31):
to do this work, which should beevery someone in every
community, because it is soimportant, we are able to
provide the resources and thehelp for you to do that. So
that's what we are all about.
You know, it's, it's important,it's important work. Prevention
has got to be first because ifwe can actually stop human

(05:56):
trafficking before it starts, that's huge. And the beauty of
our curriculum is it doesn'tjust talk about human
trafficking, the foundation isyou have an intrinsic value that
nobody can change. And thatcomes with so many different
levels, human trafficking isjust a symptom of the problem.
Just like drugs, alcohol, whatever it may be. So this

(06:18):
gives our youth the opportunityto understand their incredible
value, their incredible worthand human dignity, and that
everybody else has value, too.
So that's what I have beenworking on. Needless to say, I
have kind of let the podcastSlack. So that's where I bring

(06:42):
you apologies, I appreciate yourpatience, I am so sorry, that I
am behind. But what I'm going tobe doing is dropping podcasts
more frequently, over the nextfew months. So instead of just
every Friday, you'll be gettingtwo to three a week. And

(07:04):
hopefully, we'll catch up. Andwe'll be back on track right
around the time of a littlepodcast break. And then moving
into the second season. Sothat's super exciting. So thank
you for your patience, thank youfor the opportunity to share my
message with you. And whetherthat message be human

(07:27):
trafficking, with youth and withadults of every facet of the
community, or with resilience inyour life, and your leadership
and all of the amazing gueststhat we have on the show who
tell us their story, and whatthey are doing. So check us out
at the set me free project setme free. project.net. So again,
