C’era una volta una pianta, una pianta che oggi non esiste più, ma che per secoli fu una delle piante più preziose del mondo, una pianta per cui si pagava a peso d’oro, sul cui commercio intere città e regioni prosperavano, e per cui si facevano guerre e si aprivano intere rotte commerciali. Una pianta il cui nome e il cui simbolo vennero impressi in stemmi, monete, geroglifici, e che oggi è completamente dimenticata, tanto che non sappiamo nemmeno più esattamente che pianta fosse, e perché fosse considerata così preziosa. Il suo nome era Silphion, e cresceva solo in luogo al mondo, una piccola striscia di terra di 200 per 60 chilometri in Cirenaica, proprio sulla punta di quella gobba, oggi in Libia, che la costa africana fa protendendosi nel cuore Mediterraneo. Il Silfio non poteva essere coltivato, ma solo raccolto dalle crescite spontanee: ce lo racconta Teofrasto, discepolo di Aristotele, mentre Plinio il Vecchio scrive che solo una versione molto meno pregiata, l’Assafetida, poteva essere coltivata. Questo ne faceva un bene ancora più raro e prezioso, che fece l’enorme fortuna della città di Cirene, e che tutte le grandi civiltà del Mediterraneo cercarono di accaparrarsi in ogni modo finché, intorno all’anno 60 dopo Cristo, con l’arrivo dei Romani, scomparve letteralmente dalla faccia della Terra.
