Hunter Brown joining us here on Astrosfan fast coverage right here on news radio
seven forty KR reach Hunter. Weappreciate the time, man, you stay
in warm trying to Yeah, thanksfor having me. Yeah, appreciate it
from nothing right right, Yeah,Cole doesn't affect people from the north,
not at all. So we've obviouslythe big news yesterday Josh Hater is now

(00:23):
a Houston Astro. Kyle Tucker's talkedabout it. We had the Astros genermatas
for Dana Brown on Parker Mshinski justhad Lance with Colors. Everybody's hit on
it. So where were you andwhat did you think about the news of
the Astros going in signing Josh Hater. But I was on the phone with
my dad and he said, hey, you guys just got Josh Hater And
I said, well, looks likewe might be playing six any games.
Yeah, yeah, but I needto have more wins this year than right,

(00:45):
Yeah, hopefully. I mean, obviously super excited. The guy's an
absolute beast. I haven't met himyet, but I'm looking forward to it.
And obviously, you know, reallyexcited to have him part of the
team. Yeah. I just can'tjust the way you presented that. Like,
family is a big deal, andevery every time a guy makes major
league debut, we have someone inthe sands, their their parents, their
family, their brothers, just whatever. Like your dad broke the news to

(01:06):
you about your team, about whatyou're doing, and how cool that is.
Uh, how much do you likewhat you've been able to already start
in your major league career with thisteam? And obviously your family is a
big part of all. Yeah, you know, it just been super blessed
in the in the the short timethat I've had in the big leagues,
you know, came up and anduh, you know, it was able

(01:26):
to be part of a World Seriesteam, and you know last year we
were close, fell short of ourgoal. But you know, a lot
of good things to build on arounda lot of really really talented players and
and really good people and you know, guys that you enjoy being around too,
So that goes a long way.So this is your first off season
after a full major league season. How does that impact what you think you
know about what you need to workon for the upcoming season. Yeah,

(01:49):
I mean a couple of things changed, you know, just based on on
timing too, and obviously, uh, you know, the amount of innings.
But yeah, as uh, youknow, as you know, experience
comes in. You learn a littlebit about you know, a bunch of
different stuff, so you can kindof go in with a little bit clear
head and see, uh, youknow exactly what you have to knock out
for spring training and moving into theseason. Talking about learning your first full

(02:15):
season in the role that you hada little bit inconsistent, probably frustrating at
times, obviously, what is theone biggest thing you learned from last year?
Yeah, I mean I think,uh, you know, I just
you got to rely on your teammatesand your coaching staff, right, you
know you can you can really geta lot of insight and help from those

(02:36):
guys. Yeah, you know,it's a it's a long year, and
you know, things change as theseason goes along, and you got to
you know, you have to makequick adjustments. So I would say number
one, you know, relying onyour teammates and your boys, and then
you know, making quicker adjustments. For sure. One of your teammates,
Justin Berlander, Yeah, have youtalked to him this offseason? Try to
pick his brain a little bit.Obviously going to the spring training, I
know, you're gonna be working withhim. But anything in this offseason,

(02:59):
any communications with at all or no, I mean just you know, just
staying putting my bullpens and stuff gettingrolling right now. You know, I'm
sure we'll have more in depth conversationsin spring training and you know, like
we do during the season. Soreally looking forward to getting back to work.
So early on the season the resultsa lot better than maybe later on
the season. Was that just somethingthat was going to dental or was there

(03:22):
some sort of uh it just fatigueat all with you later in the season.
Yeah, a mix of things,I'm sure as a mix of things.
You know, a lot of youknow, just a lot of new
things for me last year, youknow, with the travel and things like
that. But you know, noexcuse is really just got to got to
be better on the back half. But you know, I think I think
the most innings I threw prior tolast year was one hundred and then you

(03:43):
know I was pushing almost one hundredand sixty last year, So you know,
that changes a lot. You knowa lot of aspects of recovery and
things like that, things that youknow, just take a little bit of
time to adjust. But you know, going to this year feel really good
about it. You did you feellike you hit a wall at any point?
You know, people talk about danorm that point of the season for
pitchers that haven't really pitched that many. Did you feel like you hit a
wall at any point? No,I mean I think it was less of

(04:05):
like, well, you know what'shappening. It was more just like,
man, this is you know, pushing out thirty starts here like for the
first time, you know, andeven in triple A the year before,
I was a little bit of ahalf bullpen you know, starter kind of
deal. So getting that full routinewas just, you know, something that
I had to learn from last year. You'll be throwing with the diner a

