Let's start with the first oftwo chapters in this episode.
Here's what I shared in the BeyondScience magazine on Instagram in the
paperback edition and also online.

(03:03):
And I linked to that in the show notes.
What advice would you liketo give to young scientists?
A great performance inyour master's degree.
Lack of job alternatives after themaster, reluctance to enter the
non academic job market, all threeare wrong reasons to pursue a PhD.

(03:23):
If you want to become a scientistfor the right reasons, go for it.
Do this with due diligence.
The chances to become aprofessor are very small.
Academia is not fair forunderprivileged, underrepresented,
and underserved scientists.
Some disciplines have bettercareer prospects than others.
The nature of delayed andrare gratifications in overall

(03:47):
science can be depressing.
So, please reflect whether you have enoughresilience, resources, and confidence
to endure the tough times in your PhD.
Follow role models in socialmedia to make an informed decision
prior to start a PhD or postdoc.

business parallel to your research.

Okay, let's go to the second oftwo chapters in this episode.
If you want to do a PhD, by allmeans, you need to decide on your grad
school, especially if you are a gifted, underrepresented, underprivileged, and
underserved master or bachelor graduate.
Yes, you heard me correctly.
You can also pursue a PhDright away after your bachelor.

(06:01):
Here are some points to consider.
Number one.
Requirements.
Some programs accept a certainbachelor degree if it fulfills
certain criteria and maybe you justneed to add extra courses or exams.
Number two, choose yourresearch discipline according
to the future of work.

(06:21):
How can a specific researchtopic help many people to embrace
the future challenges accordingto the World Economic Forum?
That's research needed, and thereforemost probably, it's better funded.
If you wish to dig deeper into thefuture of work, I have two episodes
in season one and two, and I willlink to them in the show notes.

(06:44):
Have you found this episodeso far helpful for yourself?
Well, maybe you can subscribe onYouTube, Spotify, Apple Podcasts,
Podbean, or wherever you get our show.
And also, share this episode withyour PhD bestie because that would
encourage us to help the underprivileged, underrepresented, and underserved early
career scientists leaping into business.

(07:05):
This would also ensure that youdon't miss a future episode.
Also, Our subscription and listeningnumbers are key for finding the
right sponsors for our show sothat we can help you for free.
And now back to the show.
Now, let's go back tothe factors number three.
Research scholarships and financial aid.

(07:26):
Look for universities that offerscholarships, grants, or financial
aid specifically for underprivilegedstudents to ease the financial burden.
Number four, diversityand inclusion programs.
Seek schools with robust diversityand inclusion programs that actively
support underrepresented students sothat there is a more inclusive community.

(07:51):
Those which have it, obviouslyneeded it in the first place, but
at least they are aware and aresomewhat committed to improve.
Number five, faculty diversity.
Consider the diversity of faculty andstaff as this can impact your academic
experience and access to mentorship.
I can tell you that firsthand, right?

(08:14):
So, for a very long time, I've been aprofessor exactly since 10 years now, and
I don't see a lot of minority professors.
I'm always one of the very fewwomen, people of color, mothers, etc.
If you are underrepresented, you deserve role models that are
relatable and inspiring for you.

(08:35):
Not just the ones you cannot emulate.
And related to mentoring, please also listen to Mentoring
Your Way with Professor Dr.
Carlotta A. Berry.
And once you have determined yourreadiness to leap and want to transition
into business or industries, then youcan enroll in your free email course with
10 actionable, bingeable email lessonsuntil you start your job in business.

(08:59):
You'll get 10 emails like this.
Number one, how to leap out of science.
Number two, how to build yoursustainable LinkedIn profile.
Number three, how to readsocial media and network.
Number four, how to researchyour favorite jobs and employers.
Number five, how to do informationinterviews to get insights.
Number six, how to create yourcustomized applications with ChatGPT.

