(01:50):
And I add a biopsychologicalperspective to that.
Chances are quite high that youare a PhD student, postdoc, or even
professor in the age range 25 to 35.
And that's usually the time to start afamily or maybe you are already a parent.
And as you leap into business, orindustries after completing your PhD

Now, in this episode, I want you toreflect on yourself and also on your

(04:31):
partner or your spouse, the futureparent of your child or children.
And as a disclaimer, maybe you don't wannahave children, that's absolutely fine.
And you can stop listening now right away.
But if being a parent is part of yourvision of life, I kindly suggest to use
this episode as a flag test with yourpartner before you have a child together.

(04:57):
Why?
Because a child depends on youand your partner as parents.
If you are a solo parent, that's even more on you.
Bear in mind that a childhasn't asked to be born.
It's the parent's responsibilityto care for the kid.
And here are some factors to consider.

(05:18):
Number one, speaking ofresponsibility, it's shared
responsibility as needed over time.
As you transition into businessand industries, which is a huge
challenge, recognize the importanceof shared responsibilities,
both at work and at home.
Collaborate with your partner to balancegreedy career demands, which require

(05:42):
a lot of traveling, a lot of being onpremise, at the company, not at home.
On weekends, on the evenings, etc.
And balance that with familyobligations, like who picks up the
kid, their hobbies, and whatever.
And also tutoring theirschoolwork if they need help.

(06:06):
Ensuring that neither oneof you is disproportionately
burdened for a couple of years.
Also, balance your own and your partner'spersonal time so that you remain a couple.
A loving couple beyondworking and parenting.
Number two, flexibility in career choices.
Approach your careertransition with flexibility.

(06:28):
While you may have invested significanttime and effort in your academic path,
be open to exploring diverse careeropportunities that align with your
skills and interests in business.
Flexibility in adjusting yourcareer trajectory is crucial.
There are remote, hybrid, full versuspart time, shared positions, etc

(06:52):
But be aware that if you are theone who is flexible you always are
expected to be the flexible one.
So, if one of the partners has a greedyjob, then you should also bear that in
mind to commit to change after a coupleof years to having a greedy job as well,

(07:13):
if you want to pursue a career as well.
And did you know that we offerdeep dive e course workshops and
memberships at graduate schools, maybe also at yours in the future.
Ask your graduate schoolcoordinator, whether they want
to book my services so that I candeliver them to you 24 seven 365.

(07:37):
on your mobile device.
And even better, if you get us paid byyour grad school, we will pay you 50
percent recurring sales commissions.
So you will earn money with us aswe help you and your PhD besties
to transition into business.
We can build ourPostdocTransformation together.

(08:02):
Number three, communication and planning.
Open and transparent communication is key.
Discuss your career aspirations andfamily planning with your partner.

https (08:14):
otter.
ai
You know, for greedy jobs, moremoney, more traveling, you know,
they seldomly go away one day.

(08:34):
That's always a little bit more, so ifone partner gets more and more and more,
it's hard to turn around to achieve coupleequity if it never had been committed to.
Number four, plan for the long term.
It's a marathon, really.
Consider why, when, andhow to start a family.

(08:55):
How career transitions alignwith family goals and make
strategic decisions accordingly.
There is never, really there is neverthe perfect time to become pregnant.
Have you checked your fertility?
Why?
Because becoming pregnant is alsosometimes beyond your control.

(09:17):
Fertility treatments are stressful.
Time consuming and cost a lot of money.
And I always recommend social egg freezingto my bachelor and master women students
in their 20s when their eggs are youngenough to be conserved for many years.
If you are a woman at that age range, look up this term, social egg freezing.

(09:41):
I am not a gynecologist, but I am aprofessor who also teaches biopsychology,
and I can tell you, it really, would beworth looking up if you are young enough.
So, when you do social freezing, you canafford to postpone becoming pregnant.
Otherwise you postpone until you aresettled in your new career in business

(10:05):
or until you find the perfect spouseblah blah blah only to find out
that your eggs aren't good anymore.
From episode one and counting,I have proudly hosted all
our PostdocTransformationShow episodes on Podbean.
As a former IT strategy consultant,I have high requirements on my

(10:27):
tech stack and Podbean is myperfect fit for a podcast host.
If you want to create your own individualpodcast or one for, you know, internal
upskilling and communications withina company, DM or email me PodBean so I
can share my experience and consult you.
You can also use my affiliatelinks for perks, launching

(10:47):
your own podcast with PodBean.
I built my postdoc transformationas a digital business, and I chose
Active Campaign to be the centerpieceof all my services like email cores,
podcasts, newsletters, show notes, websites, sales page, merch shop,
forms, whatever it is, as needed.
As a former IT strategy consultant,I have high requirements on my

(11:08):
tech stack, and Active Campaignis a must have recommendation.

(11:32):
Now, on to a less turmoiling factor, number five, support networks.
Build a strong support network.
Rely on mentors, professional networks, and when necessary, extended family
support to manage your career andfamily responsibilities effectively.
For those of you who are internationalPhD students, postdocs, I know that

(11:56):
you've been probably leaving your homecountry to pursue a better future.
If you want to raise a family in parallelto your greedy job in academia, then you
also have to consider that maybe yourparents aren't there for you locally.
So these are things that youhave to consider if you are an
international early career scientist.

(12:22):
Have you found this episodeso far helpful for yourself?
Well, maybe you can subscribe onYouTube, Spotify, Apple Podcasts,
Podbean, or wherever you get our show.

Also, Our subscription and listeningnumbers are key for finding the
right sponsors for our show sothat we can help you for free.
And now back to the show.
Also from my own experience, I canonly recommend to you to surround

(13:06):
yourself with same minded people only.
Do not expect empathy from humansliving in a traditional couple model.
You don't have time to cope withtheir, at best, well intended,
but not helpful advice fromtheir traditional perspectives.
And by the way, often businessnetworking happens on the evening,

(13:30):
so take turns to become andremain visible at the workplace.
If you want a solo episode onhappiness with kids in career,
DM me to get this in season four.
And again, our inspiring guests inseason three and upcoming season four
are also parents and successful in theircareers in business or academia, and
some are even thriving entrepreneurs.

(13:52):
So, listen to all of them andlet them inspire a piece of
your PostdocTransformation.

with a doctor title to apply?
