Speaker 1 (00:00):
We are making our own story as we go, as we go, as we
go, hopin'.
We are hopin' that we'll go.
So we're never after, neverafter.

(00:20):
So we're gonna be talking aboutwhat it means to have custom

(00:55):
jewelry done and a little bitabout some of the things you
should talk about when you'repurchasing custom jewelry for
your wedding.
Now, one thing that I alwaysrecommend to people is if you
can support local business, you're going to get much, much
more personalized customerservice versus going to national

(01:15):
chains.
So definitely support localbusinesses because they're
passionate about what they doand they are so knowledgeable in
what they specialize in.
Wouldn't you agree, Paolo?

Speaker 2 (01:26):
Yes, ma'am, I'm really happy to have you here.
Thank you for having us andcoming to our beautiful studio,
oh and I'm just so excitedbecause I get to play dress-up
today.
And modeling our jewelry for ustoday.
That's very nice.

Speaker 1 (01:37):
I have a surrogate wedding ring because Silly Knee
left mine in Rochester byaccident.
So thank you for the stand-in.

Speaker 2 (01:45):
And this is gorgeous.

Speaker 1 (01:47):
This is a princess cut with.

Speaker 2 (01:49):
It's a princess cut diamond set in platinum,
actually with a cathedralsetting with a matching channel
set.
Princess cut diamond ring.

Speaker 1 (01:58):
That is just gorgeous .
Well, and tell us a little bitabout what is so special about
having custom jewelry done foryour wedding.

Speaker 2 (02:07):
So when you're planning for your wedding
jewelry and engagement ring, ifyou're doing wedding bands, it's
really important to go to alocal independent jeweler,
because a local independentjeweler is going to give you
great service, they're going togive you great pricing, they're
going to give you a niceselection.
The beauty of working with usis we are a custom jeweler and

(02:30):
being a custom jeweler, ourslogan is whatever your heart
desires.
So when you come and sit downwith us, you're in our beautiful
, relaxed studio.
We're a private jeweler byappointment.
Sit down, have a nice glass ofwine or a cocktail with some
chocolates and just unwind alittle bit.
We get to know the client, findout what your interests are,

(02:52):
what style you're looking for,and then we take you step by
step through that process.
Some people choose to go withdiamond jewelry, which we'll
talk about in a few moments.
Some people choose gemstonejewelry.
Some people like a moreEuropean style.
They choose just wedding bandsand maybe stacking rings as well
.
So everybody is always welcomehere at the studio.

(03:13):
We have such a wide variety ofclientele and we're just very
happy to be with you today andtell me, and we'll keep on going
and explaining what's going onhere.

Speaker 1 (03:24):
Well, I was going gaga when I was looking at some
of the different showcase piecesthat you have here.
I mean you have everything fromwhite gold to platinum, to
pearls and gemstones.
I mean everything is justexquisite.
I mean, that was the first wordthat came to mind was exquisite
.

Speaker 2 (03:40):
Thank you.
Thank you, yeah, I mean, we'reone of the few jewelers in the
city Well, probably even in thenation we literally design and
create our own line.
So we're designers, metalsmithsand gemologists, and the
important thing about that is wecover the entire spectrum.
So we've been in business 30years, wow.

(04:00):
However, we have 200 years ofcombined experience.
So our style is classic, modern, trained by Italian
traditionalists, and our masterjeweler, ezio Aravario, trained
me myself, paolo, as a designer, and then our current master
jeweler on premise today ismaster jeweler Richard.
So those are really importanthaving the gemologist as well.

(04:22):
We have two gemologists onstaff.
One is a cat designer, one isour broker, and then the other
beautiful thing that we do is weuse an independent graduate
gemologist, certified appraiser,to do all of our appraisals.
That's extremely important.
It's very important yeah it'svery important.
And if you are choosing adiamond, the nice thing about
that is at Palo we use GIAdiamonds that come with their

(04:49):
paperwork, so it's independentlygraded, lab graded, natural
diamonds that we use.
And the thing that most peopletalk about are the four C's,
which are clarity, cut, carrotweight and color.
So when we talk about color,it's how white a stone is.

