Speaker 1 (00:01):
Well, hello everybody .
Welcome back to the BibleBreakdown podcast with your host
, pastor Brandon, today.
1 Chronicles 24, and today'stitle is the Family Business.
The Family Business and I lovethe idea of having legacies that
travel across generations.
I've got one in my life that iskind of interesting to me.

(00:21):
I don't know if maybe you do,but if not, I want to talk about
the idea of beginning a familylegacy in your life.
We're going to get to that injust a moment.
But, as always, if you likewhat we're doing here, make sure
you like, share and subscribeto the YouTube channel and the
podcast.
Make sure you're leaving uscomments on the YouTube videos.
I love interacting with you.
Also, make sure you we dig themore we find.

(00:49):
If you have your Bible and wantto open up with me to 1
Chronicles, chapter 24, remember, most likely 1 and 2 Chronicles
was written by a guy named Ezrawho was a priest.
He was one of the ones whoorchestrated the worship of God
to the nation of Israel, and sohe's writing about this and he's
writing about this lineage ofpeople going down, of the
different priests and theirduties and the different ones in

(01:10):
the family, and all of thesewere part of this extended
family and I love the idea of asa family.
They all worshiped God together.
It'd have been really nice iftheir names were Joe, bob, you
know, simon, something like that, but no, no, they're very hard.
Now, of course, it's importantto realize these names are in a

(01:31):
different language and at adifferent time, so they weren't
as different as we think theyare now.
They were probably the same.
As what, if you speak Englishas your primary language?
As Bob, bill, george, jack, jill, all that.
It's just different names,different times.
But we're going to read thesenames, watch how this one big
family is all part of the familybusiness, and then we're going

(01:51):
to see if maybe there's a nextstep for us to take as well.
We get to the end of this.
You ready?
Let's read this together.
Let's all laugh at PastorBrandon who cannot say these
Middle Eastern names.
Let's read them together.
1 Chronicles 24, verse 1 of theNew Living Translation says this
this is how Aaron's descendants, the priests, were divided into
groups for service.
The sons of Aaron were Nadab, abihu, eleazar and Ithamar, but

(02:17):
Nadab and Abihu died beforetheir father and they had no
sons.
Remember?
They died because theydisobeyed and desecrated the
holy things of God.
So Eleazar and Ithamar wereleft to carry on as priests With

Eleazar.
All the tasks were assigned tothe various groups by the means
of sacred lots so that nopreference would be shown.
Four there were many qualifiedofficials serving God in the

(03:03):
sanctuary from among thedescendants of both Eleazar and

Shemaiah, son of Nathanael ofthe Levite, acted as secretary
and wrote down the names andassignments in the presence of
the king and the officials, zadok, the priest Ahimelech, the

(05:11):

The leader of Rehoboam.
The leader of Rehoboam, theleader of Shemir, along with

The descendants of Kish, theleader of Jamail, and the
descendants of Mushi, theleaders of Mahali, idar and
Jeremoth.

(05:54):
These were the descendants ofLevi in their various families.
Like the descendants of Aaron, they were assigned to their
duties by means of sacred lots, without regard for their age or
rank.
Lots were drawn in the presenceof King David, zadok, ahimelech
and the family leaders of thepriests and the Levites.
Wow, I don't know if younoticed, because we kind of get

(06:16):
all tangled up in all thosenames, but they had to cast lots
, roll the dice to see who gotto serve at certain times, and
they had to do it in front ofthe king and for the high priest
and for the family leaders, because everybody wanted to do
it, everybody wanted theopportunity to be able to serve,

(06:37):
so they had to take turns.
Wow, isn't that amazing tothink that they had so created
space for God in their livesthat it went from being a chore
and it went from being somethingthey had to do to where they
had to take turns to where theyhad to make sure it was done
fairly.
Now, wait a minute, I want toserve.
No, no, I want to serve.

