Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hello everybody, welcome back to the Bible
Breakdown Podcast with your host, pastor Brandon, today.
1 Chronicles, chapter 23,.
And today's title is God has aministry for everyone.
God has a ministry for everyone.
We're going to be reading aboutthe duties of the priest, and,
if you remember a guy named Ezra, who was a priest and really

(00:21):
one of the ones who helpedcompile a lot of the Old
Testament together, he is theone that is most likely writing
down this chronicling of thenation of Israel, and so he is
very invested in the fact thatGod's house has so many
different people and there's somany opportunities for them to
serve in various ways, and sowe're going to get into that in
just a moment, and I can't waitto talk to you about that.

(00:42):
But, of course, as always, before we do anything else, make
sure you are like sharing andsubscribing to the YouTube
channel and the podcast.
Leave me some comments on theYouTube channel.
I get a chance to read most ofthem and I love interacting with
all of you.
Also on the Bible breakdowndiscussion.
Make sure that you are likingit.
Make sure you're sharingdifferent ones.
They are just throwing out somegold every single day, and I

(01:02):
wish so bad.
Every one of you had a chanceto read what they are writing.
It's better than what I'msaying, to be honest with you.
So make sure you are goingthere and reading because, man,
I'm going to tell you, the morewe dig, the more we find.
And so, if you have your Bibles, I want to open up with me to 1
Chronicles, chapter 23.
Remember, the overall theme iswhen God is with you, there's

(01:24):
always hope.
And that's the whole point ofthis is they're reestablishing
worship, and what they're doingis they're remembering that
worship didn't start with them, but generations before, when
David first set up the temple, the worship of God was important
and that everybody had aministry, everybody had an
opportunity.
Let's read this together.
It's going to be a lot of names, a lot of numbers.

(01:45):
That's just kind of the wayChronicles is, but at the end of
it we're gonna see if God hassomething to say to us today.
Here we go.
1 Chronicles 23, verse 1, saysthis when David was an old man,
he appointed his son Solomon tobe king over Israel.
David summoned all the leadersof Israel, together with the
priests and Levites.
All the Levites who are 30years old or older were counted,

(02:07):
and the total came out to38,000.
Then David said From all theLevites, 24,000 will supervise
the work of the temple of theLord, another 6,000 will serve
as officials and judges, another4,000 will work as gatekeepers
and 4,000 will praise the Lordwith musical instruments I have

(02:28):
made.
Then David divided the Levitesinto divisions and they were
named after the clans anddescendants from the three sons
of Levi, gershon, kohath andMererai.
The Gershonite family units weredefined by the lines of
descendants of Libni and Shemni, the sons of Gershon.
Three of the descendants ofLibni were Jahil, the family

(02:50):
leader, zethem and Joel.
These were the leaders of thefamily of Libni.
The three descendants of Shemniwere Shalemoth, hezel and Haran
.
Four other descendants ofShemni were Jahath, ziza, jerush
and Beriah.
Jahath was the family leaderand Ziza was next.

(03:11):
Jerush and Beriah was countedas a single family because
neither had many sons.
Four of the descendants ofKohath were Amram, izjar, hebron
and Uziel.
The sons of Amram were Aaronand Moses.
Aaron and his descendants wereset apart to dedicate the most
holy things and to offersacrifices in the Lord's

(03:33):
presence, and to serve the Lordand to pronounce blessings in
his name forever.
As for Moses, the man of God,his sons were included in the
tribe of Levi.
The sons of Moses were Gershomand Eleazar.
The descendants of Gershom wasZerubbel, the family leader, and
Eleazar had only one son, rehobiah, and the family leader,

(03:56):
rehobiah, had numerousdescendants.
The descendants of Izharincluded Sheremeth in the family
and it was the family leader.
The descendants of Hebronincluded Jeriah, the family
leader, amariah II, jehazel IIIand Jechamim IV.
The descendants of Uzelincluded Micah, the family

(04:18):
leader, and Ishaah II.
The descendants of Mereraiincluded Mahali and Mushi.
The sons of Mahali were Eleazarand Kish.
Eleazar died with no sons, onlydaughters.
His daughters married theircousins, the sons of Kish.
Three of the descendants ofMushi were Mahali, edar and

(04:38):
Jeremoth.
Three of the descendants ofMushi were Mahali, idar and
Jeremoth.
These were the descendants ofLevi by clans.
The leaders of the familygroups registered carefully by
each name.
Each had to be 20 years old orolder to qualify for service in
the Lord's house.
David said the Lord, the God ofIsrael, has given us peace and

