iHeartMedia everywhere else and uh we wewe hope that you will share that pass

(00:49):
that on to as many people asyou can. Thanks so much for joining
us today. Appreciate a couple ofhours of your time. Andy fails and
look a strain with you this afternoon. Keith Murphy is if he's not in
all the New York he is stillen route. Uh he got I think
a little bit delayed this morning, but he will be there eventually. Hopefully
he's going to join us here anhour number two and uh bring us up

(01:11):
to date. Still so far onhis trip to cover the Hawkeye Women.
Uh, Lucas, how are youdoing this afternoon? I am doing pretty
good. What's going on? Andy? I think? Uh, I think
I'm really curious. How do youguys in the sports department determine who goes
to cover in which event? Becauseobviously you went to Omaha just last weekend

(01:33):
around to mark that that's a that'sa good question. Well so it h
typically now it's changed a lot.You know, in the past, Keith
had kids at home, it washarder for him to travel. He didn't
used to travel. Uh. Nowthat his kids are gone, he travels
a lot more than he used toin the past. I think we try

(01:56):
to put I don't consider myself tobe part of the sports department. Really,
I'm in the news department, butI do travel sometimes and cover stuff
as I did last week. Usuallyyou try to put now that we're kind
of set up, we I thinkwe tried to send Keith to one of
the biggest stories, so the IowaWomen sent We sent him to the Iowa

(02:22):
Women. I think for a coupleof reasons. First, he already has
a pretty good rapport with Caitlin Clarkand her family, which helps a lot.
I covered them last year and they'rerun to the NCAA title game,
so that just kind of gives youa better inside track to you know,

(02:46):
figure out how the whole thing isgoing to work this year. John Sears
and Mark Froud are both really reallygood at doing these trips, going and
covering stuff on their own too,but in this case it just kind of
I think we just kind of stuckwith what was working, and Keith has
those connections. He does really goodlive shots. I mean, obviously he's
great at what he does, sowe and we knew that, you know,

(03:07):
fraud being as good as he isand being really polished. At this
point, he's been doing a lotlately. He goes with the Iowa State
Men. Now we only had alimited budget, couldn't send everybody everywhere.
He was very fortunate that we hadDrake in Omaha. Otherwise we wouldn't have
gone and covered them at all.We wouldn't have been able to And if
the Eowa men had gone to theNCAA tournament, I don't think we would

(03:29):
have been able to go with themto cover them. It's just different than
it used to be. Companies hadyou know, the owners spent a lot
more money right traveling to cover newsstories, and they just don't do that
anymore, which is really unfortunate. But Mark Freud is out in Boston.
He's he's all set to cover thebig game tonight. So let's just launch

(03:54):
right in with the one and oneand start with US one at one with
Murph and Andy on one oh sixpoint three k X and O powered by
Kuberski Brothers lawn Teer, we bringlawns to life. Visit Kuberski Brothers dot
com. It is Game Day,Game Day Night. The Sweet sixteen is
upon US Cyclones and UH University ofIllinois fighting a Lina tonight did nine h

(04:19):
nine pm Central Time, TBS,True TV. Let's start with a QUICKI
pole here, all right, Ourquickie pole is brought to you by w
cipools and spas. What do youthink happens? I have state wins or
they lose? Really interesting matchup.Yeah, I think it's the most interesting

(04:43):
matchup in the Sweet sixteen. Ifeel like much of America feels that way.
Yeah, got two of three. The localness taking that out of this,
this is this is the most intriguingmatchup best defense versus best offense.
Yep, you have two teams thatI think are they're associated, but not
directly. You know, they knowof each other, but they haven't played

(05:06):
each other had a common opponent leastone. I just and you know,
really, I don't know that IowaState has played a lot of teams like
Illinois, and I don't think thatIllinois has played a lot of teams like
Iowa State. Yeah, it goesboth ways. We keep hearing. Well,

(05:28):
Illinois hasn't played a defense like IowaStates yet, which is true.
But Iowa State, on the sameside, hasn't played an offense like Illinois.
Yet. It goes both ways.It doesn't just in two really different
conferences where I don't think that eitherone of those Boy, I will say
this, either one of those brandsof basketball would stand out. You know,

(05:54):
if Illinois played their brand of basketballin the Big twelve, they would
be an odd ball, same thingthat I always stayed in the Big twen.
You think, so, it's it'skind of what you want in a
matchup this far into the NCAA tournament, Yes, where you know, ultimately
I think you plan out a tournamentthinking, man, I hope we get

