Speaker 1 (00:01):
Well, everybody, welcome back to the Bible
Breakdown Podcast with your host, pastor Brandon, today.
1 Chronicles, chapter 28,.
And today's title is God is Badat Hide and Seek.
God is Bad at Hide and Seek.
I don't know if you ever playedhide and seek a whole lot, but
when I was a kid I didn't playit that much.
But when I was an adult Iplayed it a whole lot because I

(00:23):
played with my kids much.
But when I was an adult Iplayed it a whole lot because I
played with my kids.
And when my kids were littlethey loved playing hide and seek
with me because I was bad at it, and I was bad at it on purpose
, right.
When they were real little wewould go.
We love to play flashlight hideand seek.
Well, obviously that makes itmuch more difficult, unless you
had somebody purposely holdingthe light up so you could see,

(00:44):
right.
And I would do that because mygirls at that time were young
and they couldn't find anything,right.
I mean, they were three andfour years old and so they would
get discouraged pretty easy.
And so what I would have to dois I would have my flashlight
and, if you can kind of picturein your mind's eye.
It's a dark room but it's funbecause we have the flashlights
and I would just sit there andjust wave it just back and forth

(01:05):
and be like, oh well, I hopeyou can find me.
And I'd hear them just gigglingDaddy, I see you and come run
and find me.
And I mean, I just acted like Iwas so horrible at it because
the goal of it wasn't for me tostop them from finding me.
The goal was the joy ofdiscovery.
It was the whole goal of whatit was.

(01:25):
Well, today we're going to readabout something and I want to
maybe reframe for us somethingthat I read, a book one time
called the God Chasers, and whatI think the author was trying
to go for and what some of ussometimes took away from it
wasn't exactly what was intended.
So we're going to talk aboutthat in just a moment and the
idea of maybe the reason why wepursue God is not because he's
trying to hide from us, but it'sabout the joy of discovery.

(01:48):
We'll get into that in just amoment.
But, as always, if you likewhat we're doing here, make sure
you like share, subscribe tothe YouTube channel and the
podcast.
Make sure on the YouTubechannel.
You're leaving us some comments.
It helps us to kind of interactwith one another, and also for
all of us we gather together atthe Bible Breakdown Discussion,
where they do an amazing jobwriting devotions for us every
single day, and it is an honor, because the more we dig, the

(02:08):
more we find.
And so, if you have your Bibles,I want to open up with me to 1
Chronicles, chapter 28.
We're at the place now whereDavid you know we've been
talking about all the lineageand all the people and all the
ones who served in the kingdom, and especially because you know
Ezra, most likely the guy whowrote this.
He was a priest, and so he'swriting about the different jobs
and roles because that wouldhave been important to him.
We're at the place now whereDavid is giving instruction to

(02:31):
Solomon, because Solomon isgoing to be the one who is going
to have to build the temple.
And David he has spent his lifepursuing God and going after
God, and now he's passing it offto his son and he's given him
these instructions.
And, once again, remember whatI was talking about, and that
was that maybe the goal of hideand seek isn't necessarily about
hiding, but it's about thethrill of discovery.

(02:54):
We're going to read thistogether and then we're going to
finish it up at the end andtalk about how maybe God is
wanting you to pursue him, notbecause he's trying to play hard
to find or hard to get, butit's the joy of finding him in
our life.
You ready, here we go.
First Chronicles, chapter 28,verse 1, says this David
summoned all the officials ofIsrael to Jerusalem the leaders

(03:17):
of the tribes, commanders of thearmy divisions and the other
generals and captains, theoverseers of all the royal
property and livestock, thepalace officials, the mighty men
and all the other bravewarriors in the kingdom.
David rose to his feet and saidmy brothers and my people, it
is my desire to build a templewhere the ark of the Lord's
covenant, god's footstool, couldrest permanently.

(03:40):
I made the necessarypreparations for building it,
but God said to me you must notbuild a temple to honor my name,
for you are a warrior and youhave shed much blood.
Yet the Lord, the God of Israel, has chosen me from among all
my father's family, to be kingover Israel forever, for he has
chosen the tribe of Judah torule, and from among the

(04:01):
families of, he chose myfather's family and from among
my father's sons, the Lord waspleased to make me king over all
Israel.
And from among the sons theLord has given me many, he chose
Solomon to succeed me on thethrone of Israel and to rule
over the Lord's kingdom.