(05:03):
he will always live in Jerusalem.
Now the Levites will no longerneed to carry the tabernacle and
its furnishings from place toplace.
In accordance with David'sfinal instructions, all the
Levites 20 years old or olderwere registered for service.
The work of the Levites was toassist the priests, the
descendants of Aaron, as theyserved at the house of the Lord.
They also took care of thecourtyards and side rooms,

(05:26):
helped perform the ceremonialpurifications and served in many
other ways in the house of God.
They were in charge of thesacred bread that was set out on
the table, the choice flour forthe grain offerings and the
wafers made without yeast, thecakes cooked with olive oil and
the other mixed breads.
They were also responsible tocheck all the weights and

(05:49):
measures, and each morning andevening they stood before the
Lord to sing songs of thanks andto praise Him.
They assisted with the burntofferings that were presented to
the Lord on the Sabbath days,at the new moon celebrations and
at all the appointed festivals.
The required number of Levitesthat served in the Lord's
presence at all times, followingall the procedures that had

(06:13):
been given, and so under thesupervision of the priest, the
Levites watched over thetabernacle and the temple and
faithfully carried out theduties of service.
So, as you can see, whathappened was is when they were
in the wilderness.
They needed all these differentpeople to carry the tabernacle.

(06:34):
The tabernacle was basicallythis glorified tent, and so you
had people that would carry thetent poles and things.
You had people that would carrythe outer skins and things that
would cover it over.
Then you had people that wouldcarry the furniture, the holy
furniture, and then you hadpeople who would serve in the
tabernacle, so you had all thisgoing on.
Well, david is saying the timeof wandering is over, but you

(06:58):
still have ministry to do, andso we gave them all something to
do.
You know, one of the things Ilove about being part of a local
body of believers is that weall have an opportunity to take
part.
One of the things I'm sopassionate about because I've
seen both how wonderful it isand also the destructive power
of not having it is that, as aChrist follower, we should

(07:21):
always look to be a contributor, not a consumer.
If we're not careful, we cantreat church like McDonald's we
go in, we order what we want Ifwe like it, we throw a tip when
we get it and we walk out and welet other people clean up the
mess.
Right, that's a restaurant.
That's what you're supposed todo at a restaurant.
Right, you're supposed to go,do all those kinds of things.
This is not my deal, this isyour deal.

(07:42):
You're just here to serve meand I give you money, and that's
how it works.
Well, if we're not careful, welook at church that way we come
in, we sit down, you know themusic better be the right level,
can't be too loud, you betterbe good, but coffee better be
hot, all this kind of stuff, andif I like it I'll throw you a
tip as I walk out the door.
And then church becomes aconsumeristic product.

(08:04):
And then we wonder why ourrelationship with God is so
shallow and and not quoteunquote meeting our needs and
you know we want.
We always hop from church tochurch to church because we're
treating the family of God andwe're preaching treating that's
the word I'm trying to say, treating all those things like a
consumeristic product.

(08:25):
But now, when it comes to ourfamily at home, I don't think
and I hope we don't treat ourfamily like that.
We don't come into theafternoon and as long as
everybody serves us right andeverything is perfect, we kind
of throw a tip at the door andwe walk out the next day.
That's not it.
We're part of a family,everybody in.
We all have chores we do, weall take part in this.
We share in the victories, weshare in the defeats.

(08:47):
We grow old together.
That's what a family does.
That's what a spiritual familyis supposed to do.
We're supposed to be part ofthe body of Christ, not the
drive-through of Christ, andeveryone has a ministry to do.
Can I tell you that when I'veseen people who struggle and
they would self-admittedly sayI'm just not content with my

(09:08):
relationship with God, I just Idon't feel, I feel shallow in my
relationship with God when Ilook at their life.
What I see a lot of times is Isee that they have been taught
to see church as a consumeristicproduct.
They come in and they expect tosee a show, a weekly concert, a
weekly pep talk, and they don'tserve, they don't do anything.
They get a free cup of coffee, free child care for a couple of

(09:30):
hours and then they go home.
Well, yeah, because church issupposed to be a place where we
do ministry with one another.
We give and receive ministry.
So then we don't want to consume, we want to contribute.
We come in and we have someskin in the game.
We come in and we use our gifts, talents, abilities and

(09:51):
opportunities to stand alongsideour brothers and our sisters
and we make a differencetogether, Because if we don't,
we just end up becoming spoiled, and there's not a lot of use
for a spoiled kid.
But when we come in together,we make a difference.
But when we come in together,we make a difference.
And so I want to encourage youto think about for a moment if