(06:15):
this player versus this player. Ihope we get this coach versus this coach.
I hope we get this brand ofbasketball versus this brand of basketball.
You know, those are the thingsthat you just kind of want to see.
That's why you have a tournament, you know, to put a couple
of teams, styles, people togetherthat he didn't get to see come together
in the regular season. And fanshave wondered about not just not just you

(06:39):
didn't get to see it in theregular season, you never get to see
it. We never get to seethese kinds of matchups Like that's what's that's
the best part of March is youpit teams that will never play each other.
I think the last time I WasState played Illinois was when Taylor Horton
Tucker was still in college whatever years. Those were the late twenty tens.
So this is a matchup we justdon't And that's the best part about March

(07:00):
is because you get to see that. I mean, of course ucon San
Diego State, we saw that inthe championship last year. But you know,
Houston and Duke, like these twoteams, two conflicting play styles.
Again, we don't ever get tosee that, and that's what's great about
March bordering states. I think theyprobably recruit some of the same players.

(07:21):
You know, the fan base isprobably intersect from time to time. It
just has all the elements. SoI think we're all I think the country
is looking forward to this game. It's going to be interesting to see how
Cyclone fans play this tomorrow. Tonight. They're all watching, of course,
but what about tomorrow. Let's doanother quickie poll. So if your team

(07:43):
was tipping off in a Sweet sixteengame after nine pm on a Thursday,
would you find a way to skipwork on Friday? Yeah? I got
them a long question there, butyeah, yep or nope. If they
win tonight, nobody's going to worktomorrow. I mean, you count the
Cyclone fan out, you think so, or do you want to go to
work? Well? Do you wantto go to work and just have the

(08:05):
best day of work ever? That'skind of what I'm thinking of, because
as a Patriots fan, when theywould win the Super Bowl that Monday,
I was looking forward to going toschool all Sunday night because I was ready
to rub it in everyone's face thatmy team just won a huge game.
So I think if I'm an IowaState fan, which I'm not, if

(08:26):
they were to win tonight, Iwould want to come to work the next
day and rub it and everyone's say, show off just a little bit.
My team just made it to theElite eight. Okay, but the night
before your game tipped off after nineo'clock and you were hammered. You were
still drinking after midnight, Okay,So throw that factor in there gonna make

(08:48):
it hard to get up tomorrow andgo. And you may just want to
just be able to ride it offand say, hey, you know I
already called in sick. I'm justgonna live it up tonight, not even
worry about tomorrow. I guess Ishould factor in. I never scheduled classes
on Friday in college because I knewI just didn't want to go to class.
So if this, if I wasdrinking tonight, there's zero percent chance
I would go to work tomorrow.I don't know what I would do.

(09:11):
I think I would try to finda way out of work tomorrow. I
think I would. I don't thinkthere's anyway. I just want to not
worry about it and just stay out. I Am going to try to find
a bar to go live from tonighton the WHO thirteen News at ten.
Anybody have good suggestions for where we'llfind a really good crowd tonight, throw

(09:33):
them away. Hit us up onTwitter at Murph underscore Andy on Twitter.
We would like to get some ideasgo on. This quickie pool question led
me to another one. Would yourather your team? So it's obviously not
ideal to be playing on Thursday, but then if you win, you get
to play again on Saturday. Ifyou win on Friday, you have to

(09:54):
play again on Sunday. So wouldyou rather the Thursday Saturday lineup or the
Sunday I think I'd rather have ThursdaySaturday. I think so too, you're
all it's really hmmm. Sundays aretough for me. I was talking to
my wife about that on the wayevery work. I don't like Sunday.

(10:15):
I don't I gotta work. Yeah, it's like that, it's my Monday.
I gotta get started. I Idon't go in until the afternoon.
We don't have the radio show,so it's like I have a light days.
I've only got one job, butyeah, I got to go in
and I do a bunch of newscastsand I'm there late with with SoundOff.
But I've done that. I've workedSundays so much in my time that I

(10:39):
just kind of developed a not ahatred. Still, it's a it's a
weekend day. But I yeah,I just don't. They don't. They
don't. They don't hit with methe same way they do with with other
people. I think I'd rather haveThursday Saturday. I think so too,
because it's easier to It's more funto take Friday off than it is to

(11:00):
take a Monday off. It isfunny to just kind of pause for a
moment if you're a cyclone fan andimagine what Monday would feel like. If
you just want all weekend, that'sa great feeling. Maybe you don't want
to let yourself. Yeah, youdon't sober up. You just keep drinking,
You keep going, just keep ongoing. Now here's TJ Atzelberger yesterday

(11:22):
talking about his tight polo shirts. We started at a bigger size. Now
when you have my frame and you'rebuilt more like a wrestler than a basketball
coach, it can become a challengingbecause it come challenging because I have short
arms. So if you wear thissize polo, the arms are long and
hanging down past your elbows. Ifyou wear this polo, it looks smaller.

