Unknown (00:03):
Oh, sorry, did I break
your concentration?
Somewhere between science andsuperstition?
sites to show youStrange Aeons. Welcome to
(00:28):
Strange Aeons radio. That's EricMorgan. Hello, that's Vanessa
Williams cadet here. I'm Kellyyoung. Hey, guys, we've been
getting a lot of feedback on thewhole value for value model. And
most of that feedback is I don'tquite understand this value for
value.
(00:49):
So I thought I would kind of tryto explain it with going
forward, letting everybody knowthat this is kind of a work in
progress. And we're still tryingto figure it out to so in my
head, the value for value modelis we are putting out an hour
and 20 minutes of content everyweek, and you are listening to
(01:13):
that. Now, if you get some kindof value out of that, then pay
it back. And that is in any waythat you feel is impactful to
you. Some of you might thinkthis is the greatest thing
you've ever listened to. And Igot to give them money. And
that's great. Hey, thank you.
Some of you might go. This isnot the greatest thing I've ever
(01:34):
listened to Vanessa is kind ofannoying, but
me. I will like and share theirposts.
So so anything like that is it'sjust whatever you want to give
us, give us make it impactful toyou. Yeah, yeah. I mean, there
(01:56):
was a long period of time wheremost of my life, I've had no
money. And so a good way for meto pay it forward to different
people, like the SeattleInternational Film Festival, I
could never afford to go. So Iwould volunteer and do some
editing for them. Or I wouldvolunteer and help them in some
other way. And that meant that Ifelt good about being supportive
(02:19):
of them. And then in return, they would give me a pass or
tickets or whatever it was. Soyou know, for you, that might be
something like, Hey, we're gonnalike retweet. When we post our
episodes, that's awesome. Youmight want to put a big thumbs
up on it, you might have, youknow, several 1000 followers and
you're like, hey, followers, guess what this thing is cool.
(02:40):
That would be amazing. Maybe youjust have your mom, you say,
Hey, Mom, this is cool. That'sgreat. But if there's, you know,
whatever that is for you, ifthat's make sense for you
financially to put money in it,that's great. We love you for
it. But if you are like, Hey, Ijust managed to like blog about
(03:01):
you. And that's the way I knowwhen that'd be amazing. That is
also amazing. So value for valueisn't straight up cash. Right,
Kelly Exactly. Right. But we dohave the most podcasts or should
have a link if you go to thebottom of whatever podcasting
you're looking for. There's alink now we just started using
(03:22):
buy me a coffee, which I changedto buy me a pizza, or you know,
obvious reasons.
I was so happy.
Dammit, so we can so you know, and that could be any amount. It
just works better than PayPal.
He was kind of a pain in thebutt. But this is a better
interface. But again, we're newto this man. We've done this for
what three years now. And we'refinally got some people seem to
(03:44):
really enjoy it. Let's well wejust kept on getting people
saying how can I give you money?
And I was like, Why do I keepputting this off?
And my mom's been freeloading onthis podcast for at least.
I think it's time pay up lady.
Wow.
(04:04):
Wow. I can hear it through thefloorboards. I know. I know.
She'salso for everybody out there.
Keep in mind, no pressure onyou. We're not asking you to
give us money. So if you know oranything really perhaps what you
get out of this is exactly zero.
(04:24):
Background noise and right. Theydon't annoy me enough to
distract me from building myhouse or whatever. So my animals
don't feel lonely when I'm outof the house.
I'm okay with that. Hey, buddy.
Good dog.
Koufax no no P over there.
So yeah, we're still trying tofigure it out. And we'll get it
(04:45):
all solidified at some point.
But hey, thank you so much tothose of you who have donated or
liking and sharing and all ofthat stuff. We got a nice one
from a guy named Brian B. Ididn't know if he wanted me to
say his whole name.
Yeah. Thanks, Brian. You rockLast episode, we did the mixing
magics episode, which I thoughtwas a lot of fun and a listener
on the page. Whitney triple hadbrought up that what I've been
(05:11):
calling mixing magics actuallyhas a name and it is known as
wells law. Why from HG Wells?
Oh, and he basically says thatthere should only be one
fantastic element in a story.
And that nothing remains. Thisis actual quote, nothing remains
interesting where anything mayhappen. And I was like, ah, gee,
(05:31):
you are brilliant. Whitney, thank you so much. She had
brought up as her example ofthat the movie looper, which has
the time travel in it, and thenkilling themselves at the end of
spoiler.
But then also surrounded bytelepaths. And of course, the
(05:54):
rainmakers got the super hightelekinetic powers. And
basically, it just dilutes thatmain story, right? And once she
did that, I was like, I shouldhave picked looper.
Miss opportunity, because thatwas actually a good movie. Oh,
okay. I haven't seen it. But Iguess I don't need to now.
(06:15):
You haven't seen looper now. Itjust didn't it never someone I
wanted to see. But it just neverclocked
it. Well, that makes it moreinteresting. It's so funny
though, that that definition? Itmakes so much sense to me.
Because with looper All Iremember is the main plot. I
don't remember any of the restof the stuff you're talking
about. I know I saw in theater.
I know I liked it. But all thatwashed off my back. Oh, wow.
(06:39):
Well, speaking of good movies, you guys, I saw a very cool
movie, called Jacob's life. Ihave heard good things about
this recently. Barbara Crampton.
And it is kind of a surprise tosay, hey, the new Barbara
Crampton movie is excellent.
Because I don't feel like she'smet a script. She wouldn't be in
(07:03):
for the right amount of money. Alot of work. Yeah, she sure
does. But this one, sheactually, she bought the script,
and had been shopping it aroundfor herself. And, you know, just
got filled it with some amazingpeople whose names I didn't
write down. It is justexcellent. It is a it is about a
a woman who has been kind ofkept down by her, her minister
(07:26):
husband. And she gets turnedinto a vampire and starts living
life a little bigger andrealizing I really like this.
And it. It's not what you thinkbecause they both still love
each other. And they have tofigure out now how to deal with
the fact that she is a creatureof the night and loves being
(07:47):
that. bikes. That sounds likesuch a good metaphor for that
sort of middle age moment.
Absolutely. That's so good. It'slike suddenly, you know, the guy
has to go and get the red sportscar out of nowhere.
I just became a vampire Han. ButI'm I'm, this is who I am. Now.
Take it or leave it. It's a nicechange from the anreise era of
(08:08):
whiny vampires. Like just justjust go into the sun. It's fine.
I really loved it. It's a rentalright now. It's a cheap rental.
I think it's 499. But theshutter logo popped up before it
played. So I have a feeling itwill be showing on shutter
before too long. Oh, that'sawesome. Oh my goodness. Well,
um, I saw a film and I think Itexted you both about it. And I
(08:32):
think you've both even seen it.
The empty man. Oh, yeah. Yes. Idon't even know if we've talked
about this before any capacitywe probably Yeah, but that's the
am 1200 Yeah. David prior. Yeah.
So I had it thrown on and wasready to endure it. What a crazy
(08:53):
film. I I did not if nothingelse. That was the most
unexpected experience that Igot. I was like this is has so
many good elements. to it. Idon't know that. It's like a
really amazing, amazing film.
But it because it's based off ofa graphic novel series. And I
think whenever things go throughthat transition between like
(09:14):
book or comic into film, therecan be a lot of details. I get a
little bit wobbly, but I man Ireally liked that it took the
risks it did. It's a crazy film.
I ended up loving it. It'salmost like three different
films in one and the middle oneI was prepared to hate I was
(09:34):
like, oh boy is going to be somekind of Slender Man story or
something and then it takes anice little twist.
I loved it so much. I went andbought the comics. Oh, and was
horribly disappointed. Oh, themovie is so much better. I
funnily enough I alsoimmediately went out and bought
(09:55):
the first comic because I wantedto know if I'd like it or not. I
don't know how I missed you,too.
Is this or me this? But um,yeah, like I went out and got
the first comic, by the way, um,they stopped printing them. So
on certain websites if you tryto get the one, at least one of
the editions of the comics, it'slike hundreds of dollars. Yeah,
(10:16):
it's stupid. You can get themovie quote unquote edition, and
it's a more affordable price,but it's still 20 something
bucks, which I was like, this iskind of a lot for like, Yeah,
one comic, but that's the onlything that hit me a little bit
is I would have liked to trimdown a little bit. It had some.
And maybe it's just the, the mobI grew up with in the 80s when
(10:38):
it switched to the finalstoryline, Mike, I've seen this
story.
And I was like, but it's good.
It's damn good that there'snothing
nothing. It's not like ZackSnyder. I'm Jesus. lop off two
hours out of your damn movie.
This is like maybe 10 or 15minutes totally hanging it up.