(10:14):
God has given you a ministrygifting and he has everybody's a
10 at something Like whateverit is.
You might be great at cooking, you might be great at public
speaking, you might be great athosting people, you might be
great at just love kids.
You might be good withtechnology, you might be a
musician, you might be reallygood at just acts of generosity,
mercy, just all kinds ofwhatever it is that you just
naturally do.
Well, you can use that asministry, and ministry is

(10:37):
anything you do as an act ofworship to serve somebody else.
Can I tell you your life wouldchange.
I know that's a big statement, but your life would change if
you got off of the sideline andyou got into the game and
started serving someone else.
I know there's people thatlisten to this all over the
world at this point, and some ofyou don't have a church close

(10:59):
to you where you can go which iswhy I love technology so much
and I'm grateful that we get todo this together.
But for some of us, we have 10churches within walking distance
of our house and we don't go toany of them.
When we do, we go occasionally, and when we do, we sit down and
we wait for someone else toserve us.
Can I tell you there's timesand seasons when you need that.

(11:19):
There's times and seasons whenyou're just exhausted and you're
going through a season and youjust need a safe place to sit
and rest.
But can I tell you that shouldbe a season, not a lifestyle.
That there's something thatyou're missing if you never
become part of a spiritualfamily.
You never get on a teamsomewhere and serve somebody

(11:40):
else and you say I am not hereto be served, I am here to serve
.
Put me in the game.
Put me wherever you want me,I'm here to serve.
Put me in the game.
Put me wherever you want me,I'm here to serve.
When you start honoring God andyou start tithing to your local
congregation, whether the musicis good or the music is bad,
whether the preaching is good orthe preaching is bad, as long
as it's not heretical.
If they're preaching somethingagainst the Bible, then yeah,

(12:01):
run, run as fast as you can.
But if they're preaching, howabout this?
Let's just say that yourpreacher loves Jesus.
Your pastor loves Jesus.
He loves God's word, but hecan't preach to save his life.
That is not his fault.
He's probably trying the besthe can.
Can I tell you, I've never met apastor yet who's not trying.
He just may not be the bestspeaker in the world.
God called him anyway and he'sjust trying to be faithful to

(12:24):
what God's called me to do.
That's me.
I'm not a great public speaker,but I really love Jesus and I
want to share what God isteaching me with other people.
Can I tell you, those musicianson the stage, they're not
always going to get it perfect, but you know what they're trying
.
None of them get up there andtry to do bad.
They're trying, but that's partof what a spiritual family was
supposed to be.
Read the New Testament.
It was never supposed to be aconcert.

(12:47):
It was never supposed to be aconsumeristic product.
It was supposed to be aspiritual family and we all
served one another.
And so God has a ministry foreveryone and we're okay without
you, but we'll never be as goodas we could be with you.
And so your next step is are youcurrently serving at your local

(13:08):
church?
If not, start serving.
Find a place where you canplant your life and you say,
unless God moves me, unlesssomething heretical happens, I'm
going to be here in the gooddays and I'm definitely going to
be here in the bad days, because somebody needs to stand
and be in that gap and intercedefor that church family and

(13:29):
watch what happens.
Your life will thrive as youplant yourself, you serve and
realize God has a ministry foryou, and I can't wait to hear in
the comments below and in thedays ahead what happens when you
plant yourself in acongregation and you say, coach,
put me in the game, watch whatGod does in your life.
You have a ministry and youhave a purpose.

(13:50):
Let's pray God.
Thank you so much for today.
Thank you, god, that you see us, you know us and you love us.
I pray, god, that you will haveyour way in our lives.
I pray God that you will helpevery one of us realize you have
made us for a purpose and, lord, one of those purposes is to be
part of a local body ofbelievers.
I know, god, that a lot of timesthere's a thousand reasons why

(14:13):
we have trouble plantingourselves, maybe from unmet
expectations or pain or hurt.
But I pray, god, we will notlet past pain destroy future
opportunities to love and to beloved.
I pray, lord, that you'll beginthe work of healing, begin the
work of exciting our lives ofwhat could be, and help us take

(14:33):
that next step so we can be partof something bigger than
ourselves.
I thank you for all things.
In Jesus' name, we pray amenand what God's word says in 1
Chronicles 29,.
I know, my God, that youexamine our hearts and rejoice
when you find integrity there.
I love you.
God sees you.
I'll see you tomorrow for 1Chronicles, chapter 24.