(11:43):
So it gives me a greater senseof self discipline each day that I've
got to fit into the one thatour good friend Jeff Goodman would call a
sh medium. That I wear thatsize and op for that. It helps
me stay as disciplined and accountable asI need to be to our pro wearing
that shirt. That's a good answerstay a case, that's his stay accountable

(12:07):
shirt. Yeah, so I keepmyself in good shape. We've all tried
to do something like that where webuy something, or at least I have
where I buy something I know isjust a little bit too small. So
I'm like, I motivate myself.Yeah, I'll work out. I always
hear about women doing that. Iimagine, Yeah, men would do the
same thing, just like, Okay, this shirt is tight and makes me
look like I have boobs, soI'm going to work out to the point

(12:28):
where it doesn't look that way.I want to be able to wear this
shirt, so I'm going to workout so I can. It's never worked
for me, it's a good thing. It works out for Tjakis. Well,
you just wait, locas, becauseyour metabolism is still clicking. You
wait till you get hit about thirtyor so and it starts to hit the
brakes on you. Uh, Smedium, Where did smedium become sh medium?

(12:50):
That's what? Where did? Wheredid? Where did we go German
here? That was my exact questionwhen I was age, I was typing
out the title of that audio clipand I was like, I just typed
out medium because you know it's smallmedium. Yeah, there's there's no there's
no h of c H medium. It's not some guy named Schmidt making up
that word, is it. Idon't think so. Schmadium smadium, it's

(13:13):
smadia. It shouldn't be smedie. It's not a word. It should be
medium smadium. I think he saidschmadium A lot of medium smedia. I
think mercis schmedia. That's what it'stranslated into. Yeah, sh medium.
Well, so that's he's got thetight shirts and yeah, I mean,
if you're gonna wear a shirt likethat, you can't like you got you
gotta you gotta stay after yourself.I like that answer. Tucker Devrees has

(13:35):
uh This morning, he was thenumber one name in the transfer portal lasted
about twenty four hours, maybe alittle less. He has committed to West
Virginia. He's not in the transferportal anymore. How about Tony Perkins still
in the portal? Considered one ofthe best guards in the in the portal,
I would like to think, sofifteen points a game, second team
All Big Ten Conference. Speaking ofthe portal, over forty six percent of

(14:00):
the starters on Sweet sixteen teams, and there are there are sixteen of those.
By the way I count, theyhave over forty six percent of the
starters on the teams have transferred atleast once. Only Duke has a starting
five with no transfers. By theway, all five NC state starters had

(14:20):
transferred, all five. So thetransfer portal is quickly becoming the most interesting
piece of off season sports to follow. What phrase what frustrates you more as
a fan? The transfer portal orn al or do they just merge together

(14:41):
at this Saint Well, they're youcan't separate the two now, but I
think if you're you can, youcan talk transfer portal and just you're talking
about the the concept of players justmoving whenever they want and doing so frequently.
Where at the end of the season, they just hop into the transfer

(15:05):
portal and then they start shopping themselvesaround and then that's where the nil still
kicks in. Obviously they're going topick the school that probably going to pick
a school that ends up offering thema lot of money and a good chance.
I would say the transfer portal forthe most part, point I think
it's bothered me more than it hasn't. I think so too. I think
the transfer portal is not ruining. It's just I missed the way it used

(15:31):
to be. It's changing the sportinto something that I don't think ever wanted
it to be. I don't likeit. I don't like where it's at.
I mean, the term student athleteshas really got to go away there.
These are these athletes. These areathletes who pick up some college courses.
They're occasionally going to class. Yeah, that's and I think I would

(15:52):
probably do the same thing actually,But honestly, I mean, think about
the things, the different the differentthings there are to follow in sport.
Or it's off seasons, the HotStove League in baseball, NFL free agency
or just you know free agency period, but the NFL draft, the other

(16:15):
drafts. What else is there NFLtraining camp and now a high school recruiting
season used to be a big thing, but now I mean the transfer portal.
I mean, first of all,it's full of names that you're already
familiar with, right so you're alreadyconcerned with it, good or bad.
It's also something that I mean, surely you can immediately hurt your team,

