Furry Allies: A Social Worker's Experience with Cat-owning Clients with Melanie Savage

Danielle and Elizabeth were joined by Melanie Savage, who hails from Ontario, and works with people in need of social services. She's found herself getting assigned to clients who have cats, which is wonderful because Melanie loves feline friends. She finds a connection to her clients through the cats, because who doesn't love talking about cats?! The discussion centered around people in rough situations finding comfort from their cats, and even forgoing treating their own medical needs so they could take care of their cats. Also how cats are easier and usually less expensive than dogs, but yet are still perceptive to their owner's need for closeness. Melanie talked about services for people who may not be able to care for their cats, such as My Grandfather's Cat, a service in Canada that re-homes pets whose owners have passed. She also brought up Community Veterinary Outreach, which supports those individuals who are experiencing homelessness or the risk of losing their housing who have cats, who have dogs, and they provide pro bono veterinary care and also provide some primary health care at their vet clinics. Great news for Ottawans, Melanie is working on opening her own practice soon to support folks with pet loss.  The conversation went on, if you ever have a question for Danielle or Elizabeth they'll be happy to answer it.