But well, except the moviescalled the empty man. And you
(11:00):
don't figure out what that meansuntil the third act right? Yeah,
so I feel Yeah, exactly. There'sso much good setup. You know,
it's so funny that you saidthere's three thumbs in there,
Kelly, because I kind of forgotabout the first one and yet it
was so fucking good. Like thatfirst. vert, like the first
segment is so good. And then thesecond segment, I was like, Oh,
yeah, now we're going intoreally familiar territory. No, I
guess not. Okay, actually. Verygood. And creepy as hell like
(11:25):
it's like a 24 level of creepyat times. That's pretty good.
Yeah, I'd made the mistake oftelling my Alexa that I wanted
to hear the song that wasplaying during one of the scenes
in the movie I had. Thesoundtrack was so interesting
that I resumed it that I askedher to play it then I told her I
(11:46):
liked it. Oh, and then it showedup like out of the blue when I
asked her to play my likes and Iand it's very subtle and
everything so just had beenplaying music and everything.
And then this other thingstarted and I didn't even notice
and I started just going thefuck is going on? I am feeling
creeped out.
Axl, what it says, blah, blah, blah from the empty banjos. I do
(12:10):
not like this song. I changed mymind. I will only play this when
I specifically want to hear it.
Nice. That's awesome. Well, I'mglad that you guys like to
because I I feel like I really,really liked it. But I'm also
like, man, there's so much goingon. It's so complex that it's
really like a lot ofdeconstructing that's going on.
Definitely. Yeah, definitelyworth seeing more than once. Bad
(12:32):
title. Bad trailer.
toaster got that poster so bad.
That's why I didn't watch ituntil you said it was good. It's
like oh, slender man. Yeah, yeah. Well, I saw something
completely different than that,as I continue to enjoy the arrow
streaming service. All right.
Death has blue eyes. Wow.
Directed by Nicko Master arcus, who directed this film called
(13:00):
island to the death island ofdeath, which might be one of the
meanest, darkest films I've everseen. And it's just brutal. I
did not realize he was thedirector. And I never would have
guessed it because watching thismovie is a fun, Goofy, strange
film with a huge weird sense ofhumor.
(13:21):
It's, you know, Italian.
I don't quite know if it'sjello, but it's in that field.
And it hasthese two weird random guys who
just sort of wander around doingshit like stealing, like,
tricking people into stealingfood from hotels and stuff and
they get busted by this lady inor maybe your mom. But turns out
(13:42):
the she has weird mental powers.
So she like can move things. AndI think she can kind of predict
the future and she can, like, kill people very violently with
their brain or move giantthings. Sometimes it's the only
(14:02):
thing she actually can't stopone time when they're being
chased by a helicopter. I thinkit's moving too much. I can't
get ahold of it to blow it up.
Okay.
So it was a lot of fun. And forsome reason, I don't know why
the grandma the mother afterthey tried to steal the hotels
the meal in the hotel. They gavethe mom's hotel room instead.
(14:26):
who's sitting at the table rightnext to him. And then they hire
them to be their bodyguards.
Why? death has blue eyes. Yes.
As soon as you said that I wasgonna say is this an Italian
film? Yeah.
I believe it's an English Idon't think it was an Italian
(14:46):
wine. You know how they a lot oftimes they phonetically speak
English. And then just sort oftry to make it sound good but so
it's it's weird, but man, it'sfun. Arrow arrow continues to
just put on weird shit.
Okay.
I saw a movie that I wish I hadseen in the theater. This is the
(15:07):
only problem with a releasing afilm, in theaters and on on
demand or whatever it's called.
I saw nobody Bob Odenkirk Oh,yeah. $20 rental. It is
absolutely worth the $20. And Iwish I had seen it in the
theater. It was so much fun. Itwas so good. absolutely loved
it. Christopher Lloyd is in it.
(15:30):
And he is awesome as well. Justlike a more humorous john wick.
Wow. Yeah, yeah, I absolutelyloved it. I can't say enough
about it. And I don't want tosay anything more about it. I
just had such a good time withit. And if you're, if you're
waiting on it, I would say, youknow, if you have a girlfriend,
(15:53):
you and the wife are looking fora movie $20 is not that much
right. $10 a person less thangoing to the theaters, at least
around here for a good goodmovie. So
I saw a film that another onethat really surprised me. And I
bet you both have seen promisingyoung woman. I've seen that on a
(16:18):
previous episode. Yeah. Yeah.
That's another good crediblemovie. Yeah, I was a little
surprised to see it show up inthe Oscars. Just because it was.
Yeah, relatively was it for BestActress. Best Picture? Whoa.
Best Actress and Best one forBest Screenplay, I believe.
Okay. Yeah, that's one of thoseones where it? I kept thinking
(16:39):
it was gonna go in a directionand didn't. Yeah. And but to the
point where it was a bettermovie for it. And then it had an
ending that I won't say, butOh, that ending just off a lot
of people. I bet I bet. But it'svery complex, because I don't
(17:00):
think arevenge film can end happily.
Yeah, I don't know that you canmake that I don't know that it
works in the way like, you can'tmake a film about nasty people.
And then have it be like, so Ihad the complex feelings to
where afterwards I was like, I'mso sad right now. Like, I have
to watch something happy. Butit's an incredible film. I
(17:25):
actually didn't realize it wasprobably the lead actress.
I'm forgetting her name now. AndEric's gonna get on look it up
and find it. But is it AmyAdams? It is.
Not Amy Adams. She's like she'sin every fucking movie. You
could you could take a momentand go inside Amy Adams.
(17:49):
But no. Carey Mulligan. Thankyou. Oh, yeah. And I had no
idea. I'd seen the posters. I'dseen the trailer. I had no idea.
It was Carey Mulligan halfwayinto the film. I was like, Oh, I
was Carrie.
She's just she's justincredible. She's such an
incredible actress. She's just atotal chameleon. Who just jumps
(18:09):
in that movie? She's a friggincomplete.
Fucking nails. It just nails it.
So check it out. But then like, give yourself an ice cream
after? Oh, I like ice cream.
You got to see this film. It's areally smart take on Ray
preventers. Yeah. Oh, films.
Yeah, it's it's a very neatway of addressing that genre. So
(18:31):
should we talk about anotherlarge one that came out this
week, but it was not nearly assuccessful? I assume that.
Oh my gosh, yes. Unfortunately.
That song is completely underutilized in the movie. That
might have been a small savinggrace. I think that's why, even
(18:53):
though I haven't seen in solong, I enjoyed the original.
Because that song is so much funand used so well in that dumb
original movie. That jag. Okay, this is still cool. Every time
it shows up. It's like the rockything. Yeah, let's go. What
movie are you talking about? Isaid Mortal Kombat on you never
said mortal.
(19:16):
Finish. They did have that one.
Sort of.
Yeah.
Damn. They didn't make a babyappear at the end of any battle.
You didn't see this, Vanessa?
No, I have not. I'm intending toactually probably this week. But
well, you know, if you don'twant to spoil, like a tie about
another movie.
(19:37):
I can just I can just pretendit's such a deep, thick plot
to see where it's going. Right.
It was not great, but it hadsome moments in it. There were a
lot of fun. Yeah. And I'll tellyou, I could have watched the
first segment with Scorpion andsub zero and feudal Japan. You
know, I could watch an entiremovie that
(20:00):
had invented and much ratherwould have watched an entire
movie. That was almost a mistaketo start the movie with that
because it was so good. Yeah, but it's set up going Whoa, this
is gonna be a hell of a movie.
Nope. I didn't have highexpectations either, because
it's a mortal kombat movie. Imean, the first one's dumb and
fun. Least I remembered beingdumb and fun. The second one was
not good. But this looked cool.
(20:23):
The trailer was incredible. Yes,let's say showed like, the first
seven minutes online and I said, you know what this looks like
it's gonna be great. Wow. So Ihad much higher hopes for Yeah.
And I didn't realize that thatnew character they introduced
has never been in a video game.
I just figured he'd somecharacter that has been added
(20:43):
since I hadn't played Yeah, cuzthere's so many more like
they're at what 12 now? I'myeah, I'm not sure but they
added a whole new one asked whois like superhero level powers.
There's a little problem withthat like sub zero was way too
big. time ago. What do we got anAvengers movie here? Go on.
(21:05):
Yeah, would have been nice tosee an actual tournament. Yeah,
since this is a movie based on agame that is about a tournament.
Yeah.
That a Yeah, it was it was aletdown. What were they talking
about doing? Because who is acharacter that didn't appear?
Johnny k? Yeah. Johnny Cage andthat guy? Oh, the MS. The
(21:27):
Wrestler. For him the MS. He wasalso on like, he won one of
those MTV reality shows wherejoin the WWE. Okay. And here, he
might be a great choice becausehe whether he is or not. He
plays an arrogant asshole.
wonderfully. Well, wait asecond. So I'm lost in what
you're saying that Ms. Maybe ifI do the sequel, Gianni Cajun
(21:49):
might be playing I see her sojust so you know, Johnny Cage
does not appear. that kaino hadsome good lines. And he was you
know, the fun part of the film.