(05:09):
When we talk about clarity,it's how pure it is, and if you
talk about cut, it's how lightis reflected.
But cut also determines theshape of the stone.
And then carrot weight is onecarrot is 100 percentage points,
so a half carrot would be.50carrot total weight.

Speaker 1 (05:29):
Wow, Well, in the color.
I know for my husband, speakingfrom personal experience, he is
so sensitive to the coloryellow that he can pick out when
a diamond is like an eye colorversus a D or an E color.

Speaker 2 (05:43):
And we show you all that when we come in.
We show you the GIA or AGSpaperwork with your diamond.
We have a microscope ifsomebody wants to look through
it.
As far as clarity goes, we havea color guide that we can show
the color.
But I'll tell you one thingwhen you're dealing with a
quality jeweler like ourselvesand some of the great jewelers
in the city of Cincinnati, you're going to be dealing with

(06:07):
a stone that has a certification.
It's already pre-graded by twoindependent graduate gemologists
.
So color is important, as iswhen you have a stone in front
of you that's already gradedcolor.
It's putting your mind at ease.
Oh, absolutely, even this stonehere.
This is an exact one carat rounddiamond.

(06:28):
It's very good, very good, verygood, which means it has very
good cut symmetry and polish.
The most important thing alsois it's an E color.
So DEF is colorless, ghij isnear colors and, like you said,
once you get into the eye orbelow, you'll start to see a
little bit of yellow.

(06:48):
If you stay in DEF, it'scolorless and if you stay in
GHIJ it's near colorless, so youwon't see much color.
And then another beautifulthing about this diamond it's a
VS2.
So that means that you haveinternally flawless, flawless,
excuse me, flawless, internallyflawless.
Then you go to VBS1, vbs2,which is very, very small

(07:10):
imperfections, and then you alsogo to VS1, vs2, which is very
small.
So if you do choose to go witha natural diamond, the four C's
are extremely important.
Here at Palo we use GIA gradedstones and we also use AGS

(07:31):
occasionally, which is theAmerican Gem Society.
Gia stands for the GemologicalInstitute of America and that's
where all of our gemologiststhat we work for they're all
trained with GIA.
And when you're looking atdiamonds, the most important
part is color, clarity, cut andcarrot weight.
So color determines the colorof a stone.

(07:54):
So DEF is colorless, g-h-i-j isnear colorless.
We generally stay in the DEFcolor.
However, we'll go to a G orH-color as long as it has really
good clarity and cut Clarity isoverplayed a little bit.
If the stone is clear enough, you're not going to see the
imperfections.

Speaker 1 (08:12):
Right.

Speaker 2 (08:13):
Okay and they're graded in advance.
So you're going to see adocument that shows you the
color, the clarity, and then thecut.
And cut is one of the mostimportant, because cut
determines the reflection oflight, which is called
brilliance, and then, it alsodetermines the shape of the
stone.
And then carrot weight is verybasic.
Carrot weight is 100 percentagepoints is one carrot.

(08:36):
So a half carrot would be 0.50,three-quarter carrot would be
0.75.
Okay, so that's reallyimportant to have documentation
with your diamond.
And then the next thing that Iwant to show you that cut
determines is the shape ofdiamonds.
Ah yeah, there's so manydifferent shapes.
My goodness there are.
There's even more than thiswhen you get the fancy cut.

Speaker 1 (08:54):
These are probably the most popular ones.

Speaker 2 (08:55):
The most popular.
Yes, so this is a GIA set ofstones, so this is a round
diamond which is the mostpopular.
And then the rest of thesediamonds on here, other than the
emerald cut, are modificationsof the round brilliant.
So the round brilliant is themost popular.
So a princess cut istechnically called a modified
round brilliant.

Speaker 1 (09:16):
Right because it's a square.

Speaker 2 (09:17):
It's a square, but it's modified, but it's cut on
the same structure.
So they have, on average, 57facets.
And then when you get down tothe emerald cut, which is
extremely popular as well, it'sa step cut.
They tend to have 16 facets.
So this is just a littlesampling.
You have round pear, heart, princess cushion and so on.

