הפרק עוסק בתחושת אי הודאות שמתבטאת בצורך האנושי לעשות את מסע החיים מתוך תחושת ביטחון ויציבות ברורים וודאיים על מנת שלא נאלץ להיפגש עם הפחדים העמוקים או עם האפשרויות שלא מוצאות תואם עם תפיסת המציאות והעולם האוטופי שהאדם בונה לעצמו כדימוי לרצונו האמיתי להיות מאושר ובכלל זה הפרשנות שלו על הנושא. חיים נוחים, בטוחים ושקטים הם בהחלט מטרה ראויה אבל כאשר הם הופכים להתניה שמבטלת אפשרויות אחרות האדם נסחף אל תהליכים פנימיים של הונאה עצמית. הוא עושה זאת על מנת לבנות מעקף לכל אותן פחדים ואפשרויות שהוא לא היה רוצה לממש והם מאיימים על יציבותו (לכאורה) .האמת אומרת שהעולם בבסיסו מונע ע״י שינוי ומחזוריות של גאות ושפל ואי וודאות שהיא זו ששומרת בסופו של דבר על זכות הבחירה החופשית כי היא מציבה את האדם על צמתים של התלבטות והחלטה שמחייבת אותו להביט פנימה בעצמו, לחקור את תודעתו ואת רצונו האמיתי וזו כוונת החיים.
