Have you ever felt the profound joy that comes with selfless giving? Join me, Pastor Brandon, as we wrap up our series on 1 Chronicles with chapter 29, where we celebrate the beauty of generosity. We delve into King David's heartfelt plea to the Israelites, urging them to contribute to the temple's construction and to rejoice in the act of giving itself. As we pore over this historical moment, I share insights on how the community's collective efforts, inspired by David's own munificence, culminated in a wave of praise and worship. This episode isn't just a history lesson; it's an invitation for you to look within and find the places in your life where you can give freely, embracing the transient nature of our earthly journey and the everlasting impact of our offerings.

This conversation also takes a turn towards the cultural conversation on tithing, confronting the contemporary shift towards individualism and consumerism. We look at the teachings of Malachi 3 and how they resonate with the act of giving, not for the benefit of receiving, but for the profound connection and trust it builds with our Creator. As we prepare to move forward to explore 1 Thessalonians, we stand in gratitude, reflecting on the hope and companionship God promises us, as showcased through David's story. Open your heart to this episode, and may it serve as a reminder of the joy that awaits when we give with purity and live with gratitude.

Speaker 1 (00:00):
Well, hello everybody .
Welcome back to the BibleBreakdown podcast with your host
, pastor Brandon, today, thefinal chapter 1 Chronicles,
chapter 29.
Today's title is Freely youhave Received, freely Give.
Freely you have Received, freely Give, can I tell you,
when I was a kid, someone toldme it is more blessed to give

(00:21):
than to receive.
I was so excited about thatphrase Because you know what
that meant.
That meant it was such awonderful opportunity for other
people to experience theblessing of giving to me.
I really did think I was like,hey, that's a wonderful phrase.
You really should try that outand give me something right?
But as I have grown, I havestarted to learn it really is
such a blessing to be able togive than to receive in all

(00:44):
these different kinds of ways.
And we're going to get to seethat today, as David gives the
nation of Israel a chance togive to God and watch what
happens, and maybe it will giveus a pattern of what we can do
in our life to both God and toothers.
We'll get into that in just amoment, as always, but if you
like what we're doing here, makesure you like, share, subscribe
to the YouTube channel and thepodcast.
I see more of you leaving ussome five-star reviews on the

(01:08):
podcast and letting us know howyou're engaging with God's Word.
Thank you so much for doingthat.
It means the world to us and italso helps us become more
discoverable on the differentalgorithms and things like that.
So thank you so much for doingthat.
Thank you for leaving commentson the YouTube channel.
It really does help us toengage with God's word.
And then always we all gathertogether at the Bible Breakdown
Discussion on Facebook, and themore we dig, the more we find,

(01:31):
and so if you have your Bibles, you want to open up with us.
We're finishing up 1 Chronicles,chapter 29.
And then, if you remember, chronicles was actually
originally written as one bookof the Bible, and so 1
Chronicles and 2 Chronicles gotogether.
So, even though this is the endof 1 Chronicles, we're going to
pick back up with 2 Chronicles, chapter 1, in a few days.
We're going to cover 1Thessalonians in between there,

(01:54):
because it's kind of our flowright now, but this finishes 1
Chronicles.
And remember, the overall themeis that when God is with you,
there's always hope, and whatthe nation of Israel has learned
up to this point is that God iswith them.
They're getting ready to buildthe temple and they've been
reminded of all the wonderfulthings that God has done for
them.

(02:14):
And then David gives them anopportunity to become part of
the process.
And so let's read this togetherand let's see what God's word
would say to us as we read it,you ready?
First, chronicles 29, finishingup this book, verse one says
this then King David turned tothe entire assembly and said my
son Solomon, whom God hasclearly chosen as the next king

(02:35):
of Israel, is still young andinexperienced.
The work ahead is enormous, forthe temple he will build is not
for mere mortals, it is for theLord, god himself.
Using every resource at mycommand, I have gathered as much
as I could for building thetemple of my God.
Now there is enough gold, silver, bronze, iron and wood,

(02:55):
as well as great quantities ofonyx and other precious stones,
costly jewels and all kinds offine stone and marble.
And now, because of my devotionto the temple of my God, I am
giving all of my own privatetreasures of gold and silver to
help in the construction.
This is in addition to thebuilding materials I have
already collected for His holytemple.
I am donating more than listento this more than 112 tons of

(03:22):
gold from Orpheor, 226 tons ofrefined silver to be used for
overlaying the walls of thebuildings and for the other gold
and silver work to be done bythe craftsmen.
Now then, who will follow myexample and give offerings to
the Lord today?
Then the family leaders and theleaders of the tribes of Israel

(03:43):
, the generals and the captainsof the army and the king's
administrative officers all gavewillingly For the construction
of the temple of God.
They gave about 188 tons ofgold, 10,000 gold coins, 375
tons of silver, 675 tons ofbronze, 3,750 tons of iron.