(16:40):
but it can immediately make you.It can turn your entire attitude around about
your team. You can get thisphone call if you want, Lucas.
It can turn your entire attitude aroundabout your team. Your team lands one
good guy in the transfer portal, and suddenly you're going from having a bad
day to having a good one.If your team, if my god,

(17:03):
I mean, think about Iowa Statefans right now. They they're in the
Sweet sixteen. They've got all focuson what's coming up tonight, and yet
they're still getting more good news fromthe transfer portal. Yep, that's that's
a heck of a job by TJstill be able to recruit well making a

(17:25):
Sweet sixteen appearance. Let's bring Jimin. Jim wants to join the conversation.
Jim, a transfer portal, Uh, good or bad to you?
Well? As an Iowa State fan, I love it, you know,
because obviously I've got a coach that'sable to navigate it as Lucas being an
Iowa fan. Obviously Bran McCaffrey's notvery good at it and blames about it.
That's probably why you know to someextent, and you being a Drake

(17:48):
fan, you know you've looked you'relosing obviously your best player. Your perception
is probably not going to be asgood towards the transfer portal, well,
at least not this year. Imean, Drake has helped themselves in the
transs for portal in the past, and I think it's part of what's keeping
me from being really down about itthis year. As I do, I
do know firsthand that they can beyou know, the transfer portal take us

(18:11):
away, but take it away, but it also giveth and it's happened in
Iowa State two. I mean they'velost players as well. But yeah,
right now, when you're riding high, you feel like all of these players
that you've got are gonna stick withyou, right Jim, you don't see
them leaving in the transfer portal,But in this day and age, they
absolutely could still lose some players.Sure they can. And you're looking at

(18:33):
some of all the games you know, yeah we've lost some, but in
from an Iowa State perspective, yeah, we've won more than we've lost when
it comes to the portal. Inmy perspective, yeah, I would agree
with you there. Yeah, Ican understand it's things are Things are going
well for you, but you knowthey can turn around quickly. But enjoy
it for now, Jim. Andwhat about tomorrow? Are you going to

(18:55):
work? Oh? Yeah, albeitat work? Are you you're going to
rub it in anybody's face if theywin. No, you keep your mouth
shut when you win, and whenyou lose, you just be more quiet.
Okay, So Jim is over theage of twenty five. We know
that he's lived a little life.He knows. Jim, thanks a lot
for calling Colony time. Appreciate itvery much. Good luck tonight. To

(19:18):
celebrate the small victories though, whatlike winning a sweet sixteen game? You
got to celebrate those victories because ifyou only celebrate at the end, Yeah,
you celebrate, you just maybe notrub it in somebody. Keep a
governor on just a little bit,you definitely wear. Yeah, you don't
want to set yourself up because you'velived long enough to know what it feels
like to be delivered payback from somebodyelse. All right, So last week

(19:45):
Caden Proctor left for left Iowa forAlabama again. We assume Alabama. I'm
sorry, Yes, we're assuming thathe if to Iowa again. Yes,
we're not assuming that. How didyou feel about that when you heard that?

(20:06):
Hurt, just betrayed, bewildered. This is the second time it's happened.
You already broke my heart once. You had to give me hope again
just to break up with me again. Yeah, it it made you feel
probably kind of silly, didn't you, because it hops up? Well yeah,
I mean you're like, you know, happens once, shame on you,

(20:26):
happens twice, shame on me?Right, and we're to the me
part. We are. There wasone person though, that I thought of
almost immediately, and I don't knowthat I was alone, and this being
the first person I thought of.I think we found that out on Twitter.
First person I thought of was AlexBrainer. Who is Alex Brainer?
Well he is somebody who might bejust like you, and Alex joins us

(20:52):
next. He's got a great storyto tell. It's Murf and Andy here
on a Thursday, Good time forToday, powered by TNT Landscaping and Nursery
five point one remaining Leander winds it, BUTTL tooks it back to Heal,
droves it across on the drive inside. Who probably what? And No Winstel

(21:12):
came as all TNT Landscaping and Nurseryand Ankony your home for landscaping design,
tree shrubs and all Guy's barbecue. All right, it's a Murph and Andy
show here on a Thursday. Andyfails Lucas strain with you this afternoon.
We'll hook up with murphin our twoof the show. So I'm going back

