Dodger Talk is sponsored by La CareHealth Plan, providing affordable healthcare insurance to
millions of Angelinos for over twenty fiveyears. And now your voice for Dodger
Talker. Like back David Vasse,we are live at Dodgers Stadium on Show
Hey Sunday Show. Hey Otani deliversthe walk off base hit to right field

(00:25):
in the tenth inning with two outs, and Jason Hayward scores the go ahead
walk off run for the Dodgers asthey defeat the Cincinnati Reds today three to
two in ten innings. We're withyou until five thirty today. Phone lines
are open at eight sixty six nine, eight seven two, five seventy.

(00:45):
Jose Moto will join us at fivepoint fifteen. We'll head downstairs to get
clubhouse reaction, not only from theDodgers, but also a local kid,
Hunter Green from Notre Dame High Schoolin Sherman Oaks, who pitch room well
today but comes away with a nodecision after six and the third innings two
earn runs. The two earn wereon one swing of the bat. Andy

(01:08):
po Has with his fifth home runof the season down the left field line
in the fourth inning to give theDodgers an early two nothing lead, so
they had that and nothing else afterPaz his two run home run against Hunter
Green, who really had the fastballmoving today more than I remember seeing it

(01:30):
move before he got hurt, sohis fastball definitely has more life on it.
He's been able to perfect a slidera little bit despite Paz hitting a
flat one for a two run homerun. So it was great to see
and it always great to see,you know, the local products come back
and play at Dodger Stadium or pitchat Dodger Stadium, and today Hunter Green

(01:53):
was front and center on this showHey Sunday. But by the end of
the day Show Hey Otani had agreat at bat and the bottom of the
tenth inning he was down one, then two, and then finally one two
on the sixth pitch of the atbat against Alexis Diaz, and he was

(02:15):
able to not try to do toomuch right. It sounds cliche, but
when you're not trying to swing forthe fences, when you don't need that,
uh, the good things work out. And that's one thing we started
to see more and more from showHey Otani, where we've seen the big,
strong swings at times sometimes maybe wildwhen his number is facing the dugout

(02:38):
and then facing center field. Butin this case, he knew what he
had to do. He just neededto put the bat on the ball for
a base hit and Jason Hayward wasgoing to score. And that's exactly what
he did, sent a base hitthrough the right side of the infield,
and Hayward did the rest and theDodgers walk off with a three to two

(03:00):
in ten innings over the Reds andfirst walkoff hit for Otani, only the
second walkoff hit of his career.First one was all the way back in
twenty nineteen with the Angels, andit was great to see great to see
him have that moment without it haveto be a home run. All of
those things certainly certainly played into avery festive atmosphere after the game, and

(03:27):
him getting the ice bath by tiaOscar Hernandez being mobbed by his teammates certainly
was a fun sight if you wereone of the fifty two thousand plus that
stuck around and did not leave early, stuck around for free baseball. Eight
sixty six nine eight seven two fiveseventy is the phone number, and I

(03:47):
go back also to the tenth inning. If the Dodgers don't keep Ellie de
la Cruz at second base, Otani'sRBI base hit is not a walkoff hit,
It's a game tying hit. AndLa de la Cruz I thought it
was nervous time at Dodger Stadium withAnthony Banda coming in to make his Dodger

(04:09):
debut, an extra innings and atied game, with one of the most
dangerous runners and all of baseball giftedat second base. That's the rule,
but I guess when you have arunner like that, it's an extra special
gift. After he made the finalout of the ninth inning, and I
thought, by at least the thirdpitch of the tenth inning, de la

(04:31):
Cruz was going to be at thirdbase. I mentioned this yesterday on the
pregame show or two days ago, that part of the way to keep de
la Cruz contained is, yes, throwing a wild pitch or excuse me,
making a pitch out number two, having the pitcher step off with Bonda did

(04:54):
in the very first at bat toMike Ford, so you had that layer
to it changed maybe the cadence ofhis delivery. But more importantly, I
was told by a couple of Dodgerveteran infielders that what you gotta do is
you got to pinch him at secondbase. And there were times where the
Dodgers against Mike Ford, Gavin Luxwas positioning Ford to the pull side,

(05:18):
which brought Mookie Betts closer to secondbase, and I definitely noticed Mooki Bean
behind him saying something pounding the glove, making dal La Cruz be aware that
he was there. And then onthe very next hitter, Jamir Candelario,
it was basically standard positioning and Luxwas the infielder that was doing the same

