Speaker 1 (00:00):
I heard radio presents Tom broke off now here. This
a few weeks ago. I arrived in Iowa, got off
the point and ran into my colleague John Holman, who
is one of the most perceptive of all those of
us who follow American politics. I said, what's going on? John?
He immediately said, well, Bernie is going to win Iowa,

(00:20):
and then he's probably going to win downstream as well,
and by the time we get the Super Tuesday, he
will be the leading candidate. I said, John, you're talking
about New Hampshire. I can figure out how he can
win that, but Nevada as well become the leading candidate. Oh,
come on, John, a seventy eight year old socialist with

(00:42):
a bad heart. Well, it turns out my friend John
was as perceptive as ever, and so here we are. Yikes,
the chances that this man, a socialist who's rarely had
this kind of a victory in his lifetime at could
become the Democratic nominee against Donald Trump with get this

(01:06):
free education, free healthcare for everyone. It's hard for us,
all wherever we are on the political spectrum, to have
a conclusion that this is gonna work out for him.
The way that he says that it will next week
Super Tuesday, when we hear from voters in California, Texas,
the Mid South, from New England, from Minnesota, and fifty

(01:31):
seven delegates at all will be in play. Next week,
when we hear from them, we'll have a better idea.
But in the meantime, the consequences are huge. If Bernie
were to continue this rampage that he's on, collecting the
delegates by the end of next week, some others are
going to have to make a hard choice about whether

(01:52):
they stay in or get out. And those who get
out will be doing their party a favor if they
have no chance to get the nomination, because they will
consolidate the great contest. Bernie will not have one corner
of it all for himself. I'm not saying that Bernie
doesn't deserve the right to be the nominee. What I
am saying is if he is the nominee, no one

(02:16):
will be happier than Donald Trump and his followers, not
just in the White House, not just in Congress, but
across the country. So the others are going to have
to make a tough decision, quit and rally against Bernie.
The seventy eight year old socialists with a bad heart,
or possibly Senator Warren, who seems to be at war
with everyone who doesn't agree with her. Exacting terms about

(02:40):
what it takes to be a president. Budenses what happens
to him hard to know. We're at a chaotic time.
Bloomberg will stay in the race in part because he's
willing to spend the money. Even though he may withdraw
as a candidate, He'll likely continue his campaign against Donald
Trump because he feels he is so destructive to this country,

(03:03):
so represents the worst of those who think all you
have to do is raise a lot of money and
enrage people to your side. At the same time, we're
dealing with another UFO, as I call them in American politics.
In this case, a deadly virus that began in China
is now sweeping the world. It will affect the well

(03:27):
being of the world, the confidence of citizens everywhere, because
there is no button to push to eliminate it. Having
said all of this, I am still emotionally attached to
what is going on in America. In Port because of
the great memorial to Kobe Bryant, I was riveted by
those world's greatest athletes standing up tears running down their cheeks,

(03:51):
talking about how much they admired Kobe, how much the
game at to them, how much they brought to all
of us as a result of their extraordinary hills. These
are the greatest athletes in the world, and we saw
them at their most vulnerable. At the same time, I
have something I want to share with you. I want
to share with you the idea that I never thought

(04:14):
that I would see Michael Jordan's weeping as he did.
I've seen him week before, I've known him well for
a long time, but it was always the result of
a championship. But this was the crying of a man
who was deeply wounded by the loss of his friend.
He was as vulnerable as all the rest of us.
It turns out, I didn't know Kobe Bryant, but I

(04:38):
once asked him to autograph a jersey from my mother,
who was a devoted Lakers fan, and he immediately did
that and then sent me a jersey as well, which
everyone in my office now is kind of contesting for
the ability to hang onto it. At the same time,
I want to bring you up to my own condition.
I turned eighty a couple of weeks ago, and two

(04:59):
days after I turned to eight, I thought I would
go for a spin on my very high end hiteweight bicycle.
But mounting the bicycle, I managed to tip it over
and break bones in my back right where the back
and the pelvis are joined. It's been a painful, painful recovery,
but you know how it's been helped for me by

(05:22):
being in a great hospital in America, in New York
City and looking up and seeing nurses who have come
to Americas will fulfill their dream there from Vietnam and
from Trinidad and from China, and they're the best in
the world. And those are our fellow citizens. So we
have lots of reason to be grateful that we are

(05:45):
where we are. We have hard work ahead of us,
to choices, but the fact is we're still the US
of A. And on the four yeth anniversary of that great,
great success in Lake Placid by the American hockey team,
it's time for us to remember, do you believe in miracles?

(06:08):
I do, and maybe we have another one in the horizon.
I'm Tom broke Off for I Heart Radio now Here.