(21:33):
to to late January, three monthsago. Huge news when five star recruit
Caden Proctor of Southeast Polk announces he'sentering the Portal and he's leaving Alabama.
So when that happened, I dida story on WHL thirteen with a Hawkeye
fan who had gone on Twitter andtold the world that if Proctor transferred to

(21:55):
Iowa, he would sell Celebrate bybuying Exile Brewing Company out of its Swarm
loogger, of which twenty percent ofthe proceeds go to the Swarm collective at
Iowa. Proctor did commit to Iowa, and Alex Brainer backed up his Twitter
talk by driving down to Exile andpromptly buying their whole stack of swarm that

(22:18):
they had sitting in the lobby. But then last week, less than three
months after committing to Iowa, Procterbacks out and announces he's leaving Iowa,
presumably to go back to Alabama. So the first person I thought of was
Alex Brainer, and Alex joins usnow in the studio. Did I sum
up that story pretty well? There? That is? That's pretty spot on?

(22:41):
Yeah? Okay, has this beenpainful to you? We uh talking
about this story again? You knowwhen you first reached out, I was
like, no, no chance,I have no desire to talk about that
again. But it's it's sat longenough that I've kind of forgiven Caden Proctor,
which is weird to say. Whatwell, I think you've handled it

(23:02):
really well. I mean you youyou grabbed the bull by the horns and
you didn't hide from it. Itwas a really fun story, uh to
start with, and that you're you'rea you're a die hard Hawkeye fan,
right, and no doubt about that, right? I mean I saw that
as an opportunity. I mean,I'm already a Swarm member, so at
that point it was a it wasa call to arms, Hey we need

(23:22):
we need we need to get CaidenProctor on. Or it was more of
a we need to raise money tobring in talent. It wasn't specifically Caden
Proctor. But that's that started floating. You like the idea of Swarm of
exile. Don't making that that thatdonation to the Swarm collective through their beer.
You like that because it's there's somethingtangible in that donation. It's easy.
I'm gonna drink beer either way,so I might as well drink beer

(23:45):
that's gonna go twenty percent towards somethingthat I enjoyed. But you really leaned
into it, like to the pointlike that was the only beer that you
were drinking. I had not hada beer besides Swarm in months until we
were at the NCAA Wrestling tournament lastweekend and they didn't have it down in
Kansas City. Yeah, you said, only when they don't have anything else,
or they don't have Swarm, doI drink something else. I had
to drink Boulevard, and I wasn'timpressed. It's no swarm. Okay,

(24:07):
so you bought in January? Whatabout forty cases? I think it was
probably thirty eight, thirty eight, thirty nine. Okay, you have an
apartment, YEP apartment in wine here. How well did all that fit into
your apartment? Not well? Iwas running out of room very quickly.
My closet turned into no longer aclothing closet. It was a beer closet.

(24:29):
The empty space above my cabinets andmy kitchen became storage for swarm,
which I saw some of those pictures. It's kind of design in a way.
People use that for storage for differentdifferent things. It added to my
aesthetic that was already covered in eyewith stuff anyway, right, It just
added to the hawkeye. So how'sthe supply going right now? It was

(24:51):
three months ago you had more thanyou could fit in your apartment. How's
it doing that? Is it allgone? It is not all gone.
It's I was hoping it would makeit till football, and I don't expect
that to happen at this point becauseyou're going to like events and and and
bringing a twelve pack. I mean, we've had eventful spring with Iowa Sports.
I mean, the women's teams amazing, wrestling has been good, men's

(25:12):
basketball has had some big games. So you've been drinking a lot. Yeah,
So the various events where I'm watchingIowa sports of drinking swarm and you're
having friends over. Oh yeah, and they're not bringing beer because they know
you've got so much it's very convenientfor them. Yeah, I mean,
you are more popular now than youused to. Prod Absolutely, it's in

(25:33):
bye Alex Well, we don't reallyknow him, yeah, but he got
a lot of beer. Beer.Okay, So, so how did the
news of Proctor leaving Iowa reach you? Last week? So? I was
just I mean, I was scrollingthrough my phone as usual, and all
of a sudden, I have aton of Twitter notifications and that's not common
for me. I'm not a hugeTwitter user until the initial Caten Proctor thing

(25:57):
and I just my notification are blownup. So I'm starting to scroll through
and I see from I think itwas Hawkeye Insider it was Caden Proctor considering
leaving Iowa, and then within anhour it turned to cat and Proctor is
leaving Iowa, and it was atthat point it was devastating. I was
like oh man, and the notificationsjust kept piling up. I was like,