He but otherwise.
I don't know. I was entertained.
For a Saturday morning. I mademy bagel had some bacon and sat
down to watch Mortal Kombat andfound myself on my phone a lot.
(22:12):
Yeah, that was on. Yep.
Hmm. I am glad it was I watchedit the way I watched it. Rather
than going to the theater. Yes.
I thought I was not in thetheater. See this one?
Well, okay, on that horriblenote, way to go, Eric, bring it
(22:32):
well, I could talk about anothermovie I saw words filled with
vomiting. And this actually mademe feel physically ill by the
time I was done.
Wewe might want to mention though,
because there was onethere was one other big thing
that happened this week. Oh,okay. Did you guys not see the
finale?
(22:53):
Falcon and winter snowman ofCaptain America. And Winter
Soldier. You're gonna you'regonna throw that out? That's
kind of a spoiler. It's in theopening title.
We have it in the final episode.
Well, I did see it. Yes. It wasgreat. Yes. Although the john
(23:16):
Walker character kind of comesback and kind of redeemed
himself with which made me feeluncomfortable. Yeah, that was a
little too quick. And it was itwas a quick tour. I didn't
realize it was only gonna be sixepisodes. That's what shocked
me. I thought it was gonna be atenner. So yeah, that was a
quick turn. But I really likethat arc in general. Even though
(23:37):
it did feel fast. I was reallystoked. I was like, Yeah, you're
complexes hell. You have allkinds of shit going on. And I
was excited that he's like aknown entity within the universe
was a US agent. Yeah. Irecognize the outfit and I
remember some of the stuff Ijust like, Oh, yeah, that was
(23:58):
his name because it's fun.
Exactly. memorable.
superhero name. Right. I wasthrilled to see Julia Louis
Dreyfus showing the Countess whoI would have had no idea who she
was, except that for somereason, a couple months ago, I
decided to start reading NickFury agent of shield on the 60s
(24:20):
Oh wow. Jim Stanko draw well, and she is one of the shield
agents that comes in and thenbackstabs Nick Fury, so I'm
hopeful that she will have abigger role in this Secret
Invasion sure look like the nextone? Yeah, sure. Look like Yeah,
I was gonna say what the heck ishappening next because like
they've been lining them up andlining them up. So yeah, so
(24:42):
Secret Invasion. If it followsthe comic book storyline, we'll
find out that a lot of thepeople that we thought were
heroes were actually scrollsholy cannoli. I don't know if I
can deal with a big scrolltwist. A lot of scrolls. So
many, really in here. It's justsuch a
magoffin it's like oh, where wasthe scroll? Like No, just have a
(25:04):
plot.
Yeah, I can't keep doing this.
Okay, happy. Can we take abreak? Yes. Thank you. All
right. We'll be right back.
Louie just sneezed. Look whatcame out of his nose. pull one
(25:28):
out, but watch out, pick thewrong one and he'll flip his
leg. His brains flew out. Goahead and pick a winner. Louie,
Louie.
We have returned Eric, this wasyour sub genre and we're going
(25:48):
to explain what it is the ideawas to try to find something
that was a good horror film.
More specifically because wekind of got away from that for a
while. Andone that didn't spawn sequels
one that didn't haveremakes one that was not you
know, like you know Halloween?
No. invasion the Body Snatchersbecause tons remix. So that was
(26:14):
the idea. Roger and with that Icame across the film called from
1976 I'm just stuck in the 70shis last few
the which came in for otherwhich came from the seat.
(28:30):
I never heard of it. This. ThisRotten Tomatoes has a critics at
80 this is an interesting onethe critics and at the crowd at
34. Whoa. And I think I knowwhy. a cliff. Yeah, it's a Hey,
it's available on Arrowstreaming. What the only thing I
seem to be watching anyway, actually watch this episode
(28:52):
brought to you again byeurostrings. Actually are or
watch actually watch the disc.
I've got the box. It's part of abox set that I'll talk about a
little bit later. But it'sdirected by Matt simper. Who's
best known for 456 episodes ofglow. The 80s wrestling show.
That girl from Boston. That'sthe title of description,
(29:17):
and a documentary called sex andastrology.
man and wife and educatededucational film for married
adults. Oh my god.
I can only imagine the intromusic
is right. They're written byRobert Tom who wrote the
defenders TV show and Death Race2000
(29:40):
stars Millie Perkins, who's hasa long and pretty, pretty solid
group of films but okay, notprinted Book of the Dead. Are
they happy? But she's on theElvis TV show. which I believe
was the one that started withjohn carpenter. I believe I'm
not sure I need double check.
As a john Carpenter join thatwas the but there was natural
(30:04):
show then alsoprivate TV show and Wall Street
and the Diary of Anne Frank. Sovariety Oh films, and Lani
Chapman and Vanessa Brown.
I got so excited forthis one movie in 1976 I'm
guessing No.
(30:28):
So the movie starts off withthis woman taking care of her
two nephews on a beach. And it'skind of a Muscle Beach sort of
thing where there's three orfour guys working out
who are incredibly jack for the70s. Like, like Arnold
Schwarzenegger, kind of guys.
That's not the part of theiranatomy. She's focusing on
however, slots of shots of thesespeedos as the guys are lifting
(30:49):
their themselves up and down.
And she seems very interested inwatching them closely. I comment
down their families. Yeah, sureit is. Yeah. And then it ends
with all three of these guyslooking like they've been killed
by weird Grizzly weightliftingmachines. whatever they're
working on. At this point, like,I don't think she actually
(31:11):
killed anybody. I think this isin our head.
As they're leaving, they comeacross Jack's Dracula's tattoo.
Which looks like almost to thelove it's actually the film
looks like a shot in LA but itlooks like almost a parody level
of Wow, this is a really rundownhorrible tattoo shop you don't
(31:32):
want to go into and then the guycomes out because like Oh, why
do I tattoo and the tattoo guycomes to kids runaway
then it moves forward andthey're there now if her the
kid's parents and they'rewatching the
Rams play on TV, and they'retalking about these players that
being the greatest of all time,so of course I'm never heard of
(31:54):
this guy like I'm pretty sureit's the name they just made up.
Which is good considering wherethe movie goes. Her sister
getting an arguments aboutfatherhood and all that kind of
stuff. She seems Molly the leadseems very delusional in her
representation of rememberingever father, which is she is
there's the film has moments oris this is this real? Or is this
(32:17):
her head what is going on? Andthe first scene like that is her
seeming to be with the footballplayer they are talking about on
TV and another football player.
So it's hurting two guys.
And part of what makes it weird.
It's not necessarily shot weird.
It doesn't have any videoeffects. But the audio becomes a
little warbly and echoey.
(32:39):
It's not hard to understand isthat well, but it's like okay,
what is going on here. So she'skind of fooling around with the
guys more like not doinganything but they're getting
ready to do something. And she'stying one of them up. While this
other guy smokes what looks likethe weirdest looking bomb I've
ever seen. It's like kinda lookslike a pipe. But he just stuck a
(33:00):
joint in the top of it. It'ssmoking outside. It's like a
messed up cigarette.
Butt so she types and gags Theboth of them eventually goes
into the bathroom and comes backout complaining This is going to
take forever, because you don'thave a proper straight razor
blade. Oh, and then proceeds toemasculate the men, shall we
(33:21):
say, Oh, no, it's not terriblygraphic, but you certainly know
what's going on. And then thenext day, she seemingly wakes up
to the news of these two peoplebeing killed. And she's like,
Oh, my God, who would kill thesetwo beautiful men. What has
happened is I did she killed.
(33:43):
And it works. You're very muchkind of going, Oh, okay. She
seems delusional enough thatthis could be completely made up
or it's actually something shereally did. That's where this
movie starts to go. really dark, really dark, and some flashbacks
of her relationship with herfather. first one's fairly
innocuous kind of like maybethere's something weird going on
(34:04):
there. But there's moreflashbacks to come. But
and she has the very strangemorality towards people on TV.
Like anybody on TV is much moreimportant and definitely much
more worth listening to thananybody else that tells her
anything. So she gets veryobsessed with a guy on a razor
blade commercial.
(34:27):
It's a weird commercial, notquite out of place for a 70s
one, but it's very.
Basically him and a woman aresaying, well, let's not I've
shaved so let's not go out let'sstay home.
He and gets she gets talked intogoing to a party, because she
(34:48):
finds out this guy might betheir party has a
shall we say an interestingencounter between her and the
guy running the party. Shedoesn't. It's it's kind of he's
he going toUse her, or is she going to come
back at him and end up killinghim? She doesn't kill him, but
she does beat the shit out ofthem.
(35:09):
An interesting scene from the70s, which plays really strange
because you know what actuallyhappened in the room, but she's
sitting around with a bunch offriends. And she's trying to
blame herself. And they're allsaying no, this should not have
happened to you should not getattacked no matter what you do.