(04:22):
He said to me and if hecontinues to obey my commands
and regulations as he does now,I will make his kingdom last
forever.
So now, with God as our witnessand in the sight of all Israel,

(04:44):
the Lord's assembly, I give youthis charge Be careful to obey
all the commands of the Lord, your God, so that you may
continue to possess this goodland and leave it to your
children as a permanentinheritance.
And Solomon, my son, learn toknow the God of your ancestors
intimately.

(05:04):
Worship and serve him with yourwhole heart and a willing mind,
for the Lord sees every heartand knows every plan and thought
.
If you seek him, you will findhim, but if you forsake him, he
will reject you forever.
So take this seriously.
The Lord has chosen you tobuild a temple in his sanctuary.

(05:25):
Be strong and do the work.
Then David gave Solomon theplans for the temple and its
surroundings, including theentry room and the storehouses,
the upstairs room, the innerroom, the inner sanctuary, which
was the place of atonement.
David also gave Solomon and allthe plans he had in mind for
the courtyard of the Lord'stemple, the outside rooms, the

(05:47):
treasuries and the rooms for thegifts dedicated to the Lord and
the rooms for the giftsdedicated to the Lord.
The king also gave Solomon theinstructions concerning the work
of the various divisions ofpriests and Levites in the
temple of the Lord and he gavespecifications for the items in
the temple that were to be usedfor worship.
David gave the instructionsregarding how much gold and

(06:07):
silver should be used to makethe items needed for service.
He told Solomon the amount ofgold needed and, for the gold
lampstands and the lamps, theamount of silver for the silver
lampstands and lamps, dependingon how each one would be used.
He designated the amount ofgold for the table in which the
bread of presence would beplaced and the amount of silver
for the other tables.
David also designated theamount of gold for the solid

(06:29):
gold meat hooks used to handlethe sacrificial meat and for the
basins, the pitchers, thedishes, as well as the amount of
silver for every dish.
He designated the amount ofrefined gold for the altar of
incense.
Finally, he gave him a plan forthe Lord's chariot, the gold
cherubim, whose wings wouldstretch out over the Ark of the

(06:50):
Lord's covenant.
By the way, what that was is,it was just something that the
Ark of the covenant would be,and then over top of it would be
like just this special thingthat they called the chariot
that would just house the Ark ofthe covenant Verse 19,.
Every part of this plan, davidtold Solomon, was given to me in
writing from the hand of theLord, so, or, as it also, from

(07:12):
the direction of God.
I'll cover that in just amoment.
Then David continued Be strongand courageous and do the work.
Don't be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord, god, my God, is
with you and he will not failyou or forsake you.
He will see to it that all thework related to the temple of
the Lord is finished correctly.
The various divisions ofpriests and Levites will serve

(07:35):
in the temple of God, and otherswith skills of every kind will
volunteer, and the officials ofthe entire nation are at your
command.
So isn't that interesting?
I don't know if you've everknown this, but I didn't know
this until I started studying.
It is we have this idea thatSolomon built the temple, and he
did, but he built the templeafter very specific instructions

(07:59):
from his father, david.
So in a very real way, davidwas the one that was responsible
for the temple, and you noticewhat he said.
He said all of these veryspecific instructions I got from
the very hand of God.
Well, one of the things we knowabout the tabernacle, which was
very similar to the temple andwas built by Moses originally,

(08:20):
was the Bible said that theybuilt the tabernacle after the
pattern that God had given Moses, and a lot of people think that
pattern is a drawing of anoriginal, and so many people
think that there's somethingabout heaven that is laid out in
a pattern that is typical ofthe tabernacle and that what

(08:42):
actually was happening is it wasa symbol of the courts of
heaven that the tabernacle wasdesigned after.
Well, the temple looksextremely similar to the
tabernacle.
Well, the temple looksextremely similar to the
tabernacle, and so I wonder ifit's possible that at some point
God showed David that sameheavenly throne room and wrote
down the very specifics, andthen David handed it to Solomon,

(09:04):
and so something happened inDavid's life where he had this
very specific plan given to himby God.
And now he gives it to Solomonvery specific plan given to him
by God.
And now he gives it to Solomon.
And then he tells Solomon ifyou want to have God in your
life, do this.
If you want to learn to knowGod, worship him, serve him with