(04:26):
whole lot more this year. Youdid actually throw with him quite a bit
last year. You probably don't knowVictor very well yet, but you know,
what are you looking forward to withworking with him for a full season?
Yinder? Is the more or lessevery day started catching Yeah, I
mean, you know, obviously everybodygot a chance to see how talented he
is. You know, we knewthat going in, and uh, you
know, just really excited for it. You know, I spent some time
the last couple of weeks with Victorhere at the park, you know,

(04:49):
already thrown a couple of bullpens tohim, you know, kind of see
you know, maybe how he likesyou set up or you know what he
thinks about you know, my arsenaland things like that. So you know,
really just looking forward to working withboth of them. What does the
aner think of your arsenal? Youknow, I think at times he really
likes it. At times he probablyyou know, wants to grab you by
the jersey, you'd say, figureit out. But it's all it's all

(05:10):
good stuff. Is it pretty interestingto you even you're in the middle of
it, how the mental side ofit has kind of unfold. You've got
Martine with you as you start yourcareer, and there is a big part
of it, and your pitching coachis Murph and and uh Troy, they're
just everybody's got something to give you. How do you you know, kind
of dissecting what information I got totake in at the moment and you know,
kind of learning from all of it. Yeah, I mean, uh,
you know, the Astros as awhole do such a good job of,

(05:33):
you know, showing you what whatyou can use to be successful,
and you know, you can kindof take that and run with it,
and you know, other times youkind of got to filter out what what
you you know, think might notwork for you or what does. So
you know, a lot of alot of smart brains in there, you
know, in the analytics department andon the coaching staff and obviously behind the
plate too, so you know, you get you get a lot of different

(05:55):
chances to you know, evaluate whatyou think will be best. I want
to go a little lighthearted here.Obviously being from Detroit and went to winn
State. Were you a Michigan fanMichigan State fans growing up? So?
Actually, yeah, I was.I always wanted to go to Michigan State.
I at the time I didn't cutit, you know, with my
athletic ability. But yeah, sothen my cousin, Quinn Nordine, he

(06:15):
uh, he kicked at Michigan forabout three years not too long ago.
So then I became a you know, a family drawn Michigan fan. So
you know National Championships? Yeah didthat? Did you by chance to make
it to the National Championship when theywere here at an Archer Stadium, Michigan
no, I was, actually Iwas back in Michigan, so yeah,
but yeah, I mean really reallyawesome stuff. You know, it's been

(06:36):
a long time for that program. And you know, now we got a
city, Detroit's got the Lions goingto so right, so the Lions fan
then, oh yeah, definitely allright, Lions Texans super Bowl? You'd
be well, you got any plansfor to watch that Detroit Lions game tomorrow?

(06:59):
Uh? Not, not any bigplans. Maybe get together with some
of the guys and hang out andwatch the games. But I mean there's
a pretty big one here in Houstonor not here in Houston, but for
Houston Baltimore three thirty. Yeah,it's gonna be pretty exciting to see if
they can stop Mr Jackson. Allright, what more? Back to baseball?
The sorry real quick? Uh so, Joe Spotted named the manager,
obviously getting handing passing at the batonfrom Dusty Baker's your thoughts on that hire

(07:26):
and your relationship with the spot andnow, yeah, you know, first
of all, I just I loveDusty. You know, the stuff that
they got did for me in mycareer, will you know, always stay
with me. But you know,Joe's Joe's been around, and I'm really
excited to play it for him.Uh. And you know, somebody with
as much experience that you know,Joe has had in all different types of

(07:47):
coaching roles. You know, I'mexcited to learn from him. And and
uh, you know, you know, kind of keep that seamless transition.
I think it will be. Weasked you where you were when you first
heard of the hater news. Doyou remember or was there some teammate you
first contact and say do you believethis or this is awesome? No?
I mean we I actually talked withPaina in the in the parking lot this

(08:07):
morning about it. Yeah. Ithink everybody's just really excited. You know,
you get such such a great talentto come in. You know,
it's big for us. Hunter Brownright here at fanfast everybody you ready to
go? Healthwise? Good to go? Yeah, Florida and we're off and
running. Feeling really good. Yeah, looking forward to spring training. We
appreciate your time sitting down with usin front of the fans. It feels

(08:30):
like the start of the season ishere. Yeah, no doubt, no
doubt. All right, Thanks appreciatethat. We'll talk to you at spring