You don't deserve to getattacked, which is like a great
scene. But it's weird in thecontext of this film, sure,
(35:32):
becauseanyway, so she ends up going
back to Dracula's tattoo andgetting this very,
really bad. Giant mermaid frommid chest down to her waist and
starts going around saying, wellnow I'm Molly, the Little
Mermaid. Oh, my God. And one ofthe waitresses where Molly works
(35:56):
is convinced that she knows whokilled and why the football
players were killed because allfootball players are gay.
She uses a different language, but you get the idea. But it's
it's funny though. It's donealmost tumor in a humorous way,
the way she's talking about it.
And the police seem to begetting closer and figured out
but Molly still has no ideawhat's going on. And then we get
(36:17):
another flashbackof her coming home and finding
her father sitting naked in theback of a closet. Alright.
Sounds like a normal Sundayafternoon. She ends up dating
the guy from the razorcommercial. Wait a second, what
happens with the dead in thecloset? Well, that's just that's
the one flashback. There's stillat least one more. Okay.
(36:43):
We'll see how much of that I'lltell you.
But she goes out with the guythat has that. And he has a she
has an illusion of him. You needto basically saying you need to
kill me with this razor and hestarts to cut himself.
Unfortunately, we're really notgreat effects. It's very
obvious. It's just blood on theeraser is no cutting at all.
(37:10):
Which is weird because there'ssome really gnarly violence
earlier on. So she ends up goingback and is she killing him
while she's covered with blood?
Although she's doing it with thesafety razor, you know, the kind
of big razor? Oh my god, this isgonna take forever. That just
sounds so mildly painful. Andlet's see. Here's my note on the
(37:30):
last flashback scene. Holy shit.
The end of this movie is allkinds of wrong. No wonder Molly
has issues to work through.
Because it is. Well her dad washorrible to her. And it's I
wouldn't say it's showngraphically but for what the
content is. I say it's graphicenough. It's like
(37:53):
wow, okay, if this movieinterests anybody at all I'm
about to spoil it because thedark ending is so fucking dark.
It is so I it's just unreal.
What is what happens at the endof the film? The her her
boyfriend. She's got a regularboyfriend through the whole
thing that she's good with. It'snot the razor guy. That's not
the razor guy. He's just he'skind of an on and off boyfriend.
He probably got fuck buddy wouldbe what you'd call him probably
(38:17):
now. And the waitress who thinksall the NFL players are gay is a
friend of hers.
And they realize that she's theperson. She has been doing these
killings.
And so they decide. She's very, you know, depressed and sad and
upset so they decide she needsto take a lot of extra pills.
(38:40):
And Molly agrees with them.
She's like yes, I think I shouldI think I should take all of
these bills. Will you help me?
like okay, and that's darkenough. The two nephews show up
and Molly looks at them and goeswell you guys give me the Help
me take these pills likeoh my god.
like okay, you're you're you'regoing to have her nephews help
(39:05):
commit suicide? Sure. Like theit's it popped up on a lot of
most disturbing films. Andthrough most of my gumbo, okay,
yeah, guys getting castrated isdisturbing, but it's definitely
not unqualified. Any of and thenby the end, I'm gone. Okay. Yep.
(39:26):
Yeah, this is. Wow. So it's anincredibly well done. Movie
carried bythe performance of Molly, the
lead is just stellar.
Andso you know, it's a happy little
movie at the end. 1976 is andwow.
(39:49):
The notes trivia, the taglinefor this joyful little film.
Molly really knows how to cutmen down to size so good.
It's part of arrows got a seriesof two box sets of three films,
which is underrated horror fromAmerica. It's a series of films
(40:11):
I feel like should be talkedabout, like last house on the
left or Texas Chainsaw orsomething. And if this one's any
indication of the other films onthere, yes, they're right. This
isit's not a happy movie. It's not
it's a rough one to watch. Idon't think it could ever reach.
Because of some of the subjectmatter. I don't think it could
ever reach the popularity. Evenof last house on the left, as
(40:32):
dark and grim as that film ishanging on Eric and getting
pencil and paper. It's not ahappy movie. Let me write this.
Just in case you didn't get thatalready. See intro to the movie.
The director calls it meditativeover 76 films, so yeah, it has a
76 movie pacing, although Inever really felt bored. Just
(40:54):
because her performance is sogood and so weird.
And there's to be two DPSlisted. See if you can figure
out which one probably did mostof the work. First guy listed
who's can give who directedsuper boobs and Nikki court. Oh
my god, no renegades TV show andthe uncredited dp Dean khundii
(41:22):
dP on Halloween one throughthree Escape from New York Big
Trouble in Little China all theBack to the Future movies
Jurassic Park, Who Framed RogerRabbit and more than 100 cent in
photography credits with threefilms currently in pre
production. But did he do superboobs? I mean, I think that is
(41:44):
considering is incredibly goodlooking film. And well
structured. I think it'sprobably not super bowl.
The film originally got a xrating from NCAA and had to have
several cutsfrom the tagline to get a higher
rating. And it was one of the 72Films banned by Britain as a
(42:04):
video nasty which Okay, anddidn't really wasn't released in
the UK until 2006. In an uncutform.
The poster art is deeplydeceiving.
It is a cover for more in comicsvampirella number 11 with art by
Frank frazetta. Oh, wow, the thewhich link is called the which I
(42:29):
looked up the original art andit's it basically looks like
they took that art put on a newface, put in a new background
has nothing to do with the film.
Does it show her like as awitch? Not really. It's more
like avery from Frank frazetta his
work and did a lot of Conan andthings. It's more like a spirit,
maybe of which you might see inConan. Certainly not a Salem,
(42:53):
more like a swords and sandals.
Yeah, yeah, exactly. So if yousee the poster for this, it is
just ridiculous. film.
At one point, Billy Perkinsilead was married to Dean
Stockwell.
Okay.
Your trivia.
(43:14):
as trivial as it gets, right?
This one is truly disturbing forme after reading the movie to
find out the casting agent casthis own daughter to play the kid
in the flashbacks. Wow, why?
That's so weird. When you hearstuff like that. We're gonna
have a little bit remind me whenwe get to my movie. We're gonna
have a little bit of that mymother. Oh, okay.
(43:35):
Yes, yes. After your reaction tothe lady in white. I would
recommend you avoid this film atall.
And the disc did have a prettygood documentary and they're
very Millie and the director anda lot of
really well done apparel.
production is top notch thatthey put together. So that was
(43:56):
my happy entry into one and doneand I know why it's never been
remade.
Oh my god. I mean, I love thetitle. The title sounds great.
Yeah, it's it's a really wellmade movie. It's I'm going to
remember it for a long time.
(44:18):
Like I need hypnotherapy rightnow.
Well, the movie that I pickedout is about as far away from
yours as possible. And familydynamics are completely the
office.
And definitely a cheerier filmconsidering it's not necessarily
cheery content. And that wouldbe the 2006 film the host,
(44:45):
formaldehyde, dirty formaldehydepouring into the seek
(46:09):
I'm still alive? Why don't youcontact the police or military,
a human rights organization?
(46:51):
That's a good film. It's a greatfilm. And you know, it's funny
because you you put out the oneand done concept and I started
kind of racking my brain tryingto figure out films and I'm sure
there are many, many amazingqualifying movies. But the first
like 10 I thought of I was like,and this one had a sequel I
never saw and this one is basedon something I didn't realize.
(47:13):
So it was definitely once I cameacross this and remember this
existed. I was like, I have notseen this since college. I've
got to check it out.
For those of you who don't know, this is the South Korean, the
host, not these Stephenie Meyer.
I'm glad I didn't know that. Sheused it. Oh, yeah. I read that
(47:36):
book and saw that version of thehost. And boy, howdy, if you
thought that Stephanie, if yougave her a pass for
not misogynistic and abusivetowards women. Twilight
definitely is fine.
Then you are wrong.
No.
(47:57):
Well, hold on.
I'm looking at the news righthere the host to get stricter
him young Tom Park.
What does it say that was 2014on there? I don't see it. Do you
know what year it is? Sir.
I'll get there. I will get thereeasily The last thing I'm going
to say but I'd send there.
(48:22):
This film, interestingly, RottenTomatoes. 93%. For critics.
Yeah. extremely high. 72% foraudience, which sucks. But I
think it's something that Eric'smentioned before where it's a
foreign film, Foreign LanguageFilm. So I guess people are
like, Oh, no, the crazy monstersnot enough. Look, if you were
(48:44):
sitting with 10 of your friends, and seven of them said they
liked this movie. That's apretty good.
It's not too bad. 7.2 ones onthe you know, one. We're
convinced.
I'm the director of this, ofcourse, is the amazing. Bong
Joon Ho. Let me know if I saidthat wrong. Yeah, I'll let you
(49:06):
know that.