(06:57):
I tell you what?
Let's just roll the dice so wecan keep it fair.
We're all take turns, okay, fine, that's the only way I'm
going to do it.
As long as I better get my turn, I better get my turn.
Isn't that amazing?
What would it look like in ourlife if we created a family
business, a legacy that we serve.
We serve one another, we serveour community, we serve in our

(07:19):
church, and I was telling you atthe beginning of the podcast I
have a family legacy that passesdown and that is that the
firstborn son in the Cannonfamily's name is James.
My name is James Brandon Cannon.
My father's name is JamesWesley Cannon.
My grandfather's name is JamesErnest Cannon.

(07:40):
Excuse me, before him is aJames Cannon and before him is a
James Cannon.
There's just James is all overthe place, right.
And so for several generationsthe firstborn son's name is
James and hopefully they're notchoking as bad as I am right now
, but they all had.
It was just this thing that waspassed down, and so my dad

(08:01):
didn't have much of a choice.
I mean, he was going to followthe family legacy and so his
firstborn son only son's namewas James.
I have two daughters, so Idon't know if he's going to try
to skip a generation.
So one of my kids has a son.
I'm going to see if I can sneakin the name James just because
right.
But what would it look like inour family if there was a legacy

(08:21):
passed down?
Not only do we serve God, butwe love it.
We serve God because we want to.
We serve others because we wantto A legacy of serving Well,
pastor, I don't have that legacyin my history.
I don't have people that didthat.
That's perfect, that's fine.
You get to be number one, youget to set it right.
Sometimes that's the best way, because you don't have to fix

(08:41):
the mistakes of the past.
You get to be the first one.
Well, pastor, I don't have afamily.
It doesn't have to be yourimmediate family.
What about your extended family?
What about those around you?
What about your spiritualfamily, your church family?
Well, pastor, my family'salready grown, they're already
out of the house.
Well, what about those thatyou're around?
What about that next generation?
Anybody you can.

(09:03):
What if you started today tosay you know what?
I want to set up a legacy wherewe're not just serving together
, but we love it.
We love it so much because it'snot about the thing.
It's about who we're doing thething for.
I'm not handing out worshipguides at my local church or
serving food over here.
I'm not serving in our kids'life area.

(09:24):
I'm not doing that because of athing.
I'm doing it because of who I'mdoing it for, because I'm part
of something bigger than myself.
And when I think about thegoodness of God, all he's done
for me, all that God has meantin my life, it is my honor and
my privilege to serve the Lord.

(09:44):
What if we did that?
What if we set the foundation?
We serve God and we do it as anhonor.
What would it do?
What would it do?
So our next step is, first ofall, to carry that attitude
ourself I don't have to, I getto and then start instilling
that in others we don't have to,it's a get to.
And as we serve together, webegin to realize that that

(10:08):
attitude is contagious, thatwhen we don't live for ourselves
, we live for others.
It is amazing what God does inour life.
What do you need to do?
You need to course correct ordo you need to step in even
further?
And some opportunities allaround you.
Let's pray together, god.
Thank you so much for today.
Thank you, god, that you see usand you know us.

(10:28):
You're for us, us and you loveus.
Lord, I pray that you willbring an excitement into our
lives to realize what the honoris to serve the Lord, the honor
to realize, lord, thateverything we do as an act of
worship is an opportunity tobring you glory.
Lord, sometimes we get so busythinking about and worrying

(10:48):
about the next answer to prayerwe forget about all you've
already done.
I pray you'll remind us of yourgoodness, remind us of how
you're for us and because ofthat, god, it is our honor to be
part of the family business.
We thank you for all thingstoday.
In Jesus' name, we pray Amenand amen.
Well, don't forget God's wordsays in 1 Chronicles, chapter 29
, name we pray Amen and amen.

(11:08):
Well, don't forget God's wordsays in first Chronicles,
chapter 29,.
I know, my God, that youexamine our hearts and rejoice
when you find integrity there.
God sees you, god knows you andGod is for you.
I love you.
I'll see you tomorrow for firstChronicles, chapter 25.