(05:42):
thing. And even when Banda wasable to step off, Lux was at
the bag. So those were thethings within the game that kept day La
Cruz at second base. I don'tbelieve his hitters did him any favors either.
They didn't give him a lot towork with. So that's a huge
victory where Ellie de la Cruz wasstill at second base and the Reds were

(06:05):
down to two outs in the topof the tenth inning. Let's head downstairs
right now to hear from Anthony Bunda, who was part of keeping Dala Cruz
at second base and getting three outsto set up the Tawny heroics, just
trusting what I've been doing all yearand then obviously keeping them close, making
them stop giving our chance, youknow, Barnesy a chance to you know,

(06:28):
get them if we go. Souh yeah, just trusting the process
of what I've been doing all yearand not doing much too much difference of
what I've been doing. So itwas something where it was just like going
do what I do and then youknow, you get out of it.
And then I just started complete.When you're coming to a team that's that's
hot, you know, that's winsas much as the Dodgers are winning right

(06:49):
now and beyond the history, doesthat kind of give you like a shot
of confidence for excitement or yeah, definitely, most definitely, you know,
but you know it all comes together, like the pressure, the anxiety,
all that stuff is all there, but you know, accept it, go
out and do your job. It'sit's still sixty feet six inches. I'm
not downplaying it by any means, but you know, it's obviously elite players

(07:12):
here and elite players on the otherside. So you know, just trusting
your stuff, trusting what he'd beendoing all year, and you know,
just put it to work, andyou know that's kind of how I went
about it, and I thinking toomuch, not overthinking, not trying to
overdo too much. Just be meand that was it. That was the
first message they told me, islike, hey, be yourself here.
We got you for a reason,we love you. So you know,
that was kind of it, andit kind of broke the ice for me,

(07:34):
and you know, went out thereand just did my thing, all
right. There's Anthony Bunda who winshis first game as a Dodger after being
picked up a couple of days ago. So thrown right into the fire after
he was called up yesterday or actuallytoday this morning with Landon Nack who made
the start today. Knack went fourand two thirds innings, allowed just one

(07:57):
earned run, five strikeouts, andone wall as the Dodgers defeat the Reds
in ten innings, three to two. Let's go out to the phones.
Chewie stuck around. How you doing, Chewie, you're on Dodger Talk.
I'm good, Benby, how youdoing? I'm doing great? After show?
Hey, Sunday's heroics. Oh itwas showtime. It was beautiful,

(08:18):
beautiful Sunday at the park Man.But I got a question for you.
You know, I've been seeing someinterviews with Elie Delacruz saying, you know
how much he loves Los Angeles. It was the first city he went to
in the United States, and heactually lied about being born here in LA.
What are the chances of the Dodgerslanding this guy in free agency because
it sounds like he really wants towear Dodger blue. Okay, number one,

(08:41):
He did not lie. There wasa little bit lost in translation there,
and he's clarified it ever since. He The reason why he says this
is his city is because growing upas a young kid, he would play
that video game Grand Theft Auto andwould drive the car through LA, so
he has that attachment to it.And then making his major league debut against
the Dodgers in Cincinnati, all ofthose things played into it. But I

(09:05):
do agree with you, Chewy,I feel like Ellie de la Cruz is
flirting with the Dodgers four or fiveyears before he can go anywhere. I
agree with you. I believe hewants to play for the Dodgers one day.
I hope it happens because that'd bea good look. There's no real
shortstop in the Dodgers system. Eitherthat's the caliber of Ellie de la Cruz

(09:26):
or anywhere close. Tray Sweeney, who the Dodgers acquired from the Yankees.
I've heard good things about him,But man, if four years from now
the Dodgers still don't have a shortstoplocked up, I definitely would believe that
Ellie de la Cruz would give theDodgers every chance. Absolutely, man,
thank you so much, all right, Chewie, thanks for the phone call.