(26:18):
this sucks. Okay, were peopledo they remember you on Twitter?
What you had done in January?People had gone back to the original tweets
from both who TV the article andthen the various articles put out by other
other entities, and so they werewondering about you, just like I was.
Yeah, they were less pleasant thanyou were. Oh really? Were

(26:38):
there some people wanting to rub yourface in it? Oh? Yeah?
No really? Oh yeah? Ohis the opposing fan bases that were that
were chirping me left and right? And it was like like I'm just reading
through these and I'm like, youguys haven't beat us at ever. You
guys haven't beat us and ever,We'll beat you with or without Caden Proctor.
So let's kay. So it soundslike what Cyclone fans, Minnesota fans
Silone Minnesota and the Nebra Oh yeahNebras Twitter stuff. Okay, So they're

(27:04):
they're hitting you and I imagine,I mean, you had bought all this
beer, but mostly you had gottenreally excited about a big signing for your
team. So how did you feel? I mean, were you upset?
I mean that night with the lackof information that was out there. It
was it was kind of devastating. It was like, we we had this
big fish and we lost him,and how did this happen? Lost him

(27:26):
again? Yeah, lost him twice, and it was it was a how
in the world did this possibly transpire? And it wasn't till the next day
that we got some concrete information onwhat happened and the fact that we did
not end up giving him much wellzero fan money and very little corporate money.
So it was initially the reaction wasterrible. You were angry at him.

(27:47):
Oh yeah, it was. Itwas. It was awful. But
as more information spiraled out and wegot we got to the bottom of it,
it was okay. At least youfelt the least. At least I
didn't totally waste money. And Imean I didn't totally waste money anyway.
I got five hundred beers cans ofbeer. I talked to via text yesterday.
I talked with Brad Heinrix, theCEO of the Swarm Collective, and

(28:11):
he, you know, there aresome things that he's not allowed to say.
Confidentiality agreements about corporate donations that goto the collective are really kind of
kept under lock and he don't talktoo much about that. But what he
did tell me, and I knowthat he told Travis on the Morning Rush
Lucas. I think we talked aboutthat last week. He what he did

(28:33):
say was that no fan money moneybecause there's two different Swarm collectives. There
was the regular collective that is fanmoney, and then there's Swarm Inc.
Which is all the corporate stuff. Those are kept separate. He didn't get
any money from the Swarm collective. He got zero dollars. In order to
get that money, he has todo they and the players, they have

(28:59):
to do charity work, they haveto do certain they have to do certain
things in Iowa and he hadn't doneany of that yet, so he wasn't
paid anything yet. For on thecorporate side, he was paid about fifteen
percent of what he was the overallmoneys that he was promised. I think
he may have done a commercial ortwo for a car dealer or for one

(29:23):
of the corporations that had paid him. That was that he had done a
little bit of work and then thereforehe got that money. Now, Brad
Heinrich would only say fifteen percent ofthe total total could have been a million
dollars, it could be one hundredand fifty thousand dollars. That's a lot.
I mean, he really did geta lot for doing basically nothing,
and nobody was paying him the moneyjust so he'd come back and do commercials.

(29:47):
They were paying the money so he'dplay for the Hawkets football field.
But you know he did. Here'sa couple of the quotes that he gave
me. He said, this isthe new landscape. I am protecting Hawkeye
fans money and ensuring that if aplayer gets paid, he did something good
for charity in the process. Onthe corporate side, he fulfilled that obligation

(30:10):
in his contract. So the sponsoris disappointed in his decision, but not
hostile or upset. Now the questionis what is this What does this do
to fans like you, to corporationslike those that donated to the Cave and
Proctor process in the future, doesit make you more hesitant to give to

(30:36):
the collective because you know that theycan only control so much and there is
not a legal structure that is setup to hold these In some cases,
you know, teenagers, young mento their work, to this commitment.
There's nothing set up to guarantee thatthe fans get return on investment. Does

(30:57):
this make you less likely to wantto participate in the collective in the future,
me personally, not at all.I think the general consensus, well
not the general consensus, but alot of people that night were panicking.
It sounded like a lot of peoplecanceled their memberships, and it sounds like
that was very premature based on whatwe learned after the fact. I think

(31:21):
it's just the landscape that we livein. It's the new it's the new
new college football, like fans havethe ability to bring in talent for their
team. It's the way I lookat it is. I enjoy watching Iowa
sports. I can directly affect thetalent on the field via donating to the