(04:07):
They also contributed numerousprecious stones, which were
deposited in the treasury of thehouse of the Lord under the
care of Jahil, the descendant ofGershon, verse 9,.
The people rejoiced over theofferings, for they had given
freely and wholeheartedly to theLord, and King David was filled
with joy.
Then David praised the Lord inthe presence of the whole

(04:30):
assembly.
O Lord, the God of our ancestor, israel, may you be praised
forever and ever.
Yours, o Lord, is the greatness, the power, the glory, the
victory and the majesty.
Everything in heaven and onearth is yours, o Lord, and this
is your kingdom.
We adore you as the one who isover all things.

(04:51):
Wealth and honor come from youalone, for you rule over
everything.
Power and might are in yourhand and at your discretion.
People are made great and givenstrength.
Oh, our God, we thank you andpraise your glorious name.
But who am I and who are mypeople that you could give

(05:13):
anything to you, that we couldgive anything to you?
Everything we have comes fromyou.
We give you only what you firstgave us.
We are here for only a moment, visitors and strangers in the
land, as our ancestors werebefore us.
Our days on earth are like apassing shadow, gone so soon

(05:33):
without a trace.
Oh Lord, our God, even thismaterial we have gathered to
build a temple to honor yourname comes from you.
It all belongs to you.
I know, my God, that youexamine our hearts and rejoice
when you find integrity there.
You know I have done all ofthis with good motives and I
have watched your people offertheir gifts willingly and

(05:56):
joyously.
Oh Lord, the God of ourancestor, abraham Isaac, israel,
make your people always want toobey you.
See to it that their love foryou never changes.
Give my son Solomon thewholehearted desire to obey your
commands, laws and decrees todo everything necessary to build
this temple for which I havemade these preparations.

(06:19):
Then David said to the wholeassembly give praise to the Lord
, your God.
And the entire assembly praisedthe Lord, the God of their
ancestors, and they bowed lowand knelt before the Lord, their
King.
So basically, they had church, man, they had a good time
because God had done amazingthings, and I love how he said.
By the way, he said that all ofthis is yours anyway, god.

(06:42):
So we don't really lose in this.
So we'll get to that in just amoment.
Let's finish up this chapter andthen let's finish up the day.
Verse 21 says this the next daythey brought 1,000 bulls, 1,000
rams and 1,000 male lambs asburnt offerings to the Lord.
They also brought liquidofferings and many other
sacrifices on behalf of allIsrael.
They feasted and drank in theLord's presence with great joy

(07:04):
that day and again they crownedDavid's son as their new king.
They anointed him before theLord as their leader and they
anointed Zadok as priest.
So Solomon took the throne ofthe Lord in place of his father,
david, and he succeeded ineverything, and all Israel
obeyed him.
All the officials and warriorsand sons of the king David

(07:30):
pledged their loyalty to KingSolomon, and the Lord exalted
Solomon in the sight of allIsrael and he gave Solomon
greater royal splendor than anyking in Israel before him.
So David, son of Jesse, reignedover all Israel, and he reigned
over Israel for forty years, seven of them in Hebron and
thirty-three in Jerusalem.
He died at a ripe old age, having enjoyed long life, wealth
and honor.
Then his son, solomon, ruled inhis place.

(07:54):
All the events of King David'sreign, from beginning to end,
are written in the record ofSamuel the seer, the record of
Nathan the prophet and therecord of Gad Eshep the seer.
The accounts include the mightydeeds of his reign and
everything that happened to himand to Israel and to all the
surrounding kingdoms.
So, as we finish this up today,as a summary of the whole thing

(08:15):
, but also this chapter, remember the overall summary is
when God is with you, there'salways hope.
And, as we see at the end ofthis one, this first book,
there's this moment where Davidsaid hey, I've given everything
I have to the Lord, who willfollow me in giving to the Lord.
And so they do.
And then David is so excited heprays and he says God, we