(09:48):
Yeah, I agree with Chewy.I feels like Ellie de la Cruz
has a girlfriend right now and he'sflirting with a girl that he sees across
the street, and that's the Dodgersor across the country long distance flirting from
Elie de la Cruz. Cruz andthe Dodgers are Dela Cruz and the Reds.
We'll see the Dodgers next week inCincinnati. The Dodgers head out after

(10:09):
Wednesday's homestand finale and go to Cincinnatiand City Field on the next road trip.
Eight six six eight seven two fiveseventy is the phone number. After
Otani's heroics, I was able toget in between him and the dugout steps
to join us down two in thatcount show, Hey, how did you

(10:30):
stay alive? And obviously stay withinyourself just like good chops. Now,
I was able to really see theslide a well, so I think that
really helped me be able to adjustsell out crowd on show Hey, Sunday

(10:54):
at Dodgers Stadium, how did itfeel to have your first walk off hit
in that uniform? De Machiel Samnot heap to get on. I'm sure

(11:15):
I'm gonna have more opportunities to doso. I'm glad I was able to
get one under my wing, shortand sweet, just like his swing in
the bottom of the tent thinning todeliver a three to two win for the
Dodgers in the ten thinning, eightsix six nine, eight seven two five
seventy is the phone number lost inthe excitement of the way the Dodgers won
this game was some spotty defense today. You had Keike Hernandez and Austin Barnes,

(11:41):
who I can't remember the last timethey were on the field as catcher
and third basement if Ever, therewas a little miscommunication there and usually you
want the position player to be ableto make that catch. Barnes a little
over zealous in his first start ofthe we of the homestand I believe so

(12:03):
those things happen. And then inthe seventh inning, things got really dicey
when Stuart Fairchild laid down a sacrificebunt and Gavin Lux was positioned near the
second base bag. He had nochance of making it to first base to
cover, and Ryan Yarborough, withoutlooking, made the throw and nobody was
home. And I guess you couldquestion two things on that play that the

(12:28):
Dodgers can learn from moving forward.Number One, if it's an obvious sacrifice
play, why is Luck's position wherehe was? Why not position him closer
to a traditional second base position sohe's able to cover first base. Number
Two, why is Freddy Freeman crashingknowing that Lucks is so far away that

(12:48):
he would not be able to getto first base. So you have to
give up something right there and youwant to get the out. And hopefully
the Dodgers learned that moving forward, because that's a play that can come back
in October. You know, otherteams like to play small ball for a
run, especially a team like theReds who don't have a lot going on
for them offensively, They've got tofind a way to scratch across runs.

(13:11):
But in the postseason runs arount apremium, so that might be something the
Dodgers look at the tape later todayor tomorrow and figure out a solution moving
forward. Eight six six nine, eight seven two five seventy is the phone
number. Dodgers beat the Reds inten innings today, three to two.
Let's go out to Canoga Park.Ben, you're on Dodger Talk with David

(13:33):
vasse Hi. Ben. Hey,David, thanks for taking my call.
Man. Yeah, what a beautifulshow. Hey, Sunday today, I'm
going to be there at the parkfor Mookie Monday. Thanks to your guys
at am five to seventy and DodgerTalk. Because I won those tickets last
night. Yeah, congratulations, Ben, you won those a couple of nights
ago. Good trivia question. Hopefullythe Dodgers can come through with another big,

(13:58):
big hit on Monday night. Yeah, that's right. The other night
I had a question for you.I know, the National League is pretty
stacked when it comes to rookies. On the top of my head, you
know, Yamamoto could be a candidatefor Rookie of the Year, maybe even
Shota Emonaga. On the Chicago Cubs. Yeah, but I was also wanted

(14:20):
to ask you about Andy Pahes.Would he be eligible to receive the Rookie
of the Year award since he startedthe season a little late. Yes,
he is eligible for the Rookie ofthe Year. Yes, he's definitely eligible,
Ben, thanks for the phone call. Yamamoto showta Imanaga, by the
way, of the Cubs is havingan unbelievable start to his rookie season in

(14:43):
Major League Baseball. He's undefeated anddominating. The Dodgers got to look at
him when they were at Wrigley Feelat the beginning of the season. Gavin
Stone also eligible. I had predicted. I hate to be these guys that
pull out their predictions from the beginningof the season, but I believe that
Gavin Stone was going to have agood enough rookie season to garner some votes

(15:05):
for that award. So we'll seehow it plays out by the end of
the year. Eight six six nineseven two five seventy is the phone number,
by the way, Ben from CanogaPark. When a pair of tickets
for tomorrow night's game. I happento have an extra pair to give away
for tomorrow night's game, so whydon't we do this in honor of showy