(31:41):
donating to Swarm or donate to othercollectives. But you know, though,
that your money may not actually dothe good that you you want. I
mean, I was still holding yourmoney. Technically, they're hanging out,
not Iowa. The Swarm is holdingyour money. It'll they've got plenty of
other things to spend it on inthe future, but they still don't.
I mean, they don't really everhave a guarantee that that's actually going to

(32:05):
do what you wanted to do.That's that's fair. I mean, I
think from a specifically Iowa, specificallySwarm point of view, I think Brad
runs Swarm similar to the way thatKirk runs the Iowa football program. You
gotta work for it. He's theytry to do that, yeah now,
And I think a lot of collectivesare trying to set up that way.
And I think if you trust himfor now, I trust Swarm, and

(32:29):
I trust Iowa collectives in general. It's messy out there. It sounds like
a lot a lot of collectives areskirted by the rules because they're really are
any right now. And I thinkthat us running it the right way,
and this specific scenario saved the fansa ton of money. A lot of
other schools would have given that moneyto him up front and then he would
have signed. Yeah he could. We could have gave him everything we earned

(32:52):
in those couple of days. AndI will make get to a position where
they have to do that to keepup with the jones. I mean,
that's not out of the realm ofpot now. It is illegal, so
it would be under the table signingbonuses. Brett Heinrich tortus. It is
illegal r which is what's going beengoing on forever for decades, for sure
happening and that speculation. I'm notan expert in the matter by any means,
but I think you could safely speakyeah, it is. Uh,

(33:20):
it's difficult because you you you stillyou trust in them, but there has
to be a part of you thoughthat now is maybe a little unsure of
whether an athlete committing even in thisprocess, even with money behind it,
actually means that athlete's going to showup on the field. May mean maybe

(33:40):
your money is safe, but youstill don't have any control over the athlete
himself. And once it's happened toyou once, does it make you just
a little bit gunshy to really countyour chickens until they actually appear in a
football game? You know? Ithink it kind of goes back to the
IOWA recruiting philosophy and general we've gotto recruit the right guys. Sounds like

(34:00):
that was not the right guy thefirst time or the second time. He
was not bought into Iolea football, and there's nothing we can do about that.
I know that there's another there's anotherside out there. Twenty four to
seven Sports has reported a little bit. There's been a couple of stories where,
even without getting behind the paywall, you could see that I think there's

(34:23):
at least accusations from Caden Proctor orthe Proctors that didn't seem like he got
all that he wanted from Iowa's interms of recognition for him actually being there
as part of the team. Idon't know how how much truth there is
to that. Some of it seemsa little hard to believe to me.

(34:43):
Some of it doesn't seem like itcould. It's that bad, you know,
I mean Iowa, I mean wouldclearly want to see him on,
you know, in practice, andthat I don't know if they had done.
I don't know how much they hadseen of him in the weight room
or anything. He was enrolled though, yep, he was in classes,
he was playing intermural basketball, enrolledin workouts, gone the day before practice.

(35:07):
I don't know how much more youneed to see of him to believe
that he's actually going to be apart of the team. Maybe they were
hearing things that maybe the rest ofus weren't, about him still having a
wandering eye. I'm sure they knowa lot more within that locker room than
we know out here, no doubt. But the other thing is when boy,

(35:28):
you know, and this is happeningwith Drake right now, when a
coach leaves, you know, inthis day and age of college sports,
there's gonna be a fire sale.People are like a fire drill. I
mean, people are going to bejust running for the exits, whether they
actually leave or not. Maybe anotherthing, they want to see who that
next coaches. They could use thatas leverage, whether it's to get the
coach that they want, or leverageto get more money from the school that

(35:52):
they're currently at. They could doall of those kinds of things. I
think you see that a lot alot of guys entered the portal and then
pull their name out, and it'slike, I think it is sort of
a leverage tactic to enhance their incomeas a college student. Well, so
the bottom line to this as wewrap this up, Alex, though,
is I think you're in in betterposition than most of the other fans in

(36:14):
that you chose to make your donationsthrough buying beer, right, So at
the very least you got beer, right. Everybody else that just donated the
old fashioned way just has their moneykind of sitting over there with the collective
still waiting to be spent. Yougot the beer at least, But I
mean, I am also a Swarmmember before that, so it's that's kind

(36:37):
of the reason that I went aboutit this way is because I was like,
I'm already a member, I alreadydonated this much year. I might
as well do something different and getcreative with it. And realistically, the
intent was not for me to gobuy a bunch of beer, because I
didn't expect that tweet to ever gohold the way that it went, But
it spiraled out of control quickly, and then it got to the point where