(08:37):
really get the better end of thedeal on this, because
everything we have he said, eventhis, this temple we're going
to build it's already yours,it's from everything.
So you freely give to us andthen you give us an opportunity
and a blessing to be able togive back to you.
That's amazing, and so freelyas we have received, we now have
the opportunity to freely give, and I tell you that is the

(09:02):
honor that we have.
You know, we live in a culturethat I don't think anybody ever
said hey, you know what, let'sput some plans together and
let's create a selfish culture.
I don't think anybody did that, but you know, what I think
happened is slowly, as ourculture became more of a service
industry culture and those kindof things started to happen
where people were now competingfor your business and people

(09:24):
were trying to cause you to wantto buy something that slowly
but surely we started to forgetthat the greatest thing we can
do is not to be served but toserve others, and I think you're
never closer to the heart ofGod than when you're serving
somebody else, and so one of thegreat things that God gives us
when we're part of a spiritualfamily is the opportunity to

(09:45):
give to one another, to blessone another, we also have the
opportunity to give to the Lord.
That's what tithing is.
Malachi 3 says test me in this, god says, and see if I won't
open up the windows of heavenand pour out a blessing to you
that you cannot contain.
Tithing is when God gives us100% of everything he has, but

(10:06):
he says I want you to honor meand I want you to give me 10%.
So what?
Tithe means?
10, 10% in return, and I talkedto people who have just said
rightly.
They said man, I feel like I'mgetting better into the deal on
this.
God says I get to keep 90 and Iget to give him 10, when the
whole hundred belongs to him.
Praise the Lord, because for Godit's got nothing to do with the

(10:28):
money.
Remember, he owns it all, it'salready his.
It has to do with thankfulness,it has to do with him teaching
us the reward of being able togive, of trusting in him.
Just like a good parent willteach their kids lessons that
they don't really the parentsthemselves, they get nothing out
of this other than thesatisfaction of seeing their

(10:49):
kids thrive.
And so God says hey, I'm goingto give it all to you.
Give me a little back so youcan experience the same joy that
I got to experience in gettingto give.
So what does that mean for ustoday?
What does it look like in yourlife to give to others?
Do you have any area of yourlife where you're able to
consistently give, where youreceive nothing in return?

(11:10):
Now, if you have small kids, you're all about that life right
now.
Especially little kids, theygive you nothing in return but
the occasional smile.
Right, that's okay.
That's their journey in liferight now.
But what about other areas?
Are there areas in your lifewhere you are able to give to
someone without receivinganything in return?
Because it's wonderful when yougive and receive, but you get a

(11:32):
reward from that person, right, you get whatever that is.
Is there an area of your lifewhere you can give to someone
where you don't receive a reward?
There's many areas you can dothis.
You can do this in your localchurch and go and sign up for a
team and join a team and serveon a team and the people who are
walking through they're notgiving you anything in return.
Your reward comes from the Lord, local outreach.
You go serve in a homelessshelter or go to in prison,

(11:57):
ministry, different things whereyou're not receiving any reward
from them.
The reward is coming from theLord.
Is there an area where you canserve, where you don't receive
anything from anybody else?
If so, go, try it and watchwhat happens, because it truly
is more blessed to give than toreceive.
And I think, once again, that'sone of the reasons why God asks
us to give financially back tohim is so that we can remember

(12:22):
that our ultimate source ofsupply comes from him and we get
the joy of releasing something, because when we do, we get to
realize that, man, it is so muchmore blessed to give than
receive.
But it's not just money, butit's an area, area of life.
Try it and see what happens.
Let's pray together.
God, thank you so much for today.
Thank you, god, for the journeythrough first Chronicles.

(12:44):
Thank you that.
It is a wonderful reminderwhether you are with us.
You're for us in every way.
I pray, god that you'llcontinue to walk with us and I
pray, lord, that you'll putthings in our path where we will
have opportunities to give toyou, have opportunities to
experience you in our life andto know, god, that you truly are
for us.
I pray, lord, as we get readyto shift over to a New Testament

(13:04):
book, that First Chronicleswill go with us to say that,
even in the little things, evenin the hidden things, god you're
always with us, and when God iswith you there's always hope.
We celebrate that today InJesus' name.
We pray Amen, amen.
Well, one more time.
1 Chronicles 29 says this Iknow, my God, that you examine
our hearts and you rejoice whenyou find integrity there.

(13:27):
God sees you, god knows you,god has a plan for your life.
I love you.
I'll see you tomorrow forchapter one of First
Thessalonians.
I'll see you then.