Anyone is like no, that's notthe right pronunciation. So he
won the Oscar obviously lastyear for a parasite. Just
incredible director we all knowhim from things like not only
Mother snowpiercer oak jaw andparasite but also other films
(49:28):
like memories of murder. There.
I'm definitely going to huntdown this one called Tokyo where
he did a segment and barkingdogs never bite which is
supposed to be amazing. I havenot yet seen that one either. He
actually does a little morewriting than he does directing.
He's written all of hisdirecting projects or or most of
them. So it's it's nice that hehas that kind of multi part
(49:48):
creative talent. That being saidhe did have two writers who were
helping him out on this, but Iwant to say they had a real
light hand because both of themhave only ever done three films.
Total. So one did a guy anotherfilm called stray dogs and spy
girl and the other did somethingcalled undercover and poor roar,
(50:09):
the snow fairy and animatedadventure. So I don't know that
they really had much other thanprobably a spell check.
Wow,the cost of this, you have like
kind of a nice cast of sixcharacters that are the main
characters. So you have threesiblings, a father and a
daughter. Okay, so five, butit's a kind of family dynamic.
(50:32):
And they each pull their ownweight. The lead is this kind of
bumbling idiot, good fornothing. Brother slash son who
helps his father run this sortof beach side or river side food
stand where they bring food outto picnickers. And it's
(50:53):
interesting. It's obviouslydefinitely like a South Korean
thing. It's not something thatI've encountered over here, but
it's something that you wouldimagine if you went to a seaside
town, you would walk up thereand be like, I want a corn dog.
I'm a blanket number six, andthen they come out with a corn
dog but with squid.
Let's switch that out.
So that's played by. It'scredited as sung King. Whoa. But
(51:19):
his name is also King Whoa, song. Because Asian names are
amazing, and I just don't fullyunderstand them. But he plays
the character Park game do. He'sbeen in quite a few films 34
credits he's a favorite to beused by Bong Joon ho and has
(51:40):
been in almost all of hismovies, including sympathy for
Mr. Vengeance, which is not oneof his films, but it's something
we all know. Memories of murderlady vengeance, the host
snowpiercer parasite. He's donea lot of TV and he's
pretty well known in SouthKorea. We also have Bay Donna
who plays Park Manju, the sistershe's been in 35 things
(52:04):
including since eight, JupiterAscending and Cloud Atlas. So
she's crossed the pond.
Park Hi, Lee plays Parque NamIL, the brother. He's been in 33
things. The only one I knew ismemories of murder. And beyond
he bomb plays he bomb theFather. And he's been in 41
(52:25):
things I suspect he's prettywell known as well. But he was
also recognizably in Oak jaw andmemories of murder. So
obviously, bomb, like reallylikes to use the same the same
people over and over. It just Ithink from the sounds of it, it
just makes his life a loteasier. And he can spend more
time on the other things in thefilm, instead of just spending
all the time trying to get theactors where they need to go.
(52:45):
And then last but not least, wehave a really talented at Park
human so played by ko song. So Iwill not be referring to these
people's names. I will just becalling them their roles
throughout the rest of thosebecause I don't want to keep
making people feel bad. But sheshe plays the daughter. She has
been in 21 things including amore recent life on Mars TV show
(53:08):
in 2018. Lots and lots of TV andalso was in snowpiercer. And
she's just awesome. She does agreat job. So the story of the
host. Well, it's not about agroup of friends who tried to do
a seance on the internet. It'snot about a alien that takes
over a girl's body and then letsher boyfriend beat her up.
(53:30):
instead. I love that film andsaid we've got the plot
following a creature that kindof gets accidentally made and
released into the Han River andterrorizes South Korea. So,
yeah, a scientist in the year2000s is working in a lab and
(53:54):
demands for his assistant topour 40 plus bottles of
formaldehyde down the drainbecause the bottles had a layer
of dust on them the assistantprotests but his boss won't
having it any of it and isbasically like nope, do it by.
So the assistant does it cut tothe year 2010 to two men are
(54:14):
fishing in the Han River andthey find a small, strange
aquatic creature, which theythey suspect is some kind of
mutated fish or life form. Theycatch it in a glass and then
drop the glass and it goes offon its merry way
to the year 2006.
And that's when we meet a dopeysleepy, lazy guy who's like our
(54:36):
lead, who's basically asleep onthe counter of this, this food
stand and people are just usedto him being this way. They come
up, they buy their thing, theymove his head up totally asleep
off of some magazines, it's gotchanged under there, they grab
the correct change, put his headback down on top of the coins
and walk off. So this is who wewere dealing with. This is
(54:58):
somebody who's sadas much of a loser as you can
get,but a loser with a heart, his
father, who's super eccentric, but also very sweet and
hardworking, who actually runs astand is helping him out. And
then we also meet his daughterat the same time who shows up in
a school uniform. She'ssarcastic. She's a bit dark, but
she's super quick, quick witted.
(55:21):
She's very young, and she reallywants a new phone. And he's
like, Oh, don't worry, I've gotI've got savings for you. I'm
ready. We're almost there. We'realmost to the new phone for you.
Because she's so embarrassed, she doesn't want to pull it out.
And he brings out this changejar. And she looks at it. And
she's like, that's like $3 thisis not gonna get a new phone.
(55:41):
He's like, No, no, no, no, we'realmost there. We're almost
there. So he obviously loves hisdaughter very much, even though
he's just not a good father.
He's just not, he doesn't havethe tools to do it. In the
meantime, they they run into theback of their little camper
thing. And on the TV is hissister slash the the father,
daughter, obviously. And she'sdoing an Olympic trial for
(56:02):
archeryis about to win, potentially the
gold medal, so they're watchingher. But something happens, she
just holds on to the bow toolong and doesn't release in time
the timer runs out. And eventhough she hits the middle, she
has to go home with a bronze. Sowe have this great setup of our
characters early on, have theirtheir their positives or
(56:25):
negatives, and just a reallygood family dynamic right off
the bat.
So the son asked to is asked togo and correct an order that he
got wrong. And he runs out withthe squid that he ate a leg off
of, because that's the kind ofguy he is. That's the thing,
(56:46):
toasted squid nomnom. He runs itout to a blanket and he sees all
these people standing at theedge of the water. And he's
wondering what's going on. Andhe's trying to give this dude
his food. And the dude's likenot paying attention. And he's
looking at the water. And theysee out in the river, this giant
creature that's emerging. Andthey somebody throws a beer can
at it in it grabs the beer andpulls it under. And everyone's
(57:08):
like, oh, let's throw stuffahead and see what happens. All
this stuff gets rained down uponit, all of these items, and the
creature kind of sits down therefor a minute. And then all of a
sudden, it just jumps out of thewater and starts eating
everybody. So magical. So I'mchasing them down, just
(57:29):
destroying them. really magicalmoment, he's kind of falling all
over the place. And thereforethe creature just keeps missing
him. Because he's just such aclumsy Oh,
it's there's a really harrowingmoment where a bunch of people
go into one of the little like,Riverside structures and kind of
hide themselves. They've closedthe door, and the monsters
(57:51):
running around, and the monsterjust opens the door and just go
straight in there. And all yousee is just blood and like
banging, like pouring out. Andlike the other side is there's
another door but it's locked.
And you're like, Oh my God, thismovie is dark.
So of course, our main characteris running and he sees his
(58:14):
daughter. And so he grabs herhand and lifts her up and we go
into slow mo and they're runningtogether, and they stumble, and
then he gets back up, grabs, herhand keeps going, keeps going.
And then all of a sudden thisother man runs alongside him
grabs the other hand of thisperson he's carrying and off.
They go and it's not hisdaughter, and he turns around
(58:36):
and he looks at his daughter isjust getting herself up off the
grass. Hartsuff gonna cry.
He sees the monster barrelingtowards her and she's there's
just nothing you can do. And itgrabs her with its I think it's
its tail. And it runs off intothe water with her. And this big
(58:59):
bumbling guy tries to chaseafter but he's slow. He's You
know, he jumps in the water, hegets about five feet out he and
the things already across theother side and gone. And so it's
just assumed that the daughterhas died. Cut to everyone has
been quarantined, and also at afuneral. So there's all these
kind of pictures that are up ofall the dead, I guess very
(59:21):
quickly done. And there's alsoan official walking around being
like, Oh, are you? How much? Howclose Did you get to this thing?
