Talked with DeAnna Warren, CEO and Keisha Henry, LCSW of Genesis Community Health. Genesis is a Florida 501(c)3 non-profit organization created to provide health care to all economic levels, with special sensitivity to the needs of economically disadvantaged people of diverse cultural backgrounds in and around Palm Beach County. Genesis Community Health is an access point of care for patients who traditionally do not have adequate access to the health care system. Genesis is currently funded through the US Department of Health and Human Services and other local agencies and foundations. As part of their services they offer medical, dental and mental health care. Keisha is joining the team to offer the mental and behavioral services component to their patients. We talked about mental health vs. mental illness and how there shouldn't be a stigma attached to getting mental help if you're not feeling well. We talked about some common mental health issues and then about the recent "celebrity" suicides and what to do if someone is having problems including asking for a CIT officer when calling 911.