(15:26):
Otani's walk off base hit caller seventeen. You win a pair of tickets for
tomorrow's game here at Dodgers Stadium.Colin Yee will take care of the rest.
Hunter Green, from Notre Dame HighSchool in Sherman, Oaks made the
start today for the Reds and pitchreally well. The only mistake he made
was in the fourth inning to AndyPohz. Po Haz made him pay a

(15:48):
two run home run over the shortwall in left field. Let's head downstairs
to the Reds clubhouse to hear froma local kid. Hunter Green, you
know, just want to pitch. You know, I got the best of
it, but you know, otherthan that, it felt like I was
pretty focused. Luke called a fantasticgame, and we've been working really well
together Tyler and I as well,So yeah, it was good. We

(16:10):
were able to dial up a littleextra there, particularly in the bad against
Freeman to get out of the situation. Yeah, I mean just knowing that,
you know, those those guys werecoming up, and obviously it was
an ideal for I think it wasa key k that got that got on,
you know, having a guy inscoring position with those guys up is
an easy trying to hold him atbay. But yeah, just trying to

(16:32):
mentally dig deep and uh, youknow, kind of step up in a
way, step up my intensity, step up my focus. In that situation
you mentioned, the one hitch wasthat to get ahead, try to get
ahead slider. Yeah, and justleft it over the middle of the plate.
That's a pitch that you know hehe hits and was sitting on.

(16:52):
So just bad execution on that pitch. The pitch you've got an axe role
for the last month. Is ithard that you haven't gone or he's just
guess I haven't got more wins forthe for the success that you've had personally
Again, Yeah, I mean I'mgonna be honest with you guys, Like
you guys have asked that question likeevery time, as it's kind of frustrated
having to answer it every time.Obviously it's it's not fun and we're going

(17:15):
through it, but we're just tryingto go out there and compete and to
do our best. You guys alsochecked the honey orderly checked for the series
and then they still have other waysthey can beat you as a team and
then of course he does. Hedoes. At the end, he said,
you guys feel pretty good about howyou handle him and throughout this series.
Yeah, I mean, like anyyou know, big lead hitter.
You know, you got to stayfocused and stay present in the moment and

(17:37):
attack the zone like anyone. Butyou know, obviously he's a great talent,
has a really good feel for thezone and can pretty much get his
bat to everything. So just tryingto keep him off balanced as most as
possible. All Right, there's HunterGreen, obviously disappointed with the outcome of
today's game in his backyard here atDodgers Stadium. After pitching six and a
third innings, the Reds take theloss and extra innings and he gets a

(18:00):
no decision six and the third inningseight strikeouts. You heard him mention the
pitch to Andy Pa has a tworun home run in the fourth inning.
Thanks to Bali Cincinnati, by theway, for bringing us Hunter Green in
the clubhouse over there on the visitingside. Eight sixty six nine eight seven
two five seventy is the phone number. When we continue live from Dodgers Stadium,

(18:22):
Jose Mota will join us and we'llget our winner for the tickets to
tomorrow night's game caller seventeen. Thetickets are yours. After the Dodgers,

more. Daniels Jewelers Own the Dream. We'll get back to the phone calls
in a moment, but first,it's tough to go around the horn with
Hosean Mota. All right, joseMota, an exciting show. Hey,

(20:17):
Sunday at Dodgers Stadium. How specialof an at bat was it? In
the bottom of the tenth inning. It was very crucial to see Shoyo Tani
take the approach and just covering homeplate in and out and knowing that deals
is very tough on both sides ofthe plate. And my first indication that
this could have been well for himis where the folat balls were going to
Dave. I think you know ourconversations here. When shoy gets a little

(20:41):
bit too big, it's not good. And when I saw the first foul
ball, the part of the bat, the part of his only was covered,
just knew that he has a prettygood idea that he either cut down
the swing and I looked for thelong ball and that the Diaz is going
to keep varying in and out.Shending speeds on a Hospholling nuts slider and
his through the zone state for along time and there's a result. Yeah,

(21:03):
it was really great at Bad andI thought, you know, it's
indicative of the team approach, right, because Mookie Betts was ahead of him,
and Mooki could have tried to bethe guy that you know, really
wanted to be the hero. Obviouslyit didn't work out, but it didn't
feel like Muki was trying to dotoo much And is that bad ahead of
him? It's true because when youthink about deep lineups and thick lineups,

(21:27):
as Jim Leland likes to say thata thick lineup, right, it is
not the fact that somebody is goingto always come up with a big kid.
It's only somebody coming up with abig bat turned out to be an
out. But because of what youdo and the pitches he got out of
somebody ahead of you, you wereable to capitalize on one single mistake.