And we start to get a littlesense of the humor that's in
this for example, the officialslike so you guys, there's like
something going on. But I don'tI can't really explain it. We're
going to wait for the TV toexplain it to you. So I'm just
(59:42):
going to just going to turn iton. And the TV starts to play
with the news. And it neverreally happens. And he's like,
Ah, don't worry about it. Couldyou guys just go over there and
you're just like, oh my godwhat's happening right now. We
then meets the whole familybecause they all arrive to pay
tribute toThe last daughter so you have
the the lead main guy, you havehis father, you also have the
(01:00:06):
Olympic brown bronze medalistsister who shows up. And another
child, the their brother whoalso comes he's kind of a middle
management type. They're all youknow, crying and sobbing in an
incredible scene where they arejust going freakin nuts with
emotion. And people start andcome over and take pictures of
(01:00:26):
them because they're just cryingand sobbing so loudly and like,
they look like they're wrestlingeach other just flailing on the
ground. Apparently, one Fun factthat scene was improved. So it's
just really impressive. Sobasically, what's happened is
there's this idea that anyonewho came in contact with a
creature needs to bequarantined, because there's
some kind of virus that'shappening. So the whole family
(01:00:48):
gets quarantined. And whilethey're under quarantine, our
league guys phone goes off. Andwho's on the other line, but his
daughter, I'm in a sewersomewhere, come and get me.
Now we start the race for theentire family to try and break
out of quarantine either this, some of them try to convince
(01:01:11):
people with money withheartache. No, just you know, do
the test as quickly as possible.
And then let me out and they'relike, No, no, no, no, no, not
only can you not leave, but ourlead. God apparently opened his
mouth and like swallowed some ofthe spit of the monsters.
They're like, No, no, no, no,you are really not leaving. So
the father sets up this kind ofheist, where he pays somebody
(01:01:32):
basically everything he owns forthem to help them. For some
dudes help them escape in awhite van. So they get out of
there. And they start theirgreat search for the daughter
who is somewhere in the sewersystem. And thus, we begin this
really interesting family dramaslash comedy slash monster
movie, of these people trying tohunt down this girl in across
(01:01:54):
the entire Han River having noidea where she is other than
it's a large sewer, thecharacter development and this
is really neat. There's a lot oftwists and turns where different
family members are separated orare injured or in custody, you
get to see each character reallyshine all the way through trying
to rescue this girl, I don'treally, really want to give away
(01:02:17):
the ending. Other than that,I'll say that it's by the same
guy who did parasite. And youcan see some of the similarities
in there. But just throw a giantmonster in there. There's a lot
of kind of class stuff going on.
There's a lot of like I say, family dynamics happening. And
there's a really goodturnaround, where near the end,
they all have to work togethereven though they're so
(01:02:38):
different. To try and kill andtake down this creature. I love
this movie. It's the writing isincredible. The fish I think was
a really good choice of designas a giant monster, mostly
because the CGI does not agewell.
Being like fishy and scaly ispretty, pretty helpful. Also,
(01:03:01):
it's heartbreaking. The actingis such it's just so top notch
that even though it's a comedy,it almost makes it harder. When
the hard things happen. watchinghis heart ache, knowing that he
couldn't save his daughter. Itwas just, like impossible to sit
through. He's just so visiblydestroyed by it. But somehow
(01:03:23):
also at the exact same timehilarious. So there's just
really, really great stuff goingon. I totally recommend this
film and checking it out. Justvery nice, interesting,
authentic little familyrelationships.
The bad and only bad thingreally about this movie is the
CGI sucks. It's I mean, like Isaid, it just does not age.
(01:03:44):
Well. I was a 2006. It was alsonot great in 2000. Was it okay,
and there is kind of a reasonfor that. So this film was given
a huge budget in South Korea. Soit was given 10 billion South
Korean bucks, whatever thoseare,
(01:04:05):
which is just over 10 million USdollars. So despite that, he
really was able to stretch themoney in a lot of ways. But
unfortunately, one of thosethings was the special effects
were really, really minimal.
They actually did get thecreature designed and molded in
New Zealand by the wedoworkshop, which you guys might
know as Peter Jackson, Jackson'scompany, the animatronics were
(01:04:28):
done by john Cox's creatureworkshop and the CGI was done by
at the orphanage which had donea lot of the effects for day
after tomorrow. So they theyreally tried to put their money
in a good place. But you see thecreature so much throughout the
film that I just don't thinkit's stretched very far. They
did actually, in fact film A lotof it by the Han River, which
meant that all the cast and crewhad to get tetanus shots.
(01:04:55):
On river man as a rough spot andthey had to deal with the
weather too.
which included the temperaturesfreezing, and they had to go in
and break up the river which wasbasically frozen sewage water at
that point.
When it got hot and windy, thewater would evaporate and the
silt would turn into dust andblow into their faces as
(01:05:19):
is grotty to think about.
Really, really tough However, this is as of March 2009. So who
knows if this has changed now,but it was the highest grossing
film in South Korea, selling atotal of 13 million tickets.
This meant that over 20% ofSouth Korea population watch the
movie,although some were people who
(01:05:40):
went saw multiple times. So itwas a cultural phenomenon to the
point where they actually have astatue of the creature on the
side of the Han River. I loveit. Nice. Just so cool. I love
that dedication to film.
Bong Joon ho has expressed somefrustration when making the film
and stating that when you firstthink of making a monster movie,
(01:06:03):
you have to realize that a lotof people may be down on you
because there's a big prejudiceprejudice against such films. He
described that after he hadconceived of the idea and told
his friends about it. Theylooked at him like he was a
crazy person and told them Don'tdo it. Don't waste your talent.
So Bong Joon ho was disheartenedby these comments, which he
(01:06:24):
described as little wounds tohis heart, and then proceeded to
write the rest of the script insecret. And then he looked at
called every one of themafterwards and says, Up yours
completely, completely. Themonster was inspired by an
article about a deformed fishwith an S shaped spine caught in
(01:06:44):
the Han River. He wanted it tolook like an actual mutated fish
creature, rather than a morefantastical monster. So in the
opening scene, this is reflectedin the fishermen catching that
fish, which is kind of based onan actual thing that happened,
which I'll get more into in aminute. The CO writer and
directorthe director, I guess, bong Joon
Ho, I don't know why listed thatway, and the designer of the
(01:07:06):
creature nicknamed it SteveBuscemi, based on the actor
screen persona and the way heacted in Fargo.
Pretty good, pretty good.
Politically, the film was inpart inspired by an incident in
2000, in which a Koreanmortician working in the US
military in Seoul reported thathe was ordered to dump a large
(01:07:28):
amount of formaldehyde down thedrain. In addition to its
environmental concerns, thiscaused some antagonism towards
the United States. The Americanmilitary stationed in South
Korea is portrayed as uncaringabout the effects of their
activities have on the locals.
The chemical agent used by theAmerican military to combat the
(01:07:49):
monster in the end of the movieis called agent yellow, which is
clearly a thinly veiledreference to Agent Orange, but
is also used as a satirical kindof tool. The director said, it's
a stretch to simply say that thehost is an anti American film,
but there's certainly a metaphorand political commentary about
the US. But that isn't to saythat he doesn't also make fun of
(01:08:12):
North Korean authorities as wellas South Korean government and
bureaucrat. There's a lot nobodyis safe from this film. He goes
hard. He even went as far as toincorporate footage from the
Iraq War and the film's newsfootage for two reasons. First,
it allowed the story toprogress. But it also gave the
director the ability to includepolitical satire as maybe the
(01:08:36):
virus isn't real. Maybe it's arumor, just as there were no
weapons of mass destruction andthat's a deep cut Yo, this film
was received incredibly well.
It's actually one of QuentinTarantino's top 20 favorite
films Reese released between 92and 2009 sequels. Okay, let's
(01:08:57):
talk about the sequels guys.
TWITCH film announced inNovember 3 2009 that a video
game was planned to be releasedas a multi platform first person
shooter as of 2020. No game hasbeen released and it is assumed
to be vaporware, which basicallymeans a product or an idea
that's pitched but neveractually happens. SQL in June
2007, it was announced that a 3dfilm alternately referred to as
(01:09:22):
a sequel, or prequel in newsreports was in progress with a
different director. The budgetfor the host too was announced
at close to us 12 million andwould be based on a script by
webcomic artists came from Fuji.
There's a thing full hatefulnews blocking it. And FX demo
(01:09:43):
reel debuted at the TokyoInternational Film Festival in
2010. And the projected releasedate was summer 2012. Announced
however as of 2020, there's noother updates and the project is
considered atAs a status unknown, our remake
in November 2008, was announcedby Universal Studios with Gore
(01:10:04):
Verbinski producing Mark poorpoor writing and the first time
director Frederick bonddirecting the film was set for
2011 release. However, theproduction remains in so called
development hell. So I love thisbecause people have tried so
hard and it doesn't needanything it did. No one needs to
(01:10:27):
remake this. No sequels need tohappen. It's fine. It's great.
It's perfect. We can leave italone. And apparently no one has
managed to so maybe it's cursed.
It's also such a Korean movie, remaking it in America would
just turn it into an Americanmonster movie and it would have
none of the buyout. Absolutely.
