Today we share this super popular WIBS 21 session titled How to Build A Recipe. Featuring Cat Wiest and moderated by Tyler & Laurie of the Brewd ‘up podcast. We unfortunately had some technical difficulties with our moderators intro so it may sound a bit harsh as we jump right in here with Cat but we do get to hear from Tyler and Laurie towards the end of the talk so all is not lost.
Cat tells us a bit about herself and how she came to brewing and then dives right in to dropping the knowledge. First thing in designing your recipe is to ask yourself what your goal is. Do you have a flavor profile in mind? Are you trying out a new technique? Refining a known recipe? What inspires you? Cat then walks us through her recipe for her aspirational red ale. Things get a bit technical as she gives us equations to figure yield and grist percentages, IBUs and isomerization, mash profile and temp considerations and she answers lots of questions along the way.