(09:23):
Number seven, how to prepare yourthesis from a business point of view.
Number eight, how to applyto your favorite employers.
Number nine, how to choosethe right job offer.
Number 10, how toprepare for your new job.
Now back to the factors.
Number six, location.
Think of the location of theschool and whether it aligns with

(09:45):
your personal preferences andgoals, such as cost of living, job
opportunities, and community support.
Listen to our very first episode andwhat I said about geographies where,
you know, living is safe for you.
Number seven, student support services.
I would investigate the availabilityof support services like counseling,

(10:08):
tutoring, career development, which canhelp underprivileged students to succeed.
In that case, I have always recommendedmy alumni grad school, the Ruhr
University of Bochum ResearchSchool, as linked in the show notes.
Also, check out our episodes onstrategies for doing a PhD and strategies

(10:29):
for underrepresented PhD students.
Number eight, networking opportunities.
Look for schools with strong alumniand alumni networks and connections
to organizations or industriesthat align with your career goal.
Or maybe you have ineptus or somethinglike that at your school, at your
university, which is a valuabledifferential networking experience if

(10:54):
your PhD does not focus on business.
And by the way, did you knowthat there are programs offering
a PhD in entrepreneurship oremerging technologies, et cetera.
Listen to the episode with Dr.
Tina Ruseva as an example.
And did you know that we offerdeep dive e course workshops and
memberships at graduate schools, maybe also at yours in the future.

(11:17):
Ask your graduate schoolcoordinator, whether they want
to book my services so that I candeliver them to you 24 seven 365.
on your mobile device.
And even better, if you get us paid byyour grad school, we will pay you 50
percent recurring sales commissions.
So you will earn money with us aswe help you and your PhD besties

(11:41):
to transition into business.
We can build our PostdocTransformation together.
Research opportunities.
So if you are pursuing a researchoriented program, explore the research
opportunities and labs available toyou prior to signing the contract.

(12:03):
Big name researchers have pros and cons, and sometimes that means that postdocs are
the better option as supervisors for you.
That doesn't mean that postdocsaren't the better option at all.
But instead, you should always thinkof who can also, you know, help you on
the way towards becoming a professor.

(12:24):
Or, leaving academia altogether.
Number 10.
Community engagement.
Consider schools that are activelyengaged with and support the surrounding
underserved communities, which indicatesa commitment to social responsibility.
Have you ever wondered how to makeyour grad school stand out in the

(12:46):
crowded landscape of academia?
Do you aim to attract the bestmaster's students from all over the
world to learn from and work with yourprofessors so that your research remains
globally recognized and well funded?
Do you wish to repel bad applicationswhich aren't tailored towards your
grad school's research profile?
Now, let's talk about a powerfulbranding tool, podcasts.

(13:09):
They're a game changer forhigher education institutions.
As a professor, active on TikTok,Instagram, LinkedIn, and a podcast
host and producer of this PostdocTransformation show, I'm here to
encourage all the graduate schoolrepresentatives to think beyond the
conventional marketing mechanism.
Instead of being one of many vendors.
At a time limited grad school fair, whynot create a podcast that showcases your

(13:35):
grad school as the ultimate destinationfor the world's best masters students
share inspiring and encouraging storiesof your top PhD students, high profile
alumni, your faculty and theincredible opportunities your grad
school offers a podcast can be a windowinto your school's vibrant community.

(13:56):
It's cutting edge researchand unique experiences.
And in times of AI generatedmarketing material, a podcast
with your academic leaders.
in real life is a very humanand innovative way to attract
prospective PhD students.
You can inform them every day, everywhere, not just during the typical

(14:16):
grad school application seasons.
This would prepare your bestcandidates for the application.
Even better, you can support andmake your current PhD students and
postdocs visible for their nextcareer steps in academia or business.
Remember, successful graduateselevate your grad school's reputation.

(14:37):
So, if you are a university chancellor, grad school dean, speaker, consider this.
By launching a podcast for your gradschool, you can elevate your grad
school's brand and tell aspiringscientists and employers what makes
your grad school the best choicewith scalable, evergreen content.