Absolutely. There's so manyculturally specific moments
(01:10:49):
within this just all throughoutmy gold, that it would be Yeah,
it would be completely watereddown sort of like what happened
with the grudge when they triedto do the US it's like this
doesn't translate story. Yeah.
Although it's interesting thatGore Verbinski was attached
because he had great successwith the ring. True. So that's
(01:11:11):
probably why they had him. Yeah.
Good choice. I own this movie.
And I don't think I've seen itsince I bought it when it first
came out.
Give it another rewatching I wasin the exact same boat. I was
like I have owned the DVD ofthis for years and never
actually watched it. So ofcourse, I streamed it as I say.
Yeah, I wanted to watch ithigher quality than that dumb
(01:11:32):
DVD now just crap on HD tag.
Well, I thought for sure that Iwas going to do a David Lynch
film for this. I felt like, boy, this is gonna be the easiest one
I've ever done because DavidLynch right. And
(01:11:53):
my favorite movie by David Lynchis Wild at Heart. So imagine my
surprise to find out that thatwas not only based on a book,
but has a film sequel. Yep. Soyeah, with the same characters
and not directed by Lynch Ofcourse. Yeah. But I was like,
Okay, well, that's how but I'mon to something here with David
Lynch. So I'm gonna doEraserhead, and then I watched
(01:12:14):
that fucking movie again and asmuch as I love it, I was like
this movie. How do you talkabout Yeah, just I mean it's you
know on the surface it's veryclear what's going on in it but
it's so fucking weird that I waslike, oh, there's no way if I
try to talk about this weirdfucking baby and all this shit.
The hair.
(01:12:35):
SoI chose from 2007 planet terror.
Supriya for your olddead bodies for data tonight.
And you got a bit about what Itold you you probably wouldn't
believe me they're not livingthen not dead bodies. They're
(01:13:01):
gone. They're not going tosufficient spread all over the
world. What a story a spin foryou quick we are faithful in DC
(01:13:22):
to the laws of science brokenright now the soldiers attorney
top Pathak and he once thathappens Will Tear Us Apart
whether they want to or not aside effect is terror.
To everything in my power tokeep them alive.
(01:13:43):
I never had a choice.
The last hope for humanityby taking my car
I'm writing with you. rests inthe hands of a few no leg.
Stand.
(01:14:10):
Yo, yo the wayIf anyone comes to the door, I
want you to shoot that lovingdad.
(01:14:33):
Specially if it's yourRobert Rodriguez, climate terror
Grindhouse featurethat's not a David Lynch film at
(01:14:56):
all. You're absolutely right.
I could find no budgetinformation on this and box
office of only 11 point 5million worldwide which seems
weird that me they was such aknockout that double bill
is the information I got RottenTomatoes the critics have it as
(01:15:17):
76% the audience has it at 77%very agreed upon number right.
Written and directed by RobertRodriguez, who you'd know from
El Mariachi Desperado, thefaculty desalle Don Sin City and
just a ton of other movies.
Starring Rose magallon you'dknow from screen chaand and
being a very angry person ingeneral.
(01:15:42):
Freddy Rodriguez from Poseidon, lady in the water. But my
favorite once in a while, there's a moment I wish we had
video for people to watch. Ifthe best has had two moments, so
maybe I was scratchingat that for Vanessa. Yeah, my
roses been through some shit.
(01:16:04):
Yo. Let her be mad.
Look, she's very vocal righteverybody's letter.
Listen for so long. I just triedto burn her to the grits. What
are gone? Freddy Rodriguez, whoI love from the movie bottle
(01:16:24):
shot and then a cast ofhundreds. I'll just name off a
couple of people Josh Brolin.
jeffy Michael being BruceWillis, Fergie, Quinn,
Tarantino, Michael Parkes, DannyTrejo, Cheech Marin, and just
the list goes on people. Youknow, I forgot there were so
many famous people on Yeah, itdoesn't quite save this movie. I
think 76% for this is superhigh. This is a so so movie and
(01:16:46):
it is made less because ofTarantino's involvement. I think
he's plays very this is, youknow, we were making fun of
people who like, you know, Idon't like this movie. Because
it's mean, again, it's a horrorfilm. You know, so get over it.
This is a mean spirited moviethat just has some scenes that
(01:17:09):
are just incrediblyuncomfortable.
So we meet cherry darling, atthe beginning, in the opening
credits, in fact, as she'sdancing to the credits and
everything, and it is a reallycool sexy dance scene with names
popping up and all this stuffand ends with her crying on
(01:17:29):
stage. And she goes into thedressing room and the owner of
the bar comes in tells her Hey,because Steph crying on stage,
which is kind of a funny line, you know.
And she says that she needs tomake a real change in her life,
she quits her job.
And while walking home to middleof the night she's walking on
(01:17:53):
this kind of deserted highwayroad. Uh, suddenly, several
military trucks passer and theypass close enough that she has
to throw herself into a bunch oftrash cans.
She brushes herself off.
And we cut to the military basecouple miles away. And we see
this showdown between scientistsand soldiers all fighting over
(01:18:16):
these mysterious canisters thatI put who I didn't put who the
guy is who is the scientist isfighting but he played the Iraqi
soldier in lost memories superhandsome.
He plays kind of a slimyhard to say what he is he is a
bit of a scientist and also kindof a con man and he's dressed
(01:18:38):
really sleazy, and he likes tocarry a canister of his enemies
testicles. Oh, yeah. forgotabout that. Yeah. Power to the
nuts, right.
The soldiers, of course, are ledby Bruce Willis, who shows up
and they all start shooting andhe wants whatever is in these
(01:18:59):
canisters. But what he doesn'trealize is they put a hole in
one of the canisters andeverybody starts zombified.
Like immediately as soon as theybreathe, their skin starts
bubbling. And they're likeI remember very little of that
same theme there. It's twice intheaters. I'm going to like
brace through this because thereis so much going on in this film
(01:19:21):
that it would feel like aVanessa description if I tell
you I'm trying to get betterguys. I'm working on it.
Meanwhile, Sherry has stopped atthe local diner, where a Jeff
Fay he works. And she runs intoa large number of our cast.
(01:19:44):
Like sheriffs and cooks and allthese people who are going to be
part of this movie, butincluding Freddy Rodriguez, who
plays El Rey was her ex loverand very concerned with the fact
that she left and took hisjacket
I've definitely dated that.
guy.
Yeah, but he keeps saying hetook my jacket and she starts
(01:20:05):
getting annoyed and then finallysays, Did you check in the
pocket? And she's like, No. Howmany years as it's been she
hasn't put her hand in thepocket. She puts her hand in the
pocket. She pulls outengagement, right?
Oh, I did not do that guy.
Also, meanwhile, at thehospital, we start to see the
(01:20:26):
effects of the zombie invasionwith people coming in all
infected and gross and meltingand dripping and everything. And
we meet a psychotic doctor, played by Josh Brolin, his wife,
who is planning to leave himshe's having a affair with
Fergie and he is found out aboutit. And this is kind of a plot
point that winds through therest of the movie because she's
trying to escape and deal withthe zombies he's chasing after
(01:20:49):
her and of course, he's become azombie too. And so these zombies
all kind of havetheir, their minds still so
they're not mindless zombies.
Get it their mind full zombies.
What do you think of that? Veryfighter. Meanwhile, again, El
Rey has greed to drive chariotto the bus station because she
(01:21:10):
has a dream of becoming acomedian in LA. And he says, but
you're not funny. And he says, that's what I keep telling
everybody.
That's funny.
Like it'sa good joke. They are soon beset
upon zombies. He has to sort ofthe truck and they drag her off
(01:21:31):
and he goes chasing after herand it gets to her and saves her
but not before they have feastedon her leg.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. So he thendrags her to the hospital. The
cops all hate El Rey. They knowhim. And Michael being in
particular hates him for somereason.
(01:21:54):
We are thenwe were then told later on that
El Rey, who is kind of a punklooking kid. I mean, Freddy
Rodriguez in 2007 looked like hewas he was probably 28 he looks
like he's about 16. And we findout that he has got some kind of
secret. He's He's like topsecret military and knows all
(01:22:17):
about these canisters and all ofthis shit. It's just like,
the cops all hate him. And thisall goes away you expected to
until the cops finally see thezombies for themselves when they
attack the hospital and the copspitch in to help one of the cops
(01:22:39):
is who's that asshole makeupspecial effects guy there,
buddy. Hey, Oh, I didn't say it.
He's there. And they're blowingthe shit out everybody. These
zombies are very gooey. Whenthey get hit by bullets. There's
a lot of blood splatter, andit's a very thick, viscous
blood. It's kind of fun.
Everyone winds up back at thediner to hold up and make a
(01:23:02):
stand. And even though cherryhas had her leg amputated, she
and Ray have passionate lovingsex in the back room. Oh, that's
a very open minded moment. Andthen the film does the one thing
that I really enjoy.
The the projector burns throughthe film.