(09:38):
Like we just sold a beautifultrillion cut but they went with
a gemstone, which is also veryinteresting because gemstone
jewelry has become very popular.
So if you want a diamond, that's nice and we work with
natural diamonds.
And then if you want a gemstone, we have beautiful collection
of sapphires, which are the bestbecause sapphires and ruby are

(10:00):
from the same family.
It's called corundum, so thesapphire starts out white and as
it crystallizes it picks upother minerals.
That's how we see color, andwhen it gets to the red color it
becomes ruby.
And they're 9 out of 10 on thehardness scale.
And I'll close with this ontalking about gemstone and
diamonds.
Hardness means scratchability.

(10:21):
Any stone will chip or crack, but a diamond and ruby and
sapphire are the hardest stonesknown to man, diamond being 10,
ruby and sapphire being 9 on thehardness scale.
So that's really important aswell.
And then what I'd like to do isshow you some jewelry.

Speaker 1 (10:38):
Wonderful.
That would be OK with you, absolutely.
So what is this beautiful piecethat your assistant gave to me?

Speaker 2 (10:43):
Yeah, so what you're wearing today.
I'm just to relax your handhere.
This is our split bar ring.
So it's a half-carat diamondset in white gold.
It's weighted on the bottom, which is commonly referred to as
Italian or European shank, because it's weighted on the
bottom so it doesn't spin asmuch.

(11:03):
And then you have on abeautiful split bar necklace
this is so beautiful which isanother diamond set and on
adjustable chain so you canadjust it for your outfit.
And then you have here this isa beautiful estate diamond
bracelet which is extremelybeautiful.
And then I also brought out acouple fun things to show you.
This is a beautiful ringdesigned by our team.

(11:25):
This is a platinum setting withan oval diamond, a very, very
nice, high-grade oval diamond.
And that's an amazing piece.
It's nice and white and it'scurved inside and out for
comfort.

Speaker 1 (11:37):
I was going to say that's probably going to feel
very comfortable, especiallygoing on your knuckle.
I know that's one of the fearsthat couples have when the
wedding ceremony is going onthey're worried that the ring is
going to get stuck on theirknuckle.

Speaker 2 (11:50):
Also for the engagement.
That's also really important.
So we generally if we can sizethe lady's ring and then the
surprise begins, that's great.
But if you want a surprise fromthe very beginning, we
generally will find out a ringthat fits her, but we usually go
a little bit larger.
We can always size the ring.
It's included in the price ofthe ring and the beauty of that

(12:10):
is it'll slide over the knuckleagain.
And now what I'm going to showyou, this is an incredible piece
.
This is a very, very beautifulring.
It's a diamond ring set made byhand, literally pounded out of
metal made by hand, and weflush-mounted very nice VSF
round diamonds all the wayaround.

(12:31):
So it's basically an eternityband, but it can be used as a
wedding band and a anniversaryband.
What have you?
That is beautiful.
And then I'm going to show youa couple nice men's rings.
This is a beautiful platinummen's band, again curved inside
and out.
And then this has pave setdiamonds.
So some men like diamonds, Ifthey so choose.
We do pave set diamond, andpave is we set the diamond, pick

(12:54):
the metal around it, so itlooks like one diamond, but it's
actually multiple diamonds.
It almost has a vintage feel toit.
It does, it does, you're right.
And then this has a mattefinish which probably gives it
that more vintage feel.
And I'm going to show you onemore fun piece here.
This is a lovely ring.
It's in yellow gold, which isbecoming very popular with both
men and women.

(13:14):
And this is yellow gold, butit's a squared shank, so it's
squared on each end, kind ofsoftened on the edges, and then
also curved inside, which iscommonly called, in layman's
terms, copper fit, but injeweler's terms it's called
inside round.
Okay, and I want to show youthis one last thing that we have
which is beautiful.

(13:35):
We have a nice collection ofestate jewelry and that's great.
If you need something used, wehave a wonderful collection of
estate jewelry.
Estate meaning prion, vintagemeaning 50 years or older,
antique meaning 100 years orolder.

Speaker 1 (13:48):
Okay, so I wanted to show you this.

Speaker 2 (13:50):
This is from my father.
Wow, yeah, and it's um veryneat.
It's um hematite set in yellowgold okay, and then I just want
to show you one more option.
Yeah, for men or ladies, thisis very, very nice.
This is rose gold, and this isagain flat shank curved inside.
And then this has a florentinefinish, which is a very old

(14:10):
school italian design done witha hand engraver well, it's
interesting.

