(00:02):
A lot of us can get confused about plumbing.
We hear about copper and PEX and galvanized and there's,
gosh,
there's,
there's all kinds of other plumbing clay has been used in the past and all kinds of different things.
I mean,
just all kinds of things.
Um,
today PEX is a pretty popular,
uh,
plumbing.
When you're building a new home.
A lot of us still have copper in our homes.

(00:23):
I'm not an expert on plumbing,
but I've asked an expert friend of mine,
Bobby Crowder or the family plumber to join me today to talk about the different types of plumbing you may have in your home and the pros and cons.
Hey,
Bobby Joe,
how you doing?
I'm doing fantastic.
Thanks.
So,
in my home she's around 20 years old copper.
What I've got,
it sounds about right copper.

(00:46):
But today,
if I were building a new home I hear picks might be the way to go.
Yeah.
So I'm,
I'm an old school 30 years in the trade master plumber.
So I'm a copper kind of guy.
A BS kind of guy,
you know,
I don't go far back as to the galvanized and cast iron stuff like that,

(01:09):
but actually I've dealt with it,
you know,
um,
I've,
uh,
the new,
like I said,
the new stuff is the PX,
you know,
X A P X B,
you know,
expansion cramp.
Um I've come to,
you can see,
I'm kind of like,
uh,
I kind of,
you know,
I think I've come to conclusion that I,

(01:30):
I'm not a bad,
it's not bad to have pets.
I've seen,
we've done some,
you know,
research,
we've done some tests and all sorts of things and p holds up,
it expands and contracts,
you know,
if it freezes,
it just kind of goes,
you know,
expands a little bit and comes back down.
Copper will not,
that's when you get your,
your leaks and your splits and stuff like that during the wintertime because as soon as that ice expands,

(01:55):
it splits that copper and then that's how you get your flood and your leak.
So,
um,
copper is still the way to go,
um,
on certain things.
Um,
like I said,
X A bs bow,
stuff like that is the most common now.
And,
uh we can get copper,
you know,

(02:15):
just as good as we can get pecks.
But like I said,
peck is more the more nowadays kind of install.
Um,
and they've converted quite well to where we can,
you know,
we can convert our pecks to brass adapter to copper,
you know,
or vice versa.
Um,

(02:37):
but uh galvanized over time gets really corroded in there and starts to shrink down.
And that's when you get your,
your low flow and your faucets and stuff like that because you're,
you're preventing the water flow because you don't have now that three quarter,
a half inch diameter,

(02:58):
it's now three eights.
So you start losing pressure and volume and everything through,
well,
not pressure,
you start using your,
losing your volume through your faucets and stuff.
A lot of people don't understand pressure and volume are two different things when it comes to the plumbing.
So people like to,
that's a different story.
So let's,
let's,
let's wait on that.
But,
uh you know,
that could be a long story.
But uh um A BS is now used,

(03:22):
I mean,
it's been used for quite a while since uh shoot sixties somewhere around there.
Uh Same with,
you know,
copper,
but uh you've got the cast iron that's like,
that's,
that gets pretty bad inside,
you know,
just,
just like galvanized,
it gets the corrosion,
it starts.

(03:42):
You don't have your smoothness in there anymore.
Like a,
like a slippery slide.
It's like it's now full of,
you know,
just build up and the pipe starts to corrode,
you know,
and starts to get thinner and starts to crack.
And that's when we can go in and we can inter line,
you know,
it's very common to line the inside of cast iron pipe now.

(04:04):
So with a smoother,
smoother textured,
uh substance,
um,
to actually get the flowing going,
you know,
a little bit smoother in your,
in your draining systems.
But,
uh,
Pecks and copper nowadays,
actually,
PEX is a little bit higher,
you know,
a little bit more used than copper compared to the cast iron and the galvanized galvanized water,

(04:27):
cast irons for drains and PEX and copper for water.
A BS for drains.
So that's,
that's our next jump up.
So who knows what might come out in the next 2030 years?
Who knows of all those products that you mentioned?
Copper is from my experience,
the most common and most tested over time.

(04:52):
So an iron or galvanized pipe,
we know that's not gonna hold up over time.
Copper has been pretty good to us over the decades.
It just has the newer products are newer and we really can't say over 50 years what they're going to be like,

(05:12):
like we can copper and,
you know,
it,
it's hard to say,
but I would say most of the people watching this do not have galvanized or iron.
Uh,
they're gonna probably have copper or if it's a new home,
they're probably gonna have pecks.
Yep.
Yep.
And that's the thing back,
uh,
about 88,
somewhere around there.
You know,
people got scared of this peck piping just because of the gray polybutylene that was failing all over in tons of houses out here.

(05:40):
So I can see that people were kind of hesitant to the plastic piping but,
you know,
the X A BS,
stuff like that.
It's,
it's not bad.
It,
it really is not.
And it took me quite some years to accept that because like I said,
I'm third year old school.
Yeah.
And I'm,
I'm strictly,
you know,
copper.

(06:00):
But,
yeah,
you know,
I,
I,
it,
it,
it grew on me.
So,
yeah,
it's like anything else.
Right.
It's one of those things we get used to it.
Bobby Crowder of the family plumber.
Thank you,
my friend.
I appreciate it.
Thanks.