(09:27):
your whole heart and your mind.
And then I love what he saysright here in verse number nine.
He says this if you seek him,you will find him.
Can I tell you something aboutGod?
God is purposefully horrible athide and seek.
I was telling you at thebeginning of our time together
that there was a book that cameout a few years ago called the
God Chasers and it was about aguy named Tommy Tenney and he
talked about how he would playhide and seek with his kids and

(09:49):
he would hide just behind a door.
And he would say as he wouldhide behind the door, his kids
would come and look for him andhe would hear them go Dad, are
you there?
And almost sound like they weregetting desperate.
And as they got desperate hewould reveal himself to them and
many people thought that meantthat what God will do is he will
hide just at the point of yourdesperation and then reveal
himself.
Well, can I tell you, I thinkthat we missed the point.

(10:14):
I think, and I hope, what TommyTenney was saying and I enjoyed
the book was to say that when weseek after God, god wants to be
found.
I think that's what Tommy wastrying to say, because that is
truly the heart of God, is thatGod is not trying to make you
desperate, he's not trying tofrustrate you, he's not trying
to in some way exasperate you.
And then, when you get to theend of your strength, then God

(10:38):
goes oh, here I am, but actuallyjust like what I was telling
you.
When my kids were little, Ialready knew that my ability to
hide far outstretched theirability to find me.
My ability to hide far exceededtheir ability to find me.
So what I would do is I wouldhide, but I would hide in such
obvious places and I would wavemy flashlight and say out loud

(11:02):
oh I wonder if they'll find me,to make it so obvious that if
they even came close to lookingfor me, they would find me.
Can I tell you that's what Ithink God does.
I think that what David wastelling Solomon is if you'll
just seek him, if you will justcome after him, you'll find me.
Can I tell you that's what Ithink God does.
I think that what David wastelling Solomon is if you'll
just seek him, if you will justcome after him, you'll find him.
God is purposely really bad athide and seek.

(11:23):
So how do we seek God?
By daily doing what we aredoing, by going to his word, one
chapter at a time, and sayingGod, I'm not trying to conquer
your word, I'm trying to letyour word conquer me.
I'm going one chapter at a timebecause I got the rest of my
life and then I got all ofeternity, but I want to learn
more about you.
And then we make an appointmentwith God and we pray and we

(11:45):
talk to him.
Prayer is not an agenda meetingwith business items that we
have to cover.
It's fellowship, it's we'respending time seeking after God.
And can I tell you something?
God wants to be found.
He's not trying to hide from you, he's not trying to exasperate
you.
He is earnestly wanting you.

(12:05):
The Bible says draw close toGod and God will draw close to
you.
So I want to give you achallenge today.
I challenge you to seek afterGod, to find time to say, god, I
want to know you more.
And to the level of yoursincerity, you will find God
revealing himself to you.
I would just tell you, if youjust don't want to people used

(12:27):
to say I just say and watch whatGod does Well, he won't do much
right.
If you just say, oh God, youknow, if you're out there and
show yourself to me, you mayfind him responding in kind.
But if you sincerely say God,if you're real, if you truly are
close to me, I don't care howyou do it, but I want to see you
Watch what God does, watch howGod reveals himself to you.

(12:51):
I want to tell you I can't waitto hear in the comments, I
can't wait to hear on ourFacebook group, what God does
when we sincerely, over time, apply ourselves to know him,
watch what he does in our livestogether.
Let's pray together, god, thankyou so much for today.
Thank you, god, that you'rewith us and you're for us.
I'm thankful, god, as we getready to end our time in
Colossians excuse me, chronicles, lord that you are setting the

(13:14):
tone for what you're going tocontinue to do in our life, that
when we turn our lives over toyou, there's always hope.
I pray, god, that you will keepyour promise.
Where your word says if we willseek you, we will find you, and
I know that that word is true.
So I pray today, as we seek you, you'll reveal yourself to us
so we can know you more.
In Jesus' name, we pray, amen, amen.

(13:35):
Well, god's word says in 1Chronicles 29, 17,.
I know, my God, that youexamine our hearts and you
rejoice when you find integritythere.
God knows you, god sees you andGod loves you, and I love you
and I'll see you tomorrow forthe final chapter, 1 Chronicles
29.