(21:47):
And for Mooki, obviously he takeshis watch. Mooki's right there on top
of baseball and comes out to watch. He understands how their pitching flim does
not spread his own. And whenyou're on deck, pay attention because there's
no doubt that, you know,a bass like that can build off one
team, uh into the next day, into the next that bat. And
for Shore to pay attention to thatI think was crucial too, considering that

(22:11):
even the bookies are writy. Youknow, sliders are going to be the
same, singers are going to bethe same. Just your timing and release
point of things you're gonna be lookingat. And Shoey did a fine job
with that thanks to Mookie. Iremember a couple of weeks ago we were
talking about Otani and him not doingreally great with runners in scoring position.
It seems like he's changed his approach, and I remember you saying that he

(22:33):
should go to his eachi ro swing. More was that the echi ro approach.
It wasn't the truth swing. Everytime I said that the show,
he was like, no, no, no, I wont that class.
Yeah I'm that class, but itis. I mean, there's no doubt
that you see his feet moving, but watch sho Tani hit and where his
hands are. Watch how far hisarms go back. Obviously got very lengthy

(22:55):
arms and he can cover his own. But his balance with his head and
bring home plate in and out isremarkable. I mean, that's why he
you know, he he's shoe Otani. What can I say? But I
do like dates for a part, because that's also the swing day that allows
him to hit balls from the insidepart of the play with power the other
way. So either way you seeit, there's a lot of benefits of

(23:15):
that swing. But I do likealso when he let's lose earning counts and
just tones of downlittering counts, allright, Jose Moda. Andy Pie has
also generated the runs to get theDodgers to the tenth inning. The only
two runs before the tenth was Piehas his two run home run off a

(23:36):
Hunter Green. You were showing mesome video about where Piz stands in the
batter's box. What did you seein that at bad against Hunter Green?
And what are the adjustments he canmake to have more consistency. Assistency is
going to be the key for himto be a big league player, be
a productive big league player. Asnow he is in everyday player. You
understand that teams are going to paymore attention to his loop. He's gonna

(24:00):
crush mistakes. But I think youknow what I was showing you is how
far you can see that he isfrom the hitting zone. Not the Baptist
box, but the hitting zone andthe top some that he has. It
almost takes a lot of movement forhim to get to one pitch and cover
the outside part of the plate. As I said, you make a living
hitting mistakes. But there's no doubtthat with his power, he doesn't need

(24:21):
it try to hit home runs. But I think better coverage will be better
for him and allow him to becomea better two strike hitter because the power
is there. And I mean, this guy can to think contact and going
gap to gap, but is helearns all they're pitching to him? Justice
will needs to be made to mein my opinion the battles box. I
want to point out something in thetenth inning as well, Jose, I

(24:41):
remember the first home stand of theseason, Chris Taylor swung away when the
Dodgers needed just one run to tiethe score or to win the game in
the eleventh inning. A few weeksback key k Hernandez had the right intentions
in the tenth inning to get Haywardto third base leading off, He just
didn't execute the bun. So appliedto k for having that idea and doing

(25:03):
it on his own. Yeah,I mean, you know, Dave,
the games play so much differently now, and you know, lack of practice
it's gonna lead to uh more failures. I mean, and I'm not talking
about practice like practice before the game, but practice in the game and applying
it. It's just lead to thesame thing where guys just don't know where
the barrel is anymore. Obviously, you don't play in the National League style

(25:26):
much longer anymore. And also itapplied to the defensive side today and Gavin
Lux the player that you're talking about, same thing. It applies to all
you defense, how you're playing onthe offensive side. But I mean,
to be a good ball club, you have to have these that basket where
you have to sacrifice. You haveto do it because there's no doubt that
it changes everything. Your lineup movesa little bit loosely, a little more

(25:48):
fluid. But I think it's gonnabe applied more against any team with the
rest today I mean, you're gonnaapply it against a better team too,
and needs to be put in playmore. And I just wait until October
to say we're gonna play this topagain, because you know what, typical
guys don't respond the same way whenit comes out to that. All right,
Jose, thanks for the insight. It was a great show. Hey,

(26:10):
