In a world obsessed with quick fixes and temporary pleasures, what if true happiness is actually about something far more profound? This week on Sero Boost: The Happiness Science Insights Podcast, host Sabrina Oktavelia interviews psychology Assoc. Prof. Matthew Hammerton on what makes life worth living.

Having joined Singapore Management University in 2018, Assoc. Prof. Matthew Hammerton specializes in moral philosophy. His work covers a myriad of topics, including consequentialism, deontology, virtue ethics, meaning in life, and moral reasoning, that explores different categories of value that are important for living a good life and acting ethically. Currently, he is writing a monograph on work and its relation to meaning in life.

In this episode, Assoc. Prof. Matthew Hammerton highlights that happiness contains two meanings, referring to either a positive psychological state, or the idea that one has obtained the ‘ultimate’ status or objects in life, and that the two are often conflated. He adds that people may realize their meaning in life through various domains, be it work, community, or relationships.

Together, Sabrina and Assoc. Prof. Matthew Hammerton discuss the importance of taking a step back from the routine obligations of life to reflect on one’s goals and values. So, whether you’re feeling stuck, searching for more, or simply curious about the human experience and society’s notion of happiness, tune in to this episode for eye-opening and thought-provoking perspectives on happiness!

Ruthie's Table 4

Ruthie's Table 4

For more than 30 years The River Cafe in London, has been the home-from-home of artists, architects, designers, actors, collectors, writers, activists, and politicians. Michael Caine, Glenn Close, JJ Abrams, Steve McQueen, Victoria and David Beckham, and Lily Allen, are just some of the people who love to call The River Cafe home. On River Cafe Table 4, Rogers sits down with her customers—who have become friends—to talk about food memories. Table 4 explores how food impacts every aspect of our lives. “Foods is politics, food is cultural, food is how you express love, food is about your heritage, it defines who you and who you want to be,” says Rogers. Each week, Rogers invites her guest to reminisce about family suppers and first dates, what they cook, how they eat when performing, the restaurants they choose, and what food they seek when they need comfort. And to punctuate each episode of Table 4, guests such as Ralph Fiennes, Emily Blunt, and Alfonso Cuarón, read their favourite recipe from one of the best-selling River Cafe cookbooks. Table 4 itself, is situated near The River Cafe’s open kitchen, close to the bright pink wood-fired oven and next to the glossy yellow pass, where Ruthie oversees the restaurant. You are invited to take a seat at this intimate table and join the conversation.