And we get a title card thatsays missing reel. And when it
(01:23:25):
starts back up again, we're inthe middle of the end of the
third act. And we are in thisbig climactic fight fight scene.
There's all sorts of explosionsgoing on. At one point, the guy
who was piloting the helicoptertilted down to just the right
angle to plow through a bunch ofzombies. And it's a lot of fun.
And also, cherry gets her legreplaced with the machine gun
(01:23:48):
grenade launcher, and no visibleway to actually use it. But it
fires apparently mentally orsomething like that. She just
points it. And it goes where shesays to go. So very over the top
of the movie is almost great.
And that's what makes me soangry about it. There's
Tarantino shows up as amilitary officer who when he
(01:24:11):
finds out Well, he's got controlof these people and he's got
them you know, quarantined andall of this stuff, and he likes
to then rape the women that hegets. And at one point, there's
just a very uncomfortable scenewhere he's gonna rape. One of
the one of the crazy babysittertwins, remember them and
(01:24:36):
his he's gotten the zombie miston him and his balls then start
to melt in a truly disgustingscene because you get to see it.
But he's still intent on rapingthe women and it's just it's
played for laughs and reallydoesn't do it just doesn't feel
(01:24:56):
right. There's something there'ssomething about it that it was
really offensive andYou guys know me, I do not get
offended by anything. I was justlike, this has no place in this
movie. It's just really, reallybad taste. And then it goes into
a very typical kind of thingwhere, you know, it could have
been set up for a perfect sequeland i don't know i as i was
watching this, I was like, Goddammit, there's a lot to like in
(01:25:19):
this. And, and then a lot not tolike, I think Robert Rodriguez
is agood director and a bad writer.
Sure. And he doesn't quite well,he doesn't like he doesn't like
doing three extractor oranything like that he kind of
(01:25:42):
all over the place and I admirehim so much for what he was able
to do with El Mariachi, and thenI love Desperado. I think that's
one of my favorite stupidmovies.
adventures, just theexistence as a filmmaker is
carved out for him. Yeah, basically building his own
studio in his backyard, he canshoot and from beginning to end
(01:26:03):
make a movie on the gear heowns. Now it's like, dude, I
think there are very few peoplewho I am like, I am a fan of
Robert Rodriguez. Although Idon't like much of his movies.
I'm a fan of the person he is.
Yeah, I've got a little bit oftrivia here. Rodriguez first
came up with the idea forplanetarium while making the
(01:26:25):
faculty. He told the ledgerwoodand Josh Hartnett that zombie
movies were about to come backin a major way. This is 1998. So
he had like a line onDawn of the Dead remake and 20
days later and all this stuff, because that wasn't Adele. 2002.
So anyway, he wanted to be therefirst when it happened. So he
(01:26:47):
prepared a script, but he onlygot as far as 30 pages before he
got stuck. And then he gotattached to a bunch of other
projects. The zombie crazehappened just as he predicted
and he was like motherfucker.
Joshua Zach, this bit is aboutJosh Brolin, Joel and Ethan Coen
refuse to give Josh Brolin anaudition for the role of luellen
(01:27:10):
in their movie No Country forOld Men, so he asked Rodriguez
to help him shoot an auditiontape while Brolin was filming
his scenes. Rodriguez shot andTarantino directed the tape
which was shot using a $950,000digital camera.
Marley Shelton was playingBerlin's wife in the movie
agreed to read the lines for LouEllen's wife Carlin gene. And he
(01:27:34):
of course, got the roll. Yeah,so are you kidding? Yeah. When
you can get your audition tapedirected by Tarantino and shot
on a million dollar digitalcamera, then you're probably
worth that.
JOHN carpenter, Vanessa, how areyou man?
going okay. Carpenter, whocomposes the scores to his own
(01:27:55):
films was originally chosen tocompose the score to Planet
terror. Oh, interesting. ButRodriguez ended up taking over
the job as composer instead.
Although excerpts from Escapefrom New York do appear
throughout the film score. Oh,interesting. Interesting, huh?
And if you ever read like RebelWithout a Cause, or an
(01:28:16):
escape, or Yeah, Rebel Without agirl escaped from New York was
his film that was the film thatinspired him to become a
filmmaker and all that. So Ithought that was neat. Here's
interesting one Eric. RoseMcGowan originally suggested her
friend Ray Phillip Santos forthe role of El Rey, but instead
it went to Freddy Rodriguez.
refillable of centers appears inErica my film, sitting on the
(01:28:39):
doorstep briefly.
So that was very strange to seethis name pop up.
In the scene at the beginning ofthe movie in the strip club,
Jerry is zipping up the boot ofher right leg when she says I
need a dramatic change in mylife. That is the leg which is
(01:28:59):
later amputated. Beautiful.
Force.
Here we go. Eric, you know howyour casting agent of your film
cast his own daughter for this?
Do you guys remember in thisscene that
the the wife of Josh Brolin whois played by Marley Shelton, she
(01:29:22):
is she is leaving him and shegoes and gets her son. And then
she's going to go to her dad'splace and and all of this shit
is going down now. So she makesthe son stay in the car but then
she hands him a gun and says ifanybody but me comes, shoot
them. And he says, okay, sheshuts the door. She walks away.
(01:29:44):
We see a flash in the car. Andthe kid has killed himself.
Yeah, this is one of the otherscenes that I was just like
Jesus does not have to be inhere. I anyway, Rodriguez found
the scene where a doctor to godoctor Dakota block Lee
Son Tony in the car with a gunto be so chilling to film. He
didn't want to use anyone else'schildren to play Tony. So he
(01:30:07):
used his own son. Oh, RebelRodriguez so he wouldn't feel as
bad killing a child. Oh my god.
Oh, and I kid went on to have alot of therapy. Apparently,
there is one cut of the moviethat doesn't have him dying. And
there's one copy of that cut.
(01:30:27):
And that is the copy that is atthe Rodriguez house. I gotta
say. He's pretty good with hiskids. Right? Like, he's got an
entire franchise based on it.
Yeah, the idea with thatsharkboy and lavagirl it's just
such a scene that didn't need tobe there. Yeah, like why this?
It was uncomfortable. Becausethe kid is like, six. Yeah.
Super good son. Finally, thetotal body count of planet tear.
(01:30:52):
281 Beautiful. El Rey has 52kills. Sherry darling has 50
kills and Sheriff hegge playedby Michael Biehn has 13 kills
and then, you know, I can't domath, but I don't think that
adds up to 281. So the rest mustbe other people in the film.
Yeah, gotcha. For large cast isthere's a lot going on this
(01:31:13):
almost great. Yeah, and I knowthere are people listening right
now fucking love this movie. AndI get it. There's a lot to like
in it, but not for me. Yeah, both of the both of those films,
I felt wereclose to being really good
double Bella movies and justjust got to miss the mark of the
the idea of doing Grindhousestyle films, and then having the
(01:31:36):
trailers in between and stufflike that. That is a neat idea.
And they do pull that off. Thisdoes feel like a movie from you
know, the early 80s late 70sTarantino's feels a little bit
more like that. But I thinkDeath Proof is maybe his least
the least of his films. I thinkit's I think it's so so and you
know, I don't know. I alwaysenjoyed that proof. But maybe
(01:32:00):
that's just the female and meenjoying those girls just
killing it? I don't know. Butit's, uh, it's been a while
since I've seen it. No. And, andKurt Russell is amazing in it.
The women are amazing. I justfeel like I mean, there's zero
story. Oh, yeah. No, absolutely.
(01:32:20):
Absolutely. I mean, like, it'sdefinitely both of them, I think
suffer from that truncatedsituation. Yeah. Yeah. And they
had the clout and the money togo, Hey, you want to do
something cool. Let's do this.
They did. Yeah. Anyway, who'sgot the next sub genre? I
believe that would be me.
(01:32:41):
doing so well. So yeah, a coupleepisodes. It's been at least two
episodes since my turn. So I youknow, I really love this thing
that keeps happening in moviesthat I thought I hated. But I
think I really like which is theLoop The Loop structure or not
just timely. But let's saysomething just happens. Again,
(01:33:04):
it doesn't necessarily need likein the matrix, for example,
right? You get the deja vu,something that you see repeated
or in memento, where like he'sremembering, but he's living at
the same time. So some kind ofmirroring or doubling up of
something. So I'm going to callit loop but it doesn't have to
be strictly it doesn't have tobe Groundhog's Day kind of does
(01:33:24):
not have to be straight upgroundhog. Groundhog's Day. I'm
big in Groundhog's Day. Allright. Sure. Enjoy.
there so we'll just let you talkand explain that one. I'll just
cut that segmentAlright guys, that sounds fun to
me. Many thanks to everybodyagain, for all the likes the
shares the money, the just beingawesome papers rock. Yeah, we
(01:33:47):
really appreciate it. And wewill really appreciate it again