Speaker 1 (14:14):
You can totally see the difference between the rose
gold and the yellow gold.
Yeah, there's definitely adifference in in just the way
the light catches it just in thetones as well, yeah absolutely
yeah, oh wonderful.

Speaker 2 (14:26):
So there it is.
So again, what I'd like to goback.
What you were talking aboutfirst, kathy, was, if you're
looking to, you know, purchasean engagement ring, a wedding
band, even an anniversary band.
Always refer to your localindependent jeweler.
You're going to get the bestservice.
I mean, the quality is usuallyimpeccable.
Uh, we were trained to onlypresent the best when it comes

(14:50):
out.
And another thing that we dothat's a lot of fun.
If you purchase an engagementring or wedding set with us,
when you pick up the weddingbands, you receive a palo date
night which includes wine andchocolates at the studio oh 100
gift certificate for a weddinggift, 50 gift certificates for
your entire wedding party.

(15:10):
And then, to celebrate, when youpick up your final wedding band
, we send you down the dinner atprime Cincinnati, one of our
branding partners amazingrestaurant, wow, and you receive
a 100 gift certificate.
An excellent service there aswell that's huge.

Speaker 1 (15:25):
I wonder if.
I wonder if I can get marriedagain.
I wonder if jim, I wonder ifjimmy will marry me again.
We'll just treat you to a datewell, and it's funny you bring
up date night, because one ofthe things that I always tell my
couples is planning a weddingis stressful.
It's the first big decisionmaking process that you will
have as a couple right, I meanyou're you're setting a budget,

(15:48):
you're making decisions.
You're dealing with familypolitics.
You're dealing with choiceslike what kind of food are you
going to have?

Speaker 2 (15:55):
what kind of flowers are you going to have?

Speaker 1 (15:57):
and that's stressful, that's very stressful, and so
I'll tell my couples when you'restarting to feel stressed out.
You go on a date night and youare not allowed to say the word
invitation, guest list, food, reception, you're not allowed to
say any of those weddingbuzzwords and it's just like
getting a massage it's just it's.

Speaker 2 (16:17):
It's amazing.

Speaker 1 (16:18):
It makes you realize why you're doing it in the first
place, yeah, and so I meanthat's.
That is a beautiful gift justin itself.
It's the gift of a gift ofpeace, of mind just being
together and relaxing.

Speaker 2 (16:29):
And that's one thing about our studio.
It's not set up as atraditional jewelry store, which
you'll see a little later.
We are a jewelry design studio.
It's a very relaxing atmosphere.
We only see one client at atime.
And two things I like to closewith is one the date night is a
great way towards the end ofyour wedding planning that you

(16:50):
can enjoy on our, you know, asour gift and then I would also
recommend always hire an eventplanner, a wedding event planner
.
Kathy is one of the best in thecity.
She has a network of incredibleflorist.
We were very lucky to work withone of your clients and be a
beautiful jewelry for them thisis an amazing story.

(17:12):
Wait till you hear about thisand so we created some jewelry
using the couples the couplesjewelry we used.
What did we use?

Speaker 1 (17:21):
and actually I have some footage that will we'll put
into this so everybody can see.
So we had the bride had herfather's wedding band and then
we had that melted down and thenit was made into three
different pieces, and one wasmade into a necklace, one was
made into the gemstone was takenout of one of them and she used

(17:43):
that in her bouquet, and thenthe other one she used as her
now husband's wedding band.

Speaker 2 (17:49):
Right, that's right, and so that was beautiful and
everything was custom.

Speaker 1 (17:53):
And I'll never forget the look on her face when she
saw the ring.
It was just this this soft, like what's the word.
It was this soft glow glow.
It was like a soft happy.
You could just see that, thetenderness and the happiness she
just it was almost like shefelt like her father was there

(18:14):
with that.
Yeah, it was beautiful.

Speaker 2 (18:16):
Yeah, it was beautiful and that was nice
because that wedding wasdocumented by the photographer.
But everybody was brought inthrough Kathy's group and it was
just an amazing experience.