(36:57):
I was like, yeah, Ihave to do this or I'm gonna look
like it happy. You were aman of your word. Yeah, you
were a man of your word.Yeah, good job. Every time around
you've been a man of your word. Yeah you gotta be yeah. Yeah,
and you're a man of your beer. You still like the beer?
Beer? No, not yet.I've been outside of Iowa events. I
mean outside of Iowa events and weekendevents. I don't I don't usually do
a lot of time drinking, butif the Hawks are on, I'm probably

(37:21):
gonna have some swarm I have you'vedone anything crazy with Have you shot gunned
a swarm beer? Perhaps? Haveyou used a beer bong with any swarm
beer? You know, I haven'tused a beer bong in a very long
time. Have you filled a kiddiepool with it and taken a bath?
That'd be wul always, I don'tknow. Might do something good for your

(37:43):
skin too. You don't know untilyou find out you could. I mean
the problem that the point is thisis these are all still open possibilities.
You have enough beer to do anyof this stuff. Absolutely, Alex Brader,
thanks for joining us today. Appreciateit's interesting to hear your story.
And yeah, you're a stand upguy. Thanks for having me on.
Yeah, well, enjoy, Enjoythe Hawkeye women on Saturday. Enjoy uhig

(38:05):
win Dodd a big win. Yes, we will be back with throwdowns.
It's Murf and Andy on a Thursdaytime. All right, Andy, let's
throw it down. Murf and Andyshow one six point three cakes. You
know which one seed is on upsetwatch this weekend? The most well.
I went into the tournament believing itwas North Carolina. They've rolled so far,

(38:29):
But I don't feel like I needto stick with that. I went
into the tournament believing Houston was goingto be the overall champion. They had
the toughest game the last round. But I think I'm still sticking with with
North Carolina here against Alabama. Alabamahasn't seen any real big challenges yet.

(38:51):
But I don't know. I willwill, I could be you could be
wild. It could be San DiegoState over Yukon, right, I mean
that could happen. It's a tournament. It's what's what we love about it.
But at this point, I thinkthese are all pretty pretty good games,
pretty interesting games, which is whatyou want. That's the good part.
Well, say, North Carolinas isthe most vulnerable. I'm just gonna
go with Houston because Duke just hasthe talent to they can and you got

(39:15):
a scare from Houston if you're aHouston fan. Texas A and M right
right, So outside of Iowa Statefor local reasons, which remaining team do
you want to win the tournament?Marquette because of Mark freyd Mark Freud.
I've got a couple of other friendswho went to Marquette and would really make

(39:35):
them happy. I don't have anythingagainst Marquette. You know. I mean,
really, they're just kind of neutralCatholic school in Milwaukee. It's got
a good basketball tradition. It's agood basket It's a really good basketball school.
It's kind of like a It's kindof like Drake. It is a
basketball school. I wouldn't mind seeingthem when if I was taking. It'd
be good for Shaka Smart too, former Texas coach, coach. He's a

(39:55):
nice guy. Never seen seems likesuccess in the tournament, so it'd be
good for him. Shoa Smarts madesome money off the turnabout, just hadn't
won at all. We had thehe had one great run with VCU,
and he hasn't. I think thisis the first time he's made the Sweet
sixteen. He took that, parlayedthat into so much money. I think
he waited a year before he actuallyleft the VCU think he did, and

(40:16):
then he go went what Texas rightafter that? I think Texas was the
next gool after that. He's didn'twork out. Has he been at Marquette
ever since? I think so.I thought he's been somewhere else. No,
I do think it was Texas straightto Marquette all right, And then
lastly this was a weird one.I can't like peel an orange. What
is the best way to do it? Do you just like drive your thumb

(40:37):
and do it? Use it.You're talking about a regular orange or one
of those cuties, these little regularorange, see one of the cuties.
You just use your thumbnail. Thoseare so easy to peel there, amazing.
That's the one good thing about winterand Iowa was it's cutie season.
Uh. If you're using like alike a regular orange, the best way
is people have those plastic orange peelingtools. Oh yeah, like put out

(41:00):
like like put a like a slitall the way around. Those things work
great. I think I got oneof my my desk at work. I
got them all over the place.Yeah yeah, yeah. They're like one
of those things that once you haveone and it'll be with you for the
rest of your life. But yeah, those work really well. Otherwise,
like a little pairing knife, orangesare kind of hard to peel. You

(41:20):
can't do it big long vampire fingernailsto do it. Our number two coming
up. We got a lot togo
